I hate to give bad restaurant reviews, but this was so bad and disappointing I must. Worst burrito I've ever had (even Taco Bell does a better job and I wont go there again either), worst Mexican restaurant I've ever been to and the worst any restaurant I've been to in over a year. The place is tired (holes in the booths), dirty looking and run down in general. The wait staff was good, but not enough to make up for the dismal food. I should've looked more closely at the reviews ... only 4 in the past year and 2 seem similar to my experience and 2 good reviews (perhaps from friends). I'll start off honestly -- I came across this restaurant by chance after discovering that the two Mexican places I usually visit were closed (it was a Monday). I did notice that the recent reviews weren't very positive, but I decided to give it a try anyway -- and I'm so glad I did. When I arrived, the restaurant was empty, which made me a little hesitant since it was lunchtime. However, the woman at the counter was incredibly kind and attentive. She even asked if I wanted my drink right away or with my meal -- a small but thoughtful gesture. I opted to have it immediately, and I'm glad I did. Their Agua de Horchata was fantastic -- rich, creamy, and authentically flavored. I often judge a Mexican restaurant by its Aguas Frescas, and this one truly impressed me. Honestly, it was almost as good as my mom's, which says a lot. I also appreciated the festive decorations throughout the lobby. It's always nice to see a restaurant put effort into creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Since I had to head back to work, I ordered takeout. When I opened my food, I could tell right away it was going to be good -- the presentation alone looked fresh and well-prepared. I ordered the Sope and Flauta combo, and from the first bite of rice, I was already happy. The flavor and texture were perfect. The combo itself was excellent and very affordable -- I believe the lunch special was under $10, available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It included rice, beans, and a side of sauce for the Sope and Flauta, which I haven't seen offered anywhere else. It's a great touch that shows attention to detail. Overall, this was a pleasant surprise. Despite the empty dining room and a few rough online reviews, my experience was wonderful. Friendly service, authentic flavors, and great value -- I'll definitely be coming back. Food was the polar opposite of our last visit. It is hard to post this, but the tips below are real important to implement. Staff was still awesome. Chicken street tacos were great, the Al Pastor wasn't hitting the high bars this time. Seemed like a different cook kinda thing. 1. Please get your soda machine tuned up, calibrated ASAP - the diet coke was a crime against soda. The service was just okay... The waitress was pleasant and nice but very slow after greeting us. We sat for almost twenty minutes with nothing to drink and a very small portion of chips and salsa. We ordered horchata and were very disappointed. It tasted very watered down. We ordered the pollo mole and the sauce was okay, I have definitely had better. Our other entree order was the sin nombre which was almost inedible. The dish was completely overpowered by lime and I could barely taste the flavors of the fish, cilantro or any other spice. Oh man! So let's talk about Lupitas. Their food was awful. Carne asada tasted like it was reheated from being cooked the night before on an old crusty dirty grill. The taco was birria. It was loaded but zero flavor. They added onion cilantro and a watered down salsa. Still no flavor. The birria burrito was plated with beans and rice BUT WHY when the burrito already had beans and rice and mozzarella cheese. Again no flavor, the rice was ok. The service was bad. I only got 1 glass of water. No refill. She didn't check on us to make sure our food was ok. Nothing. To add to this horror it stank so bad in there. Stinky!!! Thanks. Let's just say, the canned beer was good. Can't go wrong with canned beer, right? As far as the food goes, it could have been loads better. We've come here more than a few times and the service, cleanliness and food just keeps getting worse. This time, we ordered a campechana. No flavor. We also ordered the shrimp pozole. No flavor. The oysters were far from fresh and the side of al pastor tacos tasted like boiled meat tossed in sauce too late for it to hold on to any flavor. This was my first time here (on a Saturday night) and mostly likely my last. The food was very average. The atmosphere was pretty undesirable (the customers influenced this heavily), but the prices were very reasonable. When the chips and salsa we're brought to our table I immediately knew I would not be a fan of their salsa...and I was right. The salsa (chile verde) brought with our food was also subpar. For me, salsa is usually a make or break with Mexican food because I eat it with every bit which means it has to be as good or better than the food. Can we all say one thing "El Presidente" these tacos are to die for. An here lupita's they are doing things well. These are hand made tortillas with Steak stripes, lettuce an some housemade taco sauce. They are on the Ala Carte menu. I only have ordered this and will continue to only order these. I like the shrimp tacos here, they're pretty spicy, but they're pretty good. I've also tried their shrimp dishes and they are tasty. Their food is a bit pricy, and as most of the other reviews have noted, the wait time is pretty long. You get seated right away, but it does take a long time to get your food. The waitresses are nice, and attentive. I come in here whenever I get a shrimp taco craving and other places aren't within reach, but I do prefer other places for shrimp tacos. read more

