Food: I did not order anything to eat but oh my my their options looked absolutely delicious! I am trying to avoid sugar so the pastries are extremely tempting. Coffee is always hot especially their pour over which is my favorite thing to order. Service with a smile plus a greeting is what you will receive here. For those who do not adventure deep into this area this hidden gem is a must to visit. Cozy coffee shop that also offers tasty food. Menus are posted on happy chalkboards and include seasonal beverages. The bacon quiche was much better than anything my hotel tried to serve me, and the vanilla lavender "spring fling" latte was refreshing on a dreary day. Awesome coffee shop in Topeka. My kid and I each had a strawberry and banana smoothie. Too hard-working employees were making our smoothies and they did a great job. A nice coffee place that serves PT's Coffee beans, a local roaster (Kansas). I tried the Bourbon Pecan flavor and it was yummy! Other coffee flavors with hints of citrus or fruit also available. l also got their cherry and apricot scone - a unique pairing I haven't come across yet in my travels. It was also tasty. Stopped in for coffee and a bite to eat. What a darling little coffee shop. The atmosphere is relaxing, aesthetically pleasing and inviting. I ordered a dirty chia latte with coconut milk. I was thrilled when they said they use Oregon Chai - which in my opinion is the best chai. The spice is not overpowering nor watered down. Many places don't offer coconut milk so seeing that on the menu was pleasing. I ordered a breakfast sandwich which consisted of turkey, egg, cheddar cheese and spinach. They offered many options to build your own. It was fresh, warm and hit the spot. My daughter ordered a wildberry smoothie. She described it as creamy but not milky at all. She said it was good, not to sweet and blended to perfection. She also ordered a banana nut muffin. It was what you would expect from Costco or Sams club. One of the few coffee shops in the area. Serves PTs (local roaster) and offers large selection of flavored syrups/sauces (torani) and alternative milks. Friendly staff and great prices but my latte had obvious coffee grounds in it and tasted slightly over extracted. Would probably just go down the street to PTs if I had the choice. read more

Just another place with with such a good reviews, but it's not that good , coffee with weird milk options that at the end what you get it's a coffee that taste just like the milk they put on it except the taste of real coffee. The atmosphere of steam engine is very nice and homey. The mocha latte I get is pretty ok. Not my favorite mostly because the coffee blend is far to bitter and stark for my taste. They have a pretty good selection of food and it's a good place to step into when it's cold. The chocolate muffin is great for a good breakfast. The seating could use some work, if all the tables are taken there's a very high chair and table you can sit on which isn't the most comfortable. I wish they would expand they're space for more seating. read more

Stopped by on my way to work. This is a hidden gem for a coffee shop. The latte was very good and they have the most selection of syrup flavors I have ever seen at a coffee shop. BUT, do not come here for food. Breakfast sandwiches are made with pre-cooked egg patties - even McDonald's does better than that. The quiches we settled on were pre-made but looked good. Woke up this morning with a hunger for not Starbucks coffee. With a simple Yelp search my family and I find ourselves heading to The Steam Engine. It is the perfect place for coffee or a spot of tea. The kids got cinnamon rolls that rivaled grandma's. I mean each bite was heaven! They had homemade pop tarts and an assortment of breakfast sandwiches. SInce my favorite coffee place closed (Bunker @ NOTO), I had been struggling to find another. The former owner of Bunker told me his sister opened The Steam Engine on 29th. Thank goodness! Their coffee is excellent and the staff is on point. For those of you whining because you weren't "served" this place is not a table side restaurant. You have to have the energy to go to the counter like ANYONE else would at ANY coffee shop. I am here one or twice a week. The prices are reasonable and the coffee is ambrosia. The former coffee was always tasting as if it were burnt. The Steam Engine got it right. Support small businesses and you will be rewarded with great product and friendly service. read more

I was wowed by the level of service I received at this coffee shop. Both employees made sure to interact with me and send me off with a smile. I ordered a latte breve and it was excellent. I also ordered a spinach quiche that had great flavor in a nice homemade crust. I will be back again when I travel through Topeka. In town for business. Like to eat at local establishments. Walk in with an associate for breakfast. Made eye contact with I'm assuming the hostest/cashier and person who runs off business. Ask her if we seat ourselves. I guess I was bothering her. She tilts her head towards a table. So we sit. She goes to the back to talk about all the delicious food we're not going to get. Another customer walks in. She immediately goes to serve him. At this we had been sitting st the table just chilling. About 5-7 minutes. At this time we got up to leave.
