Located on the busy corner of Shallowford and Lee Highway, it's not easy to get into the parking lot unless you are going east on Lee Highway. Any other direction requires you to chance turning left across six traffic lanes very close to the intersection or going past and doing a U-turn. The third option is to turn left into one of the other strip malls further down Lee and then a couple right turns gets you into the Taco Roc parking lot. Once you get into the lot, there is a decent amount of parking with some adjacent to the building and more across a traffic lane. There are several handicapped spaces near the entrance as well. Walking in, you enter a small waiting area. We were greeted almost immediately and told the hostess we wanted to place a to go order. She quickly gave us menus and told us to sit while we decided what we wanted. If you are dining in, there is a good amount of seating to the right of the waiting area and another smaller area on the left behind a wall. The ordering counter is to the rear of the waiting area. There is a large menu (with pictures) above the counter, but many items in the menu also have photos. This is also where you would pick up take-out orders. There is a salsa bar in the waiting area to the right of the door. We took a sample of each of the six salsas to eat with our food while we were waiting. All had a different flavor and varying levels of heat. One was mild, one was pretty hot, and the others were in between. All were very good and could compliment many different dishes. Our order took 15-20 minutes to be brought to us. It was well packaged in styrofoam containers and nothing spilled on the way home. The Arroz Taco Roc had steak, chicken, and shrimp as a fajita mix. The shrimp was cooked perfectly and was not rubbery even after the drive home. The other proteins were also perfectly cooked and well seasoned. This was an outstanding dish. The Chimichanga was ordered with a mix of steak and chorizo. The protein was well spread throughout the chimichanga along with the other ingredients. The tortilla was not as crispy as typical, but this is most likely due to the delay in the ride home and would not be noticed for those dining in. While the refried beans were nothing special, the rice was surprisingly good. It had an excellent flavor and was cooked perfectly. I added the pico salsa from the salsa bar and could have made that a meal by itself. The menu is pretty extensive and covers almost any possible taste or preference. I look forward to working my way through the menu in many future visits. read more

I've lived in chattanooga for over a decade and just got to Taco Roc. No idea why it took me so long. Restaurants that are in unassuming locations are the best. Everything was really good. The steak in the fiesta burrito was cooked well, but it wasn't hard and rubbery. It's a big burrito and honestly, I wouldn't recommend getting anything else with it unless you want leftovers. The guacamole, cheese sauce and chips are all good. You can tell the guac and chips are definitely made in house. It was still good after a couple days in the fridge, too. Chips aren't too salty but do have a little salt on them, so they aren't bland. You could eat them alone if you wanted. LOVE the salsa bar. I'll obviously be back. Mexican food in Chatanooga has broken away from the Americanized chains to authentic Mexican. Toco Roc is another welcome addition in this trend. They serve authentic Mexican comfort food. Well prepared. You can look at a menu or order off the pictures that are behind the counter. I saw the special tacos and ordered them (bacon added). There were many other options that I can have on another day. The horchata was not overly strong in the cinnamon flavor and good. With a salsa bar in the main part of the restaurant you can customize your meal to your tastes. Watch the pico de gallo, one has pepper added and one doesn't. I've been going to Taco Roc for years and always had the best authentic tacos. been a fan when they first open and was they only authentic street tacos in town or in their area mostly went early in the day mostly before 4pm often when heading home from work or out running errand. however today was quite possibly the last time I will patronize that business. i'be never went this late in the evening (6pm) ordered 7 steak tacos cilanto and onion corn tortilla the usual safe order. got home to the Mrs and proceeded to wolf them down they were completely covered in cilantro more than usual didn't dawn on me at first until we bit into them they were trying to cover up the fact they were mixed with ground beef if they were out of steak simply say so but don't lose business not in this economy especially with more and more competition arising in the area. such a convenient location and always loved the service but your competitors have papusas and authentic tacos too. read more

