Just ordered 2 pan fried tacos with beef.So beef in soggy shell then lettuce with cheese on top. Also ordered side of rice with cheese. All the cheese was mixed with lettuce on top of pan fried tacos. Chips are always stale so through chips away. I ended up throwing it all away.Service ok just bad food. read more

The food didn't really stand out. I can't remember even going here. But I know I must have because I recently visited a different restaurant for Mexican cuisine and vaguely remember comparing the taste of being the same. They're being said I would probably come here again if I ever did at all. I'm sure their drinks are swell if nothing else is. read more

If you're craving great Mexican food and Jorge's is packed, head down the street to El Mezcal--it's always a win. The place is clean, welcoming, and has a great atmosphere. Their chips are consistently fresh, and the salsa and queso are the perfect kickoff to an awesome lineup of dishes. The staff is friendly, quick, and always on top of things. Whether you're dining in or calling ahead for carryout, El Mezcal is a solid go-to. read more

First impression was the place was dirty-food all over the floor and several dirty tables. Our waiter was nice but disinterested. Ordered a margarita and it was brought out in 2 small water cups because they were out of glasses. So odd. I ordered the Chile Colorado which had great flavor from the meat being grilled and the sauce was great. The meat was in larger chunks than I have experienced at other places. Solid tortilla served with solid rice/beans. I'd try again but there are other options. read more

What can you say about "El Mez" here in Topeka? They've been around for a LONGGGGG time. They don't do anything spectacular and yet I've never felt like I had a really poor meal. Most folks probably frequent on their "cheap margs days" (up to $1.50 in 2023) which are served in small plastic cups. Veterans like myself order them two at a time and they go well with their decent complimentary chips and salsa. Having sampled much of the menu, my "go-to" entree is the Tacos de Carne Asada which comes with 3 generous sized tacos, pico de gallo, a roasted pepper salsa and a side of refrieds. They are well known for their Mexican cheese sauce that they smother many of their dishes with. This prompted a dear Hispanic friend of mine to label the whole establishment El Mez Gravy. My daughter enjoyed MANY "Vegetarian Combo B" (two bean burritos smothered in that cheese sauce) during her youth! read more

I used to be a regular here back in my college days.... The taste has not dropped off one bit!! So I rate 5 stars! Yes this place does white cheese dip the RIGHT way. (As if I'm a professional chef) the family loved it. Ordering was easily done over the phone and lightning fast it was ready. Short drive to get it from the hotel... Still hot when I got it back. Had Pollo loco and it was delicious! I already know the leftovers will be just as delicious. Mask life was in effect. & It was posted at the door..+2 stars The line was short (call in order) generous amount of chips came with our order. Ordered large cheese dip / large guacamole also salsa had plenty to share. Their house salsa was flavor packed and spicy one I ordered...well the heat was there!!!.. Yummo. This experience was pretty delightful & delicious. +5 stars I will go back for sure. They get a phenomenal review from me. The staff is friendly & delightful as well. Keep up the good work. My monies were well spent! Glad to have leftovers Respectfully Bryan Yukon, Oklahoma read more

Terrible service. Waiter took our order brought it and then left for a long period of time . Came back when completely finished and we were needing to leave. Didn't even ask if we needed a refill. We had to ask. Then the manager. (Not of ethnic background)? Over charged us. I looked up the prices just to make sure . And he sure did overcharge . The food is not that great. Too salty. Not enough actual flavor . Seems dirty. Dated . And waiters are lazy. Surprisingly the old ,old waiters move faster and are more attentive ( actualy WAITING) then Those younger ones . Sad really. Won't be going back. read more

The food was not good the night we went. The ground beef in the enchiladas and tacos had no flavor and no seasonings. The service was nonexistent. He was more worried about what who was buzzing hom on his phone than making sure our order was submitted. The chips were stale and the salsa tasted like tomato sauce from a can. The price totally overshadowed the quality. We will not be back. read more

Placed a to go order tonight. Pan fried tacos, a tamale and rice and beans and cheese dip. They said 20 minutes until it was ready. I went in 15. We live 3 minutes from them. Everything was soggy and cold when we got home. The chicken had obviously been sitting in some water for a while. The salsa had so much oregano in it that it tasted like pasta sauce. To say we were disappointed is an understatement. Do better!! read more

Service was not good the food was very very average. I ordered a Margaritas for me and my wife now the picture on the menu showed a big glass with a rim of salt and some Ice to make it cold, what we got was a small plastic cup with warm margaritas very little alcohol and no salt. The plus was the chips and salsa were not bad. read more

