Now that I live around the corner, that is. The last two times I have gone I literally got two breakfast tacos. That was enough for me. I got full both times, and I left satisfied. The prices are very reasonable. I have not experienced any bad customer service or any issues at this location. On days like Sunday it can get cramped but definitely the best place for breakfast tacos in the area. I haven't checked out much of the other food but it looks delicious! We ordered out for lunch on a Saturday at peak time and had a pleasant experience. My wife ordered the Caldo de Res and really enjoyed it! She was given plenty of beef and the soup my plenty hot when we got home! She did mention that she wished there was more corn and that the potatoes were cooked a little longer. I ordered the Bistek Torta without lettuce. It was okay, not my favorite torta, but definitely still a good meal. I would be willing to try it again with a different meat. I did add mayo to the sandwich at home to give it the bit of moisture it was lacking. The wifey said the service inside the restaurant was superb. She appreciated the friendly interactions and the cleanliness of the restaurant! We stopped by after a quick search because the one place we found online was not only difficult to find in person but they also ran out of food somehow. We headed to Taco More instead. As we walked in, we noticed a clean restaurant with a choice of eating near the kitchen or a warm sun room. We chose the cooler area and were waited on immediately. We were specifically looking for birria tacos and quickly orders two plates along with ice teas and water. When you want ice tea here, they don't disappoint. You get a LARGE cup and probably for most it's big enough to take the rest with you. We also ordered shrimp soup, beef fajita tacos, and a bacon cheese burger. For our app we order guacamole. The guac was fresh and delicious and their salsa that came with the chips were crema and a chili type salsa. Both delicious and spicy. The shrimp soup came with fresh slices of avocado, tortilla chips, and a homemade broth. You never know what you'll get at some restaurants but I was so pleasantly surprised that they have their own homemade soup full of flavor. My son did not say a single word while he ate his fajita tacos. He was so happy with them. The burger was ooey gooey with cheese and looked so good, not like some reheated frozen burger or anything but rather they took the time to make it their own. And our birria tacos? Well, WOW. Amazing. Dipping into the sauce only enhanced them with the chopped cilantro and onions. Perfecto! The waitress was so attentive and sweet. We definitely found our home for homemade Mexican dishes and tacos. This is not some bland Mexican place with your typical sauces and bland meats. Instead, every dish is full of flavor and freshness. We also order the ceviche and quesabirria tacos but ceviche and goat meat have never really been my cup of tea but my brother devoured them! They had me at 'cabrito'. I am mostly vegetarian. Until I am at Taco More and read "Cabrito Soup" on the menu. When most of what you hear is Spanish, you know you're in the right place for Mexican food. When it's cold outside, their cabrito soup will warm you right up. It's little and crowded, but their food and friendly staff more than make up for it. There were a few times that we had communication issues, as we don't speak Spanish, but rather than pretend they understood us and screw up our orders, the waitstaff would immediately find someone who speaks English. I don't live in Austin anymore and I can tell you this is one of the places that I miss the most. In short, yes, food is good. I have been on the hunt for the best breakfast tacos in Austin for a couple months now and this place is (at the moment at least!) in my top 5. I am a vegetarian however so am always a little bummed to see limited options and also to learn that the beans are made with lard (manteca). Regardless, my potato, egg and cheese taco was pretty darn tasty accompanied with their hot ranchera sauce that came with the chips. I also ordered a guacamole taco with tomatoes and lettuce and got a tortilla with sliced avocado (NOT guacamole) and tomatoes, sin lechuga. :-( My main issue with this place is their choice of "serve ware". In short... WHAT IS THE DEAL WITH THE STYROFOAM? I admit, I'm a stickler for "one-use" plates, cups etc. but is it necessary to give me three individually packaged creamers in a styrofoam bowl? When I asked for pepper (not sure why pepper shakers aren't at any of the tables), is it necessary to give me like 3 tablespoons worth in a styrofoam bowl? The styrofoam just kept on coming! The shear amount of this product (which by the way, NEVER BREAKS DOWN and is essentially a middle finger to our environment) and usage by this restaurant is quite simply enough for me to not patron this place again. Where breakfast tacos (four tortilla/egg) are from BTW. Yup, not from Austin. Yeah, flour tortillas are what's in in Monterrey. Corn tortillas are basically central/southern Mexico. Your typical texmex/calmex. It's just a different cuisine. That's not to say we don't eat corn tortillas up north. We