We had a pretty large group, about 10 people and they were able to accommodate all of us inside by pushing some tables together. I had the Orden de Tacos and it was really good. The cilantro, onions, and guacamole tasted fresh. Look for the green and red hot sauces, they made the food taste even better. For me, I especially like the green hot sauce. As you pull up in an old somewhat run down shopping strip style stores there it sits. You will ask yourself as I did "is this the right spot"? Answer YES LOL. The two girls in side were so friendly and I felt like I was in Mexico again and I was excited and glad to be there. On that day for whatever reason they only had tacos available which was fine with me because that is what I was craving. I wanted legit tacos how I love them with just steak, onions and cilantro with a squeeze of lime over it all and some salsa for kick. OMG it was all that and absolutely delicious!!! She warned me the salsa is hot. I said I'm fine I love spice she said yeah but this has some kick. The man in me said "please I am bullet proof" in my internal monologue! LOL I open up the container and there they were "AHHHH" (insert angelic music and rays of light) LOL.) beautiful authentic tacos! Then I saw the neon red sauce in a small container. I didn't see skulls and crossbones so felt safe LOL. I put some on my first taco said a prayer and dove in. I would like to report it has kick for sure but in the right dose is a perfect compliment to the perfection that was in that tortilla! Do not treat this like Taco Bell hot sauce or after removing the enamel off your teeth it will change your religion!! LOL I highly recommend when you are near to stop in and get some steak tacos! Really easy to find, about two miles off 75. They are in a strip mall with their name on the sign post along the street. Plentiful parking, but it's set up as one way lanes with angled parking. If you can easily pull into a spot, you are going the right way. Inside is bright, with yellow walls and a lot of colorful paintings. There are booths and tables. It seems mostly set up for parties of four or less. They can move tables easily though, without having people sit in the aisles. The menu is primarily Spanish, but the English translation is on the right side. There is a large selection and the different type fonts make it a bit hard to read. Take your time and you will be rewarded with some great choices. For lunch, we had several tortas, the Cubano, Columbiano, and Argentine. We also tried the enchiladas, tostada, chili relleno, and tacos. The tortilla chips to start were fine. The salsa is smooth and flavorful with small pieces of onion and cilantro visible. Not exceptional, but a decent start. The Columbiano had two kinds of sausage, chorzo and something like a hot dog. The chorizo was outstanding. I despise greasy chorizo, and this was moist and so very flavorful, without any grease. Really outstanding. The Argentine was flavorful with heat from jalapeno slices. The Cubano was gone before I got a chance to sample it, with the only comment being "Wow, that was good!". The enchilada was very good, with good corn flavor and a smooth cheese on top. The tostada was also good without getting soggy. The chili relleno was very well done, with a crisp breading and flavorful filling. Finally, the tripa taco was excellent. The tripa was fried crispy with a light seasoning. The addition of only onion and cilantro, with a squeeze of lime juice, made an excellent addition to the main dish. I would order several for lunch and be very happy. The sauces are red, green (tomatillo based) and a creamy green (avocado based). All are spicy, but not over the top. Each makes a solid flavor addition to different dishes. Service was efficient and prices are fine. Based on what we had this trip, I feel a need to go back as often as possible to try more of their menu. It may take awhile to work through it, but I'm willing to make the sacrifice. read more

It's been awhile since I first reviewed this place. I've been back several times since I wrote that review and I can say this place has only gotten better, if that's possible. First off, let me tell you that you must, absolutely must get the mango agua fresca. I'm drinking one right now as I write this review. It's maybe the best agua fresca I've ever had. Secondly, the tacos are amazing! I think they may make the tortillas in-house. They fill those babies up with tons of meat, onions and cilantro. They are only $2 each. Taco hack: take one of the two tortillas, split the fillings and you have not one, but two tacos! Their salsa and hot sauces are so yummy. I love the green sauce with the creamy avocado sauce. Yum!!! The gorditas are jamming too. Imagine a stuffed shell with just a bit of crunch. Again, they are packed full of meat. The staff are super nice and helpful. Yes, someone speaks English and the menus are in English and Spanish. This is a legit Mexican food place, in just a strip mall on Lee Highway/Brainerd Road area. This was the quickest and tastiest bite I could've asked for (and pretty cheap too). I had tacos al pastor $2 each, you can build your own tacos too. I also had tacos with pork belly and it was not my favorite, it was a soggy kind of pork rind. The al pastor have been the best I have ever had, very fresh, the corn tortilla was so fresh soft but also crunchy on the edges, cilantro, onions and pineapple YUM! We also ordered the carne molida (ground beef tostadas) which had a very decent amount of beef for $2.50 each. Definitely coming back to try more items on the menu. Don't come to this place if you're looking for 5 star or fine dining service, this is a place where you come because food is gonna be good no matter what. read more

