Its a very quaint place. Where you can have family or friends. They have outdoor and indoor seating. The entrance is the front, but I have seen people come through the deck, as parking is back there. They just walk up to the hostess booth. The parking lot is small and cam house most of the patrons. If not there are plenty of street parking that are either metered or not. Just depends if you want to pay or not. We orders a quesadilla for the little ones and them some not street tacos for us. The tacos have plenty of protein so dont over order. Worse case you can take them home. We also got some appetizers. The ahi was fresh. Their was a culmination of citrus and a sauce. I can't put my foot on. But it was delicious. Since we also had some chips and dip. I did place some ahi onto of the chips for some crunch. I rate the service a 5 out of 5. They were attentive, even with the dinner rush. They gathered plates and provided water in good time. They were so prompt with the food as well. It came out fresh and quickly. We ordered another taco as one of the little ones preferred carne asada. Great service staff for sure. Must go to place, if your ever downtown.
Ooookaaaay mexcal! I wish there was a location closer to home! The taco selection was tasty and the drink selection was also very delicious. Stopped in for a snack before a late dinner reservation and I was sad I couldn't dig in more. There were a lot of gluten free options so I was super excited to have some variety instead of struggling through just a couple to choose from. I decide on the grilled mahi taco and the portion was really large! The yucatan coconut was my drink of choice which perfect paired with my taco. The servers were really nice and knew the ingredients and food handling for gluten free items and what was safest for me. I felt comfortable eating there as someone with celiac. Wish I lived closer but I will be back if I'm in Reno again.
What a cute place!! I had a chicken dorado taco & a shrimp soft taco. When they came I didn't know how to eat them especially the shrimp taco as it was stuffed with meat & toppings!! The tacos were amazing and very filling. My server Abel was so nice and very attentive & accommodating. I had a Paloma and it was very good! The inside is warm & inviting. It's not a huge place but there was a bar and plenty of tables. If you're in Reno & want good tacos I highly recommend this place.
It's been awhile since I have been here. Went for lunch and loved the tacos. The chips and salsa better than I remember. So fresh in taste and texture. Fairly priced and fantastic options. I had the Mahi taco and it was delicious. Service was prompt as I walked through the door and water and chips arrived quickly. Welcoming and clean throughout. Light music in the background. Definitely coming back for the margaritas.
Absolute masterpiece of a restaurant! I love the concept of à la carte ordering and then layering on delicious food and expert service... a match made in heaven. Mexcal is a taco joint serving up elevated tacos that you can order one by one. These things are loaded up with protein and toppings, and they do not skimp on the portions! The flavor combinations are absolutely unreal, and I love that they have some unique protein options, too. I tried the duck confit, the spicy lamb, and the short rib tacos. My dad ordered the al pastor and quesabirria tacos. We both agreed that the short rib was our favorite. Tender short rib in a delicious sauce topped with fresh guac. Fantastic! I was also shocked by how much duck they loaded up the duck confit taco with. That was probably my second favorite. Super tender duck with tons of flavor. The vibe here is casual, but it can be a nice, elevated date night spot. I really enjoy that you can order one or two tacos and then order more if you're still hungry. The service between orders is fast enough that you don't have to feel pressured to order them all at the same time. Overall, very impressed with Mexcal, and it will often be one of my recs to others looking for a great bite in the midtown/downtown area.
Fantastic Mexican restaurant near the museum. Menu is mostly tacos in all varieties. The shrimp, mahi mahi, chicken and short rib tacos were delicious! Tacos are very generous. Guacamole and chips were so good and chips are not greasy. Service was outstanding
First stop after the airport in Reno and so glad we gave this place a try. The food was absolutely exceptional! So much flavor in all of the tacos we sampled. Staff were great with recommendations and quick to get the food to the table. Great local vibe - seems to be a local favorite. Would highly recommend!
The tacos were amazing! They were loaded with meat--they definitely weren't skimpy with the portions. Every bite was flavorful, tasty, and juicy. I'll definitely be coming back for more!
Ate here yesterday The Birria tacos where not as good as Jehova Es Mi Pastor in Fernley . However they were good also had the Spicy Lamb Now these tacos were simply amazing and I would Recommend these to anyone that loves spicey food. Hope this helps
Easy to find, parking wasn't bad for downtown area! The service was excellent and prompt. We started with a michelada and a blackberry lemon drop and they were both amazing! The vibe out on the patio was quite but fun and we enjoyed the beautiful weather! The food over all was amazing and we will definitely be back! P.S. get the churros
Happy hour!! Right at the heart of midtown, on virginia street. Great selection of tacos. There's something to everyone's taste here. I had the cauliflower tacos and it was really good. Slightly heat with some cayenne pepper, but really good. The quesobirria is by far my favorite there. The flavor is right, accompanied with a dipping sauce. Really good! And the guava margarita is just a must!! The staff is really friendly and they are always checking on your take to see if you need anything else. They have some space right upfront, or some space in the back, where we usually have a group gathering, with an outdoor vibe
I came here for dinner the other night with a friend because he knows I am an absolute foodie and a sucker for a good birria taco. I was just talking about quesbirria tacos and he challenged me, saying Mexcal had the BEST birria taco in town and... I fear he was right. I ordered one birria taco and one mahi mahi taco and both were so soft and flavorful. I also got a blackberry lemon drop (allergic to tequila unfortunately) but it was nice to have a good vodka cocktail option that wasn't too sweet! To top everything off, staff were incredibly kind and hospitable, overall it was a very enjoyable experience & I will definitely be back!