do. We just eat both. But mostly flour. See, there is a big Arab and Jewish influence in northern Mexico. Hence, we eat flour tortillas and baby goat. Anyway, I moved to Austin, a year ago, from San Francisco (born and raised in Monterrey, Mex though) and was pretty disappointed, for a whole year, when it came to Mexican food here. At least northern Mexican food. But even Texmex! Calmex was much superior!!! Until I found this place! A year later! But it was worth the wait. Not sure if this is true to Americans, or even Mexicans from southern or central Mexico, but if you are from Monterrey, or up north, their flour tortillas are authentic! Thin. Their trompo (marinated pork) is on point! No pineapple!!! They have bisteck tacos too!!! And gringas! They also serve corn tortillas of course. One other thing, if you are from Monterrey, Mexico. They've got cabrito (baby goat) tacos and cabrito consommé (bouillon). OMG. The owners are from Cuernavaca, strangely enough, but I bet they put two and two together and figured people from Monterrey, Mexico would come here since it is so close. Free chips (though they were kinda rancid) but who needs chips with all that great food? Habanero pickle, grilled jalapeños, cucumbers and more, at the salsa bar. Great, quick service! Tip them well and in cash. They all speak Spanish. Learn your basics or point! They all will love you anyway! Also, sketchy area, even for me, a Mexican :). It was like I went to another dimension. This had to be the worst Mexican food I've ever had. I came in on a Friday night. The tables were empty except for one other couple. The cooks were standing around just staring at you from the kitchen. I had the "soft beef" tacos. The meat was tough and had an old taste to it. It was piping hot from the microwave. They serve warm salsa with their chips. The prices are great and the food is pretty authentic (according to a reliable source)! The chicken caldo de conzume (soup) ($4.00) and chicken quesadillas ($4) are my top picks. The soup is packed with flavor and has a slight smokiness to the broth. It comes with garbanzo beans, rice, and your choice of meat. Cilantro and fresh onions come on the side. As for the quesadillas, I get the simple one an customize it to be more like the fried one. I like it on flour tortilla with shredded chicken and cheese. They cover it with lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, and avocado. The only struggle is eating it with a plastic fork! WARNING !!! WARNING !!DISGUSTING !!! This place did a 180 on is this time around and it's too bad cause the food is good but it makes you wonder after you read this.... We order 3 tacos to munch on before our other food came out and the guy bringing them thought they belonged to another table out on the patio! This is where it takes a turn for the worst! As he opens the door he drops one whole taco on the sidewalk by the entrance. My Spanish sucks, we were the only two non-Hispanics in the place, and I'm thinking, "This ain't your madre's Taco Cabana." I thought the sign over the salsa bar said "Don't be a Desperado." No problem, I've seen all of Rodriguez's movies. What I haven't seen before is a salsa bar with sliced fresh cucumbers & radishes, and bins of charred serranos & pickled onions. Um, yum. You can really eat cheap & good here and sometimes, that's all you need. I think the last time I paid $7 for three big tacos and a bottle of water was back in the eighties. Um, flashback. But I thought the coolest thing about this place was I had no idea it even existed - it was recommended to me by An N, who knows every taquería on North Lamar. I would like to give this place a better rating just because this is my first visit here and I only ordered a couple breakfast tacos to go. I can say however, customer service was pretty dang amazing and service was fast. Let me begin with exiting my car when arriving at this establishment. I arrived early in the morning and the first thing I notice right away are the cars already parked there with hungry customers piling in the place. This is typically a good sign. The restaurant itself was a bit dark, could use more lighting for sure. I was greeted from a very sweet hostess with a welcoming smile and I proceeded to ask about take out orders. She answered promptly and nicely and then took my order. While waiting for my food, I noticed that they have a patio area across from the entrance. Its a rather large patio and they provide a couple fire stands to help take the chill out of the air. This patio area is nice, it was clean and well maintained with - considering the location, pretty good views. I ordered the Egg with Bacon and Egg with Chorizo breakfast tacos, both of which I added avocado for a small extra charge. Even though the dining room was busy - not packed, but certainly buzzing with hungry and satisfied customers, my order was ready pretty quickly. While waiting I had a chance to gaze over this salsa bar I read about from previous mixed reviews. I asked someone else which one was the hottest salsa as my tolerance for heat has decreased recently, she pointed to one of the green ones - so I stayed away from that one. I chose two of the red ones and