This place is Authentic Mexican which is a bit of a surprise in Chattanooga. (Although it is a College town..) The decor is very simple. Wooden tables: either booths or 2,4,6, 8 tops with pleather steel chairs. And it's Counter Service although they will deliver to your table. The chips are made with flour tortillas & are hot & lightly salted. They provide a small carafe of regular salsa with the chips which is okay but go to the salsa bar & try the others. They are much better IMHO. The Guacamole is off the charts fabulous! Creamy & chunky with a slight kick. They have an AWESOME salsa & condiment bar with 6 different fresh salsas: 3 Spicy & 3 Mild. They offer pico de gallo, fresh chopped white onion, & chopped parsley as well as pickled & grilled jalapeños! I ordered the Barbacoa pulled spiced beef & the Carnitas pulled pork soft corn tacos. Both were DELISH! They offer bottled beers as well as as Micheladas. Fountain Soft drinks, sweet & unsweetened tea & bottled soft drinks. All the staff were nice, friendly, polite, courteous & efficient. The dining area & bathrooms are clean. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! read more

Just left your restaurant. We've been coming to your restaurant for three years, since we moved here from Illinois. Your staff know us very well and knows our order and even lets us seat ourselves. I ordered a margarita and it was horrible. It was clear, like water, and didn't taste good at all. I have had a lot of margaritas at taco roc and they were always good, today horrible. I didn't drink it and gave to the waitress. When we went to pay, the $7.49 margarita was still on our bill and the guy said "sorry we can't remove alcohol from a bill" which is ridiculous. Had he been smart he would have said "I won't charge you for your guacamole" or whatever, but instead of finding a solution, he was fine with the problem. We will never go back over $7.49 because this was a VERY bad business decision. We have probably been to taco roc around 125 times in the past 3 years, like I said, we are regulars, but will never be back. Horrible and stupid business decision. read more

Most authentic Mexican food in Chattanooga that I've had. They have more variety than most Mexican restaurants. Delicious homemade tortillas and chips! I used to love this place. When my company transferred me to Chattanooga in September 2013, I stayed at a motel up the road for two months and walked to Taco Roc a couple of times per week. I didn't find the staff friendly but loved the salsa bar and food. It seems like the entire staff has turned over and they're much friendlier now. Unfortunately the past couple of times I've gone, I've left somewhat disappointed with the food. I'm either burned out on it or the food isn't as good as it used to be. read more

This restaurant was very interesting as they had the prices up on the board and then when I went to pay for it they charged me more and they just simply said all we're not telling everyone about the price increases until they go to pay and then we get to surprise you with more charges. Amazing food. Good authentic spot. if you're staying at a Hotel near Gunbarrel Rd or are a local in the Hamilton Place area, this spot is worth spending money for. Whenever I recommend authentic Mexican food, I tell people to come here. You know you're in a good place when there's traditional Mexican music playing and the people who serve you are authentic as well. Their food choices vary, though options are limited for vegetarians (if you substitute meat for beans then perhaps more lol). I thoroughly enjoy their steak tacos and tortas, but from what I have heard from others, the fish is amazing too. The reason for 4 stars is that during my recent experience it felt as if the person taking my order was lazy or disinterested. This place has been extremely good but lately they are rude and lazy. They refuse to put anything on a taco except meat. They insist that you use the salsa bar that is out in the open and used by everyone. They even have gone as far to tell me they don't have onions in the kitchen. This place is THE PLACE for authentic mexican food. I always get a few carnitas tacos & 1 sope. The tacos come out plain and you add the toppings on the bar they have in the middle of the restaurant. I LOVE the corn tortillas that they use for them too. The sope comes perfectly crisp with your choosing of meat, feta, tomatoes, and lettuce. It doesn't get more authentic than taco roc. You order in line and then sit and wait for your food. They have entrees as well as single items. The tacos are AWESOME and the portions are very generous even for the largest of appetites. The garnishment bar is the best. You can get diced cilantro, onions, jalapeños, deep fried jalapeños, and about 10 different types of salsa. The interior is very casual and feels like you've just stepped into little Mexico. The only downside for me is the appalling restrooms. But not a deciding factor for my business as I don't eat in the restrooms. The place hasn't benefited from new ownership, I can't confirm this, but I'm gullible and Myndi said so in her review. I was here once last year and thought it was much much better, they also had the full array of fresh radishes, carrots, and peppers at the salsa bar. When I went in last week, there were just a few unlabeled salsas and cooked peppers. I had a burrito, and call me spoiled, but I'm used to a gut busting filling meal when I order one of these from an "authentic" spot, or even Chipotle for that matter. I even paid fifty cent for upgraded meat. I got a smaller burrito and left hungry. I was also annoyed that they don't do whole pinto beans anymore, I think refried beans are nasty. I took a to go menu to look over, and have come to the conclusion that Taco Roc is overpriced, and they aren't going to fill you up. If you like expensive small plates, I still think you can get some interesting authentic mexican snacks if you don't mind paying for them. El Metate does the trick for me locally with their $1 taco nights on Mondays, Woah. read more

