Dont let pictures nor the hype fool you... I was let down from their ceviche which was supposed to include cooked shrimp... I've been here over 3 years ago and the experience was ok. But now, I never noticed their carne asada tacos are cooked medium rare... Almost $5 for a taco. The red sauce that goes on the taco has no flavor and looks like green salsa tastes better on top of the tacos to be honest. When we ordered the ceviche it came without shrimp. How does that happen? When I asked what happened they provided extra shrimp mixed in there but it didnt taste good at all. Price for this is between $12.50 or something. We only dipped a few chips in the sauce after tasting a shrimp.. Honestly it tasted like chlorine... Next time please offer another option and check-in with the customer to see if it satisfied us because this did NOT. Had we received an offer to order something else then I'd reconsider on leaving this disappointed honest review. To Customers: DO NOT ORDER CEVICHE HERE! This was the first time I've gone to a place where what I ordered so was different from what I received. I ordered an al pastor torta and what I received was not at all al pastor- in the cut of pork or in the seasoning/flavoring. What I received was essentially a dry ass carnitas torta. The meat was dry and almost stringy. It's a minor complaint, but the torta also wasn't fully cut in half where I had to rip it fully apart myself. If this was actually a good al pastor torta, this wouldn't have bothered me. I'll give it to them the portion for the torta was pretty good for the price. read more

Torta Al Pastor, how I love thee. Your buns are the perfect blend of supple and fluffy. Your filling spills out and I often need a fork to ensure I savor every little bit. Seasoned wonderfully, stuffed with avocado and slaw, my mouth is watering thinking about it tbh. We had some extra time before picking kiddo up from preschool so we did a sit down situation instead of our usual takeout. It was right around noon so the place was empty! By the time we left, it was much busier with hungry lunch patrons. Spouse got the sope with chorizo and potatoes and he said it was good! The tortilla chips weren't the best but I ENJOYED THE SALSA VERY MUCH. It's self-serve water which we have no problem with at all. You also should bus when you're done. There's convenient stations in the front and back and I like the upstairs seating option. It's a vibe! I've been going to Tacubaya for brunch on the weekends for years. It never disappoints. Fluffy scrambled eggs with chorizo, chilaquiles, delicious sopes, these are my favorites, but everything they make is fresh, authentic, and incredibly delicious. They create deep, intense flavors that don't feel heavy or overpowering. Even after a big brunch, I don't feel weighted down or sluggish. Just really happy. And if you stayed out a little late the night (or nights) before, it's the perfect hangover cure. Brunch on weekends can get busy, but don't worry. Lines go fast, and before you know it, you're looking at a big plate of chilaquiles that will satisfy, guaranteed. The service is excellent. Everyone is super helpful and friendly. We recently discovered Tacubaya and have been back a few times already. They offer convenient free parking but it does get full on weekends. I'm a fan of the tortilla soup and corn and my wife likes the salad with roasted pumpkin seeds. The tacos are also great. Great location for a good meal. read more

Wonderful location on 4th street in Berkeley so worth a stop if shopping and strolling bring you to the neighborhood. Menu is varied with lots of options and specials. My go to is the Mexican soup and their homemade chips are great . My one complaint remains the service isn't great ( staff not overly friendly or welcoming), and the tables , seats and benches are not cleaned up timely. Enjoy! read more

I come here all the time with my best friend/ex girlfriend. And we hang at the bar and enjoy delicious cocktails. They make the best margaritas in the area and have really good seasonal cocktails too. My favorite foods are sope de chorizo, and carne asada tacos and burritos. Was walking around the area on the weekend and heard music on the street playing. This was one of the restaurants right outside where we could sit and enjoy the view while having some food. We tried a few items: ceviche, sopes, quesadilla & tacos. The ceviche was alright, the chips that come with the item tasted good. The sope was loaded and was probably the best thing I tried there. Following the quesadilla, it came in 3 taco size tortillas. The quesadilla has cheese, chicken and sauce inside- topped with sauce + cilantro. I did not get a chance to read the description on the menu but did not expect the quesadilla to come out like that, it was still good. Then there were the al pastor tacos, it was the tortilla + meat and green sauce. They did have limes on the side but also I expected the tacos to have cilantro and onions on top. We absolutely adore Tacubaya, and have been here so many times! Their tacos are legendary. Legendary. Fresh and savory, next to being in San Antonio, they're the best tacos I've ever had. Although I'm also a big fan of their red rice and sweet plantains if I had to play favorites. The service is always friendly and prompt and the wait is always short, plus they have a small bench to make use of while you wait if you're going the take out route (which we usually do). I recently started working from an office on Fourth Street in Berkeley so I'm always looking for good lunch options within walking distance. Tacubaya has a great location, centrally located amongst the shops along Fourth Street. It has a nice atmosphere with plenty of indoor seating (and fewer outdoor seating). I ordered the "special" of the day which was a carnitas burrito. IMO, the burrito was on the smaller size (based on the $14 price) and had very little meat (mostly rice). I might try this location again but not sure based on value or quality of food. read more

