We were in town for a comedy show, so we decided to grab some quick eats before heading over to the…read moreshow. We saw the good reviews about this place, and we weren't disappointed! I had some shrimp tacos, and they were so good, pretty much exactly what I'm looking for in a street taco. We were able to get seats away from a loud group that also happened to be there, so that was nice. We asked the server if they could expedite us (not the best planning to come in just 45m before the show started!) and they were happy to accommodate us. They also kept our drinks filled and were very congenial. I would say the prices are a bit on the high side, but that's probably typical for the downtown area. After the show, I kept thinking about those tacos and wanting more more more!! That's definitely a good sign that they were quite tasty!

Five stars for the sweet potato and bean taco! Hands down the best flavors and my favorite taco…read moreI've had in a very long time. We had three other tacos at our table as well as guacamole. All other items outside the sweet potato taco were good just nothing to rave about. The entrance to the restaurant is very small and quite uncomfortable for getting checked in. Service ended up being better than I thought. Our waitress started out less than thrilled having to take care of our party of four but her attitude quickly turned in a positive direction, thank goodness because it was our first time visiting. We live in Olathe so while we won't be regulars we will definitely return in the future.

El Centenario is pretty decent Mexican food in Topeka…read more I've been to El Centenario a half-dozen times. It helps that it is just a couple blocks away from work, it's easy to get a consensus among co-workers as a place to go for lunch, and it has had good and consistent food that comes out pretty speedy. I know that the menu is filled with diverse items, but I keep gravitating to the same lunch item over and over -- 1 taco, 1 burrito, and refried beans. It's not an exciting lunch, but it's remarkably affordable (~$6!) and it is very filling. El Centenario also plys you with heaping baskets of tortilla chips and salsa. My recommendation -- request the salsa picante. It's a spicy ranchera-style sauce, it has a rather spicy pepper bite, but I've gotten to the point that I will eat chips with it spooned over the top, while one of my coworkers mixes some of the spicy salsa into her bowl of regular salsa. I won't say that El Centenario is the most authentic Mexican restaurant, but it does fit solidly into the current concepts for TexMex / Mexican that is run and staffed by Latin-Americans. Considering some of the other "Mexican" food in Topeka, it's about as authentic as you are going to get without heading over to the taquerias on the east side.
