I have been searching for a new Mexican / Taco spot for quite some time ever since our previous restaurant changed their name and lowered their quality. My wife and I just want good quality and value with some sincere & kind service; that's all. Nothing fancy and special treatment necessary, just good old fashioned hospitality and good food. We believe we have found it this Sunday afternoon! We found them on the reviews and it looked promising so we decided to give them a try. The moment we walked in, we could tell Taco El Patron was different. The restaurant was bright, clean and very inviting with their tastefully decorated walls to their comfortable seating & table arrangement. We were greeted by a very pleasant waitress named Ashley and she and Veronica made us feel at home from the time we let them know it was our first visit to the time we left feeling high satisfied by the awesome food and first-class service. The menu was simple but gave diners many different ways to customize their food - that was a big deal to us. The chips and chicharron were delightful with their amazing bottles of superb salsas! My wife went with the asada (steak) and I couldn't decide so I asked Ashley to bring me ALL six of the selections from the special tacos section and that's what she did with a giggle saying no one has ordered all them, so they even took a photo of that massive plate of tacos and all the tasty sides! I felt like I hit the taco lottery when the platter came out and because the service was just as amazing and outstanding as the food. I had a wonderful time trying each one of the expertly crafted tacos and was so impressed with each and every bite. The prices are fair & reasonable and that's honestly a bonus since it's hard to find value for your hard earned money these days. My wife and I felt like our money was well spent and our patronage was very much appreciated. With that being said, you and your family should not waste anymore time with other trendy restaurants (you know who they are) and come to Tacos El Patron where you will hit the taco lottery like I did with amazing generous homemade style food served by a staff that treats you like family. Not as good as it used to be. Maybe today was a bad day for them but tonight was a miss. The waitress was not the best. I could see she was trying out best but she got our order wrong. I ordered the guac and pork belly with her and she walked away. I was trying to order my drinks but she moved so fast. I ordered one thing and she walked away. I had to go up to the bar to grab napkins and ask her for the amazing hot sauces that usually comes in the bottle. My husband ordered no onions and cilantro and got cilantro on everything. My husband ordered Al pastor and got lengua. The pastor lacked flavor. The best thing was the tripa. Although a bit greasy, it was tasty. The carnitas were good. What I had: Street taco (pollo) 3/5 Good flavor but the chicken was tough and dry. There was a really good amount of chicken in that taco though. Fish taco 5/5 great flavor. My waiter warned me that the chipotle sauce was spicy. I didn't think it was spicy at all, so I added the habanero salsa to it and now I'm suffering (in the way I wanted to lol). The only downside I found was the logistics behind eating this thing. It's super tall, the fish is one big piece. So anyway I tried to eat it, it started falling apart and I just felt like I was getting chipotle sauce all over my face. If I was in a date, I wouldn't get this. Horchata 4/5: you can tell it's fresh! Not the type that's a mix. I just didn't like the chunks of cinnamon stick that I would get occasionally. We've been here twice so far. In our first visit, we tried the tacos. The birria taco was really good. It was stewed 'birria' meat wrapped around a crunchy shell. During our visit, we saw another table eating something that looked like a quesadilla, but much bigger - like the size of a bicycle wheel. It turned out to be the 'Pizza Birria'. We had to try that. And so we did - during our second trip, we had the Pizza Birria, along with something else that looked interesting - the Birria Ramen. The Pizza Birria was cheesy and delicious. It was also huge, easily feeding a party of 4. We hardly had any room left for the ramen. The ramen was good as well - it was a large bowl of noodles soaked with birria stew. Between the two, we liked the Pizza better. Value was great - less than $25 for this huge pizza. The staff was very friendly, and the restaurant was really cozy. Went for dinner on a Thursday and absolutely fell in love. I got the taco patron, the norteno taco, and the vampiro taco (which is a tostada) and my friend got the birria taco, the taco patron and the al pastor taco. Everything was absolutely delicious and the portions were extremely generous. The taco patron is STUFFED with shrimp and the melted cheese inside the corn tortilla is perfectly melted and crispy on the outer edges of the tortilla. The shrimp was well seasoned and juicy. (8/10) The norteno taco was also delicious with the same crispy cheese but all over the tortilla this time. It was huge and the beef was tender and well marinated. I also enjoyed the cabbage and onions for a touch of freshness (8.5/10) The vampiro taco was my personal favorite with the juiciest meat and a big dollop of guac on top. The tostada was perfectly crunchy and a great item to try if you are craving something different than the traditional taco. (9/10) The tacos came with pico de gallo, guac, radish, grilled cactus, and charro beans without and additional charge. The prices are very reasonable and the service was quick and friendly. This was a colorful restaurant featuring many pictures of Frida Kahlo inside. We were the only customers there when we arrived on a Wednesday evening, but by the time we left, the restaurant was pretty full. We got started off with some complimentary chips and salsa before ordering. We ordered: - Tacos: Birria (extra $1 for cheese), pescado, asada, pastor, lengua - Aguas frescas: Pineapple, horchata You get a free side of beans, radishes, grilled onions, or cactus if you order 2 tacos. For the regular tacos, I thought they were just ok. But I loved the quesabirria tacos! These were probably my favorite that I've tried in Houston so far. The tacos were super crispy, and remained crispy throughout the entire meal. The meat was so juicy and tender, and they were very generous with the portions. They also brought out 4 different sauces ranging from very mild to spicy habanero. I neeeed my tacos to be spicy, so I was very happy that the