I've always heard awesome things about this place and finally made it here this past weekend. I was not impressed. Came in to grab lunch for myself and the sweetie in the middle of a busy day of chores. Had to wait over 20 minutes for 2 take out meals... Let's just say it would have behooved them to speed up the process. I was not only annoyed by the wait, but it gave me way too long to look around and dissect the interior. The inside was just gross, looked as though it hadn't been cleaned in days. And I'm sure their salsa/sauce self-service bar could be awesome-- if it was clean, refilled and looked after. Indeed, it was not on the Saturday I visited. Once I finally got home, the food I'd waited for wasn't even that great. Everything was a bit bland. I've been to Taco Roc 3 times. the first 2 times I was happy & recommended the place to others. The 3rd, meh, not so much. New ownership or Management have hurt this place in my mind. Granted the expansion & redecorating is a plus, but the menu still leaves a lot to be desired and there were no hot carrots on the salsa bar this time. BOOOOO! I expect a bean & Cheese burrito to have some more cheese in it, and not whole beans. would it hurt to warm a tortilla before you wrap a bunch of wet stuff in it? My boyfriend felt he got a lot of attitude from the guy taking our order. (as if our orders were SOOO hard to ring up, come on it was 3 al Pastor tacos with a bean & cheese burrito) sad to say also their men's bathroom sink was stopped up. I really wanted to like this place, but it is a dump. It was the end of the day (7PM) so maybe they were ready to close and that is why it was dirty. Maybe it is a great lunch place. We wanted to try some of their specialties we read here on Yelp, but the woman at the register didn't know anything. There is a big menu behind the counter with 25 choices. My GF had the cactus tacos and she loved them - they were only $7, but left hungry. I had some unappealing enchiladas. I had to add a lot of salsa to give it any taste. It was just OK after that. The beans were flavorless and the rice was old and dry. There is no free chips and salsa. To be honest, this place was okay. When I went to order my tacos, they provided me the tortillas with meat already inside them. I had to go to the vegetable tray myself and add veggies, like onions and pico de gallo. If you wanted bell peppers or lettuce, you'd have to go back to the counter and they charge extra for them. I remember wanting lettuce and being charged 50 cents extra. I was annoyed at that but I went with it. Also, at the vegetable tray are a bunch of sauces, many which my friends complained were spicy, even the ones considered mild (I like spicy food so I didn't mind it at all). If you want non-spicy stuff, you have to personally request for that when you order. You kind of sit wherever there's a free booth. It's not really upscale at all, which there's nothing with that. Here's the positive: food was great; enough character and craft to distinguish the place from most " near authentic" Mex spots that one discovers on the road (I stumbled here on travel from Kentucky). They have a VERY extensive sauce/toppings/pickled stuffs bar which is delightful for the palate, but unappreciative savage patrons doth shred the whole setup into a largely unpleasant mess throughout the serving day. The negative? That restroom. Good Christ; that horrid cell of neglect and nastiness. There was not a single clean surface or resting point in that commode. You simply cannot recover (after nice food) from a visit to that water closet...toilet streaked to induce recoiling, floor akin to fairground portable johns...standard human consumables such as soap and paper towel and T.P. were desperately dangling and oxidizing as if it were the world's end. Gag. Maybe carryout is your best bet. Make sure your shots are up to date, though. read more

The perfect example of a "hidden" treasure. Upon walking in, the menu presents many different options (all delicious). Complimenting the many menu options are numerous sauces to go with whatever you decide to order. The cactus tacos were presented fashionably as the pictured in the menu. In order to hold all the food, there were 2 corn tortillas per taco. The cactus pairs nicely with the sautéd vegetables, and the salad separating the two tacos had pineapple which adds a nice tropical flavor to the dish. Overall, the many options ranging from the sauces to food options does not disappoint. read more
