I don't usually like writing negative reviews, but I had higher expectations for this place and left disappointed. The menu seemed promising, but the appetizers weren't very appealing. I ordered the Wet California burrito with steak, and it was mostly rice and beans with very little steak. The "wet" was just queso poured over the top and onto the plate. Some bites tasted decent, others were inconsistent. The steak that was there was okay. The margarita was also a letdown -- more sour than expected and likely house tequila, with very little ice. Chips were unsalted (which I didn't mind), and the salsa had a bit of a pinch to it. Unfortunately, I woke up the next morning with a bad stomach ache and didn't feel great while eating the food. I probably should have said something to management at the time. Our waitress was friendly, but couldn't really elaborate when we asked about the menu. Overall, I'm paying for great food and service -- not just "okay." I don't see myself returning. read more

On our way back to the hotel from the Mayo Clinic it was getting late and we needed something for dinner. Taco Libre was just 1.5 miles from the hospital so we gave it a shot, and happy we did. Tasty free salsa and warm chips placed on the table. Delicious tacos filled up - they don't skimp on the ingredients. Large cups of Diet Coke - hey, gotta watch my figure! Tacos came in an order of three and I was able to have three different types. Perfect meal for what we were craving. Service was friendly and on-point. Food came out quickly. Terrific Lucha Libre wrestling theme with murals, paintings, and masks adorning the walls. Very colorful and fun decor. Clean bathroom. A few TV's showing soccer games. Outside seating area in front. Placed a pick-up order on a Monday evening, and it was ready super fast: 5-7 minutes max. We ordered Chori-chicken, burrito supreme with shredded chicken, and a side of queso. They have really good salsa and queso. It was pretty quiet and slow because it was Memorial Day. The portion sizes were big. My husband almost always finishes his meal but saved half for another meal, same with me. We have also catered a taco bar from here a few times and we always have way more than enough! This establishment is the best Mexican restaurant I have ever visited. I have come here many times and the food is always delicious no matter what you order. The ambiance is great too, and it is one of the only restaurants in the area where I have heard music other than taylor swift. We came here last Friday night at 7pm without a reservation and we were seated immediately! Five stars for that alone. Additionally, our server Gervin was very attentive and did a great job. As for the food, the guacamole was solid and I enjoyed my burrito. My friends enjoyed their entrees as well. Only downside was they didn't bring out a lot of chips initially, but after we ate the first bucket they were glad to bring out more. We found this place down in St Augustine by accident and loved it! It's larger than this Beach Blvd location. This location is smaller and seems like they do a lot of take out. But don't pass it by. The food is great and reasonably priced. Margaritas were great. The drink offerings are different in each location... but the food is the same and same quality. New favorite spot!! read more

I have been to traveling to Jacksonville to visit my sister these last few months. And every time I come to visit, we eat at Taco Libre. Now being a Bay Area native, these tacos do not compare to my taquerias in the Mission; however, Taco Libre can satisfy your craving for tacos. As far as tacos, I have tried their quesabirria, Al pastor, fiery fish taco, sriracha buffalo shrimp taco, and carne asada. Unfortunately, I wasn't a big fan of their quesabirria or their carne asada tacos. The quesabirria beef was dry and their consome was rather salty. What I do recommend is their al pastor. The meat is tender and full of flavor. The Sriracha buffalo shrimp taco and fiery fish were surprisingly good especially paired with their hot salsa. What I do enjoy are their margaritas. They have a few flavor options- lime, mango, and strawberry. Also, they do provide to-go cups if you are unable to consume them. read more

