Not only is the food amazing, the surroundings are so beautiful right now. If I hadn't been taking food home, I would've stayed and eaten outside the restaurant in a heartbeat. 4th street is completely lit up right now with holiday lights. My order was ready when I walked in and it tasted delicious 20 minutes later when I got home to eat it. This place makes the most juicy, stuffed, flavorful tacos! The pollo are my favorite- moist on the inside with tangy cucumber salsa, enveloped by a crispy corn tortilla shell. The food was good. We had ensalada primavera, tamale, and papas con crema.The service was rude when we got it but was generally nonexistent. You order at the counter, and the payment system asks if you want to tip 15, 18, 20 percent or other. You find your own seat, get your own water, set your table, and bus your dishes when you're done. Why are you asking for a tip when you're rude and provide no service??? And good luck getting someone's attention to ask a question. We even had to get our own to go container. Absolutely abysmal! The tacos al pastor were dry and salty. A lot of pork, but zero flavor other than salt. Sadly the fish tacos were not any better. Completely bland fish, with about a pound of flavorless unseasoned cabbage on top. The tortilla chips were fried beyond recognition and they didn't have any seasoning. Not the greatest portions/bang for your buck, but still good food! After wandering around 4th street and admiring the holiday lights, I wanted to get some food and this place looked pretty popular! Their aesthetic is cute pink and cacti (not to mention a cool neon sign of their logo which got my attention,) and I could see that this would be a cool place to dine in prior to COVID times! There's a seating area outside with 5-6 small tables (seats two people each). In terms of order flow, there's a line divider that splits the entrance into two sides- right side for taking orders, and left side for pick up. I noticed that they had food lamps to keep to-go orders warm, which is a nice feature not many food places I've ordered at have! We ordered the chile relleno ($13, comes with three corn tortillas) and the torta al pastor ($11)- both were good, but I wouldn't say the amount of food you get is worth the price. The amount of meat/filling in the torta made it pretty thin compared to other places I've been to. I will say that I like how they added sweet potato inside the chile relleno- it went well with the cheese and sauce! The bread for the torta had a nice slight crisp to it, so it had good texture to go along with the inside softer contents. Overall, two entrees here won't make you full, but if you want a quick fix to tide you over, it'll do! read more

I've probably been to Tacubaya 100 times over the years. Honestly, it's about as consistently good as you can get. I've tried most things on the menu, the tacos many times. The salad is great. The soup is delicious. The sope is divine. The sides hit the right spot. All the meats are fresh, well-seasoned and perfectly cooked. The staff moves fast, is attentive, and is always friendly. Tacubaya is located along 4th Street in the pocket of restaurants and shops across from Bette's. We ordered as walk-ins and waited over 25 minutes before finally walking back up to the front to discover our order sitting on a table. We were waiting right in front and heard staff calling out names and bringing food outside to customers, but ours didn't make it. After that small hiccup, we brought our to-go meal over to the communal tables next to the parking lot that are available for all patrons ordering from the nearby restaurants. THE ORDER: 1) Chili Relleno - tender poblano pepper stuffed with gooey cheese with a crispy fried exterior, served with tomatillo salsa and fresh cilantro. 2) Pescado Tacos - the fried fish was on the soggy side and the most disappointing with execution. 3) Al Pastor Tacos - the meat could have been more tender and seasoned, but I enjoyed it and really liked the avocado salsa on top. 4) Fried Plantains - perfectly cooked, sweet and tender, and paired well with the sour cream side. I thought the restaurant had a good well-rounded menu and was pleasantly surprised by the homemade rustic corn tortillas. While I wasn't blown away by the flavors, I still enjoyed my meal and would come back if I were in the neighborhood. read more

