Greeted and sat right away- 5 of us. Hostess nice, server nice. Right away had two large bowls of chips and two types of salsa brought to us. Chips were good, just added salt. Unfortunately it went downhill from there. And we were patient, super patient. It was a Friday, but it was not overly crowded, like I said - seated immediately around 7:40. Drinks, took over 30 minutes for a pineapple one and three skinny- we joked the food would arrive first, but we were very wrong. Then, the waitress waited for us to try- I think it was a newer person at the bar. We tried to like it, but somehow it tasted like flat sprite.our server took them away and made us them herself. Now, those were great. Small side of guac was brought after that- meant to go with the meal, but we were so hungry we just ate with the chips. It was very good- fresh tasting. Then we waited. And waited some more. Asked about the food, then waited some more. Finally, we cut our losses and asked for the check minus the food that never came. The band was starting next door and we wanted to celebrate the bday girl. Food and service was decent. Floors were kind of slippery though so that made walking to/from the restroom a little dangerous. Menu prices are kind of high... Especially compared to some of the other Mexican restaurants we've been to in the Jacksonville area. Guess being closer to the beach might have something to do with it. Called ahead on a Friday night to get a table for 12 and they accommodated us easily. The place is a lot brighter than when it was La Nopalera so I appreciated that. The decor was much improved also. Our server was very personable and polite but she was busy. Ordered 2 large quesos for the table- yum! The jalapeño marg wasn't very spicy at all so I switched to a frozen mango margarita for my 2nd drink and enjoyed that a lot more. I ordered 2 street tacos: La Costa skirt steak taco (on flour tortilla) and veggie taco (on corn tortilla). The steak was super tasty- had great flavor and was a little crispy. Others thought it was too salty.... There was an option to add rice OR beans to the 2 tacos but it was $4.99 to add which I thought was quite high for only 1 of those options. Ate here yesterday, so this is current. We are 75 and 80. So, we know good from bad. We have been here several times,( so convenient to Mayo), and it has always been a place to return to. (I know...ended with a preposition!) Yet there was a slight tick down, and so I want to tell everyone, this place is exceptional! Our table was quickly and thoroughly cleaned. The service was impeccable, with no request too much. The house margarita is delicious, no need for fancy! There are no words to say how fussy at 75 I am! I do not like to chew meat. No problem with my chicken. Best I ever had, and we go out a lot! The salad ingredients are chopped so nicely that you don't have to wrestle. Husband was happy just after being told he needed another surgery...and , no, he cannot drink! Left there with a fraction of a usual bill, and lots of much better food (and Margarita). read more

For drinks we got regular and frozen house margs. The frozen margs are a dollar more but MUCH stronger. The chips were very thin and crispy. The salsa was ok. We got the large queso (beware it's huge)! I would have added jalepenos to it because it was little lacking in spice. I got the acp add jalepenos. AMAZING BEST ACP IVE EATEN. Sooo well seasoned and the addition with the jalepenos balanced out the rich queso. Seriously get this. I would 100% recommend this place. My first review for this place and my third visit. Let me start by saying the first visit a few weeks after they opened was awful. Two times I sent my food back as they couldn't get my order correct and left without eating. The second time was take out a few weeks ago to give them another chance, and it was better. We decided to dine in Sunday evening and will say the food was good, the service was good and our margaritas were good but a pitcher of top shelf margaritas is ridiculously overpriced. $54.99 for a pitcher of margaritas. Crazy. We had the large queso with chips, which was good, but we had to ask for more chips when we had a lot of queso left. I did cheese enchiladas and they were good. I did not care much for the rice and beans. Hubby had the chicken chimichanga and enjoyed it. Our son had chicken fajitas and liked it. I will say the food portions are generous and fairly priced. I live very close by and checked this spot out on a Saturday night in hopes of finding a go-to Mexican restaurant - and I'm happy to say I think I've found it! The chips were well seasoned, the complimentary salsa was fresh with a little kick, and the queso was well