What a nice surprise eating in Tacos El Cuñao was tonight! I haven't really found much Mexican cuisine in Chattanooga that I would eat twice, but this place definitely qualifies. It's a small spot tucked between a couple of Spanish markets on Lee Hwy. Great decor, Spanish programming on the TV in the background which streams through an interesting mix of commercials, news and music. The decor and atmosphere give it a food truck feel. I went wth a group of about 10-12 and our waitress was very polite and accommodating. She never looked flustered and no one's order was incorrect. She was patient and answered all of our questions. I was so happy when I saw the menu: Spanish and English and pictures galore! An assortment of meats, dishes, and combination plates. I got a plate which included a taco (steak), a burrito (chicken), and a chile relleno (chicken). Very fresh ingredients; the tortillas were freshly fried and the steak was seasoned well with a dusting of cilantro. Simple and to the point. The burrito tortilla had a faint accent of the grill which was a nice complement to the chicken and cheese. It wasn't overloaded with cheese, which I really appreciate, and the cheese was flavorful. I could actually taste it now and again in the burrito. I'm annoyed when other "Mexican" restaurants put a pound of flavorless cheese on top of all of their dishes. I was most surprised by the chile relleno. I've never had one so I didn't know what to expect, but I was surprised at how creamy it was. The sauces have plenty of flavor and are quite distinct from each other. The avocado one is more mild and smooth while the other two have a more pronounced heat. Good salsa, too! After a year of searching for good tacos, I just tried **Tacos El Cuñao** on Lee Highway. I had noticed it in passing the other day and figured it looked genuine enough with its cute little aircraft hangar dining area and food truck kitchen. Ordering at the window of their truck, the mouth watering smell made me anxious to figure out what I wanted to order from their menu, which included a wide selection of authentic meats. As I ordered, the service was excellent, and I was impressed by the kind demeanor of the cooks and the hostess at the window. The food, which my family of 5 had ordered a lot of, was cooked up much faster than I had expected. After the brief wait, we got our food from the window and brought it back to sit down and eat. We were shocked by the authentic, full, and unique flavor of each dish we had ordered. From Lengua and Pollo tacos (Beef tongue and Chicken) to Asada Gorditas (steak), each meal was exquisitely cooked to tender perfection. The green salsa excellenty complimented the chicken dishes, while I prefered the red salsa with the steak. Everything we were served was excellent, and I'd highly recommend the beef tongue to anyone who has never tried (or maybe never even heard) of it before! I moved here from the California/Mexico border, and figured I'd never find Mexican food as good as what I'd become accustomed to in the southwest. However, I can confidently say that this beats most, if not everything, that I've ever had throughout the entirety of the west, and is by far and wide the best I've ever had further east than Arizona. Please, support them at 713 S. Lee Highway in Cleveland 37312! They also have a location in Chattanooga 37421, 5813 Lee Highway. This was a wonderful culinary and customer experience, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone seeking out an authentic experience as I was, as this business certainly deserves your patronage! P.S. Our Yelp-meister has declared 2016 'The Year of the Taco' here in 'nooga. This is fitting, as Chattanooga certainly has a plethora of Mexican-patterned eateries. They spring up as quickly as wild mushrooms, and just as quickly often disappear, leaving their garish 'authentic' paint-schemes behind, another casualty of the local Restaurant Wars. "Authentic" is an over-used and misapplied word, especially when applied to latin-based eateries. Folks: It takes more than a bright paint scheme, chunky-primitive furniture, and a few knick-knacks on the walls to successfully equate authenticity, unless one's definition of authenticity is founded in border towns or that trip to Cancun. Using such a template as an all-encompassing definition of "authenticity" equates using Dollywood as a measure of 'American Authenticity' which may