Probably more like 2.5 stars, so rounded up. Plates were very reasonably priced & service quick--so these are positives. Friend in town suggested we meet here for dinner. Restaurant was busy with lots of staff & customers; which was hopeful sign. Unfortunately, we left disappointed. Chips seemed "over cooked" and although salsa tasted good, it was very soupy--I prefer salsa with chunks of veggies. I ordered fish tacos, and while nicely presented, were overly salty-I only ate one, and knew I would not have as left-overs. Restrooms were not well managed....staff were plentiful, but no one smiling. With all of the Mexican restaurants available in Lawrence, we will not return. read more

As soon as we walked in we were seated by the window, although there isn't much of a view this was a nice low-key, casual dining experience. The salsa has a great flavor and kind of chunky how I like it! The chips didn't have the best flavor, but still complimented the salsa well. I ordered a raspberry margarita on the rocks, and it had a good flavor (please note it's definitely on the sweet side). I ordered the Enchiladas Nortenas, which comes with 2 chicken and 1 cheese enchilada, but I opted to have all of them chicken. The rice was phenomenal, the beans were regular, and the enchiladas were great; packed with chicken and topped with cheese sauce, onions, and jalapeños. My guest ordered the fajitas Jalisco with shrimp on the side, since they're allergic to shell fish. I happily indulged on the shrimp, and it was perfectly cooked alongside being well seasoned. I also was able to taste the actual fajita Jalisco and it was cooked very well. The chicken and steak were both tender and easy to chew. The vegetables still had a little crunch, and the tortillas were still hot. This was my first visit, but I can see myself being a regular here since it isn't in a high volume/traffic area. Lawrence, Kansas: a quick overnight for us between Nashville and Colorado. We were craving some good Mexican food; one of us having just finished Senior year at Univ. of Alabama, Tuscaloosa (a town significantly lacking in decent Mexican food)...we were long overdue. Pretty good ratings, Acapulco looked like a sure thing. What was great - their chips and salsa was pretty dang great. The chips were warm (I personally love that) and though there wasn't much spice/heat to the salsa, it was quite tasty. I'll say our server was pretty great, too. Unfortunately, that's where it ends. What was not great - my sister wanted a salad and ordered the Fajita Taco Salad without the shell. What she got was a soggy mess. It looked like soup! It had only the smallest amount of chicken and lettuce - seriously, very little at all - and the bottom of the bowl looked like someone had poured a cup of super watery sour cream in! She said it didn't taste bad, but it sure looked awful. I ordered the Nachos Duluxe. It's a great portion size (huge) and has plenty of toppings but it's covered in melty queso/nacho cheese sauce. The menu just says "cheese nachos topped with beef, chicken and beans" so I was picturing melted shredded cheese. Some might like the queso! I'm not a fan - I think it just makes everything soggy. I ate enough to satisfy the craving and fill my belly but had I known it was queso, I would have ordered a burrito or something else. read more

It was just a Mexican food kinda day. I have been to most all the Mexican restaurants in Lawrence and enjoyed them all. A friend suggested Acapulco Mexican Grill and figured, "Why not?" Yep, we made the right choice. It wasn't crowded but steady. I am not sure how long they have been open but they seem to have a solid flow of customers. We had no problem getting a seat and getting served. Even though the weather was nice, we opted for dining inside and not on the patio. Spacious seating, noise level was perfect and we were off to a good start. The server was prompt, efficient and professional. He knew his stuff, too. He was very attentive and he refilled drinks without being asked. He even offered a Go-Cup for my tea. It's all in the details. I ordered a combination plate that had two enchiladas plus rice and beans. I added ala carte cheese enchilada which was so yummy! Actually, it was probably the best cheese enchilada I've ever had. I loved that the enchiladas were not swimming in too much sauce. They had a reasonable amount which let you taste the actual food. The beans and rice were... different. I am very sensitive to jalapeño and the beans had a faint taste of jalapeño. It wasn't very strong but it was noticeable. It did not linger, either, which is always good. Solid 4.5 in my book, and rounding up because my family dines here much more often than me & loves it! Review is based on my takeout experience, as well as a dine in experience about a year ago. For takeout, I ordered the Enchiladas Jalisco. It consisted of 1 cheese, 1 spicy chicken, and 1 beef enchilada. I loved the variety, although the beef was probably my favorite. The sauce was super flavorful and was the perfect amount. The Spanish rice was really good as well, very fluffy and not dry! Now for my favorite thing about this place...the Cozumel. I ordered this while dining in about a year ago and seriously haven't stopped thinking about it since. Everyone I dined with unanimously agreed that it was amazing. It consisted of scallops and shrimp I believe, a creamy cheese sauce, sautéed mushrooms and onions, and perhaps some other veggies. Easily my favorite dish I've ever ordered from a Mexican restaurant....and that's saying a lot. It made a lasting impression and I would've ordered it tonight for takeout if I had known it was the same place! Overall, great Mexican food. From what my family tells me, their dine in experience has always been pretty great as well. Can't wait to go back! read more

