The enchiladas are perfectly seasoned and the white cheese queso will swear you off melted velveeta with salsa forever. Pay attention where you sit. The chips and salsa you get here with your meal when you dine in are great, as are all the Tacos (lengua being my fav) and they have the best deal for elote en vaso that I've seen in Topeka. Great food! This is my Favorite Mexican food spot in Topeka, hands down!. They are cheap too!

It may be quite authentic, and was quite busy even at 2 pm. My chili rellenos were the worst I've ever had, and I've enjoyed many over the years. These were flat as a pancake, very brown, and so I picked all the greasy, sweetish coating off and enjoyed the poblanos and melted cheese. On the menu they were priced $3.99 but she charged $4.99 saying they had a recent price increase! Mi espouso had the tacos al pastor and the meat was tender and flavorful on double corn tortillas, served with a whole grilled jalepeno and sauted onions. Very nice presentation, also greasy, but delicious. His plate was on special $5.99, a very good price. But our bill came to $23 after tip, adding extra for a sour cream and a guac, and a coke. The guacamole was good. Service was OK. Bathroom needed soap to wash the greasy fingers and paper towels would be nice, but they seemed short-handed perhaps. read more

This little spot right off of 70 (take the California St exit) may not look like much from the outside, but it's a fantastic little spot. Great food and ambiance, and the service is super friendly and helpful. I'd definitely recommend it, and plan on heading back here soon. read more

The soft tacos are the best in town. Beef or Pork - there is just no flavor like them anywhere else around here. I'd venture to say the corn tortilla shells are made fresh daily. The meat is tender and with a squirt of lime juice on top - it's a sample of heaven. This joint gets my vote for BEST Mexican food in Topeka hands-down. Nobody else even comes close. The service is always friendly and the food is served at a pace where you know they're back there preparing it for you - not heating up a premade plate and bringing to you table - like so many other restaurants in town do. As a pure-white-chick I find the decor a bit overboard - blaring TVs with "Mexican Soap Operas" and brightly hand-painted walls paired with plastic table covers with chili peppers printed all over them... but the really food is good and I really don't care. Take it to go if you wish - they'll package it right up for you. Lastly, don't let the fact that these are real Mexican women who speak Spanish fluently (and probably as a first language) scare you off. Or that there's a bunch of stuff all over the place you can't read - they speak English and are very happy to help you out. read more

Being born half Mexican and half German produced a few more issues than I was perhaps created to handle. Growing up I (almost) always went to Mexico for Xmas vacation, whether I wanted to go or not. The benefits were exposure to the culture and the foods. I may look like your everyday above average ruggedly handsome Midwesterner, but I know "real" Mexican food from yards away. With that said this place is the real deal. If I close my eyes I could easily imagine I'm eating lunch in Monterrey, except for the American extras, cheese, chips, wacky Spanish TV and etc. Anyone into Mexican food I would suggest this place first to form a baseline for everything else. I love this place. Back in the 90s when I was going to school in Topeka, it was called Tacos El Sol - guess owners have changed but the menu seems exactly the same. I try to stop here whenever I have to be in Topeka once or twice a year. The veggie burrito is great, full of cabbage and deliciousness. I dunno if they are still open in the early morning, but I used to stop here at 7 AM for a veggie burrito to go, it made me a lot happier about going to class. I really like the menudo also. I think it's great that it's a bus stop - it's almost like a port! Stop here on the way to Mexico City, haha. read more

This place is pretty great. It's about as authentic of Mexican food as I have seen in Topeka thus far where basically you get a mess of stuff on your plate. I've only eaten here a couple times. Personally, I prefer less authentic and more separated, dry and cheesy Mexican food, if that makes sense. However, the food is really good, including the unlimited chips and salsa. I seem to remember the tomatoes being a little overpowering in the salsa (I hate tomatoes), but it was still good and made me think it was fresh. The table service wasn't great as I had to go to the counter to get my soda refilled, and we had to flag the lady down to get the chips and salsa refilled, but no biggie. The place looks like that is to be expected as the ladies tend to stay behind the counter. I think Carol G. has extra sensitive hearing. This is the second review she's made about a loud environment that to me was non-existent. I don't remember blaring TVs (although I do remember a TV in the corner that was on), and my uncle and I had a normal conversation without raising our voices at all. Hands down the best Authentic Mexican food in the MidWest. That's right this place is that good, originally from Southern CA and finding good quality Mexican food has been nearly impossible. Which is ironic the street name is California, anyways back to the most important part..... The food is worth driving from Manhattan to Topeka every day, twice a day. The price should be double and my hats off to the cook. As you can tell the price is cheap, but the food is better then every fine restaurant in Kansas. Yes, the exterior look of the place can use some TLC and fresh paint job, but who cares I'm here to eat great food not to live there. We went to a near by Mexican restaurant with tons of reviews but looking at the menu, tasting burn chips an flavorless salsa , we ran out to this Gem in the rough. This is the best dive Mexican joint I have eaten at since I was in prison! The Carnitas dinner is one of the best plates of food I have ever eaten. The salsa is authentic and divine. We stopped here on our way back from a trip. We got there at 4:25 and they closed at 5pm. I've been a waitress and thought it was okay for us to order. Both owner and waitress were extremely rude. While standing there tapping her foot waving her order paper, We ordered our food and they promptly told us we close at 5. While eating (it was tasty) I watch the waitress mop the bathroom and front, then go straight to warming plates to deliver food. Disgusting!! Guess that's the extra flavor I was tasting. Certainly not fancy, but the restaurant has always been clean and the staff has always been friendly.