I've been sleeping on Taco Libre while it was only a few miles from home. I recently had a date who suggested we meet here so I finally had the pleasure of trying a menu item. I ordered the taco salad with chicken and added chorizo (at a friend's suggestion). The salad was fresh and the presentation was colorful. The shell was cooked perfectly as many times I have found places fry it a too long which makes the shell hard. The chicken was juicy and packed with flavor! Not to mention the salad was HUGE. I had the rest for lunch the following day. I heated it up on my baking stone which helped the shell get crispy again. It was just as good the second day. Our server was friendly and helpful. We talked a while before ordering and he was patient. When my beer was almost empty he asked if I was ready for another. That's the kind of service that keeps me coming back. The salsa was also good, and the queso- can't go wrong with that. The chips were fresh and they give you more if you want more! National Taco Day! Coming off of a 72-hour fast I had a craving for sushi & ramen...but then I found out it was National Taco Day and it was a wrap. Tacos it was! I searched my phone for Mexican restaurants in the area. I knew that I wanted tacos but I didn't want to go to the same restaurants that I usually frequent. I've been to Taco Libre years ago, but I haven't been recently, and could not remember what the food or experience was like so I decided to try it out. It was a beautiful night and thankfully they have outdoor seating. Upon entry I was greeted I told my server that I would like to sit outside and she told me to choose my seat and she would follow me with the menu. I ordered a lime margarita, she brought out chips and salsa while I perused the menu. I settled on Carnitas tacos and a queso burrito taco with rice and beans. Everything was delicious. The decor inside is Mexican wrestling-themed which I thought was pretty cool and something that my kids would've liked to see. Wonderful taco spot on San Pablo near the Church of Eleven-22. This is convenient to the beaches and you will always see a few tables of Mexicans, which I think speaks to the authentic act of the dishes. Parking is plentiful. There is outside seating. I love this taco spot so much! It's one of my favorite in Jax. Hubby wanted to take me out and said I could go wherever I want and I immediately said this place! It was Sangria Thursday so I had to try one of those. It wasn't bad but I have definitely had tons better so I tried a margarita next. It was frozen and VERY strong. It was very good however. Definitely couldn't have had more than one! Then I decided to get the fiery fish taco and the quesoburria taco. The fish taco was fried and came with slaw, avocado, and a sauce on top. It was good but I wouldn't say it was my favorite. My goal is to try all of their tacos so I can eventually pick my fave. The fish taco I would have again but I couldn't say it was my "favorite". First time eating here for lunch. The restaurant is neatly tucked into a strip mall, and easy to find. Ample parking. It was clean, comfortable self seating with the choice of tables or booths. A friend and I decided to try this place the other night for the first time and it did not disappoint! Nestled in the plaza on the corner of beach blvd and San Pablo road, it is the perfect place for all Taco Tuesday (or Everyday) fanatics! But, not only does it look awesome, the food is also pretty great! We shared some delicious queso between the two of us. I visited Taco Libre for dinner initially in 2016 shortly after they'd opened and I tried the asada and pastor tacos. We also got a side of their guacamole. I thought that the tacos were underseasoned and the guac was just ok. Over three years later, I returned for lunch on a Taco Tuesday. I ordered the fajita salad with chicken. Others got the enchiladas suiza, chicken quesadilla, asada tacos, and west coast burrito. My salad came with grilled chicken, grilled fajita veggies, lettuce, and cheese. I substituted the black beans for more veggies. It was ok. The vegetables had good flavor but overall, the salad was uninspired and it wasn't served with any dressing. The waitress informed me that most people use the table salsa. I tried that, along with the queso we ordered, and both were too thin and flavorless. If you're on a low carb diet, the menu options are limited. They offer a few salads but they don't have lettuce wrapped tacos. It always surprises me how many people say they love Mexican food, but they have never actually had it. What they are referring to are the places that serve piles of seasoned ground beef or dry shredded chicken, topped with sour cream, queso sauce, and melted Kraft singles rolled up in, on top of, or served next to dinner-plate-sized flour tortillas. Occasionally there is some shredded iceburg lettuce. You know, for vegetables. These places are not necessarily bad; they have their place in the world. But they are not Mexican, and they make up the abundance of the cuisine in the Jax area. So when I come across a real Mexican place, it really means something to me. Taco Libre is set back in a less-than-appealing strip mall on Beach Blvd. The menu is definitely stocked with classic, real Mexican dishes, with some Americanized options for your friend who 'loves Mexican' but needs his flour tortilla fix and isn't really sure if he's ready to venture into lengua country. The best feature is that it is one of the very few spots I've found in Jax that serves (in my opinion) the true pinnacle of Mexican cuisine: the huarache. A huarache is masa that's griddled into a thick pancake (think frybread) and topped with meat (carnitas in my case), onions, creme fresh, queso fresco, etc. I also ordered 2 tacos - 1 al pastor (marinated pork) and 1 asada (steak). Everything was super flavorful, well seasoned and cooked, and it came with an insanely good house-made salsa. Were there flaws? Sure. The masa in the huarache was a little too dense and fried a little too hard, they got part of my order wrong (probably a language thing - wasn't too upset about it), and the ambiance in the place was so-so. But it's family run, and they are doing delicious food from their own culture. I will be back to support them. read more

Went here for the first time last week and tried out the sriracha shrimp, fiery fish, mushroom chicken and shredded chicken tacos. If I had to rank them I'd say 1. Fiery fish: the avocado really ties this one together 2. Sriracha shrimp: LOVED the shrimp, so delicious and appreciated the large size so each bite is covered 3. Shredded chicken: your classic chicken taco 4. Mushroom chicken: this one was a little salty for my liking but still good.
