I am updating this review as I noticed some local Yelpers complaining about this business' "abrasive" customer service experience. This is a locally owned business with hard working values! I really didn't want the "Karen" and " Ken" reviews who have no credible Yelp review history to ruin the reputation of a great establishment!. But don't take my word for it, come here and see for yourself! Here is my original review and I still stand by it! If you're looking for a "good old neighborhood" store that's been around for years with a little "good old neighborhood" attitude and fully equipped with Brooklyn accent, then come to JMD Square Stores. "You'll feel right at home"! This place brags of old history and memories. I remember coming to this place when I was like 6 years old. Even back then, in the 1980's they sold Puma sneakers, Converse, Wrangler jeans, Le Tigre polo shirts and Hanes t-shirts that would satisfy all your neighborhood clothing needs. Every time I come back home to see my Ma, I make it a point to stop by Brooklyn and see what I can get at Square Stores. They fortunately renovated the store back in the 1990s creating bigger glass window displays showing off their latest sales and styles. They still sell the good old Dickies brand still available in the Mailman Blue, UPS Brown and NY Sanitation Green. I like the fact that Square Stores sticks to their roots but also follows the times and carry brands like Levi's jeans, Timberland boots and always the sporty urban Carhartt clothing line. Sadly, I live in Los Angeles now but it's always a trip to memory lane when I'm back here! Howie is the owner whom I remember way back when his dad ran the store. He's always a familiar face and is obviously from the neighborhood. He's got the good natured attitude and accent to boot!. He's got the good natured attitude and accent to boot!. I can see why some clients may feel he's rough around the edges but trust me, he's a real "teddy bear" inside. So make it a point to support your local business and capture some Brooklyn culture. I would give a zero star rating if I could. Both owner and salesmen would not give me a refund for a sling bag because both men said a label was attached to bag when I bought it. I had the receipt. How would I know the bag had a label if there was not one on the bag. Both men insisted the label was not on when I bought. I never cut off a label. they insisted someone did. Not possible unless someone broke into my apt and cut the label when I was not there lol. Needless to say I never got my money back. I will never shop there again. I did retail for years and never would I treat a customer the way I was treated. read more

I try and support local businesses but this place is just horrible. I came here to buy some shirts and a jacket but they don't allow you to browse the merchandise. They have a table blocking off the section and I guess you're suppose to explain what you want to some guy and they will bring things they think you will like to the table. Not doing that and won't be coming back. Ridiculous buisness model, I have no idea how they stay afloat. read more

By far the most unprofessional place I've ever visited. The owner was threatening a customer while I was there. Owner used his body to get close to the customer and try to intimidate him and dared him to touch him. .It seemed out of left field and not customer centric at all. He even threw his item in the street while I was paying. I regret giving them business. read more

Seems I'm not the only one who was treated horribly here. The older man (owner?) was so surly and rude--bordering on mean. His attitude pushed me to me limits, and I told him so ("You're customer service could use some improvement") and proceeded to leave. He LITERALLY chased me down the street in a menacing manner screaming "Hey, lady!!! Hey, lady!!!! Hey, lady!!!" He only stopped following me and yelling at me when I picked up my phone and started dialing 911. He scared me so much that despite the fact that I was parked on a side street, I ran down the avenue to be near people as I tried to escape this maniac. What a major a-hole. How is this place still in business? The modicum of service I did receive was confrontational, distrustful, and resentful. I'll never set foot in there again. read more

I have to disagree with the other two reviews a little. True, the staff does hover a little and they don't seem very accommodating on returns. (Although who returns a pair of athletic socks?) But the prices on Carhaart, Woolrich and Columbia clothing is spot on. It's the exact same price you will pay anywhere in New York for those brands. I would much rather buy the clothes they carry than go to Dave's in Manhattan or Pops up in Greenpoint. I think the average shopper would be glad to know they had a store with reasonable prices on those brands nearby. It has a pretty good selection too. read more

