Ordered a margarita and it was brought out in 2 small water cups because they were out of glasses. So odd. What can you say about "El Mez" here in Topeka? They've been around for a LONGGGGG time. They don't do anything spectacular and yet I've never felt like I had a really poor meal. Most folks probably frequent on their "cheap margs days" (up to $1.50 in 2023) which are served in small plastic cups. Veterans like myself order them two at a time and they go well with their decent complimentary chips and salsa. Having sampled much of the menu, my "go-to" entree is the Tacos de Carne Asada which comes with 3 generous sized tacos, pico de gallo, a roasted pepper salsa and a side of refrieds. They are well known for their Mexican cheese sauce that they smother many of their dishes with. This prompted a dear Hispanic friend of mine to label the whole establishment El Mez Gravy. My daughter enjoyed MANY "Vegetarian Combo B" (two bean burritos smothered in that cheese sauce) during her youth! read more

I've never been here before and have lived a block away for over 2 years. Let me tell you something folks. I walked in without a clue about the place except what's online. As I walked in clueless to what was to come. Immediately I was welcomed by my new friend Roberto inviting me to either sit at a table or as I then asked,"Is there a bar here also"? He gladly pointed me into the direction and walked with me across the restaurant with all the class a person with integrity would do. I sat down at the bar, Roberto then offered me the impressive menu of mouthwatering, sizable and authentic cuisine that is their specialty of course. I ordered a large margarita which was 2 fold by the time I left and was then offered the chips and salsa which of course I agreed to as he listened to our conversation admirably. I requested hot salsa which he brought with fresh and crispy warm chips, the mild and hotter salsa and it all was without any issues or delay. It was impressive for Topeka. I was not rushed, forgotten about nor was I not welcomed into the family atmosphere. Definitely a local establishment that deserves 5 stars from someone that will call it out if "it ain't right". I will support the kindness shown to me, a complete stranger walking in and now feel that it's a safe place for all, has great food and an great atmosphere that lacked drama. My brother and his family visit this place regularly as they live in Topeka so we have been there a few times. I will never shy away from queso, chips, and salsa....all in that order....and they do very well with the cheese dip. I think their food is decent but not great. Authentic Mexican restaurant. Food was great, service was great. Everyone that worked in the restaurant was mexican which is always a good sign, especially for a place that is in Kansas. As we were seated, we were given a bowl of salsa and a basket of freshly fried corn tortilla chips. Their menu consisted of all the traditional mexican foods that you can purchase as a combo or a-la-carte. The only thing that looked out of place was the cheeseburger that was on the kids menu. I ended up going with the #2 combo which consisted of 1 taco, 1beef enchilada covered in red sauce, and 1 chalupa. All of the items were great, they did not use cheddar cheese like a lot of mexican restaurants use, they used this white cheddar cheese that had a bit somewhat stronger flavor to it. The only thing I didn't like too much was the salsa that came with the chips. We ordered burrito, enchilada combination, and let me tell you this is a Mexican restaurant for homeless people cause that's who they think they're cooking for. It was just meat stuffed into tortilla/corn tortilla and the meat wasn't even seasoned. Walking out I noticed a crockpot of that awful cheese dip. We used to always hit up El Mezcal in the college days in Lawrence and now as I make more trips out to Topeka we typically try and eat there as well. A lot has to do with the nostalgia brought from past time when we used to eat here. With the memories comes good tasty Mexican food. The service is fast so when you order expect the food to come out quickly regardless whatever time you visit for Lunch, Snack, or Dinner. We always enjoy the tasty chips and salsa as well. You can spend as much time as you want here or make it a quick stop and go on your way. If you are there during dinner time you can expect a longer than usual wait but don't worry they get people in and out super-fast so you don't have to wait too long. My new favorite thing to order here are the chicken fajitas. Made fresh and fast and sizzling with flavor once brought to the table with some beans, rice, and guacamole. Every bite is as good as the first. When you leave just leave your tip on the table and pay on your way out to the cashier. Hopefully you can enjoy this place as much as we have in the past and still continue to today. read more

There are a plethora of mediocre mexican restaurants in Topeka. This restaurant is 1 of 2 mexican restaurants which I really enjoy eating at. It's pretty busy most days during the week but they're able to handle the volume with a large number of staff. I really like their burritos, taco salad etc. They also have more 'authentic' Mexican dishes which my fiancee really appreciates being able to select from. The only real compliant I have is their salsa. Like everywhere else in Topeka, it's completely bland and might as well be Pace brand (maybe it is). I forgot to ask last time if they have a spicier option (many Mexican restaurants here do if you ask) but I will next time and report back. Good consistent quality and incredibly cheap. Even their margaritas are fairly cheap and consist a significant amount of actual alcohol (not just mix). I know they have a take-out option though we've never used it. I generally don't get take-out when dining in is an option but it's nice for those who do prefer to eat at home. read more

When eating at Mexican restaurants, usually the food is comparable. So service is what I really look at. If you are looking for decent service. THIS IS NOT THE PLACE. We had a party of 10, but that's no excuse for the terrible service we got. Waiter took all of our drink orders and didn't write anything down. So of course he forgot half the order. Once we all finally got our drinks it took forever for him to come back to get our food order. Food was decent, but the overall poor service made the experience below average. One more thing. Reason #7,652 - Why I love El Mezcal! Eric and I love the Nachos Fajitas, and we usually share them. Tonight, it took a little longer than usual to receive our food, but it is a Thursday night and they are always packed on Thursday. Our waiter came over and apologized, and we told him we weren't in any hurry. When our nachos got to the table, they weren't piping hot like they usually are. We didn't complain, because the Nachos Fajita was still really good. We are a couple bites into our dinner and our waiter comes over with a new plate of food. He explains that he realized our nachos had been in the window longer than he thought, and gave us a new plate that was piping hot. read more

I got the expensive white cheese dip which is of course good (what oohy gooy melted cheese isn't?!) i also got one of the 99c margaritas which was worth the money. I got the Burrito Gigante (or something) and it was literally the size of a baby! it was 10 bucks, but if i wasn't in man vs. food mode, I would have had plenty for another meal.
