I have never had a bad meal here, a real Fourth Street staple. Great vegetarian and gluten-free options. Make sure you try the appetizer, "Papas con Crema" ($5.25) potato & cheese fried cakes with a green poblano cream sauce and green onion. Great food but still left a bad taste in my mouth. Customer service is lacking at this place. I am from San Diego. Came here, looking for the old restaurant I loved. It super good, i noticed it went from french to Mexican. Love Mexican food. This place is fairly crowed. If i it wasn't for the customer service issue it would have been a 5 star. Chili relano is great San Diego doesn't have the same sticky rules as Berkeley. I respect that and complied everywhere i went. Berkeley you must carry your vaccination ID card, to go in many places. Masks too. Fine. Dined out with family all week, no issues with photo of card. At restaurant I waited in outside line. Mask on and prepared to show my card on my phone. Cashier takes my phone. zooms in on photo. There is a long line behind me, she needs manager's approval of my card. She said "i don't see the numbers on it Let's put into perspective, i am prettying much ordering a bowl of soup. No big deal, happy she is doing her job. She doesn't ask to walk away with my IPhone. Just does. Disappeared with my phone to find manager. (Only cashier so line is now getting a little impatient. Manager came back and said " when we zoom in it looks blurry" Me "okay ?" Manager. "Looks like a fake document" Me ", okay it is my real card and i can see everything very clear. So do the other business " Manager said " i need you to step out side the line and stand over against that wall" Lol. Not kidding, he acted like i was going to be arrested. The whole time i was being nice. I replied "okay I will just eat outside. It's not a big deal" The manager replies with a raised voice "OH it is a BIG deal" I said " I am referring to dining out on patio" Him "oh" Moron. Lol. I paid Went to sit on the restaurant OUTDOOR patio. Cashier said "oh NO NOT on out patio. You have to sit outside and VERY far away" There are several amazing restaurants in this area, be nice to customers!!! Went to find a table "very far away from restaurant" she included "oh it will be over 15 minutes " I don't reacted to rude people, even when i am paying them. Instead of here: Go to the pizza place next door or the fabulous restaurants on 4th. No matter how great food is, if you treat people disrespectful, food will never shine. I was the one to recommend dining on patio. (Manager should have given me options, like place order and we will bring it out to you " Why was i told to get out of line ? And still wait in restaurant on a wall ? I wasn't given a reason. To claim my card was a fake, stupid. Even more crazy was the way i was treated. "Okay i will eat outside. It is not a big deal " Jerk. If they do not want to accept photos if cards, then say so. Or say "we won't sell food to you to go or serve it to you outside WItHOuT card" Fine. No one really cares. Just don't treat people poorly. Food is really good. But not worth the aggravation. NOTE: to be fair, i do not know the difficulties restaurants in this part of California are facing with fake cards. Maybe a lot of people in Berkeley carting fake cards? However i should been kindly offer other options. read more

Came here with Z. after the two of us accidentally skipped lunch, so we were famished! Z. got the pork sandwich ($11) and enjoyed it. I got the chicken enchiladas ($13) which were delicious. We just made the happy hour special (M-F, 3-6 pm I believe) so each also got the margarita especial ($9 after taking $2 off) which is tasty. It was not too sweet and had a hint of lime -- we were happy with it. Some minor negative details: The chicken enchilada was served on the colder side and was also a rather small portion size. The cream was a little stinky (as per my breath afterward). But honestly I loved the enchilada sauce, the ambiance, the friendly service. 5/5 for Tacubaya on these details. The tortilla soup was super flavorful! Might have liked a little more chicken in the soup or maybe beans/ corn but honestly broth was so good it was okay. The prices here are pretty good and the food comes quickly. There are a ton of indoor seating and limited outdoor seating that is quite close together. There were lots of dogs around here too and allowed to sit nearby the tables!! read more

