Being new to the neighborhood I decided to stop at this restaurant because authentic Mexican food is my absolute favorite food in the world. The ambiance of the restaurant shouts authenticity. The decor invites you to sit and, possibly, enjoy a dining extravaganza. How disappointing to find that the food did not match the presentation. You would think that Los Charros' restaurant owners would be intensely competitive in a city such as Topeka, inundated with a huge number of Mexican restaurants. Los Charros' food quality, taste and presentation is so substandard that it is quite obvious they aren't interested in winning any type of culinary award or garnering five stars. I ordered a taco salad, to go. The amount of salad wasn't enough to feed a five year old. The ground beef looked like dog food and had absolutely no taste or flavor. I looked at it, took two bites and threw my food away. There was nothing "authentic " about this food. They gave me a bag of chips and salsa. The salsa didn't have much flavor and the chips didn't have any appeal, either. I would advice anyone who doubts the truthfulness of this review to go to Los Charros, and see for yourself. You will surely find that you will never want to dine in this restaurant, again. Sadly, this restaurant gives a bad name to the Mexican culture and authentic Mexican Food. Nothing exciting here, just an okay place. Pretty standard for Mexican food in this area. The typical combo platters and go-to options. I do love the atmosphere; very colorful and inviting. Walking distance from the zoo. The staff was friendly. I did love my chile relleno. I will say the burrito my husband had had way too much chicken in it. Like, it was jam packed with nothing else inside except onions so it just wasn't satisfying to eat. I know we will return we just aren't running back. read more

Terrible experience. Won't be back! We ordered 5 margs to go at $12.50 each in addition to a large family dinner order and the owner himself told me he had to charge me another $4.50 times two for chips and salsa as that's the only way he could make money. My family walked out with what he admitted was a $425 bill and paid for chips and salsa. read more

My brother and his family go here weekly and they invited me. I am so glad they did. Spent my life at Casa on the Blvd in Topeka, moved to San Antonio where they have excellent Mexican food, and most recently Tucson Arizona. Everything I have tried here is wonderful and I always have leftovers to bring home for two or three more meals. The flavor, texture and heat level (as opposed to cold) was always great. The pan fried tacos and fajitas are great, guacamole is fantastic, as is the cheese dip. Loved the chili rellenos. Give it a try. read more

Stopped in for lunch while in the area. The salsa is some of the best I've had. Good queso and fresh chips. The fajita burrito was yummy, our food was cooked to order. I enjoyed a liter Michelada with lunch and it was very good. We will be back when in Topeka read more

When we first walked in there was nobody upfront but we were soon greeted. We were seated at a booth which is what we asked for. They followed regulations seating everyone 6 feet apart or every other table, which is what they were doing. He got our drinks quickly and took our order. He was very kind, I don't remember his name. The food came out quickly, it was hot, everything tasted great. It was a good amount of food for the right price. There were a couple things on the menu that seemed a little overpriced but everything else seemed about right. I would definitely recommend this place and I will be going back. read more

Taco salad and taco arrived soaking in greasy water which made them both soggy. How hard is it to drain the meat?

We tried to eat here tonight and were never greeted or spoken to. It was 7:50pm...they're open till 10. A few people peaked out from the back, but no one ever came over. We left and will never return. read more

Don't go here with a Groupon! I went today for lunch and there is a sign saying that there is a minimum $20 charge to use my $12 Groupon. In other words, I would have to order TWO lunches for myself to use my $12 Groupon. This was NOT specified on the "fine print" of the document. Tried to talk with the manager, but he was sitting at the bar on the phone - after 10 min. I left. No idea how the food is, but if they are trying to bring new customers in by offering Groupon deals, then do this, don't see how they will stay in business. read more