Felt like home from the moment I got in! Great chips & salsa, fantastic chorizo, wonderful nachos! Always makes my mouth water

First off they always welcome you to the restaurant. Always happy to see you and say hello. Salsa has a great flavor and has substance . Food is good and they actually have substantial sides for meals. The refried beans were fresh and had yummy cheese on top. Nice and clean They appreciate you being there whether it's your first time or your 47th. Go find your favorite menu item. I keep finding new favorites. read more

I've never been here before and have lived a block away for over 2 years. Let me tell you something folks. I walked in without a clue about the place except what's online. As I walked in clueless to what was to come. Immediately I was welcomed by my new friend Roberto inviting me to either sit at a table or as I then asked,"Is there a bar here also"? He gladly pointed me into the direction and walked with me across the restaurant with all the class a person with integrity would do. I sat down at the bar, Roberto then offered me the impressive menu of mouthwatering, sizable and authentic cuisine that is their specialty of course. I ordered a large margarita which was 2 fold by the time I left and was then offered the chips and salsa which of course I agreed to as he listened to our conversation admirably. I requested hot salsa which he brought with fresh and crispy warm chips, the mild and hotter salsa and it all was without any issues or delay. It was impressive for Topeka. I was not rushed, forgotten about nor was I not welcomed into the family atmosphere. Definitely a local establishment that deserves 5 stars from someone that will call it out if "it ain't right". I will support the kindness shown to me, a complete stranger walking in and now feel that it's a safe place for all, has great food and an great atmosphere that lacked drama. I saw a family atmosphere with a definite awareness to respect. This establishment definitely exudes integrity. Well done folks ...Well done. Thank you for the open door and respect. Worth checking out folks. I'm impressed. I'm not sponsored, I'm just a guy that wanted a killer margarita and got it. Thank you Roberto and everyone I met. Be safe and take care my friends. read more

Had tacos de carne asada which were filled with meat. Must get a side of shredded white cheese. Request rice over beans. The house margaritas are ok, a bit on the sour side but willing to give them a second chance. Salsa is ok and white queso is a good treat. read more

The service was good. We had a larger party and waiter did very well keeping up with us. I ordered 2 tamales. I don't know how old they were or what the problem was with them, but they were inedible. Authentic Mexican restaurant. Food was great, service was great. Everyone that worked in the restaurant was mexican which is always a good sign, especially for a place that is in Kansas. As we were seated, we were given a bowl of salsa and a basket of freshly fried corn tortilla chips. Their menu consisted of all the traditional mexican foods that you can purchase as a combo or a-la-carte. The only thing that looked out of place was the cheeseburger that was on the kids menu. I ended up going with the #2 combo which consisted of 1 taco, 1beef enchilada covered in red sauce, and 1 chalupa. All of the items were great, they did not use cheddar cheese like a lot of mexican restaurants use, they used this white cheddar cheese that had a bit somewhat stronger flavor to it. The only thing I didn't like too much was the salsa that came with the chips. I thought it tasted a little too much like tomato sauce, but that didn't stop me from dipping my chips into it. read more

What this place lacks in knowledge or discipline of any culinary skill(s) beyond anything you'd find at a roadside greasy spoon they most certainly make up for in raw brutish "yummy" strength. This place always seems to be busy. I guessed it was their $0.99 margarita special. i would think after an evening of 99 cent margaritas the best one could expect is a headache and at worst a headache and a DWI. Upon sitting down you will be greeted by a generously sized bowl of warm crispy salty corn chips. The chip quality I'll give them a "B" and salsa a "B++". The salsa is surprisingly lite, zesty and flavorful. It is excellent with chips or even poured over the meal. If you want a hassle free lunch just stop by around 3-4pm. Everything is zip zip fast. read more

My brother and his family visit this place regularly as they live in Topeka so we have been there a few times. I will never shy away from queso, chips, and salsa....all in that order....and they do very well with the cheese dip. I think their food is decent but not great. I will more than likely eat here again, but honestly, that's because there are not very many options in town. read more

The chimichanga I had was amazing! Plus it came with a generous portion of sides. The service was fast and responsive.