habanero sauce was actually spicy! I placed my order online for pickup on my way home. This is my second time eating their food and I am a huge fan. First off, their portion sizes are huge. I ordered and my food was ready in 35 minutes. I walked in and they had my food all packed and ready to go. They are always so nice. Everything we ordered was very good. We did not agree on el Patron, I liked it more than he did, but that's life. Their guacamole was exceptional and I could absolutely eat that by the bucketful, kid you not. Overall, he found things just a bit too spicy for his palate although he did love drinking from the large jar servings of Horchata. The chili Relleno and shrimp enchilada was OK, not my favorite. For dessert we tried the coffee flan which has a cake-like bottom, and the churros plate with ice-cream and dipping sauces. Our waitress was attentive. Came here with a couple people for lunch while out and about. When we walked in the place was prety dead but my friend vouched for the place so we took a seat. Service was kind of slow, a couple people were working but seemed to be busy with other tasks but they brought out chips and salsa and took our orders. I got an agua de pepino and four tacos, with lengua and chicken. Their agua was good but pretty sweet, and the lengua tacos were okay but the texture was just a little chewy. This place hits all the marks. The gentleman that served us was super friendly and helpful. He brought us chips and all of their sauces and answered our questions about the menu. I started with a topo-Chico drink and he asked me if I wanted it with salt and lime, which doesn't happen very often, so that was a good start. We got 2 quesobirria tacos, one vampiro with pastor meat, one cabeza and one asada taco. When asked if we wanted their freebie sides (beans, nopales, onions and radish) we had to oblige. All of their tacos are STACKED; two or three and you're full. The birria is delicious and loaded with cheese wrapped in crunchy tortilla and the consome is delicious and so savory. My next favorite was the Vampiro tostada with pastor; topped with generous mashed avocado, atop a tender marinated pork over a cheesy and crispy tostada. The cabeza and asada tacos were good also but the stars of the show were definitely the birria and the vampiro tostada. We ended with ice cream churro which was delicious as well. The consome that comes with it on the side is pretty decent. 3 out of a 5 Norteño Taco- NOPE.. all the way NOPE. It was soggy, the Asada had no flavor and the cheese was burnt a little too much making the whole taco taste burnt with every bite. 1 out of 5. Mango margarita on the rocks-NOT worth it. $12.50 each- made a little strong with cheap tequila and muddled mango pieces but not good. 2 out of 5 For $70 for 2 people before tip I could have gone to Ambriza. Having to drop a star or 2 here because it's clear that in flavor and texture that they have changed the type of meat they once used for the beef fajitas. I know a lot of businesses do this in order to save money but they sacrifice the quality of the meat and it does indeed affect the flavor. This is still a great spot with yummy Rita's. This place is slept on and I'm surprised that not many people know about Tacos El Patron. I came here twice this week because I had to show more of my friends this spot. The inside is cozy and has many paintings/decorations of Frida Kahlo. There's a good amount of space inside and my friend and I were seated right away. The water came in cute mason jars and the complimentary chips and salsa were great. As for the sauces, there were 4 bottles with different flavors- be careful of one of them because there is a habanero sauce which is super spicy! I ordered the Birria Taco, Asada, and Lengua while my friend got the Taco de Pescado (Battered fish), Birria, and Carnita. When you order 2 or more tacos, you can get free sides which include Nopales (Cactus), Ceballa Asada (Griled Onion), Rabanos (radishes), and frijoles (beans). Everything tasted amazing but the star of the show was the Birria Taco. Wow, even without the broth on the side, this taco is so juicy and this place is generous with the amount of beef they put inside. The shell is crispy and the flavor is impeccable. And when dipping the Birria Taco in the broth, words can't express how delicious every bite was. Aside from the incredible food and cozy interior, the staff members were so kind. They frequently checked up on my friends and I to make sure our experience here was good and gave good recommendations for food. Everything could be improved or worked on at this "restaurant". Mind you the name of this place is in Spanish, yet the music being played was white country music. Our waitress? Only spoke English and corrected me when I asked for a "limon" Jarrito, said "lime"? I ordered birria fries, expecting them to be home cooked and served with consome on top of the fries. I came here a few months ago and thought the food and portion size was great! Then I returned for the second time and I feel like there was something lacking. Maybe it was the portion size or the meat quality, which is a shame. But regardless, the food and service is decent enough to return. Especially the beverages! I love the variety of salsas they provide and the server always inform us what is the hottest to least hot. I've tried the quesa birria tacos which I enjoyed. Good amount of crunch on the outside, flavorful, and nice consome. I also got to try the street tacos with lengua. I thought this was just ok. I visited here since it's one of the highest rated taco restaurants in the area. The menu is like a taqueria with a variety of meats for tacos, but they have a full bar, which is pretty rare. They have 6 different Agua Fresca flavors currently, I came for the watermelon. There is a large cocktail menu, plus 9 types of specialty margaritas on the other side of the menu on the table. If you like birria, not only do they have tacos, but also birria pizza, birria ramen, and birria fries. If you are a flavored margarita person, you have hit the jackpot, as they have 18 flavors. Not on the regular menu, they also serve grilled cheese and mac and cheese. I ordered one birria taco with cheese, one head taco, and chose the beans and grilled onions as my free sides. I also ordered an egg taco and a traditional flan for dessert. The head taco was pretty good and served as a street taco with corn tortilla. It's pretty similar to a barbacoa taco. The birrria taco is about twice the size and comes with a cup of consome. This was really delicious.
