I think there's a time and place for Mexican bar food, and this may be my favorite spot of all time for that plunge of tasty pleasures. So there I was walking downtown and decided I should get a taco. It had been a while since I'd been to El Machin. Today was the day! So there I was walking up to the kitchen to decide what to order. And there they were - the two cooks. They were in the kitchen right in the prep area. They were both eating lunch. Bowls of something. Just standing there eating in the food prep area. As a certified food handler, I know that it is illegal to eat in the food prep area. Full stop. It's also required that you wash your hands after eating and before returning to work. That's impossible if you're eating in the food prep area. I am very curious, and almost sat down to watch, if the two cooks were going to wash their hands when the next customer walked up. Sad. The tacos are actually quite tasty, but WASH YER PAWS and don't eat in the kitchen please. read more

We recently moved here from California (for school), and it has been ROUGH. The food in this town is nothing like what we're used to. We've tried every Mexican joint in this town and they all served American-Mexican food. I'm talking crispy tacos and ground beef with taco seasoning, lettuce, cheese, and sour cream. Don't get me wrong, there's a time and a place for that (it's called Taco Bell). But if you want authentic California-style Mexican food -like something you'd find in San Diego or LA -then this is the place. The pastor is heavenly, the asada is a perfectly grilled and tender, and even the chicken (shredded not grilled) is a solid choice! The ambiance, however, is downright strange. It's a dive bar. You've got to be 21 to enter. But they close at 9pm. So it's a bar that acts like a restaurant. It smells funny inside (like all dive bars do), the TVs are loud, the lights are dim, lots of neon, there are slot machines, and the bartender serves you. Honestly, it attracts a mixed crowd. We typically see day drinkers and bar flies lining the bar and gambling on the machines, and regular folks coming in for food. If the food wasn't so good, it's definitely not somewhere I would choose to go. But it's the only decent tacos in Corvallis, so I come weekly. read more

Definitely satisfies a craving. I usually go for the tacos, asada and al pastor. Reasonably priced and simply delicious. They are usually pretty timely as well. I really like their creamy avocado sauce and their verde. It's a must stop for me next time I'm in town! I also appreciate that the limes are always juicy. We ordered 6 tacos(3.50 each) and one $6 horchata. She swore the total for 6 tacos and the drink was $57. She even looked at me and said"yes, 6 tacos for $57"I don't think she liked the fact that I asked if the price was correct, since she didn't correct the order. Finally I found great Mexican food in corvallis. I tried a pollo torta and chorizo taco. The meat on everything was cooked to perfection. Tender and flavorful! The tacos were a highlight. Simple and flavorful. My husband and daughter had the burrito and they were well proportioned. The torta was absolutely fantastic. The was bread soft and fresh and the whole sandwich was perfect. I wouldn't change a thing. We ordered at the food truck and sat at the table outside while we ate. The food was delivered to us and she even brought out plates, napkins and a fantastic variety of about 6 little hot sauces. They all had some zing to them and tasted fresh and authentic. I really love that orange garlic sauce. So good! The only reason I rate it 4 stars is because we would have liked to sit indoors. We would have spent more money had we been able to order a beer with our food. However, we were dining with our 11 year old daughter and minors are not allowed inside. I assume it's a licensing issue. Once it's resolved, I will update my review to 5 stars. The other issue was the table we sat at was a bit dirty and there was only one table. I could tell other people wanted to sit at the table too as I overheard them mention it. We made space to share the table with them but they opted to just leave after their food was ready. An additional table would have been a bit more comfortable along with an umbrella. But I'm really nitpicking here. We had a fantastic meal and will be back many times over! read more
