My go to item here is their breakfast burritos. They're available from 8 am - 12 pm everyday. They already have a very minor kick of spice to it if you're not too into spicy food. I like to add their green salsa for extra spice and flavor. Their red salsa is the spiciest but the flavor of that red salsa isn't the best. What I like to do is mix it with the green salsa so I can get that extra spicy that I'm looking for and also a nice flavor of salsa from the green. They have a variety of salsa at their salsa bar. Coming from LA, standards for Mexican food are probably pretty high. This was pretty good! Like 85% of the quality you can get in SoCal! Service was nice and friendly, and good atmosphere with the Latin music blasting over the speakers. Pretty good food, I had the asada burrito burrito. Large burrito and not bad flavor I think there are better asada burritos in the area. I think I will go back and try there tacos which looked really good, severs were friendly and food came verily quickly. Came here on a Tuesday night with a few girlfriends. They have plenty of seating so we ordered to eat there. The food was delicious and honestly rivaled some of the Mexican food I have eating all my life while living in LA. My The only issue was the food (two tacos took over 25 minutes. My friends said that wasn't normal and normally it takes around 10 minutes. I come to this area a lot so I will give it another go and hopefully don't have to wait as long. There are few places that I catch myself returning to over and over again, and this is probably my number 1! I have been here at minimum once a month for the last year and the food is consistently fresh and flavorful. The vegan tacos and vegan and gluten free, but I add cheese to them. The roasted jalapeños that you can grab by the salsa bar add even more flavor to the meal. I recommend the salsa verde that is a yellow green color with the jalapeños on your tacos! The burritos are MASSIVE and my spouse can't stop ordering the barbacoa. You could easily make one burrito into two meals. The cucumber agua Fresca is my absolute favorite that I have tried, and is the perfect post hike hydration. I do recommend ordering online if you are in a rush on a weekend evening as they can become incredibly busy and table space is hard to come by- for a good reason!! read more

I like the menu written on the black chalk board with all of the different ways a person can order tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and anything else. The staff is really kind and nice. They have excellent customer service. I enjoy the salsa bar. The first time I went, I ordered the Carne Asada burrito with no beans. I did not get a receipt so I had to guess what number I was because they were busy and I accidentally grabbed someone's burrito because it had beans in it. The quality of the burrito was still good even with the beans. The second time I went, I ordered the Carne Asada quesadilla. It was seasoned so well and delicious. I went to Metate for lunch again today--on a bank holiday with unlimited time to go further. There aren't many reasons I brave the city of Aurora's civil engineers' sadistic I-225 crossings. They resemble the Great Wall of China, keeping Denverites at bay. Metate is worth enduring the fecklessly timed traffic lights on 6th, Alameda, and Mississippi. But I digress. My last review here came several years ago. This place deserves another star. While the asada, pastor, carnitas, barbacoa, and shrimp tacos can't lose, new items have been on my plate lately. The menu's expanded nicely. Two weeks ago, enchiladas verdes came Mexican-style w asadero and verde sauce. No green chile, No yellow cheese. Just delicious. Today, birria tacos took sabroso to new heights. Birria is trendy and found all over the Metro. I can't say I've had better. Let me start by saying this place does have some good food , Tonight, they fell short , and for me really shows that although you're spending hard earned money - some businesses , like this one, don't not value their customers. I spent $100 , and one of my buche tacos was just disgusting, to the point that I gagged and spit it out, it tasted off and as someone who eats buche regularly it shouldn't have tasted the way it did. We kindly asked the cashier if there was anything that could be done and she went into the back to speak to whomever was in charge . The solution - nothing , too bad so sad & in to the trash it went . This is the second time we have come to Tacos El Metate and unfortunately we did not have as good of an experience this time as we did on our first visit. Last time we went with a quesadilla...this time we decided to try their asada fries. They were very busy on a Sunday at lunchtime and it took quite a while for our food to come out compared to others, but we figured it was because of the french fries as opposed to basic street tacos. However, after getting our fries we were confused as to why it took so long. At first the presentation was nice and we were excited. After taking our first few bites however, we realized that the fries were very undercooked, it was swimming in a not-so-flavorful cheese sauce which didn't help the texture of the fries at all, and there was not nearly enough asada to offset the ocean of cheese. It is rare that we don't just power thru and eat our meal...but neither myself or my son could bring ourselves to eat more than half the basket...and that was with us starving and sharing. I'm not sure if we will be back anytime soon, and if we do go back, we will make sure to just get safer choice of street tacos. read more