Awesome specials, great people. We've had good service during a busy dinner rush, and a weekend lunch! Fresh ingredients and melted queso compliment every meal we've had thus far. Our family loves Los Charros. They have amazing food, in fact they have the only chile rellenos that I actually love. Everything tastes fresh, the salsa has a good kick and I love the cilantro in it. Even better than the food, though, is the customer service. The very first time we ate there, the waiter (whom we always try to get!) brought my son a giant plate of delicious sopapillas for dessert. We go at least twice a month and have never had a bad experience. I highly recommend Los Charros! read more

Los Charros is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in town. Colorful tables and chairs and a lively nightlife make this a great spot for socializing and fun. But personally, I love just stopping by here for an intimate dinner with friends and/or my husband. Great food, plentiful chips and salsa and efficient staff. Los Charros serves fairly good Mexican food. Just a bit overpriced though. The service has always been excellent. All the waitstaff are very friendly and attentive. Their homemade salsa is great and comes with the standard complimentary chips. I like their enchiladas. They usually have a daily special that turns out to be a good deal price wise. read more

How in the world can this place have even one star? My wife and I ordered the sampler special (delivered to the table under three minutes so super fresh right?) it came with a taco, enchilada, chile relleno, and a tostada. The taco and tostada were on terribly stale shells, which was nice because it detracted from the cold, dry hamburger. The relleno was made with an Anaheim chile, and was perhaps the grossest thing I've ever consumed. Calling this place anything other than a lame attempt at Mexican food is an insult to every respectable joint out there. I don't get how Topeka restaurants can be this bad. Does no one travel and see that there is great food to be had elsewhere? If you are considering this restaurant do yourself a favor and go elsewhere (hell, Taco Bell would be better) read more

I went in on a Friday night about 530 and I couldn't get anyone to seat me. I had 3 or 4 employees walk by and look at me, then they kept on walking. After standing in the lobby for about 5 minutes and feeling like an idiot, I decided to eat elsewhere. I have not been back, nor do I indent to return. I gave the place 2 stars because I had eaten there previously and it was OK, but nothing to write home about. I ordered a chicken dish that was mostly a big pile of melted cheese with a couple small shreds of chicken. An upset stomach followed. Friends didn't like their meals either. The only plus was 99 cent margaritas...but they were warm. Next time I'm craving Mexican, I won't be going here. read more

This restaurant has quick service with attentive staff. They give more vegetables, spices and ingredients than El Mez who is slipping. Asked if they had a hotter house salsa and they brought out two awesomely hot choices. Always large quantities and down to earth. Pleasantly pleased with their food and service, came back a week later for mom's 50th birthday and the drinks and shots kept coming...for free. Got to the restaurant around 6pm with my family of 4 (one less than a year). We asked for a high chair and the one we received did not have a working buckle to secure the child. I didn't bother to ask for another one, I just went to the stack to get a different one. Out of the stack, there was one with a working buckle. The waiter came over to get our order once and we said we needed a minute. Our youngest child was not cooperating, so we decided we'd need make our order to go. About 15 minutes later the waiter came to take the order. I told him we needed the entire order to go. After we told him each entree, he asked again, is this to go. Each time we repeated ourselves that, yes, it is to go. By this time, two tables across from us had finished their meals and a new set of patrons were in the row of booths. About 20 minutes into the wait, the waiter had come by twice to say the food would be out soon or 'any minute'. My wife took the kids home as the youngest one was about to have a fit. The waiter came by one more time and said they got real busy and they are 'trying to make it'. Meanwhile, I noticed one of the booths had received their food, though they arrived about 20 minutes after we did. About 45 minutes since our order was placed (I checked into Yelp right after the order, so I know), a booth of 5 people straight across from my table received their food and they had been there maybe 25 minutes. I went to the register and waited in line so I could offer to pay for the drinks. The hostess acted as though she could magically produce the food at that point. I told her I wasn't interested. She waived the drinks and apologized. My wife is best friends with someone who is friends of the owners. Maybe they couldn't put the food in to go boxes because they need elbow length oven mitts to carry the plates out since they are so hot. Who knows? I know I won't be caught dead there. Stay away. Stay very far away if that's how they choose to treat some of their customers. read more