The service was horrible, this little girl taking order was real disrespectful. My grienf asked if she could get no Pico de Gallo and the lady told her rudely " It does not come with Pico, rechecl the menu bitch " . Her words, we found the way she was looking at us to be nasty. The food? Also horrible, tasteless and tasted like dog. Everything was plain, my whole group complained becaused of how nasty their Birria Burrito was. Gem in 4th Street area of Berkeley! Felt like I was in Puerto Vallarta again, mmm happy place. We both ordered the tortilla soup which was the perfect winter lunch and a side of chips and guacamole. Hearty, generous serving sizes, including lots of shredded chicken in the soup in a deep red, nicely seasoned broth with chunks of avocado. Couldn't resist the agua de pina (pineapple) drink, very good, but look forward to getting my fave PV drink here next time, the agua de Jamaica (hibiscus flower drink) that they say they usually have. I will bring my spouse here soon! Relaxed, casual festive setting with up and downstairs seating in a cute retail setting. Friendly staff. Reasonable prices. read more

I'll start off by saying that tacos & Mexican food in general is not my expertise. Didn't growing up eating it & the textures of beans have always weirded me out. However, I have tried a lot of Mexican restaurants because everyone in California loves tacos & let me tell you... Tacubaya has the best chicken tacos hands down. The light and crispy taco shell, shredded crispy chicken and tomato salsa... YUM! These chicken tacos are a perfect snack to hold you over for a late lunch or early dinner or grab more food to for a decently priced meal. I wouldn't say the items are cheap, but they are very reasonable for the location. The cashier was so nice and even noticed we were sitting outside and turned on the heaters for us. If We're ever on 4th Street, this is always the place my boyfriend asks to stop by at for a snack! read more

Great place. Very large space. Plenty of space inside and on the patio. No table service but it's a little overpriced and the tacos and burritos are legit. Lots of great frescas and a good happy hour with the house margaritas. Kid and vegan friendly. Their guac and chips is really good as well. read more

I occasionally eat at tacobaya,i always get their salad! The food is authentic, fresh and delicious. I personally enjoy their aguas frescas, I believe its michoacan style cuisine. First time i ate here was at their old location, they moved a few doors over to a much bigger location with tons of more space and seating. Unfortunately this food was terrible from the chicken enchiladas all the way down to the salsa. The chef is obviously sad cos that is reflected in the food. I hope the chef gets happy again soon, but until then I will not be ordering from here. Sincerely some of the worst Mexican food I have ever had, and I have lived in Cali all my life. read more

Amazing food, I have been coming here for about 3 years and reading some reviews from here it's so funny to me. Yes you pay for chips and salsa it's on the menu for a reason. I'm sure all bars and any drinks come with specific measurements so if you ask for no ice then you're still getting what the serving is. If you don't like the portion just don't buy it I guess (even if it's Horchata). Margaritas are amazing and they have a full selection of tequila and mezcal. I think they're more focused on that now. Also I'm so happy they're asking for proof of vaccination and yes they also have signs all over asking for proof so don't pull a Karen. read more

I was casually strolling through 4th street Berkeley one sunny day until I walked into the little corner where Tacubaya is. The store's pink decor caught my attention right away, and I decided to get dinner here shortly after-- definitely a pretty instagram-able spot. Upon entering you order at the register, grab your number tag and sit at a table of your liking. All I ordered were tacos, which were actually pretty pricey $$$, but super delicious nonetheless. I feel like 2-3 tacos will be able to fill you up. My favorite was the Taco de Lengua, and while it was interesting how the Taco de Pollo was served in a crispy taco shell I think the chicken meat was a bit dry. Regardless, I definitely want to come back and try Tacubaya's happy hour drinks next time! read more

The Soggiest Tacos you'll ever have. The meat is good but the tacos are incredibly soggy. Especially the carne asada tacos. Be sure to eat these on-site because they will be absolutely drenched if you take them home with you. Not really sure why they do this but if soggy tacos are your thing, this is the place for you! read more

