I asked a local about the best Mexican restaurant in the area and she said, Los Carboncitos. There are tons of Mexican restaurants in the Denver metro area and they are all about the same, and all are generally OK. She was right about the food, Los Carboncitos has great food, but my findings were mixed. I'll start with the positive about Los Carboncitos in case you don't feel like reading my rant. I had the smothered al pastor burrito and it was the BEST I've ever had in my life, anywhere. Holy smokes! I was blown away by how good it was...and the price was fair, too, $13.98 for the smothered version and $10.99 for the non-smothered. We were there on a Friday night and there were hardly any people there at all. After you finish reading my review, you'll probably know why. There are no booths, but there is plenty of table seating. I mean lots, along with lots of serving staff. Rant starts here: -The chips and salsa. Great presentation and a served with a selection of five sauces. The problem is, they are all very hot. Not a mild or medium one in the bunch. We couldn't enjoy them at all because the heat burned our tongues. No fun. -The service. Not good at all. Aside from the getting our chips and salsa really fast, we had to summon a server for every step of the process. It wasn't busy at all. The servers were pretty much just all talking with each other and had no sense of urgency or caring about providing good service. -The music is so loud that it's not easy to carry on a conversation. No reason it has to be so loud. It's not a party bar and it makes talking with the server all the more difficult. -Communication is a real problem and the loud music only makes it even worse. I was with a native Spanish speaker. I can speak some limited Spanish but it wasn't good enough to communicate even simple things. I have traveled in rural Mexico and Guatemala and had a much easier time communicating at restaurants there than at this restaurant. Even my father, a native Spanish speaker, could not communicate with the servers well. He asked for four sopapillas and ended up with two servings of four sopapillas. My dad replied in Spanish we only wanted four total and our server just smiled and chuckled and made no attempt to make things right. I feel ripped off but it was obvious they had no intention of correcting their error. -The sopapillas were not good at all and they were overpriced. They aren't puffy and light like they are supposed to be, they are just fried bread with sugar on top. To add insult to injury, we had to pay double for them. Skip the sopapillas. -No iced tea on the menu! What? Rant over, now the conclusion: Unless you speak super good Spanish or point directly at the menu, communication will be a problem. Google Translate won't work because the music is too loud. I suggest ordering online and doing take-out instead of dine-in to avoid communication errors. The burrito I had was the best ever! I might try it again when I'm in town, but I will definitely not dine in again. They really need to work on their customer service. It's non-existent at this restaurant. The food is great, though, except for the sopapillas. read more

The images of delicious food can be deceiving. The food is a solid 3; the rating is due to the following; the cheesy greasy watered down cheese was terrible. Why so watery who knows. The tlacoyos were simply ok, nothing to brag home about. Needed some extra cheese and maybe some white Mexican cream. They were brought out cold. The gorditas were pretty good. Crunchy crust , really well cooked chicken and a lot more food than the picture on the menu. The tacos were pretty good. I do like and appreciate the home made taco to me this is probably what gave the food the extra star. The meat was cooked really well with hot flavor. The salsas are very unique and spicy. Our waitress, oh boy she was right in the middle. It was her first day working there, we had to ask her for every little thing such as forks, knife, napkins. Can we please have more water as you seen the empty cups on the table. Room for improvement there for sure. And the ambiance was last cause literally was so damn hot inside, they had a fan on and the door wide open . The fan was conveniently just for 3 tables there and only one for a two room style restaurant. The bathroom was actually pretty one and a single stall. I honestly didn't know what to expect when my husband, friend, and I went here. My husband has been missing Socal Mexican food and my friend found this place. Now its not Socal Mexican food, but the food was still pretty great. Definitely looked like locals eat here.. fairly large space for this restaurant- the setup was kind of weird and they has telemundo playing.. but thats ok.. felt authentic haha. I've