above average. The house margaritas appeared to be a pre-mix but were strong and delicious nonetheless. We ordered the crispy pork belly appetizer which came with a chimichurri sauce. The pork belly was very crispy but a little on the dry side. The chimichurri had a nice kick to it as they added peppers, and tasted very basil-heavy which I appreciated. I would order another dish with this sauce next time. For my entree I ordered a shrimp taco, the chorichiken taco, and a birria taco to try. The chorichicken taco definitely stood out and was well-seasoned. The shrimp taco was good as well with lots of avocado and slaw. The birria taco left much to be desired and the consommè was thick. Overall, I would order tacos again but leave the birria out. My boyfriend ordered the carnitas dinner which came with lots of jalapeños and onions on top; however, the onions weren't grilled very well and it was a unique addition. The carnitas were relatively dry but had good flavor. All in all, we're excited to come back and try more menu items! The waitress was attentive and kind. Walking in, the space is fairly large and had plenty of open seating. Decor was cute, lots of florals and vines with a Frida mural. Service was very attentive and we were checked on many times. Checking out the New Mexican place next to Big Lots and while it's pricier than some of the surrounding standard joints, I think the freshness and quality of ingredients are worth it. Our waiter was very attentive and helped us get the right kid-friendly a-la-carte mix of items for our choosy babies! Large shrimp come in the shrimp tacos & hubs said the steak is well-seasoned and tender. The classic quesadillas had lots of chicken and stretchy cheese on a crispy tortilla- definitely enough for two meals IMO. This was my first time here. And I ordered the ceviche tostadas which were great. I think this would be a plate that should be a self assembled only because the juice from the ceviche makes the tostadas shells soggy a bit fast. Also there wasn't any hot sauce or napkins on the table and we had to ask our waitress for extras because the only napkin available was the one your utensils are wrapped in. Love the beachy mexican decor at La Costa! This new restaurant did a great job with all the colors and details- plus the food & service were great too! Enjoyed everything I ate yesterday and im ready to go back for more. The small guac and queso dips are plenty for 2 to share and both were very flavorful. For my meal I got the ceviche tostada (great option when you don't want an entire order of ceviche) and the grilled fish taco. I would def order both again, but also want to explore the rest of the menu. My hubby loved his fajitas which came with chicken, shrimp, steak, chorizo, and veggies (and loved his leftover haha). We tried a handful of flavored margs, cute presentation, overall they were all on the sweeter side but that's to be expected with the fruit flavors. My fav marg was the watermelon marg which was clearly made with fresh muddled watermelon, not a syrup. La Costa is the Mexican restaurant I've been waiting for in Jax for the past 15 years. This review is a composite of our first two visits. The first time we were so stunned by how great it was neither of us thought about taking pictures. That's how tasty La Costa is. It'll make you forget about your phone. Their spot is a bit hidden off Beach Blvd in what was at one time a La Nopalera. Service is super attentive and friendly. The space is open, bright, clean, and cheerful with huge screens all around. Beer is cold. Cocktails are well executed. Put directly, they serve the best Mexican food in town... and it ain't even close. For the first meal we had the birria quesadilla as an app and then split the Texana fajitas. Both were phenomenal but it was probably not a good idea to order both for two because it was a mountain of food that could've fed 6-8 people. Huge portions and everything was on point. We had to go back within the week. Again, soooo good. This time we started out with the shrimp ceviche (perfection) and then had the enchiladas suizas and the carne asada dinner plate. The enchiladas were a perfect mix of cream and tanginess from the verde. The steak was perfectly seasoned, had an ideal texture, and was perfectly presented with excellent beans, rice, a dollop of guac and some pico. All dinner plates come with warm tortillas. New to the Jacksonville Beach area, my wife and I our on a fast and furious restaurant tour. Today we decided to give La Costa Mexican Cantina a try. As luck would have it, we came in around 6:30 on Thursday and it was surprisingly not busy. (Not yet anyway.) With a warm greeting, Daniel, also our