We stopped in on a Saturday at noon after reading reviews on yelp, and were surprised that the…read moreplace was empty, except for one other couple, standing and waiting for a takeout order. My husband ordered the ribs and okra, and I got a shrimp po boy sandwich with collard greens. The young man at the register was very helpful & efficient, and we quickly found a table. I needed to use the restroom while I waited for our order, but a sign on a door in the corner said 'out of order' so sadly, no bathroom. The young man from the register soon brought out our order, and we were happy! I grew up with peppery collards on the south side of Chicago, and man! I was surprised to have such a good cup in KS! They were hot, so tender & peppered, and the meat in them was lean & juicy. My po boy had 5 shrimp- almost too many to fit into the roll, but they were breaded & fried, hot & crispy. The roll was fresh & well- stocked with tomato, lettuce & mayo. There is a free 'sample' of coleslaw given on each order it seems, but I did not care for mine. My husband really enjoyed his ribs; they weee smoky & tender and the portion was good. The okra was kind of a bummer; clearly an out-of-the-frozen bag kind, but he said it was clear the kitchen had prioritized the ribs, which were awesome. We were sad to see a lack of variety in sauce, but what we did have was delightful. I highly recommend this place, and will likely be back soon, just for the collards!

Was downtown Topeka working and had seen reviews on JRock so wanted to try them out. I had 2 meat…read morecombo pulled pork and hot links with baked beans. They throw in a small sample of their coleslaw (teaser lol) the food was great all though I'd preferred the hot links to have more of a bite. Their house sauce had a great flavor again for me I like heat and they only had a bottle of Texas Pete hot sausage to spice it up. Now the baked beans had bacon and was not too sweet and definitely not bland I actually enjoyed them as normally beans can overpower one way or the other. For someone who normally will not eat coleslaw I tried it and polished the teaser off. Very good. Do wished they did brisket but they do have burnt ends. Staff were friendly and had suggestions which were helpful. They put their efforts into the food which I'll be back for but the facility could use a refresh but for me if it means shorting on the love n care they give the food they cook I'm good with the facility

While visiting family in Kansas, my dad, stepmom, and I decided to have breakfast at Cracker…read moreBarrel. I'm a big fan of this restaurant, so I was excited to see if there were any differences in the service or atmosphere since this was my first time visiting a location in another state. As soon as I looked at the menu, I knew exactly what I wanted. They had these new campfire meals that looked so good! I wanted the one with the beef, carrots, potatoes, and corn. When our server came over, I tried to place my order, but she asked if it was 11:00 a.m. yet. Her response caught me off guard because I honestly didn't know what time it was. I checked my phone and saw it was only 10:40. She then asked what I'd like instead, so I told her I needed another minute to look over the menu. I understand the campfire meals weren't available until 11:00, but I feel like the situation could have been handled a little more warmly. It made the interaction feel a bit awkward, and for a moment I considered waiting the extra 20 minutes because I had my heart set on trying one of the new menu items. Since it was my dad's birthday, though, I didn't want to hold everyone up, so I ordered the Momma's French Toast Breakfast with eggs and bacon instead. The food was good, and overall I had a pleasant visit. As always, the gift shop was full of cute items, although I didn't end up buying anything this time. My only real complaint was the service. I always appreciate friendly, welcoming customer service, and this visit just felt a little lacking in that department.

El Centenario is pretty decent Mexican food in Topeka…read more I've been to El Centenario a half-dozen times. It helps that it is just a couple blocks away from work, it's easy to get a consensus among co-workers as a place to go for lunch, and it has had good and consistent food that comes out pretty speedy. I know that the menu is filled with diverse items, but I keep gravitating to the same lunch item over and over -- 1 taco, 1 burrito, and refried beans. It's not an exciting lunch, but it's remarkably affordable (~$6!) and it is very filling. El Centenario also plys you with heaping baskets of tortilla chips and salsa. My recommendation -- request the salsa picante. It's a spicy ranchera-style sauce, it has a rather spicy pepper bite, but I've gotten to the point that I will eat chips with it spooned over the top, while one of my coworkers mixes some of the spicy salsa into her bowl of regular salsa. I won't say that El Centenario is the most authentic Mexican restaurant, but it does fit solidly into the current concepts for TexMex / Mexican that is run and staffed by Latin-Americans. Considering some of the other "Mexican" food in Topeka, it's about as authentic as you are going to get without heading over to the taquerias on the east side.