the other green one, put some in the provided styrofoam containers and left to head home. I was ready to tear into some breakfast tacos once I arrived home, and eagerly tasted the salsas I brought with me. Sad to say - I am disappointed. The red ones, hot as fire may I add, were not impressive flavor wise..nothing to wow about or even want to try again. The green salsa, and I am a huge green salsa fan, tasted better than the red - and yes, hotter than fire as well, was still disappointing. The flavors were just bland, except the heat from the spice. Heat can be good, but heat or no heat - there needs to be better flavor to it. I wonder how hot that other green salsa was then if these were not as hot as that one... Let's get to the tacos. I ordered them on corn tortilla because in my opinion corn tortillas are the only way to go for good tacos, which they double up per taco. The avocado I ordered extra was a nice amount for the quarter extra I paid, it was fresh with no bruises or dark spots and this is December. So for the fresh avocado I am impressed. The eggs were scrambled in a pan, real eggs - not egg beaters... least they look real to me. They put a generous amount of bacon on the taco and this was chopped up into pieces and pretty good, meaty bacon not all fat like so many other places serve and cooked crispy. The chorizo taco was more disappointing, not much on the taco and it was super salty. The breakfast tacos were meh in my opinion and I really wanted to give a better review with more stars. The salsas though are pretty much a deal beaker for me, I am a huge salsa fan and I don't understand providing this awesome salsa bar, which consists of about 4 salsas and various condiments, if the salsas themselves are not good. I want to try this place again as there are soo many good reviews, I plan to go for lunch or dinner next time and try the soup and other tacos. I hear wonderful things about the soups there and this is soup weather. I was the only white guy there... Ok... that's not ENTIRELY true. I probably saw 100 people come and go and there were a couple of others who MIGHT have been Caucasian. So that's a good sign, right? First of all, don't be scared if it looks crowded. People were double-parked everywhere. So much so that the folks I was meeting for lunch bailed and I ended-up eating alone at the little window-side ledge. But yeah, the line was like 6 deep and people were standing everywhere waiting for food... tables all filled. (Note: This place is in the parking lot of a large strip-mall church... so 12 noon on a Sunday was NOT the best time to go) I was intent on eating so I got in line and had ordered within 2 minutes. Lots of order-taker people. Even found one that spoke English (sadly I don't even speak kitchen Spanish). Within a minute I was drinking water and eating fresh salsa. They only bring a few chips but gladly brought more when asked. The salsa is a roasted red. Tasty and somewhat addicting. They also have a great salsa bar with a avocado-based green, a tomatillo green, and some other kind of nuclear green slaw-like stuff that was pretty hot. In addition, there was that bright red sauce with seeds in it that I've seen at other interior Mexican restaurants and a variety of picked cucumbers, onions, pico de gallo, radishes (wtf?), limes, etc. My three tacos came out within about 5 minutes and were all really good... had a goat, a beef, and an al pastor. Nothing tasted amazing... but the whole bill was $5 and I was stuffed. So I had a great experience and I'll be going back. read more

That green salsa is so damn good I emptied out my 16oz water cup and filled it up to take home (a little trick my momma taught me) - - those little cups just aren't sufficient enough to hold all of that goodness. The service was great today, always too many of them there but they were all very attentive. The great thing about that is everyone pitches in to help any customer out - - none of that "this isn't my section" or "you didn't order from me" attitude. The more I think about this place, the more I'm not in love with it but I think thats just because I have something against weird meat. More about that later. I grew up coming here and it was the best most authentic Mexican restaurant. Now more than half of the original menu is gone and the service is terrible. Our server came to our table only twice and ignored us most of the night and other people had to help us or bring us food. She was busy flirting and being on her phone than talking to her tables. Then after that they kept bringing us other peoples food or double what we ordered even though we had already finished our meals. Two stars are for the food and only the food because at least that was enjoyable. There is no sort of communication with staff or structure how it was before. Truly disappointed to see one of my favorite places go down hill. I hope they fix things soon. read more