Wonderful service and delicious food! I ordered the shrimp nachos and they were amazing. The horchata was great. I will definitely be going back!! read more

Awful. Cheese dip was the consistency of soup, the salsa was thicker. We ordered burrito, enchilada combination, and let me tell you this is a Mexican restaurant for homeless people cause that's who they think they're cooking for. It was just meat stuffed into tortilla/corn tortilla and the meat wasn't even seasoned. Walking out I noticed a crockpot of that awful cheese dip. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna have painful diarrhea later. I'm not kidding about this place. read more

Solid 76-87 decibels the entire time we were here. Phone app for that. Could not hear the people across the table. People were yelling to have a conversation. Got tacos that were filled with onions. So here I am at el Mezcal and definitely am not going to leave satisfied. My drink was hot and my food was cold, waitress acts like he doesn't speak much English when I try to tell him how my food is messed up thus leaving me to pay basically 20.00 for a plate of cold disgusting mess.. but does go on to tell me how my order was cold because there were a lot of Togo orders. read more

There are a plethora of mediocre mexican restaurants in Topeka. This restaurant is 1 of 2 mexican restaurants which I really enjoy eating at. It's pretty busy most days during the week but they're able to handle the volume with a large number of staff. I really like their burritos, taco salad etc. They also have more 'authentic' Mexican dishes which my fiancee really appreciates being able to select from. The only real compliant I have is their salsa. Like everywhere else in Topeka, it's completely bland and might as well be Pace brand (maybe it is). I forgot to ask last time if they have a spicier option (many Mexican restaurants here do if you ask) but I will next time and report back. Good consistent quality and incredibly cheap. Even their margaritas are fairly cheap and consist a significant amount of actual alcohol (not just mix). I know they have a take-out option though we've never used it. I generally don't get take-out when dining in is an option but it's nice for those who do prefer to eat at home. read more

We used to always hit up El Mezcal in the college days in Lawrence and now as I make more trips out to Topeka we typically try and eat there as well. A lot has to do with the nostalgia brought from past time when we used to eat here. With the memories comes good tasty Mexican food. The service is fast so when you order expect the food to come out quickly regardless whatever time you visit for Lunch, Snack, or Dinner. We always enjoy the tasty chips and salsa as well. You can spend as much time as you want here or make it a quick stop and go on your way. If you are there during dinner time you can expect a longer than usual wait but don't worry they get people in and out super-fast so you don't have to wait too long. My new favorite thing to order here are the chicken fajitas. Made fresh and fast and sizzling with flavor once brought to the table with some beans, rice, and guacamole. Every bite is as good as the first. When you leave just leave your tip on the table and pay on your way out to the cashier. Hopefully you can enjoy this place as much as we have in the past and still continue to today. read more

Service was great!, Super quick! started off with the salsa which after reading some of these reviews, i expected tomato sauce, but it was actually not too bad! I got the expensive white cheese dip which is of course good (what oohy gooy melted cheese isn't?!) i also got one of the 99c margaritas which was worth the money. I got the Burrito Gigante (or something) and it was literally the size of a baby! it was 10 bucks, but if i wasn't in man vs. food mode, I would have had plenty for another meal. Overall I had an excellent experience. As far as the dinner entrees go, i felt they were a little overpriced but the lunch menu seemed much more reasonable. the food was fresh tasting with authentic flavor read more

Reason #7,652 - Why I love El Mezcal! Eric and I love the Nachos Fajitas, and we usually share them. Tonight, it took a little longer than usual to receive our food, but it is a Thursday night and they are always packed on Thursday. Our waiter came over and apologized, and we told him we weren't in any hurry. When our nachos got to the table, they weren't piping hot like they usually are. We didn't complain, because the Nachos Fajita was still really good. We are a couple bites into our dinner and our waiter comes over with a new plate of food. He explains that he realized our nachos had been in the window longer than he thought, and gave us a new plate that was piping hot. read more

When eating at Mexican restaurants, usually the food is comparable. So service is what I really look at. If you are looking for decent service. THIS IS NOT THE PLACE. We had a party of 10, but that's no excuse for the terrible service we got. Waiter took all of our drink orders and didn't write anything down. So of course he forgot half the order. Once we all finally got our drinks it took forever for him to come back to get our food order. Food was decent, but the overall poor service made the experience below average. One more thing. Be carful when walking in the restaurant. The floors are so slick. Several of us almost fell. Maybe they should clean the floor. read more

It's more of an authentic Mexican restaurant than American Mexican. Chimichanga didn't come with ground beef but cut up beef. The salsa was excellent, chips a bit too thick for our liking. We also didn't see our waiter again after our food was delivered. We had to flag down a runner and ask for refills. Service could've been a lot better. read more

Best Mexican restaurant in Topeka. Authentic, delicious, inexpensive, plus a great atmosphere and staff to boot. I haven't tried anything here I didn't like, but my favorites are the white cheese sauce for chips (seriously, try this), the chimichangas, and the tacos.