Closest thing I have found to compare to Southern California Mexican since moving here

I've been going to this place over the past 6-7 years and it has progressively gotten worse and I was sure to take pics before throwing my food away. Whenever I've gone, I've ordered the same items (either Carne asada fries, with shredded cheese not nacho; camaron tacos or asada tacos). I can't even tell you how disappointed I am. The fries were limp, so either undercooked or an old batch of fries that they had sitting. The tacos were literally cold. I let them know the time of pickup (25 minutes out), but the food had been so cold, it seemed like it was made immediately with stuff that had already been cooked. I had a feeling I should've just cooked, but this will be my last time. I had a meeting scheduled for here next week and I can't have my name attached to this experience. Every time I order online I get the same experience. Something always incorrect in my order. In the past I let it be but tonight I decided to take my order back after picking up not even 5 minutes after to see if they could correct it for me but as soon as I arrived and I informed the cashier that one of my orders was incorrect in a kind manner and presented the receipt and the order that was incorrect. I had order 2 shrimp tacos and 1 fish taco plain only but instead of plain they put sour cream. Not a big deal really but I didn't think it was going to be such a problem if I took them back for them to correct or switch them out. The cashier proceeded to look at my receipt with my order and proceeded to rudely state that they had got the order right and that I brought the wrong one which threw me off because the rest of my order was correct but mine was the only one that was incorrect hence why I came back with mine. I apologized for the confusion and for coming back but assured them that mine was the only one incorrect since I only wanted them plain but the cashier again rudely said that on their system it didn't say that even though it was on their receipt that came with my order? The cashier looked like she didn't want to keep going back and forth which I guess prompted her to snatch the box out of my hand and told me that they were going to fix it for me. I thought at that point that the ordeal was over until they gave me the order incorrect again.... This time with only 2 fish tacos when my order was 1 fish and 2 shrimp tacos. At that point I decided to just leave since i didn't want to deal with the rude staff that clearly instead of fixing my issue they did it their way. So in conclusion instead of paying for 3 overpriced tacos that weren't made correctly I ended up paying for 2 overpriced tacos that weren't made still made incorrectly read more

The area I was working out of for the week recommended I give this place a try after mentioning that I enjoyed Birria tacos. I'm glad I arrived when I did before place started to get busy just a little past 1100. The service was excellent and they were patient with me since it was my first time. My tacos were amazing, but I wish they would have offered me a fountain cup instead the large coke in a bottle, but that could have been on me. Place is relatively clean and service is quick and friendly. It can get pretty busy during the dinner rush so keep that in mind. The tacos were very flavorful. I had a Barbacoa , Al Pastor, Camaron, and an asada. All tasty. And all the salsas were so good. Hard to choose a favorite. Quick service also. My husband ordered Carne Asada french fries, they were super soggy. I'm not sure if it's because we added green chili (which I didn't taste) but we also didn't have queso on it- luckily I noticed it and asked for some and they gave us some on the side but the queso also was pretty flavorless and very watery. His quesadilla was decent, the chicken was a little dry. But the tacos are bomb, finally found a good taco place, there's a million options I feel like in Denver but coming from Houston I really enjoy Tex-Mex and haven't really found any good tacos here and I've tried quite a few places. So glad to have found a place, and just down the street. Would definitely recommend the tacos. read more