be correct/valid when compared to your home base, but on the whole.....not so much. Some of the most memorable meals I've ever enjoyed were in interior Mexican towns, sans the bright paint, the wall bling, and the over-loud Mariachi tunes. Mom & Pop places, quiet save for the soft conversations of patrons and the trickle of the fountain under the ubiquitous VOG. Authenticity has many templates: the lower barrio might be yours, but it's only one template of a wonderfully diverse and culturally rich culture that is central America. Authentic could be half a cow swinging in a tree with portions sliced and quickly wrapped in yesterday's newspaper while you wait, or linen & crystal in a softly illuminated venue. I've enjoyed both extremes, and both were 'authentic'. So we return to 'nooga; and this month's Taco venue. It's a bit more than a taco place, which is unfortunate, for in being 'more' it fails miserably. One approaches any meal with expectations, and should such not be met, stars begin to fall. The dining area was overly warm, the effect of which could have been mitigated by a nice, cold beer. BUT WAIT: no beer available. Imagine no breadsticks at Olive Garden, no pepperoni or mushrooms for a pizza, or buns at Five Guys! Imagine a star falling into a sea of disappointment. Plan B: Tea! Guess what? NO sweet tea! And another star falls. They actually had water available, though. And a straw. My meal, a #9 arrived in due time. #9 consisted of an over-stuffed, doughy beef burrito containing a generous portion of onions. A drizzle of a (possibly) cheese substance 'garnished' this abomination. The burrito displayed poorly, and tasted in proportion. Accompanying my burrito was an over-cooked chili relleno. The pepper was stuffed with Monterey Jack, not exactly traditional, but then the greasy breading wasn't exactly traditional, either. The grease imparted a not so subtle (or appreciated) after-taste to each and every bite, promising reprises as my after-dinner evening unfolded. These items were accompanied by a bed of starchy rice and a splat of refried beans. Very authentic and imaginative...sigh. So another star drops, hissing and spewing into the dark sea of another 'authentic' meal gone awry. It's all about the food. And in this instance, a frozen tex-mex in the comfort and privacy of my home would have tasted MUCH better! read more

Sopas are fantastic, as are the tostadas and they are served Mexican style with simple lettuce, onion, and tomato. Before you dig in, ask for the salsa they keep in the cooler behind the bar, and yes: those are habaneros on the pico de gallo bar. I love me some good Mexican cuisine and this place hit the spot. Tacos El Cunao is located off Lee highway across from the Toyota dealership in a plaza with many Hispanic shops. When you first walk in, you are bombarded with many bright colors and over decorated decors everywhere. I proceeded to walk to the front and was informed i could sit for dine in. Everyone that was in the restaurant was Hispanic so i take that as a good sign. My server spoke little to no English so thankfully i spoke some Spanish so it made the ordering a little easier. I opted for the al pastor sope and barbacoa taco. Both costing me only $2 a piece. I was offered chips And salsa which i gladly accepted, and the chips were nice and hot. My server also brought me 3 different types of salsa in addition to my chip salsa ranging from greens to red. I prefer my chip salsa the best because it was light and tangy how i like it. The others were more watered down and spicier then what i fancy for. When my food came, they were massive. I'm glad my order for the menudo was shot down with a no because they were out for the day because these two alone was plenty of food. It was topped high with fresh onion, cilantro, and lots of meat! The sope shell and tortilla for the taco was thicker then i normally would like it, but good nonetheless. The al pastor did not taste seasoned like I'm use to when i was in California but more like shredded pork. The barbacoa was delicious and cooked perfectly. Overall i enjoyed it and believe it is some pretty authentic cuisine. I can't wait to come back and try more menu items. read more

I've had lots of different tacos in this area, but the corn tortillas that come with the tacos here add a better flavor to the already really great seasoned meat. I may try them a second time but this is some sad Mexican food. Got the 3 combo of taco, burrito and tamale. All ground beef which to say is sad. Placed my order and the food was out in 5 minutes or less which tends to be a little concerning but ate it with an open mind. The beef was cooked to where it had crunch. No flavor to the meat at all. The only flavor comes from what you put on it. Not good. The taco was worth it for how full it was. However the shell was cold, toppings cold of course so the meat got cold quickly. If you ordered 3 tacos this would be a problem. For one it was ok. Tamale was sad. Burrito has potential but the ground beef just made it sad. Moving on to try the next place. read more
