First time for quick lunch. Lunch chimichangas were good and fresh with fresh salad, guac, sour cream and lettuce. Tea was very good.

So I have to start out by saying, we were there on Cinco de Mayo, so maybe not the best time to review a restaurant. Having said that - they should have been MUCH better prepared for a crowd. And they were not, not at all. We were seated rather quickly as we had called ahead, and even thought she said we weren't on the list, they had a table for 7 on the patio. There was a DJ, and it was so loud that you literally had to shout to be heard, and even then, it was difficult because everyone around you was also shouting. The server came in spurts. Took a couple drink orders, and then got called away, came back, took a couple more, same thing called away. One person from our table finally went and got all of our drink orders delivered. I decided to try a taco platter. You got 3 tacos, with rice & beans. Your choice of taco fillings. I went with carnitas, steak and shrimp, and fish with pineapple. Spanish rice and refried beans. The tacos were okay. The shells were so soggy that they fell apart the first time you tried to pick them up. The fish was cooked well, and the carnitas were tasty. I had asked for NO cilantro, and it was covered, so they brought it back and it was obvious someone had just brushed some off the top. No bueno - should have been redone. The rice and beans were not good. No flavor, beans tasted metallic. No one at the table liked them. The major issue was, 2 of us got our food, then 1 more, than 2 more, and then nothing. 2 people, without food, and no servers around. The rest of us were actually finished with our meal. One person got up to say just bring us the check, we'll go without food, and they insisted they stay. Food came out - wrong food. Finally they were served, but said the food was cold. Not saying they should have, but they did not offer to remake or to refund. Again - not good customer service. Will I try it again? maybe? Just was an overall unpleasant visit. read more

Oh my Texas heart! Broken again. The restaurant is clean and the design is nice. The servers seem attentive and kind. The food. It has no soul. It's bland. It's flavorless and it's a shame. This is not Mexican food. This is what people who don't know any better would call Mexican food. I wish them the very best but I'll personally never return. What a beautiful Mexican restaurant! The decor and staff are so welcoming and everything was nice and clean. It made me want to relax! The menu was also varied and at a good price point. When we sat down we received chips and salsa and our drinks very quickly. We happened to be the only ones at that moment. We ordered a few lunch options and a kids meal and they let us decide between American or Calle (street) style tacos. The rice and queso were also very good! The only suggestion I have is to heat up or maybe change the tortillas. They were still ok but could have been better. All in all a great lunch though. Very well decorated and bright restaurant that says "Great Mexican Food." Unfortunately that was not the case, the food was served barely warm and lacked the flavor you anticipate when having Mexican. We all really want like it. The service was very good and it was at lunch and the place was empty? (clue?) servings were hearty, the can cut the beans in half and serve rice as we all had the lunch special and you get a choice of beans or rice. Fabulous! Can't believe I just found this place. Service was impeccable. The first thing you notice when you enter is how cute, bright, and cheerful it is. My order was a hamburger enchilada; the corn tortilla tasted homemade, and the ground beef was high-end with a great green sauce on top. Side of cilantro rice, which was delicious and a side salad included fresh salsa, tomatoes, fresh guacamole, and sour cream. Just really delicious! Additionally, I went on a Thursday, and they had a Thirsty Thursday special--$5 off drinks. Their drinks would cost $20 elsewhere because they come with fresh fruit and look so photogenic. I enjoyed my mojito very much and highly recommend it. They have two dining areas: one indoor and one patio. It's large enough for groups or events. I know one thing: I'll be back next Thursday. Pretty good food and fun drinks! They have a great menu packed full of staples and unique dishes to try. I was craving birria tacos with consome, found it here! Not the best on town but hey it was readily available here at Mestizos. Really cute decor and nice vibe at this restaurant. The service was great and we ran into no service issues. Our food was fresh and hot. I really loved their cilantro rice and the lavender margarita was so good! Food and vibes are great, not overly crowded but it is a more pricey option for Mexican food. We ended up spending over $60 for two people, 1 drink and 1 entree each. Overall glad I stopped here to try them out, I will be back I'm sure. But for overall authenticity? I'm not sure you'll find it here but it's a nice restaurant to visit and experience for more of a Tex Mex flare with cutesy cocktails and a nice experience on their outdoor patio. read more