8/22/26 Again another place I haven't been in 2 yrs wow. Finally got to bring wifey here. We came with some Friends that never been. We Came about 5:30pm before it got real busy. We were greeted immediately and we sat outside back patio. Jose was our server and was excellent and service was fast . We started with a pineapple jalapeño margarita, chips and salsa and guacamole dip , Delicious. I had the Quesabirria Taco & Al Pastor Taco and was so filling and delicious. Full of flavor. Everyone enjoyed their food as well Everyone got a mix of everything like carne asada , spicy lamb and duck Taco's. The food was excellent. Definitely will be back sooner. Enjoy !!!! read more

In town visiting the kiddos and had a craving for Mexican food. Mexcal was the place of choice. It's a quaint little restaurant located in an old tavern building. The employees were extremely friendly and attentive to patron needs. We were seated on the back patio and were immediately asked if we wanted any drinks. We received our adult beverages with chips and guacamole. For what you get, the guac was very tasty with beautiful presentation but pricey at $11. Dinner was yummy and hit the spot for our cravings, It's not authentic flavors but worth a try. The chicken enchilada was plump with meat and the special chorizo steak taco was delightful. A nice place for tacos, tostadas, enchiladas and great camaraderie. read more

Mexcal can get busy, especially on weekends, but they make it easy by letting you join the waitlist from their website before you arrive. They don't take reservations (that I know of) but the virtual waitlist helps a lot with wait times on a busy night! I have been to Mexcal a few times and have always found the service prompt and friendly. On my recent Saturday night visit, I was surprised by how quickly the food came out given how busy it was. I tried the soft shell crab taco, which was a special the day I visited, and it was excellent! It was tasty and a fun, unique menu offering that really stood out. I also tried the octopus taco, which I'd probably skip next time. The octopus tasted a bit fishy and the texture wasn't quite right. To be fair, octopus is hard to cook perfectly, and this one just fell a little short for me. The menu has several great margarita options, and they're nicely balanced in flavor. Overall, I like Mexcal and I'd definitely come back! read more
Four of us went here for dinner on a Saturday night. It was packed. Fortunately we were able to get a table. The ambience is lively and festive. Our server arrived shortly after we were seated and took our drink orders. He seemed to be in a hurry. He returned shortly thereafter to tell us about the specials and take our dinner orders. Every time he returned to our table he seemed rushed. Actually, I felt rushed through our meal from start to finish. I ordered the house specialty taco called the Quesabirria. The menu described it as a crispy, braised short rib taco. When it arrived, it was anything but crisp. While the shell looked like it had been grilled, it was extremely soggy, wet and quite squishy. It did taste good though. I also ordered a tempura shrimp taco, which was one of the nightly specials. It was delicious. The shrimp was crispy on the outside and tender and warm on the inside. And the toppings were tasty. For dessert, I had a piece of Tres Leche cake. It was also delicious. The cake was tasty and moist and the frosting was wonderful. I wish I hadn't felt rushed throughout the entire meal and that the crispy Quesabirria taco was crispy. Even though the shrimp taco was delicious, I'm not sure I would rush back. read more
I came back shortly after my last experience being so gosh dang good! Even on a busy Friday night, my partner and I were still served quickly and enjoyed our avenue tacos. I opted for the quesabirria and duck this time, and they were both crispy, juicy, and full of flavor! We moved to the bar for a nightcap and tried their michelada and Alyssa loca drink. Their house made michelada is the smokiest and saltiest mix I've tried, but also the tastiest!! My only slight annoyance is that they seated us at an added table right next to the door, so it felt a little busy and cold each time the door would open. Otherwise if you arrive earlier or place a reservation, I'm sure your experience would be more warm and cozy! read more
Once again this place has surpassed my expectations took my whole family to experience the joy of this place we ordered so much and loved it all. As always the waiters are so friendly and super attentive. We had a delightful dinner with friends at Mexcal the other night. The service was spot on and the food was delicious. The variety of unique tacos and such was amazing. I wish I had the appetite to sample more of the, but that is for another day. The Quesabirria taco was tasty and juicy with a delicious consommé to dip it in. The Soft Shell crab was served with a pineapple salsa with just a bit too much Jalapeño. But I was able to pick that out. Overall a great evening. The screened patio was still a great place to eat even though it was November. But the heat pumps were set a little too warm. I'm sorry I haven't visited here before, but I will definitely return soon. read more

