I placed my post-workout to-go order while shopping nearby after my heated class around the corner. I cannot remember when I had Tacos El Rey last, but everything was made fresh and delicious. I ordered an asada burrito for myself, menudo for the hubby, tacos and chicken quesadilla for the kids. Service was great, the lady helping me was patient and offered recommendations and watered down my agua fresca to be less sweet for me. The restaurant was quiet with only a few patrons dining. The tables were clean and the restaurant was cool from the drying heat outside. I was given plenty salsa and this was always a complaint at their other stores that they limit your salsa even while dining in. We had a great dinner and I'll pick up from here again since I seem to be in the neighborhood more often lately. read more

Stopped in for a quick lunch..ive always loved this place and location.nice little place with nice staff and tables always fully stocked with sauces for your convenience! I never really got anything else but the carnitas or chicken tacos.. but today I decided to try their quesabirria and cheese enchilada...im happy i did.. The quesabirria didn't come with consomé but it actually didn't need it. The meat was so juicy and full of flavor.. I love cheese enchiladas..it's all about the sauce and how it's prepared.. I like them not overly saucy and a good rich or bold flavor sauce..goes well with the cheese..lettuce and onions add a good touch of freshness and cuts alittle through the sauce.. these had all that.. This is an update. I'm so HAPPY to be here today. I was in this area again and hungry. I read my previous review to remind myself. (:-) I wasn't happy when she said they only have street tacos. I grew up on crispy tacos and I'm not into street tacos. THEN she suggested Flautas. I've always had them made with flour tortillas. THESE are made with corn tortillas and hand rolled...to order...STUFFED with chicken or beef. So much meet the tortilla barely closed. Then topped with lettuce, cheese and avocado. SOOOO DELICIOUS. And a wonderful substitute if you're in the mood for crispy tacos. Beware they do not have a truly MILD sauce but green was milder than red. This time I asked to SEE the flan before I ordered it. It looked wonderful. Lots of "juice". And it IS WONDERFUL. Nice and sweet. And REAL FLAN. So many places must use instant. It's hard to find flan like this today. I have been craving Tacos El Rey frequently, this time I brought my mom with me to try it out since she is a big fan of street style tacos. We both ordered Combination plate #4, three tacos with rice and beans, and the portion is a great size! You might even have leftovers. I ordered al pastor, deshebrada, and pollo tacos with my plate. Once again, they were super delicious! I really enjoy the radishes and limes on top. My mom enjoyed her food as well! We also ordered margaritas, which were giant. They did taste like the were only margarita mixer, but for the price, I'm not unhappy. The service was good, we ordered up front and paid, and the food came out pretty fast! I really enjoy the small size of the restaurant and how casual it is. You can't go wrong with the prices here, I feel like it is a great deal for high quality Mexican food. They bring the food to you. 3 types of hot sauces are available. Wide variety of sauces, proteins and soups. Of course, the standard burritos, tacos and nachos are there. Chips weren't stale and they give you two different salsa dips which is great for other people that like a variety. But the food came out quick and I would def come back. Absolutely amazing! The great service, incredible food, and cleanliness are 10/10 perfect! We have never had anything bad from here and we've also never had a bad time. The ladies behind the counter are always entertaining because of their roaring laughter about something funny in conversation, or singing along to the music playing on the radio. They are all so very nice too. We love this location specifically because we live close by, but also because of the great times we've had. I have many favorites on the menu, but I'll just suggest a few. The Chilaquiles is a must! The Carne Asada fries are very good and the meat is perfectly tender. We would either go to Lodi to the taco wagon or to La Favorita... It was only a little after 11, so I had no one behind to rush me. I ordered the combo carne asada tacos, a chicken flauta and... nachos!.. Usually the taco places have complimentary chips and salsa, or pico de Gallo station... but not here. So a little disappointed! I was impressed with the flauta.. not oily, crispy, and generous with a tiny slice of avocado. The nachos were good and I appreciate not having that yucky nacho sauce!! After I got tired of Roberto's high prices and downhill service & servings, Tacos El Rey is now the place to go for Carne Asada Fries. The servings are huge and I usually split it with someone. They also have some great soups like pozole and albondigas. They give you some fresh chips and salsa. While they aren't open 24 hrs,they are open 10am-9pm everyday. PS - they have Mexican Coke (S-$2, L-$2.50) which tastes way better than the canned or fountain version. read more

No beuno. Long story short, my dad wanted a lengua (beef tongue) burrito and Del Taco doesn't have them. I remembered my monthly coupon for Tacos El Ray and on the back of the coupon is their menu. My parents evacuated Tahoe from the fire and are currently staying with me in the meantime. A simple dinner on the first night was of course...burritos. I called the order in and went to pick them up. The cashier was 5*, super friendly and also gave my the free chips and guacamole with a minimum purchase of $20. Salsa, nothing great. Chips, really thick and verrrryyy greasy, the bag was completely drenched the next morning. Burritos, nothing but rice. No egg, lengua, or beef to be found. We were slightly disappointed. My parents are spoiled in Tahoe with a few great burrito shops with authentic Mexican flare, loaded meat sans the rice, rare homemade salsa and HOT sauce type of burritos. They weren't impressed. Oops. I've never been to Tacos El Ray and keep their coupons all the time and I've been working across the street from them for almost 6.5 years. Sad to say I don't think I will return. Decided to try another Mexican food place near South Meadows, as I have been going to Super Taquiria on Double Diamond for far too long. I want to see what their competitors on this side of town had to offer. It wasnt busy, no one in line so ordered from the beautiful cashier. I ordered 3 tamales(pork) and 2 carne asada tacos to go. With a large ice tea. The tea was actually good, and its a crap shoot everytime you order tea, because sometimes its spoiled and not fresh and that sucks. This tea was fresh. I got my order in a bag and off i went back to work. Their were like 4 tables with messes on them (11:30a on a Friday), and that should have been cleaned up i think, looked messy. Got back to work, and viewed my feast. There were 2 tamales and 3 tacos, exactly the opposite numbers on the items i ordered. The tamales were ok, more spicy than these types of places make but they were ok still. The tacos were pretty standard too, nothing to scream about. I did enjoy the salsa, it was delicious! I guess ill stick with Super Taquiria up the street. They havent been beat yet, and their tamales are superior. read more

This restaurant lacked flavor specifically in the meat for the burrito which was what my husband ordered. The meat was bland and looked like it had been boiled the texture was kinda rubbery. I had a fish taco and a shrimp ceviche tostada. I was expecting the fish taco to be Ensenada style (dipped in batter then fried) but I was wrong. It also was flavorless and so was the salsa that they gave us. A true Mexican restaurant should have a really good and really spicy salsa! First and last visit here. If you are not Latin, they will ignore you. When trying to place an order the girl at the counter found it more interesting to clean something off her shirt and I stood there for several minutes waiting for her to notice me.