never heard or seen huaraches, but thank goodness there was a picture menu because that looked really good! I ordered the one with carne asada and bacon.. it was AMAZING. My husband had their beef burrito and it was massive. He really liked the burrito and we definitely left with full bellies. It's not socal Mexican food but it's still damn good. I had it before and they were so good I'm not sure what happened I ordered two shrimp tacos and smothered steak burrito and the tortilla from the shrimp tacos were super hard and dry not fresh . This is the 3rd Location of Los Carboncitos in town that we have been to. This recent visit was on Sunday August 3rd 2014. After running some errands, Hubs and I decide to head to this establishment for a Late Lunch, EARLY Dinner. Time was about 16:30hrs. Man, when we came at that hour, this place is indeed jam packed. We managed to find seats all the way back on the Right Wing of this establishment. Once seated, we realized, there are The Menu is ALREADY "lay" on the Table itself. I feel a little odd about this, but just go with the flow. From the Menu, I opt for the following items : * 1 Taco Tripa ($2.00) * 1 Taco Lengua ($2.00) * 1 Taco Cabeza ($1.50) While Hubs opt to have the following items : * 4 Tacos Bistec ($6.00) * 1 Burrito Bistec Smothered ($6.75) * 1 Mexican Soda ($2.50) The lovely staff brought out the Complimentary Chips and Salsa while we wait for our order to be ready. Hubs like the Salsa, and Hubs said, it tasted "home-made"... Once the Complimentary Chips were gone, the Staff comes back with another Plate of Complimentary Chips. Man, those Chips are indeed addictive perhaps so, we were hungry. Our order was sent to our table after like a few minutes of waiting about 16:50hrs ish. The Taco meat though plenty, its doable. I am OK with everything I had. The Tripa is crunchy. Err, I cannot differentiate between Lengua and Cabeza for this time around, coz both meats looks the same but have different flavors and its definitely tender. Hubs once again like all the 4 salsa variety that this establishment did offer. The Burrito Bistec comes with Rice and Beans in it, which Hubs like it a lot. All in all 3.5 stars for this establishment and we don't mind returning when needed. Call ahead in case they close early during their operation hours. It seems that during Thursdays thru Saturdays this establishment offer LATE EATS till 1 am or so. SCORE!! Left this establishment at 17:10hrs. While I love the food, over half of the workers were either not wearing a mask or wearing it inappropriately. The lady behind the bar had no mask whatsoever. The other servers wore their mask either below their nose or completely below their chin. Customers were also walking around freely without a mask and nobody addressed this issue. In a pandemic I feel like this behavior is not only widly unacceptable but also shows this establishment only cares about money and not the health of it's customers. If you are not enforcing a state wide mask policy, what makes us think you are cleaning up to par? I would absolutely not step foot in this establishmet. read more

Have only had carry out but the carryout has been fantastic. Try the asada huarache, seriously go now and try it. The tacos are great too. The meat is leaner and better quality than many of the competitors in the area which is a huge plus for me and why I've given up on other places that are closer to my office where we frequently order out for lunch. We were lucky enough to go on Taco Tuesday - with $2.50 tacos! And even better was that they were delicious! The fish taco was our favorite with the pork coming in a close second. Not only was service horrifically slow and scattered, but the food was lackluster and E's marg was made with rum. B ordered the sopa azteca, which was lukewarm. Tacos were mostly bland - the meat was very underseasoned and only helped slightly by the four sauces brought to the table. The torta de milanesa was passable but incredibly salty. I've never spent a worse $48 (for 4) in my life. Plus, watch out on your receipt - our waitress tipped herself 10% on our bill for our table of 4. We left unsatisfied and stopped at Las Tortugas on our way home for some delicious food to fill the void. If I were you, I'd spend your money elsewhere. It took 15 minutes for a waitress to come. 20 minutes to get the waters we ordered. They made the marg with rum. All of the tacos tasted the same because there was almost no seasoning. Came in for a work lunch on a Friday. It wasn't too busy and the staff were quick to take care of us. The menu was larger than I was expecting, something for everyone. They brought us chips and salsa as well as 4 different sauces. It was a great treat while we were waiting for our food to come, to