I loved Lupita's when it opened. in fact, i ate there so many times the owner asked me about it. The quality dropped, though. I've held off giving it a so-so review, because I really want them to succeed. It's been years since i had a good meal there. So just three stars from me. I got a margarita, a taco and a beef burrito. Because I got the margarita they gave me a free ceviche tosada and it was nice. The margarita was bad. Tasted watery. Not much flavor. Small rice and bean portion that was cold, did not even melt the cheese on top. Bar slash restraunt so be prepared for a lively crowd on a friday night. Large menu with many choices. Lupitas is located on the corner of McCarran Blvd and prater way, in the same strip mall as big lots. When you walk in the front door and almost all the patrons are speaking Spanish, and parts of the menu are in Spanish, that is a good thing. We arrived about 10:45 and were seated right away. There is a separate bar area, and a rowdy crowd was watching soccer. I ordered two shrimp Enchiladas, and one pork tamale. I did not order the combo, just ala carte. Like I said earlier, the food was fantastic. It was incredibly fresh and full of flavor. The presentation was incredible to. Since I ordered ala carte it was just the Enchiladas. The Enchiladas had chicken inside and on top was a green sauce, onion, slaw, and tomato. Drizzled on top of the tomato was sour cream. The pork tamale was to die for. I am married to a Mexican, and Deb always tells me how her grandmother would make tamales, very little mass, lots of meal. The tamale was delicious. Most definitely will be back. I am pretty disappointed. I ordered a chili relleno and queso fundido through door dash and the menu options were 2 choices on the queso fundido. Beans or sliced jalapeños. I selected the jalapeños because I can not eat beans and paid an extra 2.00 to add chicken to it. . When my order arrived, the queso was filled my chicken and with both beans and jalapeños. After the first bite and noticing the beans through out the entire thing, I wasn't able to eat any more of it and had to throw it away. It was a waste of $8.50 and i'm pretty upset about it. If they don't advertise something as simple as melted cheese dip correctly then I'm not sure I can trust anything else they have on their menu either. read more

We will most likely not be back. We came because my husband loves fresh made tortillas, well they don't make them anymore. When I ordered I had to ask for three different things since they were out of what I asked for. This was at 10:30 am so you would think they would be ready for the day. Upon arriving in Reno, the first task I undertook was to begin interviewing the hotel employees about their favorite restaurants. I was looking for good Mexican because of the rather sizeable Hispanic population in the area. Most recommendations named Bertha Miranda's....so I looked on Yelp and found mostly favorable reviews except for a few that sounded like a negative review that I would give. Going on my gourmand instincts, I kept looking around and found this solitary review of a place they thought better than Bertha's. I took the bait. At first, this is a little hard to find if you are not a local. It is at the end of a rather long strip mall (1/4 mile) and faces a corner street, so Lupita's has an address but the store faces the other corner street. At the time I went in (7 pm ish) the restaurant was half full with local patrons, most all of them speaking Spanish. GOOD SIGN Walking in reminded me of the many local, one store, one owner Mexican restaurants in East LA . The decor is festive and is in a perpetual Cinco de Mayo state of readiness. Clearly they are not catering to the tourists, but you can feel the culture deeply embedded in the interior decorations. Although most would immediately think the objects hanging on the walls and from the ceilings gave it a cluttered look, upon closer inspection, it became obvious every item had a particular meaning to owner. I love just going into places like this. So how was the food? 1. Pork tamale: For $2 a la carte, a smallish tamale the size of two king sized Snickers bars was actually very tasty. Very modest amount of meat however. I would have preferred to have a $4 tamale with more meat in it. Overall, still very tasty. 4 stars given the price, 2, Pork taco: Served just like the vendors in the streets of Mexico. Two small tortillas (4'"in diameter) covered completely with a mound of cubed, seasoned, and skillet fried pork with onions and cilantro. Sauce on the side. This was just great and it was only $1 per taco. 5 stars. 3. Sin Nobre (assorted cerviche seafood). I wanted something different than the standard, taco, enchilada, rice, beans, fajitas fare....so scanning the menu I noticed cerviche. For those not familar with it, it is raw seafood marinated at least overnight in lime juice and spices. The citric acids literally cook the seafood when it sits for long periods of time. The translucence of seafood turn an opaque white when it is "cooked." In this version they had octopus, oysters, mullosks, shrimp, crab, some kind of white fish, squid. The portion was generous and the result was fabulous. At $13, this was a real bargain. An upscale DC restaurant could easily charge $30-$50 for an entree like this. 5 stars for this dish. If you are ever in Reno and want to have Mexican food, take the time to drive 10 minutes east to Sparks and give Lupitas a try. You will not be disappointed. First and last time here! Unfortunately our food was extremely salty! I ordered a ceviche de camaron tostada, my husband ordered 2 ceviche pescado tostadas and lastly my son had a carne asada burrito. I'll admit my ceviche de camaron was the only dish with a decent flavor, However my poor child didn't say anything about his burrito til he was half way done. He described it as sour , so I got concern and tasted the meat! WOW it was extremely salty! I can't believe he even ate half of the burrito like that! My husband also complained about his food being salty. After asking for the check I decided to mention to our waitress that our food was extremely salty. She thanked us for the feedback but stated she couldn't do anything regarding our check. After reading all of the shining reviews for Lupita's, I was excited to try it out. For me and my friends, it was just adequate. My shrimp a la diabla was fine. The sauce was reminiscent of BBQ sauce almost and it tasted like it was made with condensed OJ. It was a nice flavor, just threw me off a bit. The carne asada was overcooked and far too gristley. I realize that it isnt supposed to be a fine piece of meat, but Ive had better versions almost everywhere else. The service was also adequate but all in all a very forgettable experience and not one worth driving across town for, for sure. read more

Pretty good Mexican food at good prices. They also let me order chilaquiles off the menu and I'm glad I did as they were pretty good. My lime margarita had too much ice. It was hard to drink.
