Tacos Del Barrio recently celebrated their 1st birthday at their original Prospect Heights location (they have since expanded to FiDi and Midtown) with $1.95 al pastor tacos. Naturally, I had to swing by to join in on the festivities and ordered two al pastor tacos (usually $4.95 ea), a fish taco ($5.50), and a side order of corn ribs ($5.95). The fish taco was my favorite bite-- the fish was crispy and meaty and loaded up with pico. I especially loved their smoky chipotle crema and would definitely recommend putting it on everything. The al pastor tacos were quite sweet and I was surprised to see that they chopped up the pineapple so finely as I am used to seeing pineapple chunks. So that's what I did while waiting for my order and was surprised to find that the friendly cashier I'd just ordered with who'd seamlessly moved on to pressing fresh tortillas was actually the owner. The story behind Tacos del barrio is pretty cool and is listed on their website. My initial thoughts when entering the space--it's bright (white walls, bright lighting, minimal playful wall art and a simple design). It's fast casual, with an open layout kitchen so I could peer over and see the ingredients, bundles of cilantro and each order in action. I ordered a mushroom taco and a mushroom burrito bowl. Both were delicious. Lots of onion forward pico de gallo on the tacos, which I like and the bowl was so flavorful that I only intended to take a taste and practically finished it. BOY OH BOY! Needed a quick bite before heading to Barclay, and I found this little "hole in the wall" taco spot. It's only about a 6 minute walk from the arena. The ambiance is lowkey, not a huge establishment. The service was efficient, fast and friendly. The food was absolutely amazing. Delicious tacos, the chicken was seasoned to perfection. Steak was good, but the chicken was definitely better. The fried shrimp was tasty, fresh and seasoned well also. The corn ribs were a nice treat to pair with everything else. Tacos del Barrio has become one of my favorite spots in this area when looking for something both quick and delicious. They opened earlier this year, and the quality of the tacos now, months later, is still just as good as it was then. If tacos somehow aren't your thing, they also have quesadillas, burritos, and bowls, and there are a range of choices including chicken, al pastor, fish, mushrooms, birria, and more. I've only ever gotten tacos here, but they are excellent - a good amount of protein, great flavors, fantastic sauces, made-to-order corn tortillas, fresh toppings. So far, I've tried the al pastor, pollo asado, and birria, and would get all of those again. The tacos are usually enough for me, but if I were to add a side, it would be the elote corn ribs. I have frequently visited this restaurant. I like takeout but eating inside is by far my favorite. In store you can add their chipotle sauce on top of any meal. You can add as much sauce as you like. The tacos came loaded with lettuce, breaded fish and shrimp, fresh cilantro, lime, and their special house sauce that ties it all together. Yesterday, I happened to be in Brooklyn at a holiday village in Greenpoint where this place was a vendor. I remembered I had wanted to try their food but never had a chance to get over there. They were serving a small sampling of their menu including two birria tacos, their Al pastor and corn ribs. The Al pastor was the best I've ever tried. Crispy edges on the pork, plenty of chopped pineapple and two sauces (an avocado and red sauce) on top. It was served on your choice of flour or corn tortillas with cilantro and onions. It was sweet and juicy and just a touch spicy. I definitely want to stop by their restaurant or order delivery from them (they are also in Manhattan). Food: The food was very average and nothing I will be coming back for. I tried three tacos - the carne asada, al pastor, and fried shrimp. The best out of the three was the carne asada, but even then all three tacos were very underwhelming and nothing memorable. You have a choice between corn or flour tortillas. I chose the corn tortilla and was not impressed by the texture, and the tortilla itself was a little bit thicker than a tortilla usually is. The tortilla fell apart completely when picking up my taco even though I ate it right away and didn't let it sit there for a while. The meat and shrimp also simply did not taste that good. I remember feeling disappointed when taking my first bite of each taco. I also tried the corn ribs which were extremely salty and not enjoyable. There was too much sauce and cheese on top. If you decide to give this place a try, they also have burritos, quesadillas, taco bowls, appetizers, and a variety of other menu items. Something I did like about this place is that they have two sauces available in squeeze bottles on each table which made the tacos taste better. Service: My main issue with my experience at this restaurant