This restaurant has a great condiment bar consisting of the standard salsas, onions, and extras such as sliced cucumbers and radishes. Also, where else can you get all you an eat chillies torreados? The service is quick and actually decent for this neighborhood dive. No fancy table cloths or environmentally friendly ware, just lots of styrofoam and plastic. The food is simple, humble, and flavorful. There is a good selection of meats and soups. I especially like the fact that you can order soups in different sizes, S, M, L. I prefer to order a small soup and a couple of tacos. If you come here, order foods that you would if it were a food truck. Stay away from "restaurant" type foods such as chile relleno. The chile relleno was fried ahead of time so it was greasy and soggy. Here are my favorites: I mostly come here for the soups. The pozole and cabrito soups are especially good here. Also, the alambre and chicken tinga (often a special) is good. I like the cabeza, cabrito, lenguna and carnitas tacos. The tacos I had at Taco More today rocked my world. They were simply made with just amazingly cooked meats and fresh cilantro and onions. This is in stark contrast to the complexly marinated and spiced tacos at a lot of the popular taco chains that dot the city. I'm not saying I've disavowed the Torchy's and Taco Deli's of the world, but these Taco More tacos give me a new appreciation for the meaty filling in authentic tacos. The meat on each of my three tacos were on display and they were all out of this world good. I savored each bite of my Pastor (marinated pork), Lingua (tongue), and Cabeza (head beef). None of them were over marinated and the meat was tender and juicy in all three. The chunks of lingua were like diced beef tenderloin and the cabeza meat was as good as any barbacoa I've had before. This is one of the few spots I've found that has the alambre. That's basically a chopped steak fajitas with bacon and cheese. This place made a decent one but still doesn't rank at the top where I would commit to my normal schedule of alambres every two weeks. Their pastor tacos are good but not something I would again commit to coming back to on the regular. Horchata is ok. Sweetest servers and great service. We will keep coming back until we find that one spot that is the magic gem we've been looking for. read more

How in the hell have I never reviewed this place? Maybe part of me simply didn't want to share this N Austin treasure, but seriously...the cat has been out of the bag for a long time. Hands down my favorite Mexican joint in Austin, if not the entire country. I'm not sure how this place is classified as Tex-Mex. This is legit Mexican food and is rivaled (in my opinion) only by some of the taqerias I've been to in Mexico. Pinpointing one or two outstanding menu items is simply impossible for me. I've made my way through a high percentage of the menu and have yet to have anything that has been less than stellar. Now...that being said, I'll completely with 100% absolute certainty say...this is the best menudo in town. The broth is pungent and rich. The tripas is bountiful and dominates every spoonful. The caldo cabrito is equally rich and fatty. The mild gaminess of the goat combined with the crunch of cabbage and the accents of condiments make every spoonful a delight. Tacos ranging from the sweet and spicy pastor to the rich fatty cabeza de rez. Tortas, tostadas, sopes, quesadillas...man...the list goes on. The salsa bar is peerless. A variety of salsas, roasted chiles, and fresh vegetables at your beck and call. This is about as perfect as you can get...the only perplexing thing is that whenever I go, they think I speak Spanish. It's gotten to the point that although I don't understand the words they are speaking, I know exactly what they are saying and somehow manage to answer them appropriately. I was hoping for better. Nothing blew my mind. Nothing wowed me. It was OK. I, like others, had no idea about this place...until Yelp, of course!!! THANK YOU YELPERS!! I don't venture over here for any reason, therefore, had no clue! I walked in and was pleasantly surprised when I was greeted in English... Since all I read was "you better speak Spanish" simply not true. Or, at least not now. Bother the cashier and he lady taking my order spoke clear English. No troubles ordering at all. I got a pollo taco and a bean, avocado, and cheese taco. And well....some chocflan! Yippee! Hit up the salsa bar (that's what I was waiting for) I mean, salsas, fresh cucumber slices (which are extremely complementary to those salsas in every way) and fresh peppers and radishes. Nice. Little Styrofoam cups with lids for us to go people. So, here's the food. Head back to work. Bean and avocado was tasty but I felt it was quite skimpy. The salsas were fabulous and tasted great with cucumber. The chicken... Well, it was dry...to me. I didn't care for it THAT much. I also felt, compared to the many other tacos I've had, this too was skimpy. Especially for the price. $2.50 each for almost half as much as I normally see in tacos...?? I'm still hungry. The chocflan...pretty tasty, flan not as creamy as I would have liked...and the strawberry was rotten. Yes. Rotten. :-( So... Over all. I think they are absolutely worth another shot.. DINE IN ... Not to go. $7 for 2 tacos and flan. Not bad.. But I've done/had better. Nothing wowed me expect the salsa... And the service. Service was fabulous. Glad I went. But not dying to go back. read more
