Withholding one star due to the unavailability of margaritas. Something about their desire not to seal off the restaurante from the adjoining grocery store being in conflict with Kansas' antiquated liquor laws. Both the store and the restaurant are among the cleanest spots you will find in Topeka. They have maintained that standard for a couple years now so it's obviously something they are committed to. The staff is always attentive and friendly (we have visited many times by now and have never had a bad experience). Probably the best salsa/guac/condiment bar I have seen at a Mexican restaurant. My personal fav is a creamy pale green sauce made with cucumber and jalepeno. Don't miss it! Lots of great choices on the menu with their mixed platters being very popular with the locals. My personal favs are the carnitas filled chimi smothered in their divine "special queso" or the chicken flautas. Pro tip: They sell many of their prepared meats by the pound to-go. The carne asada tacos are legit! They are even good reheated in the microwave the next day- and I'm picky when it comes to leftovers. I think the beans are a little bland but the rice is super tasty & We love their queso with the home made chips, they are so good when they are fresh! On a whim, to see if Topeka had any kind of street taco scene I decided to blow off a few hours and make the drive from Lawrence. So this is something for me, because my car pointed the other direction towards Kansas City--I've probably done it 250 times for Mexican. And what's this? El Torito, I didn't recognize this but it's a large and very unexpectedly spectacular Hispanic grocery with a restaurant attached. Its sister grocery is of course on Central Ave. in KCK. While I was the first to review the Topeka grocery at a solid 5 stars, I think the restaurant is a solid 4, exactly what other Yelpers think. And while Tex-Mex and clearly Americanized south of the border cuisine isn't my thing, and I kind of avoid it, there is no denying the food here is spectacular, and low priced. So out come passable/so-so chips and unremarkable hot sauces, a sure sign of the nod towards the gringo, ie., me. Service quite good, just a sort of sterile, unimaginative decor that screams no money spent on a remodel from what this used to be. Lunch: Tacos de Papa: holy ****, are these to die for! Four big fried tacos filled with mashed potatoes and some other types of goodness that would make you cry, so good. I ordered one tripas street style taco, wonderful, also a tostado ceviche topped with huge slices of avocado. Sublime. Yes, this was my last meal of the day in case you're wondering. But wait, the sauces at the sauce bar where limes, pico de gallo, a mango salsa, and more. There isn't a 6 star rating or I'd be pushing it for their sauces. In particular their spicy avocado sauce was brilliant. Plenty of heat, plenty of richness, an inspiring creation that showed brilliance. I can't say I've had a sauce that good in my Kansas City visits. Apparently the city has stood up and took notice. Tuesday at lunch and this massive restaurant is half full which is a lot of folks. Real plus is cerveza license so have a bottle with your meal if you wish. So I got my answer, and now that it's clear there's a sizable scene here, I'll be returning to explore more, including a taco truck a girl in the grocery store said was the best tacos to ever pass her lips. I'd like to confirm that. Does this city have a Hispanic food scene? Yes, apparently a very good one, and I'm now on the hunt in a new location. read more

On Wednesday bottle beer is 2 for $2.50.. If you want a great lunch for about $5 bucks, a steal, you gotta' check this place out. Don't forget to check out the salsa bar. You'll find different types of salsa and guacamole too. If you or someone in your party is a guacamole monster, then this is the place. This restaurant is connected to a grocery store. Being waiting for month for them to open Monday thru Friday .... and guess what this just happen The store produce and meat are beyond expected. Very clean and well stocked. But at the restaurant side still some improvement to do the wait for the food it's about 15-20 minutes. I was pretty full with chips and salsa by the time I got my food. Bought over $50 in items from El Torito on July 29. One of the items was Poloma corn tortillas. I thought it was strange the were frozen but they looked good and all of them were frozen. Didn't notice a use by date and brought them home and set them out to thaw. Went to use them today making chicken enchilada casserole with homemade red enchilada sauce. Well the tortillas were moldy and had to throw them away. Looked for the use by date and it was July 22, 2022. I've had commercial brand corn tortillas for very long periods of time without going bad. Thought I was getting something special since they were somewhat pricey too. Guess I learned to be more discerning and less trusting in my purchases. read more

Their food is really good, but don't bother placing an online order and expecting it ready for at least 30-45 min beyond what it tells you. I have ordered here twice and the food is never ready and I end up waiting 30 min inside the lobby. If you want to dine in, I'm sure it's great but don't order to-go for dinner. They either need to update their wait time or check on their online orders because we get snubbed otherwise. Sad because I really love their food. read more

This is a fairly new place in North Topeka and was surprised it wasn't even on Yelp yet. I grew up in North Topeka and it great to see a new addition to this side of town. This place has many great things going for it that I think will make it a winner. The food was was mostly grilled and not all the normal "everything covered in cheese" that most places serve. The chips were fresh and they have a salsa bar with guacamole as an item. Who serves guacamole for free on the salsa bar. The prices where amazing cheap. We had three meals with drinks for $30. So, great food, clean place, cheap, and fresh salsa. Hard to go wrong with that combo. read more

We both ordered the special, an open face burrito with beef, chicken and shrimp. This place was not what I was expecting at all! We shopped at the grocery store then wanted to try the restaurant. The salsa bar is worth its weight in gold. The food was really good and so cheap! I got fajitas for $8, including shrimp! My only problems: the service was super super slow. There weren't many people when we got there and it took forever for anything to happen. Just found out about El Torito, and I've been there several times already. I love that they serve more authentic Mexican food! All the different types of tacos are awesome, and they're so cheap that I'm not afraid to get a little adventurous. You can get a ton of food for cheap here, and it's all so good. They also have a free sauce/salsa/guac bar that you can sample as well. They also serve chips and salsa to everyone. Every time I've been there was fairly busy, and the speed of service is reasonable. It can get a little bit loud, just because of how the restaurant is set up, but it's still a pleasant place to eat. The attached grocery store with lots of Mexican specialty items is very cool as well! Great place to do a little browsing to walk off some of your meal. read more

This is my one and only time trying this place. Let's start with the good stuff. I like the toppings bar there are several different salsas and guacamole. However nothing is labeled so you have no idea how spicy anything is. Their chips were good. I ordered 3 carne Assad steak tacos and rice and beans. First of all the meat was soaking in grease so much they needed to have two tortillas so they didn't fall apart. The meat it self was souped dry and rubbery I even had a big piece of Cartledge in one taco. The rice tastes like it's from a bag and I'm guessing the refried beans were also because they were a liquid. in fact they fell through the holes in a fork. I've had better tasting beans at my child's elementary school next to a crispito. The tortillas are also not fresh which was disappointing. All in all I went home and am pretty sure I got food poisoning. I won't be back avoid this place. read more

I really wanted to love this place. We will start with the good; The salsa bar is fire, the chips are authentic, my fish taco was really good and so was my horchata. But, I think they have a hard time finding staff. The first time we went we waited 40 minutes for our 6 tacos.. they brought us 5 and it took 20 more minutes just to get the one they forgot. The second time we went our waitress forgot our drinks and our food wasn't as good as the first time, the food was cold. Perhaps they can find some better help. I'll probably go again in the next few months and take it to go, maybe it's just growing pains. read more