I saw Tacubaya in the Instagram of @cyneats (a Bay Area food blogger), which featured her seating in front of the cute pink bar, and knew I had to come here before leaving. It is a casual Mexican spot on 4th Street in West Berkeley a block away from the Apple Store. You order at the register (including drinks), get a number, and choose a seat. There are two floors, and there are some seats at the bar, which were busy when we arrived around 6:30 pm on a Friday. Food 4/5: I've only tried their churros and fried plantains and liked both. They weren't particularly unique or different, but quite good nonetheless. Drinks 4.5/5: In my couple of visits, my friends and I tried all their margaritas (in all fairness, there are only three to choose from). All were good, but Mezcal Margarita was my favorite. I found them to be on the pricier side for the type of place Tacubaya is though. Ambiance 3/5: I found it to be not very put together if that makes sense. Upstairs reminded me of a fast food restaurant with shaky metal tables. A few instagrammable spots though, but you might have to play with editing a little to make the lighting in your favor. Service 5/5: They were quick, nice, and even gave us a piece of cake for free! When my phone was dead, they agreed to charge it, as well. One complaint I have about Tacubaya (probably 4th street in general) is that is closed way too early! They work until 9 pm on Friday, which was a big surprise to me. read more

What a sorry ass excuse for "Mexican food"!!! I say "Mexican food" with quotation marks because they know good and damn well that this sh*t ain't no REAL Mexican food. This food was straight up garbage and with the exception of the cashier, the service was garbage too. I was in the mood for tacos and noticed that this spot was right down the street. It seemed to be bustling so I went inside. You order at the counter, take a number, and they'll deliver your food to you. First things first; their prices are pretty damn outrageous. $4.25 for a f*cking taco??? They better be the tacos from GAWD with those high ass prices! I probably should have just left then, but since I was there I decided to take a chance. I mean, you never know... they very well COULD have been the tacos from Gawd. Chips and salsa aren't complimentary here either and costs a whopping $3. Maybe I'm just hella cheap, but one of my biggest pet peeves is having to pay for chips and salsa, especially when they aren't even good. Maybe chips and guac, but chips and salsa? And for $3??? HELLS naw! Welp... I got them anyways. What's a taco without the chips and salsa? Went all in and got their cucumber-lime fresca drink too. The drink wasn't half bad. However, everything ELSE was deplorable. They delivered my chips first. I swear I must have chipped a tooth when I bit into those chips. Stale as F*CK!!! These chips tasted like they had been sitting out on the counter for 5 damn years! Now, normally I wouldn't trip off of some chips. But, since I had to drop $3 on some sh*t that's usually FREE at other restaurants, I asked them if they could make me a fresh batch. When I asked one of the staff members, she said that she had to ask her manager. Um... okay. Do what you have to do. But in my mind, I'm like... how hard is it to f*cking fry up some tortillas? Clearly, I hadn't eaten the ones that I had, so it wasn't like I was trying to get "more" because the ones I had were rock hard. I waited... and waited... and WAITED. I finally walked downstairs and tried to get the attention of another staff member. Everyone basically ignored me. Not a good look. If you can't do it, then fine. But, don't just have me sitting there and then never return to let me know? I finally went back up to the cashier to explain the situation. The cashier was actually nice enough to go to the back to talk to someone. He told me that they would remake me a fresh batch. I was grateful for his help since the rest of the staff seemed to be avoiding me. While I waited, my tacos came out. I was too hungry to wait for the chips and salsa first, so I started eating them right away. DAAAAYUM! The tacos were SO disappointing! There was NO flavor at ALL! It was like they broiled the chicken in hot water and threw it in the tacos. Bland as F*CK!! I was already heated. I had already finished the tacos when the new batch of chips and salsa was delivered to my table. The lady who delivered my chips said that they never make a new batch of chips for one person and that they made an exception for me. I didn't know whether to take that as a good thing or not. On one hand, I'm grateful that they did it because I paid for these damn chips. But it also made me think; do they just fry one batch of chips at the beginning of the day and just leave them out? Are they using old stales ass chips from the previous day? Who knows, but if I'm paying for chips, they shouldn't be stale. So get this; the chips were indeed freshly cooked. They weren't stale. BUT... they were HELLA F*CKING SALTY!!! So salty, that I couldn't even eat them. All of that work to get a fresh batch, and I STILL couldn't eat the sh*t! Good f*cking GAWD! I was so pissed. I just got up and left. Is this REALLY the sister restaurant of Dona Tomas? I wouldn't even admit that to anyone because this place was HORRIBLE! Overhyped, overpriced, tasteless, and a waste of my f*cking time. NEVER again! read more