Rude Staff. Had dinner there on Friday Dec 8 and the man and woman who were working front of the house (taking orders at the cash register) were incredibly rude. Treated me and my family like we were an annoyance, used an irritated and condescending tone to answer my question about the menu, and had the worst look on their face when speaking to me. I know it's hard to come by workers these days, so that's the only way I can imagine their behavior is tolerated. The restaurant was not that busy, and there was nobody in line behind us, so it's not like we were holding up the line. I've worked in the restaurant industry for years, so I know when it's a customer issue or when it's a service issue, and this man and woman were just straight rude. Every time we come here the service is so rude. They always seem perturbed and give off DMV level enthusiasm to be interacting with you. The food is good, but today's experience was the last straw for us. We missed the sign about eating outside and the staff decided to take the opportunity to let us know very loudly (as if to publicly shame us). It was hostile and off putting. Did we make a mistake and miss the sign? Sure. Is this reason enough to treat us, aka people AND customers, so poorly? No, there's no excuse for that. I stopped by Fourth Street in Berkeley this afternoon to grab a quick bite to eat in between customer visits. Since I frequented this area when I lived in the East Bay, I recall positive dining experiences back then and decided to stop at Tacubaya. First noticeable change is now this eatery is where Cafe Rouge used to be (another favorite place in my past)! I had the taco de pollo and taco de pescado. Both were delicious especially with the fresh lime and salsa and satisfied my hunger while not overstuffing me. Next visit, will try more adventurous food from their exciting menu! read more

My family and I were excited to go to Tacubaya for dinner. Upon arriving, a women approached the register. I can see by her body language she wanted to go home. Her customer services was horrible. Rushing us to order the food. Proceeded to not listen, and got the order incorrect. By looking at yer staff, they are affected by how this women, probably the manager, mood is. The service was not friendly, the people delivering the food were not friendly as well., just dropping the food at the table. The ambiance could have been better if the manager had a better attitude: One of the worst experiences I have had in customer service. My husband who never complains, was not happy by the service and the manager . My daughter wanted to simple made, the women said nope we can't do that for you. She was extremely rude to my daughter. It will be a long time till I come back here. The owner should be aware that the people especially the manager is not what you call a professional. The motor remind you the customer is always right. We came across this place on Yelp. The reviews didn't seem convincing but we still went. I ordered the Torta Al Pastor, chips and salsa, and the hibiscus margarita. Torta is 10/10, honestly good torta, different of what I have ever tasted in Mexico but really good. The margarita also 10/10, great tasting not too strong not too weak. There are places in Concord that kill it so a bit skewed. Price - higher than other places Ambiance - nice restaurant seating first and second floor with a small outdoor patio. Also so good. The chips were mediocre at best but the food was good. Nothing comes with it so everything will cost you. SERVICE: Non-existent. Other than bringing food out to you they don't do much. You have to stand in line to order. You have to get your drinks and utensils. And you have to bus your table. They shouldn't ask for a tip on the receipt. COST: Pricey for what you get. They nickel and dime you which is my problem. Chips extra. Rice extra. Beans extra. Really? If the food wasn't so good I would rate it lower. And our tiny sope was eight dollars. Particularly disappointing. Ordered the chicken tacos ($6 per taco) and "pitcher" of margarita ($26 for a mere pint!). I expected the tacos to be either filling or exceptional for the absurd price, but sadly they were bland and not satiating (I'm not a person with a huge appetite). Also expected the margarita to be fantastic for the insane price, but although it wasn't bad, there was absolutely nothing special about it. Chicken Crispy Tacos is a MUST!!! I love the type of chicken they used. I can't believe I come here so many times and yet I haven't given a review. My boyfriend usually get it to go. He always get the crispy chicken tacos and veggie tacos. I love how it's not overly greasy or loaded with salt. their side peppers that comes with is fire it taste so good. The last time I ate here was probably over 15 years ago and I wasn't impressed with the food. This time the flavor of the food really stood out. The guacamole was enjoyable. The thick tortilla chips served well with the large chunks of avocado. The shredded chicken breast meat and cheese enchilada with tomatillo sauce was also good. Not to overwhelming. Came across Tacubaya while we were on 4th St., and I was very happy with our visit. We were looking for something quick since we needed to be somewhere in 2 hours, and this was the perfect spot. My boyfriend and I both ordered the Torta al Pastor, and it was porky-pineappley-deliciousness. I'm not a huge fan of mayo, so whenever I order a sando with mayo, I always ask them to leave it off, but when I saw aioli on the menu for this torta, I figured I'd try it because it didn't have any crema, which is what I'm used to seeing in my torta. So glad I did, because it made the sandwich! On the way out, my boyfriend ordered an horchata to-go, which was a little too sweet and had too much cinnamon for my liking. Bright, fun taco spot. The vibrant pink, green, and orange walls feel so cheerful, especially after a long covid winter. The space feels very open and inviting. Tacubaya has reopened for indoor dining, with seating available on their main floor and upper level. Tables are spaced at least 6 feet apart. My friend and I visited at 6 on a Friday night and were able to order right away. I ordered an al pastor taco and a side salad. The meat was juicy and tender, and the flavors were on point. Prices get reasonable for the Bay Area. Great spot to try if you're in the 4th street area and craving tacos! read more

Would I go back: If someone really wanted to I would go but not by my choice. I wouldn't say Mexican is a cuisine I frequent so I might not be the expert on what is good and what is not. Food: Tacos de Pollo - 3/5 - Pretty Standard faire I'd say. Meat and cheese wrapped up in a shell...nothing to write home about. Churros - 3.5/5 - These were decent. I guess I'm used to a perfect stick which may not be quite as authentic but I can't say no to sugar. Service: 3/5 - Standard service. It's not quite a sit down place but more cafeteria like.