Such a delightful lunch date! The chips and salsa came out right away, super fresh and delicious! I almost got some to go. Some of the best salsa I've had. The tacos were delicious, really filling, and Taco Tuesday here is absolutely worth it. Most places I have to order 3 and here I was full after 2! The staff was super friendly and made us feel welcome the whole time. The vibe is relaxed but lively, perfect for hanging out with friends or grabbing a casual dinner. Portions are generous, prices are fair, and everything tastes fresh. Definitely one of my new go-to places for Mexican food. I can't wait to come back! Sooo CUTeSIE! I was supposed to be next door but the CURB APPEAL of this restaurant made me change my mind very quickly. I stepped into the doors and forgot it was Jacksonville. The inside has a very girlie SEXY-CHIC thing happening. The decor is all from a place of better quality. I surely was feeling my soft girl vibe. The food did not disappoint. It was TEX-MEX and on point. Fajitas was FLAVORFUL all of the meats were tender and pleasant to chew. The seasoning was perfectly blended nothing over powered. Loved the interior and porch area. All beautifully decorated. There were several employees waiting on tables and they all seemed very busy. All of our food was beautifully plated. However, the dishes seemed to be lacking flavor. It's not that anything tasted bad, it just didn't have a lot of flavor. The fajita meat didn't have any seasonings nor did the shrimp in my tacos. The cilantro lime rice tasted more like sticky white rice. We really want this place to succeed. It's close to home and we love Mexican food. Newly opened Mestizo Mex Cocina is a very nice & spacious restaurant. Previously occupied by Tijuana Flats. Also have an outdoor dining area. I like their menu. Simple & not so busy. They have a nice selection of food & drinks. I find their drinks interesting with Lavender, Lychee, Guava & Elderflower flavored cocktails. We waited quite some time to get our food. Perhaps they're still adjusting. We ordered Enchiladas Suizas & Cobb Ensalada. The tortilla on the Enchilada was not well cooked. The Cobb Salad was delicious. Tried this new place recently . I will say they did not disappoint. Their chips and salsa were really good and their chips were fresh and not stale. I had the shrimp tostones which come with guacamole which were amazing. I just wish they had an extra shrimp on them or a larger shrimp. This was an appetizer by the way. But it was amazing. I also had their watermelon margarita which was so refreshing. The Service was fast and they were very attentive. And their ambiance was so laid back. So this was our first time trying Mestizo and it was pretty good! It's super close to home and I have heard some mixed reviews so I wanted to come try for myself. First the good! I loved the house made lemonade and the fact you could add flavors! I did guava and it absolutely didn't disappoint. Next the space was so pretty! It was bright, welcoming and had a nice amount of indoor and outdoor seating (if you want to bring your pup). My birria tacos were delicious. I asked for a side of their house made habanero sauce and I was super impressed. The rice and beans kind of fell flat for me. The rice didn't have a pleasant flavor and the beans also weren't great. Thankfully I was so full from the tacos I didn't mind. My husband's big complaint was the chips and salsa. The chips tasted like when they have been cooked in old oil and end up with a major oil taste and not so much chip taste. He also said the salsa tasted like spaghetti sauce which once he said that I couldn't taste anything else. I think just adding a little more flavor would help. Our server was nice but didn't check on us after our food had come out and only came around again once we were clearly ready to checkout. My husband wasn't a fan of his cali burrito but thankfully I at least really enjoyed my tacos and was able to give him one. Pricing was ok for the portion size, definitely not cheap but what is these days haha. We spent about $60 for two meals, a lemonade, coke and tip. Over all I think this place is worth checking out and I think I will definitely try it again in the future and hopefully have an even better experience! read more

Service and ambiance were good. Food was lacking in flavor. Chips were good but the standard red salsa was oddly sweet. I asked if they had a spicy salsa and they did have a homemade habanero salsa which I also didn't care for. Queso was the highlight of the meal sadly. Our service was absolutely horrible. Our waiter was in such a rush that he messed up every last meal that we ordered and did not try to correct his mistakes. He came and settled one check out of 3 at our table and went and sat down because he clearly did not want to "wait" ... We explained our disappointment to another employee and she laughed. Since it was their first week the service was a little slow. I will say the taco Al Pastor was a miss. The coating tasted like a raw flower and had no flavor. Tacos need more filling. The margaritas were good. They have a nice patio area. I will go back after it has been opened a bit. read more

The drinks are also amazing, my favorite is the white peach sangria which is freshly made every day. The chips and salsa, and chips and guacamole are also freshly made per order. The Raspberry Chimi cheesecake is TO DIE FOR! The prices are very reasonable, they have a Thirsty Thursday deal where drinks are 5$ off and they also have a Taco Tuesday deal. This was our second time here. We just bought a house on the Ortega River and we are so excited that we found a great Mexican restaurant to go to that is so close to our home. Everyone was so friendly and the food was amazing! The manager was great at checking in with us both times we have been here. It meant a lot to us that he was so involved with the customers. Enjoyed lunch at this new Cocina, and it was very good. Greeted promptly and asked about drinks. Margaritas looks fabulous with the spicy rim they supplied (don't drink tequila) but had the lychee martini, ohhhh so yummy. Immediately brought out HOT nachos that were generating heat they were so fresh and the best fresh salsa I have ever had. Highly recommend Mestizo Roll, over the top! Ordered tacos, 1 steak with chimicurri sauce and 1 shrimp. Both were very tasty and made with fresh ingredients not overcooked. Friend ordered shrimp fajitas and lord they were beautiful, huge shrimp, all freshly sautéed peppers/onions (not over cooked), black beans, cilantro rice, guacamole, sour cream, lettuce. Huge portions had enough for dinner as well. Overall loved the food and service was prompt and very friendly. I didn't realize until this moment how important appetizers are. I ordered the esquite until I can look over the menu to decide what I wanted to eat. This is Keith. They came out like corn out of a can rolled in seasoned mayonnaise. I was so disappointed. The real stuff is boiled with cilantro and onion, and the mayo is more of a topping, not so much topling of mayonnaise with a vengeance. I was turned off at how average the appetizer was that I didn't even bother exploring the rest of the menu. But one thing I will say impress me is the effort to provide a unique option to vegetarian. Tacos have chickpea patties available. This is refreshing, considering vegetarians only get beans and rice or a cheese quesadilla in a Mexican food place. So kudos to them for that that might motivate me to come back and try it on another occasion but for today it was just OK with more than OK staff attending with care. read more