Their sandwiches are probably what first got me hooked. The bread is so good, with a chewy inside and a nice crust, and the fillings are always fresh and flavorful. The combinations are also really well thought out. From there, I started working my way through the rest of the menu. I've had their Kouign Amann, Quiche Lorraine, croissants, baguette, Sourdough Batard, Sunflower Rye Spelt, pretzel buns (you can probably tell I'm a bread person), pies, seasonal radicchio salad, and passionfruit madeleines. Their seasonal radicchio salad has actually become one of my favorites to take to work for lunch. I also love that they rotate the Kouign Amann flavors, so there's usually something new to try whenever I stop by. I've enjoyed almost everything I've had here. One pie was a little too sweet for me personally, but that's really the only thing that comes to mind. I also really like the presentation and the atmosphere. The pastry case always looks beautiful and tempting, and the space feels relaxed and welcoming. It's easy to pop in and grab something, but it's also a nice place to meet friends for coffee and something sweet. The prices feel very reasonable for the quality, which is another reason I keep coming back. More than anything, I just really enjoy having Starter Bakery in the area. I didn't want to eat at this place. It's never appealed to me at all. If you see a Mexican restaurant,or one that purports to be Mexican,and there isn't a singleMexican eating in there, do a U turn and walk straight out. That tells about how authentic the food is (or else it's just too damn expensive to bother with). The thing is, my date really wanted to eat there. They were having an outdoor cook-out, in the plaza, and it was a hot day, nice to be outside. I tried to explain why it didn't appeal to me, but he wanted to try it, and I didn't want to get into problem on the first date,and so relented. What really set up a red flag is that there was a MAN out there making tortillas. Make no mistake, I'm a feminist. I believe in sharing all the household roles, and not sticking it al l on the woman. But look, if you don't know this, making tortillas is not something you can learn by on the job training. Tortilla making takes years of daily practice. In Mexico and Central America, the women are the ones who make the tortillas, and usually they start at about age 6 or 7. It's the daily grind (literally), in the kitchen for hours every day, grinding corn and patting out tortillas by hand, day after day, year after year. Even if you use a press, it takes years of practice to be able to get the right amount, drop it on the Comal (the flat griddle over the fire), know the exact time to turn it over, and the exact time to take it off. Also,they burn their hands to the point that they don't feel the heat anymore, and can literally stick their hands through the fire (watch them) without flinching. It is Extremely Rare to find any man who can do that. It simply is not the custom, and the boys are taken to work in the fields, and don't hang around the kitchen. Well, this man absolutely could not do it. He was using an ICE CREAM SCOOP to scoop up the masa (corn dough)----Oh NO! You don't do it like this! He could not stand the heat, so was using a spatula to turn them--NO NO NO!! And, you guessed it, they totally SUCKED. Tortillas have to be cooked just the right time, which, again, is a skill learned over years of practice. These tortillas were Raw Inside--Yuck! They were mealy, nasty, and for me, completely indelible. If you aren't Mexican, it may not matter to you. You just eat the food, and may not even notice. BUT if you are Mexican, or grew up eating mexican food, this is totally UNACCEPTABLE. Tortillas are a main part of any Mexican meal. The are the pillars of it. If the tortillas aren't right, the meal isn't right. I can't even remember what I ate. But I Will never forget this awful experience! YUCK! read more

we go here because sometimes going all the way to fruitvale or the city is a pain. the food is good, solid and fairly genuine. *the rellenos are good, better when you get a spicy one, better at dona tomas. *the "con todo" is pretty tasty and is great when you are feeling under the weather or hung-over. *the ceviche is a hit or miss and the black beans need to be cooked with more animal fat. or better yet, the cooks need to be able to do their thing and add more UMPHF as they see fit. *their special blue bottle coffee blend goes well with the breakfast (rancheros are decent, need more sauce) and keeps you running ALL day. **the tacos are the best deal monetarily: *****tacos al pastor are in my top 3 in all of the bay area. ***then the carne asada. **for the fish they give you 4 tortillas with 2 tacos and you can usually spread out the meat and fill your self up real well. and if you get the guac and chips, that's all you'll need and you won't feel like you spent your $$ on 4th street. very high 3 stars- for the tacos. read more