Everything about this place is not good: - The food - The price - The "concept" of the restaurant - And the service Straight up, places where you don't get a server and need to walk up, like a Starbucks or McDonald's, and place your order at a register are terrible because you're not actually being served. Combine that with an impatient and unhelpful "order taker" and you're off to a terrible start. The food itself was unremarkable and overpriced; 100+ dollars for 4 tacos, quesadilla, salad, side of beans and an elote + beer and marg. BUT my main issue is with places where you need to walk up to get EVERYTHING. Its a horrible dining experience and YOU END UP WAITING ON THE WAITERS. If I'm setting up my own silverware, getting my own waters and am passively aggressively expected to clear my own table .... WHERE IS THE SERVICE? Heaven forbid you forget to put something in or need an extra set of silverware - GET BACK IN LINE. When our food was brought over, no one checked on us or offered us extra plates, so GET BACK IN LINE. I really wanted another beer to go with the entrees, so let put my half eaten taco down and GET BACK IN LINE. My favorite is when my food is sitting there and I want another beer, so the bartender or whoever ignores me until they completely and langorously finish what they're doing THEN takes 5 minutes looking at the POS monitor like they're solving an equation to put my order in and I have to get my OWN beer and run it to my OWN table. And then have the nerve to ask for a tip?? There is literally ZERO service in this awful type of dining concept/plan. Cherry on top is the lady forgot our elote, got an attitude when I asked about it and then brought it over after we had already finished the main meal. Places like this hate the customer and think we're stupid and lucky to be dining there. TERRIBLE With everything still so expensive, places like this feel like they're taking out the frustration and fatigue of inflation on the consumer; they're basically shunting so much of the work on YOU: setting up your own table, getting your own waters, drinks and making you chase down staff that already has its back turned when they're dropping off the food. I saw people clearing their own tables, but I refused after the frustrating service and caught one of the bussers(?) shooting daggers our way. They treat the act of dining like it's a worker's co-op that you participate in and then have the nerve swing that tablet around with the tip starting at 18%. INFURIATING. NEVER going back to this awful spot; 6 bucks for a gamey, greasy, stale al pastor taco. And with so many other better taco options in the East Bay, this place just feels insulting to give money to. Masks too. Fine. Dined out with family all week, no issues with photo of card. At restaurant I waited in outside line. Mask on and prepared to show my card on my phone. Cashier takes my phone. zooms in on photo. There is a long line behind me, she needs manager's approval of my card. She said "i don't see the numbers on it Let's put into perspective, i am prettying much ordering a bowl of soup. No big deal, happy she is doing her job. She doesn't ask to walk away with my IPhone. Just does. Disappeared with my phone to find manager. (Only cashier so line is now getting a little impatient. Manager came back and said " when we zoom in it looks blurry" Me "okay ?" Manager. "Looks like a fake document" Me ", okay it is my real card and i can see everything very clear. Came here with Z. after the two of us accidentally skipped lunch, so we were famished! Z. got the pork sandwich ($11) and enjoyed it. I got the chicken enchiladas ($13) which were delicious. We just made the happy hour special (M-F, 3-6 pm I believe) so each also got the margarita especial ($9 after taking $2 off) which is tasty. It was not too sweet and had a hint of lime -- we were happy with it. Some minor negative details: The chicken enchilada was served on the colder side and was also a rather small portion size. The cream was a little stinky (as per my breath afterward). But honestly I loved the enchilada sauce, the ambiance, the friendly service. 5/5 for Tacubaya on these details. Gem in 4th Street area of Berkeley! Felt like I was in Puerto Vallarta again, mmm happy place. We both ordered the tortilla soup which was the perfect winter lunch and a side of chips and guacamole. Hearty, generous serving sizes, including lots of shredded chicken in the soup in a deep red, nicely seasoned broth with chunks of avocado. Couldn't resist the agua de pina (pineapple) drink, very good, but look forward to getting my fave PV drink here next time, the agua de Jamaica (hibiscus flower drink) that they say they usually have. I wouldn't say the items are cheap, but they are very reasonable for the location. The cashier was so nice and even noticed we were sitting outside and turned on the heaters for us. Amazing food, I have been coming here for about 3 years and reading some reviews from here it's so funny to me. Yes you pay for chips and salsa it's on the menu for a reason. I'm sure all bars and any drinks come with specific measurements so if you ask for no ice then you're still getting what the serving is. If you don't like the portion just don't buy it I guess (even if it's Horchata). Margaritas are amazing and they have a full selection of tequila and mezcal. I think they're more focused on that now. I was casually strolling through 4th street Berkeley one sunny day until I walked into the little corner where Tacubaya is. The store's pink decor caught my attention right away, and I decided to get dinner here shortly after-- definitely a pretty instagram-able spot. Upon entering you order at the register, grab your number tag and sit at a table of your liking. All I ordered were tacos, which were actually pretty pricey $$$, but super delicious nonetheless. I feel like 2-3 tacos will be able to fill you up. My favorite was the Taco de Lengua, and while it was interesting how the Taco de Pollo was served in a crispy taco shell I think the chicken meat was a bit dry. Regardless, I definitely want to come back and try Tacubaya's happy hour drinks next time! read more

The Soggiest Tacos you'll ever have. The meat is good but the tacos are incredibly soggy. Especially the carne asada tacos. Be sure to eat these on-site because they will be absolutely drenched if you take them home with you.