Realised that I was woefully under prepared for the blizzard that's to hit us in NY tomorrow so I decided to finally bite the bullet and invest in some Sorel snow boots. I checked the Sorel site and saw there were a few stores near me that sold them. The other stores I called were out of my size, thankfully JMD had two pairs and held them for me. The staff were so nice and informative. I didn't get the name of the sales Assistant who helped me but he was incredibly informative about winter coats as well, and just very helpful. Next time I need to winterise more of my wardrobe I'll definitely go there. They have a huge selection of the latest clothing and footwear. Support your local business! read more

Never have i been treated like i was in this store they followed me around like i was a thief There were a few other people in the store and they leaving them alone maybe because I'm black but as a perfesional man I didn't deserve the i was treated anyway you think i would have left i still brought a jacket and some other items spend 300 dollars even when i payed They were very mean like they didn't care if came back. Well gues what i had to return The jacket that's when the fun started. They were nasty. Rude the didn't want to give me my money back even though I had all recites then he acussed me of washing it i told him he's crazy it was the next day. I have never in my life been treated so rudely. I requested that they find out if a coat I was interested was available in my size and left my telephone number. The never called and when I did call them they told me they were soooooooooooooooo busy that wouldn't be able to find out and get back to me for days. WTF???????? Instead of supporting a local business I bought the coat online. Too bad, I have shopped there several times in the past and I have no idea what happened. I go in here whenever i'm in the area. They have a lot of winter gear and shoes, but the prices are a bit steep. I know it's not a chain store, but the prices should be affordable. The staff does hover over you so it is kinda turn off to shop. read more

been here at least 2x, where i bought some personal stuff like underwear, socks, a headgear for winter use---well, i think they're well stocked; i think they're reasonably priced. merchandising, though, is not as great, as it looks like an open warehouse. i have to add that i found the staff friendly. read more

Terrible customer service. Rude and condescending. Tried do do a simple exchange but was missing a tag. Not upset about not being able to exchange my purchase, but I have no idea why someone in retail would treat customers like this. Incredibly rude. Racist. Poor customer service. The owner himself attacked me at the door before I even looked around. "You need to leave your drink at the counter." Not, "can you please" or "we ask that...". A total animal. I called him on the phone after to talk it out but he attacked me again and called me rude for having a beverage. Very petty. Very ignorant. Decent brands but way overpriced...I saw a normal pair of socks for $14 there. Rude, childish manager. I simply bought a quantity bag of athletic socks & tried to return them (*note to set Jack H. straight: the first reference to a *pair* of socks is an example of the store's overpricing; I didn't buy them). The receipt clearly said merchandise could be returned for exchange or refund. I happened to go when the manager (probably an owner), a middle aged white guy with a beard, was there. I nicely, almost apologetically explained that I'd bought some socks a few days earlier but they didn't feel right, they didn't breathe so I was returning them. He cut me off, with a bewildered nasty smirk and said "I have no idea what you're talking about...what are you returning?" I had the plastic bag with the socks in one hand, and the receipt in the other. I said I'm returning these socks and he again rudely cut me off saying he had no idea what I was talking about, where were the socks? It was like a bad dream where people act in annoying absurd ways. I lifted the socks out of the bag and explained for the 3rd time...it went on like that, he basically made the experience as unpleasant as possible. He did finally cancel the charge on the bag of socks I hadn't opened and didn't say a word after that, no polite words to end the transaction or make up for the fact he was a complete d*ck to me for no reason. If I ever was desperate to get athletic socks again in the immediate vicinity I'd try one of the stores just a bit further along 5th Avenue across 9th street instead. Horrible. read more

Good store, called a head to put an item on hold and they had it for me under the counter, as promised, when I showed up that night. Nice service from the staff, and good selection of the Canada Goose jackets I was looking at. Was really happy with the experience and it's right off the subway. read more
