Wow, I think I came in on a good day. Today was my first time trying Tacubaya and now I'm hooked. The ambiance was awesome. They had live music outside and people dancing. I ordered the season tostada - blue corn tostada with puréed black beans, plantains, and cabbage. WOW - I wasn't expecting this vegetarian flavor bomb. We were able to place an online reservation request for dinner for our party of 6 (they hold the table for 10 minutes), and we were glad we did as the restaurant was packed on a Saturday night! We ordered fish taco, carnitas taco, two lengua tacos, a shredded beef enchilada, and a beef and chicken enchilada. We also ordered chips with guacamole and salsa. I personally had the fish taco and the carnitas taco. I loved the carnitas taco , it was absolutely delicious. The meat was tender and perfectly seasoned. The fish taco was good as well, but next time I would prefer it on a hard shell instead of a soft shell. My dad had the lengua tacos and said the lengua was very tender and flavorful. He said he would definitely order them again. My husband really enjoyed his enchiladas and thought they were very good. We also ordered wine with our meal, and our food came out right away. One of my favorite places to eat when in Berkeley especially on 4th street. This visit was lunchtime. I ordered the tuna ceviche in a red sauce. It was tasty and they gave me plenty of chips. My partner ordered the tamales Verduro, a favorite of ours. They have the best vegetarian Mexican fare as well as meats and fish. Check out their menu to see what they have seasonal. There is usually a short line to order. The counter folks are very kind and happy yo help with any questions. You order and get a place card do they know where to bring your food. Also you can order from the QR code on it. The current place was once occupied by the Cafe Rouge (sigh) l miss you!! But Tacubaya is cheerful and has a nice and casual atmosphere. Tldr: best zucchini taco I've tasted but other tacos not as impressive We stopped by for Sunday dinner and got a corn & zucchini taco, pescado taco (fish), and lengua taco (beef tongue). We meant to order the tortilla soup but I think there may have been a miscommunication when ordering and we ended up with something else that we think is sopa de chorizo. The zucchini taco had a really nice balance of flavors and all the elements in it were well done, which enhanced the flavor. I haven't seen zucchini tacos in other places but for now this place definitely takes the cake. On the other hand, the pescado and lengua taco were pretty ordinary and not as flavorful. The fried fish wasn't very crunch either so it lacked texture-wise as well. The sopa was seasoned well but the bready part underneath felt a little hard. Overall, I think we'd come back for the zucchini taco and maybe to try other items but we've probably had better tacos in other places. We started with the spiced hot chocolate, which was delicioso, a perfect treat for cold weather. It normally comes with whipped cream, but we had it removed and opted for plant-based milk. They also offer a fully vegan version. Both the vegan and non-vegan hot chocolates were delicious. I ordered the pozole. It was okay, though I'll admit I'm very picky. My mom's pozole is always at the top of my list, but this one definitely satisfied the craving. We also tried the tostadas. One was vegan and very filling; my partner thought it was awesome. I came here today for lunch before going to Sur La Table to go shopping. My crunchy chicken taco had very dry chicken. I wish they put more salsa in it. The chicken was pretty bland and overly fried on the edges. My hubby enjoyed his Al Pastor sandwich and there was a lot of avocado in it. It's like a panini sandwich with tender pork. The beans and rice was good but nothing special. Service was good and it was very quick. This is a very busy location with lots of children. There's a balcony where a toddler was throwing things over and screaming the whole time. I'll try to come back on weekdays during work hours to avoid loud children throwing things. We were immediately greeted by Ricardo who promptly took our order and gave us great recommendations for appetizers and entrees. I wanted to order everything and all the dishes coming out of the kitchen looked amazing and so fresh. The service was excellent and our food came out quickly. Ricardo even checked up on us to see how everything was. The restaurant (including the bathroom) was very clean. We sat at the bar and they have a great selection of beverages (alcoholic and nonalcoholic). We WILL come here again and I highly recommend this restaurant. Maybe my tastebuds have changed, but my all time favorite, papas con crema was not what I remembered. It was still tasty, but not the same. Maybe the recipe was changed to reflect current tastes of whoever is making it now. The quesadillas en nogada - interesting choice to use toasted pecans instead of walnuts. I went here last weekend on a date and we had a great experience! A huge thank you to the staff- we got there probably 30 minutes before closing and they were still very friendly and welcoming. We also accidentally stayed several minutes after closing and no one said anything to us (we finally noticed and apologized and they couldn't have been any nicer). The food is plated nicely and looks great when it arrives, which I appreciated. You order and pay at the counter and then sit down to wait for your food, which is fine, but once it arrived I was underwhelmed. The dishes were just okay -- lacking flavor and pretty basic, especially considering the high prices. It felt way overpriced for what we got. Another downside was the bathroom. When I went in, there was no toilet paper, no seat covers, and trash on the floor. That really took away from the overall experience. Cons: the food was not good. Needed more salt. The food was very oily. I could see oil dripping from the fish taco. The tortilla chips were also oily. There was not enough sauce on the Al pastor taco. The horchata tasted sour. I am sure it was spoiled. 1/3 salsas tasted good (the red spicy salsa, the green salsa lacked flavor, the pico de gallo tasted sweet). I sat upstairs with my friend and there is a staff room upstairs. It smelled like smoke. I asked the waitress for a to go box and she seemed passive aggressive telling me to get the items downstairs. The prices are expensive too and not justifiable for the taste and quality of the food. For example: Guac and chips $14. $5 per taco. I would steer away from coming here. read more

To note, the plates are mostly served a la carte, so def. something to keep in mind if you're with a large group and want to explore your tastebuds! Besides lunch, they also serve brunch options, happy hour, dinner, dessert, and a beautiful beer/wine/cocktail menu. The food was delicious, enchiladas were clean and tastefully done. Huge fan of table guac and this didn't disappoint. Looking forward to coming back and trying more from the menu and with the weather starting to improve, sit outside. Man Tacubaya, my opinion of you has drastically changed since my first few visits from years ago. I have to say, I absolutely love your new location and interior. The colors and dining area is more inviting and large. Another plus is the second floor seating as well as the porch seating for those that was to admire a lovely day outside. At times the service can be hit or miss but I contribute that to the lunch rush and how chaotic it can be. However, I've experienced good service more so than the latter. Especially if you sit at the bar and because of this, I really enjoy their Paloma. Also, My favorite meal is their Children's quesadilla with steak bites.
