If you're looking for a late night spot to eat with your friends, Carnitas el Guero is the place to go. With ample seating, convenient hours, and delicious pambazos, this place was a pleasant surprise on a random Friday night. Walking into the restaurant, we were greeted by their friendly staff who happened to only speak Spanish. After some pointing and broken Spanish, we managed to place our orders. I decided to try something other than the ordinary taco or torta and ended up with a pambazo. I didn't know this at the time, but a pambazo is similar to a torta except the bread is dipped in red chile sauce and fried until crispy. It blew my expectations out of the water. Each bite was dripping with flavor, and the bread complemented the meat and onions so well that my picture doesn't do it justice. The portions were also huge so don't worry about being hungry afterwards. I'll be back some day to try the rest of the menu, but for now I would definitely recommend this place and their pambazo con carnitas.

Food was great :) staff was friendly :) will definitely be back. Carnitas was not greasy and had a ton of meat.

I really really wanted to love this spot.. it was okay. The chorizo quesadilla is massive, so was more than enough food for two meals. I wish there was more cheese to hold it together because meat/grease was spilling out all over the place. I'd be willing to give it another shot, but it's not anywhere close to the top of my list.

Most people reviewed here about the language barrier, well, they hired someone who's great in communicating english. We didn't have difficulty ordering what we wanted. Food is delicious, the cucumber drink is huge and refreshing. It's also true their music is loud.

Wow, this was a bomb lunch! I wanted tacos and Yelp came to the rescue. These are quite the filling tacos. They will bring it out on a tray with cilantro, onions (fresh and grilled), limes, jalapeños and you can add all the salsa you want. The quesadilla is so thick, cheesy and tasty and will make you drool the whole time. You truly do get a lot of food for your money here.

Quesadilla with chicharron. Delicious! Though I don't see the chicharron...

Great value for the portion size. The namesake carnitas were my favorite thing I ordered. Very moist and flavorful. Plenty of seating available. We had the pina con limon and damn it was tasty and fresh!!

Leaving SXSW and heading down Lamar when we came up on Carnitas El Guero. Most places we past were already closed so we popped in. They were busy, we ordered Michalada's which were very good. My wife loves a good Michi, I can take'em or leave'em, this was a good one. Spicy but not overpowering, really good. We we're hungry so we ordered a libra of carnitas. What you can't see in the picture is how great the meat tasted along with both the red and green salsa. They grill a small cup of onions to go with the cilantro. We've only been in the Austin are for less than a year and hadn't found "the place" for carnitas tacos, we found it. They are open according to their door until 10:00 pm, it was after 11:00 pm when we stopped and they were still serving beers as we were leaving. Overall, service was great, food came out quickly and was delicious. We will be visiting El Guero again.

Food: the carnitas taco is chef-kiss. The pollo taco is also really, really good, and this is a place I can see myself coming back to, and bringing friends. I did try a taco with chicharrones which were too oily and didn't have a unique flavor or texture either. I can't fault them since the other two dishes were perfect. Vibe: Relaxed space, helps to know a little Spanish. It's awesome they are open till 2:00 am, very few places I'd rather go to that late at night.

Fantastic breakfast at an amazing price, particularly for Austin. Rather than coming from a premade jug, our Agua Fresca was freshly made in a blender. The carnitas themselves were delicious, with three fantastic salsas to choose from. The tortillas were beautifully pliable and the marinated raw onions on the sides were a welcome addition.

These carnitas tasted like we were back in Mexico. I mean seriously- I hope you speak Spanish 'cause they don't speak a whole lot of English. But it was totally worth it. If I had one complaint I would say we should've gone a little lighter on the skin. But the aroma... we had to eat one taco in the car before going home because it smelled so good. The rest barely made it inside before we tore into them. Gone in 10... maybe 15. So good!

I've driven by El Alma many times being in the Austin area, but I never went until last Thursday, and after surviving a brief monsoon, I was glad to get a few drinks and eat some good TexMex with my large party just before a wedding. The best way to describe El Alma is that it is TexMex that is Austinified. Everything feels a little more unique and special than your classic TexMex options. I started off with a Mezcal Margarita that put a little hair on my chest and got me going. My group ordered two of their Nachitos, which were these nice nachos. For my main entrée, I got 3 Al Pastor tacos on corn with a side of their rice and beans. Their pastor was served with pineapples, onions, and cilantro with limes on the side. They were great and I immediately crushed them all. I thought their rice and beans were pretty good as well and a step above the typical TexMex rice and beans. The server was pretty attentive throughout our whole visit, and I honestly have no complaints about what they had to offer. Pricing on the meal and drinks was pretty standard for Austin, and I didn't think anything really took me out of the experience. On top of that, for being in Barton Springs, there is quite a bit of parking. I would love to come back at some point in the future and hang out on their rooftop bar because that seems like a lot of fun. Shoutout to El Alma for being a TexMex oasis saving me from the MoPac traffic. RIYL: TexMex, but better than your average