After all these years of walking by Mexcal, I finally got to try their food and my goodness, it was so delicious! I ordered their hot spicy lamb tostada and shrimp taco. Plus, we got their freshly made guacamole and chips. The spicy lamb tostada was so good and juicy, I wish I had another one. The ingredients were fresh and tasted outstanding! The shrimp taco was perfect and so filling. I'm glad I only got a taco and tostada because they're loaded. Our waiter was on it and so friendly. The place was packed during lunch and dinner seems to be packed too. I can't wait to go back and recommend Mexcal! read more
Let's TACO bout tacos! I haven't really been able to find a good taco spot in Reno, but this spot isn't bad if you're looking for a very casual, but a bit more elevated (compared to a street taco stand or taco truck) experience. Mexcal specializes in Avenue Tacos, which are quite a bit bigger and much more loaded compared to traditional street tacos. They also have chips and salsa (~$4), guacamole (market price, which ended up being $11....), margaritas, and beers to go along with their signature tacos. Overall, my favorite tacos were the quesabirria (which comes with consome) and shrimp tacos, but I would definitely skip the octopus (underseasoned) and al pastor (which consists of giant chunks of pork instead of the thin, deeply flavorful slices I'm used to). Prices are a bit high (especially for the guacamole) at around $6+ a taco, but the quantity of meat and quality of toppings (avocado, pineapple, pickled onions etc) definitely makes up for it. read more
After having some evening cocktails at another place, we came to Mexcal for dinner and it did not disappoint. Right on the intersection of Virginia St and California Ave, Mexcal is a clean and great ambient restaurant for tacos. We were seated immediately and the waiter was awesome. He gave us the specials, took our drinks and gave us some time to think. Came back in good timing and we got our order in. Note, when you order a taco, it's one taco, but it's frickin loaded and priced fairly, so you will want to order two or three most likely which is cool because you can try all their variety. I had the grilled mahi mahi and duck confit and my wife had the duck confit and soft shell crab. Of course we ordered chips, salsa and guacamole and there were three salsas and two sides to the guacamole. We tried the margaritas and also some beers. The food was awesome and service was on point. read more
I WOULD GIVE MY LEFT NUT FOR THE BIRRA. THIS PLACE IS HANDS DOWN BEST PLACE FOR TACOS (Ana's is also fire but it's very much mood driven) I frequent this place more because it's cheaper and just as if not better. Get no more than 3 tacos cuz you'll suffer trying to scarf down a 4th one. The jalapeno pineapple drink is something i can easily get blacked out on because it's so delicious and i'll gargle it down like it's holy water. read more
When in the downtown corridor of Reno, NV and looking for a nice place to enjoy some tacos, MEXCAL is calling your name! Rolled in on a Friday afternoon and ordered all three tacos from the Tacos Dorados menu. One Quesabirria, one spicy lamb, and one chicken. Let me tell you something Yelpstars, if you're a spicehead, the spicy lamb taco will light you up. I really enjoyed the tacos...and for the range of $6.00-$6.75 these tacos are nicely loaded with meats for a fair price. I was very satisfied with my first trip to MEXCAL and I'll for sure be back! 5 stars. read more

