    Blueberry muffin

Service was good, small seating area, but still nice. Ordered a dirty chai latte and it was very watery and no cream taste to it. Just tasted like a cup of coffee. But the quiche was good, sandwich was probably better than the quiche. The blueberry muffin was very moist!

    Yummy lattes!

Cozy coffee shop that also offers tasty food. Menus are posted on happy chalkboards and include seasonal beverages. The bacon quiche was much better than anything my hotel tried to serve me, and the vanilla lavender "spring fling" latte was refreshing on a dreary day. I'm adding this to my Topeka favorites list, and will be back next time I'm in town!

What a cozy, cute place to get in from the heat, read, and journal. Loved the monster cookie bar and drink. They recommended it and I loved it. It had a calm vibe which I enjoyed. I'll definitely stop here again.

Stopped in for coffee and a bite to eat. What a darling little coffee shop. The atmosphere is relaxing, aesthetically pleasing and inviting. I ordered a dirty chia latte with coconut milk. I was thrilled when they said they use Oregon Chai - which in my opinion is the best chai. The spice is not overpowering nor watered down. Many places don't offer coconut milk so seeing that on the menu was pleasing. I ordered a breakfast sandwich which consisted of turkey, egg, cheddar cheese and spinach. They offered many options to build your own. It was fresh, warm and hit the spot. My daughter ordered a wildberry smoothie. She described it as creamy but not milky at all. She said it was good, not to sweet and blended to perfection. She also ordered a banana nut muffin. It was what you would expect from Costco or Sams club. Nothing special but they warmed it will - not to hot not to cold. The muffin was moist and fresh.

Stopped at the Steam Engine for the first time this morning. Coffee was great and the "build it yourself" Breakfast Sandwich was delish. I'll be back! Looks like they have some nice lunch items as well , FYI.

Woke up this morning with a hunger for not Starbucks coffee. With a simple Yelp search my family and I find ourselves heading to The Steam Engine. It is the perfect place for coffee or a spot of tea. The kids got cinnamon rolls that rivaled grandma's. I mean each bite was heaven! They had homemade pop tarts and an assortment of breakfast sandwiches. A superb local coffee spot with a chill vibe and great cafe food.

I tried the cold brew & build your own breakfast sandwich. It was good! Good taste & well crafted & good value for the money.

Really great coffee and the quiche is homemade. Best quiche I've had. I still think about this quiche. Need to go back for more.

The one question I have is why is it called The Wheel Barrel? I know a wheelbarrow, a wheel of cheese, a wine barrel, but I haven't figured out the name yet. If I make it back, maybe I can ask. The Wheel Barrel serves grill cheese/sandwiches and soup. I appreciate the concept and in this situation keeping it rather simple yet with some good selection for sandwiches and soup. I got a special wild rice and chicken soup with a half Baja turkey sandwich. It's a half and half for $12. I thought both tasted very good. I didn't eat quite all of it but I'd say it is a normal meal. Not a huge serving. I think most people would eat this in one meal. I think if I'm back in Topeka, I'll have to go back and do the traditional grilled cheese and tomato bisque! It was a busy lunch time meal. A nice size crowd was there. Service was still pretty quick. They have a rustic decor which is sort of like a wheelbarrow and a barrel. It's on a block that seems to be trying to add some art and culture to Topeka and I appreciate that a lot! If I'm back over that way, I'll stop back in and if definitely recommend it in Topeka.

My husband asked about a chicken friend steak, so I Yelp'd and low-and-behold, Cook's is really close to where we were. I was raised in a small midwestern town, and this, folks, is a quintessential midwestern diner! I didn't snap a pic of the menu, but ordering is done at the register and all the prices are very reasonable. I ordered a coffee & western omelette, which came with a side of hash-browns and biscuit. The coffee, very standard diner percolator brewed stuff, was fresh and the perfect consistency. The food was served quickly by a cheerful waitress who came by a few times to continue to check on us. My husband was very pleased with his chicken fried steak, hash-browns, eggs and toast. My breakfast was well-portioned; not a huge plate but definitely ample, fresh and tasty! The best part of the experience for me what the cleanliness of the dining room. Not fancy- utilitarian carpet, linoleum table tops- but so clean, fresh and well-tended. It seemed busy for a Thursday morning; more than half the dining room was occupied, and the low storefront of the building is easy to miss, but I was confident these customers were regulars. We don't live in Topeka, but this is now my fav restaurant there, so I plan to return!
