Tacos

Not sure about some of the other reviews, but the "street tacos" here are amazing!! I've had the beef, pork, and chicken. All are really good, but the pork "pastor" is spectacular. As far as tacos go, this place is a hidden gem.

Breakfast burrito with fries.

Had a great lunch. Ordered the chicken salsa verde enchiladas, an horchata and some queso. Everything was good. The queso was a bit runny for my liking but had good flavor. The enchiladas were good as well. Good balance of flavor. Service was good, polite and courteous. The waiter changed the channel to the tv at my request to watch the Coogs play. Wonderful lunch.

Enchiladas Verdes

My mom has been here several times and finally took me with her today. I see why she's been craving it! I ordered the green enchiladas, and they were outstanding. The chicken and beef fillings were tender and full of flavor, and the tangy sauce was exactly what I wanted. Rice was fluffy and the refried beans were perfect as well. Everything looked extremely fresh. The restaurant itself is spacious and very very clean. The servers were friendly and attentive. We'll be bringing the rest of our family back for more - I'm especially excited to return and try some of the breakfast items!

Mexican Sugar Houston Montrose - Brunch tacos

Mexican Sugar Houston Montrose

The world is full of Mexican restaurants…read more Most are some version of Tex-Mex in a family-friendly, relatively similar environment. Nothing wrong with that. Mexican Sugar breaks that mold completely. This is the most legit, wonderful, bougie, over-the-top Mexican restaurant I have ever been to, and I mean that as the highest compliment possible. This was my second trip to Mexican Sugar. The first was in Grapevine. After this visit to the Montrose location, I have officially decided that when I am in Texas, I will seek these places out. They are that good. First, dress up. I doubt there is an actual dress code, but this is not the place where I am showing up looking like I just finished mowing the yard. Come here to be seen. Come here to show out a little. The place is beautiful and has that kind of vibe. Second, the drinks. Hell yes. Fancy, creative, excellent, and impressive enough for even the person who has seen every ridiculous cocktail presentation imaginable. And then there is the food. My God, the food. The salsa and queso are legit AF. The street corn is heaven in a bowl. Get several orders. I am serious. One is not enough. The carne asada was amazing. Honestly, I could keep going, but at some point this review is just going to become me yelling about how much I love Mexican Sugar. I LOVE MEXICAN SUGAR. OK, YOU GET THE IDEA. WHY AM I YELLING? BACK TO THE REVIEW.... Service was excellent too. The place is huge and was absolutely packed, but our server stayed attentive and the food came out surprisingly quickly. Make a reservation. Park in the nearby garage. Dress nice. Order the drinks. Get the street corn. Then get more street corn. Who is ready for another trip to Houston? I'll book the reservation at Mexican Sugar.

We came during Houston Restaurant Weeks and took advantage of their dinner offer…read more I'll start off by saying it was well worth the price for everything we got! We weren't of fan of everything we ordered but we'd still come back again to try other things on the menu. The margarita was tasty- not too sweet, refreshing and it packed a punch without it tasting like straight up liquor. My salmon was delicious and cooked perfectly. I loved the bed of roasted veggies however, it was a smaller portion than I would've liked. My friend didn't like her enchiladas, the beef was more shredded like for a guisado instead of the steak fajita it said it was. Flavor wasn't really there. The chocolate cake was good but not the best I ever had. The tres leches was average. The space was cute, parking is best done in the garage (they do validate a percentage of the cost which came out to $5 bucks for me). Our server was great, fast and never made us feel rushed. Overall I would come back again to try something else- and get that margarita again!

The food is excellent, and honestly, everything is great! If you're in the area, you should definitely stop by. The photos look great, but experiencing it for yourself is even better. Honestly I am fairly disappointed in this place as I had been anticipating it for the longest time…read more I was able to snag reservations about 1 month in advance for a Saturday dinner. The restaurant is located in a quiet area in West University with a good amount of street parking. The restaurant itself is decorated with a lot of character and personality and they have seating inside and outside on their covered patio. Don't get me wrong, the service here is amazing. The servers are very attentive, and I appreciate the chefs coming out to explain their dish. However, the dishes themselves were basic and lacked specialty. My boyfriend and I got the Chef's Tasting Menu. I got the drink pairing. As a Chef's tasting menu, I would expect the restaurants' most precious meals. The short rib was dry and the rest of the other dishes were unmemorable. The only dish that truly caught my eye was their Tres Leches, but this was given on the house as it was our anniversary. The drink pairing I got was well worth and all of the drinks were flavorful and paired well. Overall, I'd hope that their chef's tasting menu would improve as they rotate their dishes. I would try to come back to give it another chance.

Taco Tuesday at Don Leti's and BABYYYYY, they understood the assignment!…read more Being from LA, we're a little picky when it comes to Mexican food. We know good Mexican food, so our expectations were definitely high! We arrived and had about a 10-minute wait for a table, which wasn't bad at all. They also offer complimentary valet parking (tips suggested), which is always a nice little perk! Our waiter, Alonzo, was great! Friendly, attentive, and made sure we were taken care of the entire time. Now let's get into these drinks! We ordered the Henny Margaritas, and when I tell you those drinks were DRINKING! By the time I finished mine, I was only operating with ONE eye! They were not playing around with the Hennessy! We started with the Surf & Turf Queso, and OMG, it was soooo good! It came with both tortillas and chips, but personally, I preferred the tortillas. Something about scooping up that cheesy goodness with a warm tortilla just hit different! For my entree, I ordered the Combination Plate because I'm the type of girl who wants a little bit of EVERYTHING! I chose the Al Pastor Taco, Chicken Enchiladas, and Carne Asada Quesadilla. My husband went with the Birria Sampler Platter. Let me tell you, EVERYTHING was delicious! The portions were HUGE! We honestly could've ordered one plate and shared it because it was that much food. Needless to say, we left with leftovers! Between the delicious food, strong margaritas, generous portions, and great service from Alonzo, Don Leti's definitely earned our approval! And coming from two LA folks who take their Mexican food seriously, that's saying something! Would we come back? ABSOLUTELY! But next time, we might share a plate... although knowing us, we'll probably still order everything!

I ordered a surf and turf burrito, and for 25$ I expected a better tasting burrito…read more I dont know if that's how the burrito is supposed to come but mine only included meat cheese and rice. I had the pick-two lunch deal and opted for a crispy beef taco and cheese enchilada. All pick-two lunch deals are served with rice, refried beans, and guacamole salad. We also split an order of the chile con queso. First, before you even order, they drop off salsa and a basket of chips, which was great. We did end up finishing the entire basket with the chile con queso that we ordered. The chile con queso was so good, exactly what I wanted - and also exactly what I want whenever I think of queso. Excellent. The crispy taco was really, really good. Think childhood taco Tuesdays, but done better. The meat was so flavorful and my taco was huge. My friend's chicken flautas were good and my husband's chicken verde enchilada was also really good. Excellent flavors.