Another visit to Mexcal, this time to take my sister, her husband, and my niece while they were visiting. Another knockout visit and they were thoroughly impressed. We sat out on the patio this time and service was just as fast as it is inside. Ambiance inside is great, and while the patio could use a little work, it's still nice. The food, everything was great except for the duck tacos were not the same as they were my last visit at all. I'm gonna go ahead and give Mexcal a pass this time and see how next time goes, but the first time I had them they were totally moist, and had nice seared bits. This time the texture was all very soft, no sear, and a little bit dry. But I'll give them another shot, could just be an off day, there were still tasty. This time we also tried the Mahi Mahi tacos, and they were fantastic, I'll be getting those again. read more

What honestly drew me to this place and one of the main reasons I decided to try it was their octopus appetizer. When we arrived, it was peak hour and we thought we'd have to wait a while for a table, but that wasn't the case at all. The hostess was very efficient and immediately seated us in the back area. The service from the entire staff was excellent. The servers checked in to make sure our food was good, and they were all very kind. I genuinely loved how attentive and welcoming they were. Now, the food -- OMG -- it was absolutely delicious! Of course, I had to order the octopus because I couldn't leave without trying it, and it completely exceeded my expectations. It was super tender, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. We also ordered quesabirria tacos, lengua tacos, al pastor, and one more that I can't quite remember but they all had great flavor and a generous amount of meat. As for the ambiance, the music made the whole experience even better. Thank you so much to the Mexcal team for the amazing service I'm definitely coming back! read more
$5-$6 per a street taco (aka "avenue tacos" per their menu) seemed a bit pricey until I saw the size of these tacos and the amount of meat in each taco-- wow, a good value! Everyone in our group had a different favorite taco. My 7 year old loved the fried Mahi Mahi (no sauce) and the carne asada, my 5 year old liked the cauliflower and the carne asada, my 2 year old liked the lengua taco best. My husband's favorite was the quesabrilla taco. The guacamole was a hit with our kids too (just straightforward guac-- not too much onion, no unexpected seasonings). The chips are deliciously well salted and fresh tasting, not too thin not too thick. And last, but not least, the churros had THE BEST texture I have ever had. The churros were light and crispy with a warm soft center-- oh my, the star by far. And at around $8 if I recall correctly, we thought they were a great value because each of us in our party of 6 was able to enjoy one (the pieces were about 3" long each). Next time my perfect meal would be chips and guac, a carne asada taco, margarita, and the churros for dessert! Enjoy! read more
Came in twice in one week. First we stopped in to get out of the thunderstorm and try out some fun cocktails and the charred octopus appetizer. Drinks were super tasty and the octopus was delicious! We knew we needed too top back in to try the tacos. A couple days later we stopped in for some late night tacos. All 2 we tried were absolutely amazing and piled high with meat, fantastic price and a great way to be able to try as many different tacos as you want. The duck confit is my absolute favorite and I cannot wait to come back and have another! This time we sat outside on the patio, epic ambiance, great music and fun lighting at night. The service here was absolutely amazing both times. Servers are very attentive and the food comes out super quick even if they are busy. Mexcal is by far my favorite taco place in Reno now and we plan to come back soon! read more

Their quesabirria tacos are definitely worth tasting, good consomé, the super spicy lamb tacos are definitely not for the weak and their blackberry lemon drop drink is sweet and delicious. The staff is super friendly and provides great service. Ambiance is casual and friendly. read more

All of the food sound so tasty! What items would be less spicy and low salt content for 1-3 year olds?
The grilled fish taco! anything spicy you can also ask for less spicy unless its braised. carne asada isn't spicy if you're kid is eating steak bits cut small. Grilled fish is perfect though.
Are the times accurate, was there at 11am on Tuesday, May 20 and it was closed?
We apologize, we are not sure what happened that day. But yes we are open Monday - Saturday at 11am.

The patio is available for all service pets. Unfortunately, we do not meet the city requirements to be open for all pets.
Does this place require you to make a reservation?!?
We ate there last night with reservations, but no one ask if we had them and we saw people coming in without them. I would say no they don't. The food is phenomenal!!!
How do you make a reservation? It's 12:30pm on a Thursday but I can't get in touch with anyone. Phone goes straight to voicemail which isn't setup to take messages.
