Here is a family-owned, Mexican fast food restaurant in a Southwest mountain town that is already packed with a dozen or more Mexican places and a few "Mexican" chains that manages to holds it's own. We have hit this place for a lunch more than a few times and while is isn't a wildly imaginative nuevo-mexican-fusion establishment, we never fail to leave satisfied. It's your basic Americanized Mexican food - yellow cheese and the whole smear, but prepared with some skill and care. They offer some fine combination plates, always one of my favorites, and about as close to a Mexican buffet as Prescott seems to offer. They have an open kitchen, a feature that always pleases the foodie in me, so I can watch the guys cook as I wait for our order and that seems to make me appreciate the food that much more. The hits for me have been the Chorizo Burrito and the Fish Tacos; one for when I have a bearlike hunger, the other for the days when my jeans are a tad too tight! This place is really geared for takeout, as everything is packed to go, and there is a (busy) drive-up window, but they have a dozen or so tables and booths and they are always clean. I really wish the had real flatware; I have come to dislike the cheap, white, disposable forks in particular. Perhaps another down-check is that it is popular with the High School crowd and a few times it has been pretty mobbed. They seemed to be prepared for the traffic and keep churning out food and I don't think the quality suffered at all. How many High School students can you cram into a converted gas station? Quite a few, it appears! One gripe is having to order chips and salsa separate; I have been pretty well trained over the years to expect it at Mexican sit-down places, and I miss it here. read more

I moved here 10 years ago, when I first found Taco Dons, I would recommend it to everybody as the best Mexican Food in Prescott. Now, it is a dirty, expensive and FLIES. I was disappointed, * Red Chili Burro, Deep fried.. **Meat was unsavory, red chili tastes burnt. * would always get a small amount of lettuce on my plate, (more like garnish) **I asked for a bit of lettuce, they wanted to charge me $1.00 !! * The worst thing, trying to eat while waving the FLIES away..not just one or two or three..I counted 8..just by our table.. Appears to be out of business. Last two times I wanted Mexican, went to Taco Don's, both times within posted open hours, and the place was dark and dead - nobody home. They've either shut-down, or they just close the place randomly when they feel like it - in either case this place can't be counted on if you're seeking Mexican. read more

Tried this place when I first moved here about 6 years ago from Phoenix (Mesa), so I am a little tough to please with mexican food. Ordered an enchilada and got a uncooked corn tortilla loosely wrapped around some meat and covered with red sauce and cheese, all of it was cold. This is literally the worst enchilada I have ever eaten, well, tried to eat. Today Taco Dons got another chance. Ordered lunch with no pico (I am allergic to some stuff in it). When food came, I asked if pico was on it, and was told yes. Requested a new order, without pico, was told I would have to pay for it, (as well as the original order)! I told them I asked for no pico and the girl who took the order said I didn't. Well, I guess it doesn't matter what you order, they will give you whatever they want. NO MORE CHANCES FOR THIS DIVE!! I've always counted on Taco Don's for quick, reasonably priced, delicious Mexican. I love their enchiladas,,,,well I did. Things gave changed and the sauce was just average, the salsa wasn't as tasty as before. Everything was just kinda bland. It makes me sad because I really enjoyed going there read more

This is by far my favorite Mexican food in Prescott. Great prices, people and of course food.

Whenever I get to Prescott (I have relatives there) one of my must stops is Taco Don's for the Indian Tacos (known as Navajo Tacos at the Cameron Trading Post). While maybe not as good as the ones we use to get in Cameron (when we lived on the South Rim) they are worth the effort none the less. I love fry bread and can't get it where I now live. The food was fast, good, and delicious. Not a lot of food to chose from but the customer service was excellent and the staff was very friendly. I had the number 2 tacos, enchilada, rice and beans. It was ordinary, fresh, delicious, and greasy. The plate was very hot and the food filled up the whole plate. The waitresses females were very friendly and attractive. I rarely give 5 stars to any restaurant, its well, rare for me to do that. But I felt I had to update my review and affirm it because of recent events. The owner of this business, Jayme Salazar, died in an accident on 4/28/17. While I did not know him personally, he was always greeting me whenever I came into the restaurant with my wife. He even took time to sit with us once and ask how we were doing. I've always loved the food here, best street tacos in town, all the food is great. But it was not just the food, it was the atmosphere here that brings be back. The crew, the food the owner made it a place to feel like home. My deepest sympathy goes out to all that worked and knew Jayme. If you have a chance, stop by see the place he made feel like home to patrons like me and others. Taco dons food is amazing but when I go in they get my order wrong everytime. When I bring it up they deny and argue with me and refuse to make it right. Twice they've overcharged me and my friends. We were so done we didn't even bring it up. Great food; poor customer service. read more

The food is ok most of the time. The drive through is what really bugs me, you order at the window, pay, then told to drive around the back so the next person can order...ok no problem. How about getting my order to me before the 4-5 others behind me gets theirs....They also have more than one crappy attitude girls in there. We love Taco Dons! I always get their chicken taquitos because they are the best I have ever had. The inside could use some updating but I don't go somewhere for the decor. Fantastic breakfast burritos! That's all I can really speak to, however. I've not tried anything else there. Also, it's a bit of a hole-in-the-wall, and could seriously use a thorough cleaning and update. Doesn't give a good first impression, and I wouldn't have tried them if a friend hadn't insisted they were good. Food is great, but service and cleanliness are pretty bad. Sometimes you get a fake smile and always are there flies everywhere. With as much money you know they bring in (always a line at DT and inside), this place desperately needs a remodel. Hope they take care of it soon! read more