Tacubaya is a gem in Berkeley's 4th Street shopping district that I've visited multiple times, and it never disappoints. The service is consistently kind and quick, making each visit enjoyable. The food is absolutely delicious, with fresh ingredients and meats that are always juicy and packed with flavor. I've tried various dishes, including their tacos and enchiladas, and every bite has been fantastic. I love the decor and sitting at the bar is my favorite. This used to be our go-to place for a quick bite at 7 or 8 at night at the bar. We can deal with the new location's decor (tho' we don't love it--it's even noisier if that's possible, and ditch the mirrors already...), and the food looks the same but does *not* taste the same. The rice had no flavor and the texture was off. The black beans, usually addicting, were meh---after the first bite, didn't care if I had a second. The tacos and enchiladas are now mediocre at best, the tortillas were uncooked or poorly made, or both, not sure. Seems like a move next door shouldn't also change the dishes, but our experience shows that the cooking methods and ingredients have changed for the worse. We tried twice at the new location. We won't try again. There are so many great Mexican spots in Oakland; will head there instead from now on. read more

On multiple occasions, I have received excellent service at this establishment. However, I must express my extreme dissatisfaction with the ceviche I ordered. My girlfriend and I developed severe food poisoning, resulting in my inability to work tomorrow. The discomfort I am experiencing is unprecedented in my lifetime. This unfortunate occurrence is likely attributed to the establishment's negligence in allowing the shrimp to sit in lemon juice for an insufficient duration to effectively cure the bacteria. While consuming raw meat inherently carries risks, I was not anticipating such a severe reaction. I am deeply saddened by this event. Give me a break people!! You want cheap, standard mexican joint food, go to a taco truck in fruitvale, or the mission!!! This isn't ordinary mexican food... They put things like squash, plantains and raisins in the chile relleno . Do you know what "whenever possible we use organic produce, dairy and meat" means? It's going to be more expensive! Yes, the tortillas on the Quesadillas are small but they were just cooked 3 minutes ago and are made from corn. Do you really want a burrito sized corn tortilla, I think not. So first and foremost I still love this place. We have been eating here for years. We live in Georgia now but visit often. Our absolute favorite is the shredded beed enchiladas. We were there mid February and were so disappointed. We ordered our beef enchiladas rice beans and guacamole. To our surprise we could barely find the beef in the enchiladas. This has never happened before. I will go out on a limb and guess due to the rise in beef costs, tbey have cut back. I rather pay a bit more and get an actual full beef enchilada. 12 Hours after eating an al pastor taco, I came down with a terrible case of food poisoning and spent the next 3 days in the hospital. My wife immediately called the restaurant to advise them what happened and while the manager was quite concerned, asked what I ate, took our phone number and said the owner, Dona, would get in touch with us. That was over a week ago and we never heard from her. While some restaurants will unknowingly serve tainted food from time to time, when they're notified they usually take quick action. Hands down my favorite place to have fun in all of Berkeley and Oakland. Actually anywhere. I ALWAYS get the salad, a side of the amazing beans, and chips. Boring you might say. Chicken mole was pretty tasty but not as dark and mole-y as I had thought. The chicken was shredded. Spinach was good but for my meat-eater palate, lacks a little something. We wandered her to block down the street and discovered this lovely hole in the wall. They have a diverse menu with every thing you could want from a Mexican joint: enchiladas, fajitas, burritos (even breakfast burritos), tacos, even plates with plentiful vegetables, rice, beans, and salsa. There are places to sit outside both around back in the garden and out front in the sun. The people who were here are super nice (and will even give you extra cheese if you ask!) I came here with a large group to watch a world cup game on a Thursday. Thankfully, it wasn't too busy, and I was able to get seated immediately. The staff was extremely friendly as they helped me get situated and turned on the TVs, provided water pitchers, and put tables together. They have a great selection of food and drinks for their happy hour. I wish I tried everything! The pricing is super affordable, but be careful because the drinks are strong, and if the company is good, that bill will go up! I tried a bunch of food from here: oysters, ceviche, buffalo wings, loaded fries, potato flautas, street corn, chilaquiles and a fried fish. Everything was beyond my expectations and so good!