was the service. I came here during my lunch break as did the person who ordered right before me. We both waited for our orders which were not big at all for about 15 to 20 minutes. The person in front of me shared that she works in the area and decided to try out this place because she saw it just recently opened. Upon leaving, she stormed out and was really upset at the staff for taking so long to put together her order. I was equally upset about waiting just as long for my order because I was also on a lunch break and waited too long considering there was no one else waiting for an order before us. Although I appreciated that everything was made fresh to order. The staff really needs to figure out how to get the food prepared quicker because others have also left reviews commenting on how long the orders take. The most frustrating part about the speed of the service was that there was some kind of social media content creator working with the owner at the time that our orders were being prepared. The content creator was asking the owner to pose and also do various tasks with the food so that she could record. For the filming of the content, they were using our orders to get these shots and videos, which is why it took extra long to give us our food. It was so disappointing and infuriating to watch them use our orders for their content rather than preparing our food and giving it to us first and then taking the time to work on the content creation once everyone got their food. It absolutely didn't make sense that they were making us wait so that they could film content. I think the owner needs to understand that people come here during their lunch break at peak lunchtime and cannot afford to wait 15 to 20 minutes for their order. People are not going to return to this restaurant during their lunch breaks if they cannot get the orders out quicker. Ambiance: The place is newly renovated, well-lit, clean, and there are a few tables and counter seats available. I wouldn't come here with a large group because the place is pretty small and maybe seating for only about 20 people in the entire place at the very most. Overall, I would not recommend this place. There is much better food in the area and definitely better tacos in the city. I did see this shop passing along Flatbush Avenue on the bus with its stark white exterior. And I randomly saw a news report on it. But I came here by chance. It was past 10 o clock and I was looking for something to eat as a lot of restaurants were closed or were only serving drinks. I entered the store thankful for something still open (until 11 pm apparently). I took two tacos because I wasn't too hungry. I asked the owner his recommendations for the best tacos and I got the nice answer of the fried fish taco and the steak (which I ordered). I got everything on it ("con todo") and they came with salsa roja and avocado sauce. It cost on average 5 dollars per taco depending on the filling you choose. The tacos were not small but I definitely had cheaper tacos. But I keep in mind the location. I'm a huge fan of the fish taco as it was flaky and flavorful especially with the avocado sauce. The steak was decent but not my favorite. I wasn't the biggest fan of the salsa roja but personal preference comes into play. The process of ordering is efficient. They called out your order by your receipt number. It wasn't busy when I ordered but a concert had just ended at nearby Barclays so more people rolled through after I left. The space is relatively small so I wouldn't recommend it for bigger groups. Overall I do believe this is a decent late night option. While I might not go out of my way for it, I think this could be another options pre or post a game or concert at Barclays. I would be interested in trying a burrito or a bowl next time. read more

Don't buy the hype. I ordered both the fish and shrimp tacos, which took 16 minutes to prepare despite the place not being notably busy. As far as I could tell everyone else waited at least 10 minutes for their order, which is way outside the norm for any counter service taco joint. The person taking orders at the register was also the same person preparing the plates and he was visibly stressed out trying to keep up. While waiting, I noticed that one of the kitchen workers was preparing a batch of guacamole with supermarket bottled lime juice. I'm pretty sure even Chipotle uses fresh lime juice in their guacamole. As for the food, the tortillas this place uses are quite good and my fish and shrimp were both fried well but lacking seasoning. Unfortunately, the overall texture and taste was wrecked by the water logged shredded lettuce they put on the taco, every bite left lettuce water dripping all over the plate and made the tortillas soggy. Neither the green or red sauces had much in the way of flavor either. You're way better off going to either of the Ramirez taquerias, Nene's, or Birrialandia. read more