I'm loosing my faith in Yelp! I can only assume that the stars from other reviewers are for breakfast because we just finished one of the worse Mexican dinners we've ever had! My wife had the cheese enchiladas and I had one of the combinations plates that included a tamale and chile relleno. We also ordered a side of chips and "salsa". Holy crap, this place is bad! The chips were out of a bag and the "salsa" had the consistency of water. It was like they poured it out of a bottle. The sauces on that they cover the entrees with is not only tasteless, it looks terrible! Mine had some sort of green pea looking sauce poured on top of the relleno and the tamale had some "straight-out-of-the-can" chile con carne that was flavorless. It's rare that I will walk away from Mexican food, but we could only stomach about 25% of this meal when we both put the forks down and said "no mas". I'd rather do Taco Bell! PS -- I didn't even mention the fact that the person who took our order acted like we had ruined her day by walking up to the counter to place our order! So the food is bad, but at least the service sucked also. read more

I've been to Taco Dons twice and the owner knows my name already. He is always so friendly. In addition to the friendly atmosphere, the breakfast burritos are amazing for how much they cost. I brought a couple of flagstaff friends here and they said a breakfast burrito that was like the ones they ate at Taco Dons would be waaaay more expensive in Flagstaff. The green chili and egg breakfast burrito is my favorite so far. I haven't tried anything beyond the breakfast burritos but I eventually will as I will be working in the area full time. read more

We would often make it a special family treat to go get breakfast burritos on Saturday mornings on a regular basis. The owner is great and knew us by name, as did a ton of the staff. I had to go to Prescott this past Monday (02/29) for business, so I wanted to find a place to have lunch. Taco Don's is right around the corner from the Yavapai County building, so I checked out Yelp and decided to give it a try. I love little hole-in-the-wall family Mexican restaurants and Taco Don's fit the bill. I parked, and walked in. Taco Don's has a row of booths and tables in the front of the building when you first walk in. Keep walking in towards the center of the building and you come to the drink dispensers and the counter to place your order. Being a first timer, I went with what I enjoy the most. a red chile burro enchilada style w/ rice and beans (a #8 combo plate) for $8.99 including a drink. I also added a side of chips and hot sauce for $.90. The gentleman behind the counter handed me a cup, and I got my drink (Iced tea, and it was fresh!). I went and sat down in a booth with my magazine, and waited. I barely sat down and the chips and hot sauce arrived. The chips were your average variety, nothing special, not great, not bad. The hot sauce was very thin and didn't have a lot of flavor, but it did have a nice heat burn. About 5 minutes later, my meal showed up. It was nicely presented on an oval plate. The burro was good sized and had the requisite red chile sauce and cheese on the top. The beans and rice looked good. First thing I tried was the burro. The red chile sauce was a little thin for my taste, but it had a nice flavor. The beef inside the burro was in small cubes and looked/tasted like round steak; it was very good and unbelievably tender. I think the tortilla was harder to chew than the beef (not a knock on the tortilla, it was fine; it's just that the beef was that tender). The rice and beans were good also, nothing special, but they both had a good taste and I enjoyed them. I was a little confused about the service. The gent working the counter brought out my chips and my combo plate, but I had to go up and get silverware napkins (opposite of the drink dispensers). I wasn't sure whether or not to leave a tip; but I did, since he brought me my food. Taco Don's is not fancy, but it was neat and clean. The staff was friendly and welcoming. I know a couple of Yelpers commented on the rudeness of the staff, but I didn't see any of that and my interactions were pleasant. As a matter of fact, 1 or 2 of the guys working in back were having a great time singing with the music and sounded very happy. I wish Yelp had 1/2 star ratings, because Taco Don's earned a solid 3 1/2 stars. The place was clean, the staff pleasant, and the food was good. I will be back. read more

We were pleased to see tamales on the menu. The first taste of the tamale was a morsel of masa that was lying on the plate. It was great. Sadly, the tamale itself was very, very ordinary. The sauce was almost tasteless. The fish taco and carne asada taco were super boring, and came in two soft taco shells soggy with grease. We could only eat one with each taco. The other two were too greasy for the dog, even. The beans were similarly flavorless, and the salsa helped only a little. The salsa was parceled out in very small containers, and had to be requested each time. Nothing was bad, but we have no reason to return. read more

I went to Taco Don's for the first time tonight. I've always heard how great it was. It was hands down the worst Mexican food that I've ever had. I had the chicken burrito enchilada style with rice and beans. None of it had absolutely any flavor. The chicken was plentiful, but tasted like it had been boiled in water with no spices for flavoring. The enchilada sauce was watery. I threw over half of it away after rescuing the chicken out of the burrito for my dog. The only thing good was the salsa which had a very nice heat to it. read more

Best shredded beef taco of my entire life!!! No lie folks they are perfect. Crispy light corn shell crisp lettuce and some cheddar on top of perfectly seasoned beef. The only reason I held back a star is that when you get them to go they have a habit of cracking.... No less delicious but do yourself a favor and have a sit in meal. As I was leaving the taco man in the window said to me " next time get them deep fried! They are amazing" I can't imagine them better but I can't wait to see for myself. read more