server, seated us. Right off the bat, the things we noticed and liked were the lighting, openness, and cleanliness of the restaurant. We also enjoyed the whole "vibe" there. Music in the background, which was festive, upbeat, and not overpowering. Daniel offered us menus and we ordered queso dip with chips to start. He told us about the day's drink specials which were a variety of mojitos and a watermelon margaritas. Our first round were mojitos: I had the cherry; my wife had a mango. Our second round of drinks were the margaritas. Large drinks, with a good quantity of alcohol. And even though I really do not enjoy Mango or watermelon flavors whatsoever, all three of our drinks were surprisingly delicious. For our meal, we came in with the full intention of ordering Chimichangas, but for giggles asked Daniel for his recommendations. He said the Chimichangas are really good but what he really wanted us to try was the Molcajete - a dish with steak, chicken, shrimp, chorizo, fish, jalapenos, cheese, and jalapenos and served with a side of rice, refried beans, salad, and tortillas. I know what I like and usually stick with whatever I was craving when I come to any restaurant. This time, we decided to take a flier from our server and follow his recommendation. Boy was that a money choice!! The Molcajete arrives in a bubbling dish. Envision a small cauldron. The presentation is impressive. Strips of marinated steak, chicken, edible cactus hanging from the side like an alien flower. In the midst of all that bubbling goodness--more meat, onions, shrimp, chorizo, fish, cheese, jalapenos, and everything else. It is a two-person dish and trust us on this, the portion is very generous. To briefly return to our service: Daniel was attentive, accommodating, friendly and cared about the restaurant, his job, and our experience. Whatever we needed, he was right there. He was so thorough, we felt guilty for how hard he was working. During our meal, another gentleman named Oscar asked us how our meal was and if there was anything else we needed. Like Daniel, Oscar gave wonderful charm and customer service, making us feel so welcome and valued as customers. That seems obvious, but I have eaten at numerous restaurants that unfortunately did not. Oscar greeted every customer coming inside, most, obviously regular patrons--as if he knew every one of them personally. We even met Victor, the owner, who passed by to share his appreciation of us choosing to dine with them. Start to finish this was an exceptional experience, and La Costa Mexican Cantina became one of our instant favs! Fantastic service, delightful food, and outstanding value. Total*belly*Love! Whether you are flying solo, with your family, or out on a fun date night, this spot gets a special nod. My only regret was enjoying (a little too much) the warm, fresh chips and that heavenly queso! The service was great, the food was delicious and the interior of the restaurant was super fun and colorful with murals and plant walls that added interest. The chips came to the table warm, the salsa was a bit runny but the flavor was good. I like my salsa chunky! The queso had delicious flavor but The serving size was a little skimpy for the price. The jalapeño margarita was better than the Cadillac, in our opinion, but we enjoy some heat. The entrees were exactly what we expected and the flavors seemed authentic, the sauces were a little different than most we have had in the area restaurants. We'd love to return to try some of the adventurous items like the octopus or the beef tongue. Highly recommend this restaurant and happy to see this strip mall filled up again. Had a craving for Mexican food, we decided to try La Costa Mexican Cantina off Beach Blvd. we were very pleased with the service and food. Oscar, the manager, greeted us at the front door welcoming us in. I had to try the Queso Fundido with Chorizo as our appetizer. It came out bubbly hot and oh so delicious. We then ordered our food, starting with chicken tacos Mexican style followed with a steak Mexican Burrito this Burrito was huge!!. The food here has been consistently mediocre. Carne Asada meat is not marinated at ALL and was powder dry. Spanish rice is not seasoned. My Carnitas taco was dry - the meat left in the pan much too long. The refried beans are not authentic with pintos, but with red beans. Strangest refried beans I've ever had. Not sure where the reviews are coming from - obviously have not tasted genuine Mexican food. However, the tequila on special was a nice consolation prize, but my son's California burrito was mediocre. At least they got the seasoned chicken correct, but the burrito was 90% unseasoned rice and red beans. read more
