Matcha Latte - A wooden table features a stack of magazines, one with Japanese text and an image of a suitcase covered in travel stickers, and a green iced drink in a clear plastic cup with a lid and straw. The background shows a concrete floor and a large white planter. A person's foot in a sock is visible at the bottom of the image.

Food/drinks: matcha latte is good! Wish it was a little stronger matcha flavor Atmosphere: this is why you come here!! Lots of tables and things to look at. I want to buy everything!! It's also part gallery? :O Service: good service! Very busy and line gets long with 2 people running the place Price: $$ pricey but expected in this area

Cute quiet cafe and gift shop with some books as well. Food was disappointing, quite underwhelming if you're familiar with Japanese food. Salmon was a bit overcooked, greens were undercooked, and onigiri sadly had perhaps 1 tablespoon of filling. Unfortunately the menu being overpriced (although perhaps not for the tourist-y vibe of the neighborhood) and the somewhat aloof/bothered staff bring it down slightly, although some staff are quite friendly! Worth coming in to take a look around if nearby and perhaps their drinks are better.

Matcha with a piece of the plastic chasen i found from the drink

We were hoping our experience here would be great because they advertised using high quality Ippodo Matcha. While the space is cool and quiet and has comfortable couches, the matcha latte itself was extremely disappointing. In terms of taste, they underused the matcha and added too much milk so it mostly tasted like a hot glass of milk. Additionally I ended up with a piece of the plastic chasen (matcha mixer) in my mouth which was not pleasant. When I pointed this out to the person managing the cafe, they just shrugged and didn't apologize or offer a replacement. I think it's safe to say we will not be coming back here!

Onigiri - A triangular onigiri rice ball in plastic packaging is positioned on a wooden surface. The packaging features Japanese characters and English text reading 'ONIGIRI RICE BALL,' with a background image of seaweed. Sunlight creates shadows and highlights on the surface, and a blurred background includes a plant and a window frame.

What a lovely find while exploring Dumbo district in Brooklyn. Usagi is a wonderful combination between an art gallery and a cafe that is perfect for just relaxing and enjoying the world around you or getting some work done - there were a decent amount of people when we visited, but it was still a calm, quiet vibe. Plenty of seating options if you prefer. Both their matcha latte and Mizudashi were great choices and well-made. They also have a good food menu, and we grabbed a couple of the onigiri. While both the salmon and the spicy tuna were delicious, they didn't seem to be consistently made. For the spicy tuna, it was a good ratio of rice:tuna, but with the salmon, there was barely any meat, and most of the bites were just rice which was a bit disappointing. All the staff here are super friendly. A short walk from the Brooklyn Bridge and Brooklyn Bridge Park, it's a great stop to just step away from the busy of NY and enjoy a coffee and enjoy the local art.

Matcha Latte - A matcha latte with a green surface and white latte art in a white paper cup is positioned on a wooden table. The latte art features a leaf or floral pattern. The background shows part of a cafe interior with a person wearing jeans and a pair of glasses on the table.

This place gets an A+ for vibes. The space is super nice, and there is a good amount of seating available. I liked that this place was both an art gallery and a cafe. The ambience is pretty quiet, with people quietly working on their laptops or reading a book. As for the food and drinks, I thought they were okay. The matcha latte and the onigiris were a little underwhelming. The flavor for the matcha latte felt a little bland, and the onigiris were mostly rice with little filling.

The gallery right when you walk in - The image shows an art gallery interior with white partition walls displaying multiple artworks, including abstract paintings and sculptures. The space has a high ceiling with visible ductwork and track lighting, creating a modern, minimalist atmosphere suitable for showcasing multidisciplinary art. The floor appears to be wooden, and the lighting highlights the artworks effectively.

Cute and quiet place to get work done or pick up a new book. Japanese cold brew was good!

This gallery/cafe is super chill and comfy. The atmosphere overall is very quiet and chill. I got the hojicha latte and thought it was okay. It was underwhelming and tasted more like milk than actual hojicha. I had better hojicha at other cafes in nyc. As for the poke, it was pretty good. It was quite filling but the portion was quite small for the price.

Minimalist bookstore and cafe - unexpected oasis for working and reading because there's so much construction and noise in this area of Dumbo. They have an art gallery in the front of the cafe with rotating exhibits. Delicious, warm Japanese meals for dine-in or takeaway. Not cheap as inflation rises, but generous portions- and worth it if you're going to spend some hours working or reading. I ordered the gyudon, which is tender and perfect with the rice. Loved being surrounded by culture and design books. I'll be back to try other items on the menu.

Matcha latte - A paper cup containing a matcha latte with a plastic lid is positioned on a white napkin on a wooden table. The cup features the Usagi NY logo, which includes a simple line drawing of a rabbit and text indicating it is a 100% compostable cup. The background shows part of a laptop and a blurred indoor setting.

They have an extremely poor system in giving out their food orders. I placed an order on the QR code that doesn't require an app and it says to wait until they call your name. My food was probably ready for a good 40 minutes but no one said anything. Went up to the register and the lady told me it was ready on the app so...where was it? It was hiding on the side behind the counter. I never received a ready notification anywhere. Anyways, that system is pretty shitty as they'll sometimes call names out and then won't. As such, food was mediocre. Gyudon was about $18 after tax. It had a lot of rice and onion and was just overall really mushy. Might have been the fact that it was just sitting there but I grade things as I receive them. The matcha latte was ok but cost me about $8 for the smallest serving which is fine depending on the quality of matcha used. I heard their coffee is supposedly good but never got the chance to try it. Good work space with wifi and environment but gets extremely busy during lunch. Not sure if I would come by here again in the future since it seems to be a hot mess.

Bulgogi - A takeout food container holds a meal consisting of white rice topped with cooked beef, chopped green onions, sesame seeds, and sliced red chili peppers. The container appears to be placed inside a vehicle, with part of a car seat and a plastic lid visible in the background.

A great spot to do work or spend an afternoon in! The location around the area has some cute spots but is mostly under constructions as of now, but doesn't impact the ambiance of this place. There are many outlets located around the area along with couches and desks to work. It's fairly quiet in the weekday mornings so you can definitely come by and take calls, but it does pick up in the afternoon and gets quite busy. The coffee is decent- matcha is not the best in my opinion. Would definitely get the food here though as it tastes super homemade and authentic. The noodles and the bulgogi both make for a great afternoon lunch. Would definitely come back to do work or just catch up with someone!

I've been trying for a while but finally made it to @usaginy on a Friday afternoon. Was planning on working there but the wifi couldn't connect to my Macbook or iPhone so that failed I really liked the idea of art + books + cafe. Reminds me a lot of the stationery and book stores back in Tokyo (thinking Iidabashi area specifically)! The drink is definitely pricey but since you can sit for a while I think it makes sense. I didn't love my drink that much, felt like the matcha got watered down by the ice, and kuromitsu jelly were diced up too tiny for me to really enjoy it. Would be down to try maybe just the regular matcha or matcha latte next time though!

Founded by author Emma Straub, both Books Are Magic locations have some really wonderful touches: lots of recommendations by booksellers on the shelves, a large section of translated fiction, and merch for bibliophiles.