try the different sauces. My favorite was the creamy green cilantro/lime sauce-it went perfectly with my food. I decided to go with a Huarache since I've never had one and it seemed to be a popular item on the yelp reviews. The steak and cactus one stuck out the most and was a great choice. There was plenty of steak included as well as cactus (I did have to take some of the cactus off--just got too healthy for me I guess). It was delicious and filling. This is definitely something I would get again. My coworkers all got different dishes that also looked very appetizing, like the quesadilla, the smothered burrito, the tacos, and a shrimp plate. Somewhere in the Middle East, something magical occurred when Gyros was invented. The spit-cooked Lamb with a little mystery involved in the preparation of it may invoke gastrointestinal terror in some but I am not to be counted among them. But while the Lamb is a tasty animal, the poor Lamb also has serious competition. And in a war of deliciousness, Lamb stands little chance against Pig. Sadly, people don't eat a lot of Pork in the Middle East for various cultural reasons. But knowledge of how tasty Pork is has proven difficult to restrain. So at some point someone got smart, got the hell out of the Middle East and moved to Mexico, probably just so they could start cooking Pork in the same way that you cook Gyros. And that's when something magical happened all over again, and that something is called Al Pastor. I've had a now months-long tradition of being hungover on Monday mornings due to various lifestyle choices that I won't go into right now. All I will say is that bad decisions are fun. Just like Gyro meat cures what ails me at 2 AM on a Sunday morning, my new traditions have Al Pastor treating those same conditions on Monday mornings. So thank goodness some of the best Mexican restaurants in town are open for breakfast. And that's where Los Carboncitos came to my rescue. I had a wonderful Al Pastor plate, with a stack of corn tortillas. Their 4 complimentary salsas make quite the impression and are great to throw onto your entree, too. Although I will say that none of their salsas really stood out as my favorite, and I liked the tomatillo the least. This place is easy to miss and very nondescript from the outside, but the interior is warm and bright, and way more inviting than you might expect. The service was great. Located in a strange strip mall that looks more like an office park, Los Carboncitos in Aurora offers virtually the same experience that you'd receive in the Denver locations, including the same menu, the same cheerful and attentive service, the same house-made corn tortillas, the same four salsa varieties and even the same signature yellow and orange interior. What differs about this location is the offering of free tostada chips to sample the salsas. I did notice that the salsas here were significantly more mild than their sister store at Pecos, though just as flavorful. Also unique to this location is the availability of cerveza. Que bueno! I wonder if the availability of beer at this location says anything about the reported bureaucratic hurdles to obtain a liquor license in the City of Denver. Maybe? Awesome new discovery. I can't believe somebody here actually complained that the waitresses barely knew English. This is a great, authentic, northern Mexican joint with phenomenal food and the best tacos. The horchata to drink is always great, the tacos are my favorite in Denver so far and I've had the tacos at quite a few places, and the 4 sauces that they bring out with every meal are on point. It doesn't bother me that there's a wait sometimes, it doesn't bother me that most of the time I'm the only gringo in the place, and it doesn't bother me that the bathroom is basic. It reminds me of Mexico and I love it. The snobbish white people complaining here can go eat at chipotle, means less of a wait for me. read more

I had never had a huaraches until I ate here. They are the most amazing thing ever. I live that they have many meat options, all of them are flavorful and lean. I enjoy that you can customize them with your salsas and toppings. Be careful! Some of the salsas can be a bit spicier than expected. I am hooked on these but I really want to try other dishes. The staff is always friendly and the portions are perfect. This is one of the best authentic Mexican restaurants in town. I'm hooked. I actually really like this place. Probably one of the most authentic locations in the Denver area. I've had all of tacos and the al pastor can stand alone. I am a sauce guy though and I can't help but note that the plethora of tasty salsa that come with these dishes come with are worth mentioning. Lots of flavor. The tostadas civiche was also amazing!