Very nice interior and friendly accomodating staff. Although in a strip mall, do not be discouraged- the food is very good and price reasonable. My shrimp with garlic and mushrooms can with the standard beans and rice but the shrimp was great! Lots of garlic bits which I love. Combo beef enchiladas was very good as was the flautas. Food was not good, taco was soggy, also had 3 different enchilada combo plate...they all tasted the same. Much, much better Mexican food in town, including Tex-Mex chains actually. Excellent Mexican food. Best I have had yet since moving from CO. Big table but drinks came out on time. Food was nice and hot at the table. I ordered the beef chimichanga smothered in "white sauce" with guac and sour cream on it. DELICIOUS! The only knock I have in this place is I was not a big fan of the salsa. It needed more flavor and definitely some more heat. Everything else was outstanding. Definitely recommend trying and will go again myself! One of my favorite spots! BIG burritos. BIG margs. Can't go wrong with that. The steak burrito covered in queso is my favorite. I did have one weird experience. My friend I was with had a soda cap in his burrito... the manger quickly replaced and apologized. I'll still came back often. Food is amazing. read more

I have now added a fifth star to my prior review. This restaurant is surprisingly authentic for Lawrence, where most Mexican restaurants are strictly Tex-Mex. To see what they can do here, I suggest that you ask for the three hot sauces. They will not offer them unless you request them. Otherwise they will provide only the salsa, which they bring out with chips. They make their own three hot sauces, which are the real thing, comparable to what you would find in Acapulco, Mexico (minus the amazing cliff divers in Acapulco). read more

I ate there for the first time Saturday. It took over from the last Mexican restaurant that was in there. This one is much better. The combo plate was good and had a variety of items. All were good. Customer service was good, the food was quick, and the prices are good. I liked the salsa and chips. The only other place on that side of town is Salty Iguana. Both are good. This is the new place and time will tell if they have figured out how differentiate themselves from other Mexican restaurants or if they will just be status par like all the others. I want them to be good and hope they make it. read more

We weren't sure what to expect our first time, but it's honestly a hidden gem! Every part of our experience was great - courteous and attentive staff, very reasonable prices and the best beef chimichanga we've ever had. Also the hot chips and fresh salsa! In the beginning, God created heaven and earth and animals and humans. As he gazed down upon his creation, he realized it was not good for (hu)man to be alone. So, in his infinite wisdom, he created Mexican food. He did this by, first, coaxing (hu)mans into deep sleep, removing their ribs and turning said ribs into flautas, burritos and tacos. (Hu)mans ate the food, God saw this and deemed it good. In all seriousness, I had the Acapulco Fajitas and they were pretty damn good, but my wife's dish was faaaaaar superior. She had the chile rellenos. Perfectly fluffy, cheesy and the sauce was amazing. Also, the guacamole was uuuuuuber fresh! We'll definitely be ordering from them in the future. read more

I love this family owned and run Mexican restaurant. They often make specialty margaritas and bring them to your table to try it out. Due to covid, I am not checking items in the store when I pickup but they cannot do a simple check before putting it in a plastic bag. I feel bad giving this restaurant such a low rating. The waiter was a lovely gentleman and what little of our food that we ate was very tasty but the low rating comes from the roach visitor that crawled from under one of our plates. Sorry, very disappointed. We went on a Wednesday night, and the place was busy; nonetheless, there were plenty of waiters flitting about...Too bad it took 20 minutes for one to find us. In the meantime, my husband had been to the bar to order two margaritas for us. Alas, they had Sprite in them. Worst. Margaritas, Ever. Our waiter finally arrived, and we ordered: another half hour later, the food came. (By then, we'd almost walked out, twice). The food was okay- certainly nothing extraordinary, and not much like the food we've enjoyed in Mexico. I wouldn't bother. We won't be visiting again.
