We eat there quite often. The service is always good and they have the best Chile Colorado in town.

The one question I have is why is it called The Wheel Barrel? I know a wheelbarrow, a wheel of cheese, a wine barrel, but I haven't figured out the name yet. If I make it back, maybe I can ask. The Wheel Barrel serves grill cheese/sandwiches and soup. I appreciate the concept and in this situation keeping it rather simple yet with some good selection for sandwiches and soup. I got a special wild rice and chicken soup with a half Baja turkey sandwich. It's a half and half for $12. I thought both tasted very good. I didn't eat quite all of it but I'd say it is a normal meal. Not a huge serving. I think most people would eat this in one meal. I think if I'm back in Topeka, I'll have to go back and do the traditional grilled cheese and tomato bisque! It was a busy lunch time meal. A nice size crowd was there. Service was still pretty quick. They have a rustic decor which is sort of like a wheelbarrow and a barrel. It's on a block that seems to be trying to add some art and culture to Topeka and I appreciate that a lot! If I'm back over that way, I'll stop back in and if definitely recommend it in Topeka.

Ordered a soup & 1/2 sandwich combo. Sandwich was decent. The soup tasted like they just opened the can poured it in the bowl added croutons and shredded cheese. Needless to say the soup was not even warm enough to melt the cheese. The taste was horrible and it smelled like stew. I had to ask for a lid for my drink cup as there weren't any stocked. As for my daughter's sandwich ...the bread was so hard you couldn't chew it, no chicken to speak of and the cheese was melted everywhere but the sandwich. No other toppings Her Mac n cheese was at least warm and half way decent. Then when we were leaving I needed something for my daughter's sandwich that she didn't finish. Stood at the counter for ever to get a piece of paper given to me to wrap it in. No bag, not a box offered...nothing. Had to ask for the sides that were included...chips, bread for the soup and the sauce for sandwich. Will not return.

I was in Topeka last weekend with my friend Rebecca K. to do some shopping, and she suggested stopping here to take the food back to Manhattan. However, I worked up a hunger and we decided to eat an early dinner. The restaurant opens for dinner at 4:30 PM. We arrived right before 5 and the France v. England third place World Cup Match was on. I got a mango lassi and we ordered chaat papri for an appetizer. I decided to order a lot so I could bring some back to Eric R. who loves Indian food. I got the badami chicken kebob as I had never heard of this but it sounded amazing. I also got lamb vindaloo. Rebecca K. got her own dish and garlic naan to share. The chaat papri game out with three chutneys on the side and it was SO good. The badami chicken was marinated in yogurt, lemon, almond paste, and spices. It was served with onions on a sizzling platter like fajitas! We got plenty of basmati rice with our meal. It was absolutely delicious. I had lots of food to take home and share with Eric R. the next day. The service was also excellent. I will definitely be back here to try new dishes, especially since there are many that I do not see typically on Indian restaurant menus.

My husband asked about a chicken friend steak, so I Yelp'd and low-and-behold, Cook's is really close to where we were. I was raised in a small midwestern town, and this, folks, is a quintessential midwestern diner! I didn't snap a pic of the menu, but ordering is done at the register and all the prices are very reasonable. I ordered a coffee & western omelette, which came with a side of hash-browns and biscuit. The coffee, very standard diner percolator brewed stuff, was fresh and the perfect consistency. The food was served quickly by a cheerful waitress who came by a few times to continue to check on us. My husband was very pleased with his chicken fried steak, hash-browns, eggs and toast. My breakfast was well-portioned; not a huge plate but definitely ample, fresh and tasty! The best part of the experience for me what the cleanliness of the dining room. Not fancy- utilitarian carpet, linoleum table tops- but so clean, fresh and well-tended. It seemed busy for a Thursday morning; more than half the dining room was occupied, and the low storefront of the building is easy to miss, but I was confident these customers were regulars. We don't live in Topeka, but this is now my fav restaurant there, so I plan to return!
