I'm a huge fan of both Taco Boy locations with the downtown one being my favorite! I ordered a quesadilla and it came with lots of veggies. I visited this location in Cinco De mayo, and while they were quite busy, they were able to accommodate everyone and keep up with the orders. Taco Boy in Charleston is one of those solid consistent places were you will always find a table without a long wait. On a summer -not too hot- day we chose to sit on the patio in a shaded area and it was a lovely time shaded and cool. We ordered a pitcher of margaritas, which was really good and had at least 7 singles in it, so it was a great value. We shared the Nachos, which were good but could have used a better distribution of toppings to have a more evenly coated chip across. Also tried the chicken taquitos, which were good as a sharable snack. For the main meal I had the quesabirria , which was really good and large, I ended up bringing home more than half of it and I was very happy eating left overs for two more meals. I do wish there was a happy hour or some sort of specials to give me an excuse to go more often. Bonus point for Pepper, the resident cat that roams on the patio. read more

4 stars for the friendly service and the daily happy hour from 3-6.. The place itself is also nice, tucked away from downtown with ample parking. Multi level indoor/outdoor restaurant with multiple bars. I forgot to take pics of the food SMH. By the time it got to the table I had to ask for to go boxes so that I could leave and go to work. I did try the "famous" queso and chips fresh which tasted like melted Kraft singles American cheese which was a turnoff for me, but my friend liked it. We ate here on the first day of my first trip to Charleston and it was alright. We came with another family and we all got a range of things. I ordered the taco plate with one shrimp tempura taco and one firecracker shrimp taco. The firecracker was amazing. Cooked just right and the flavors were poppin'. The other taco was bland and the remoulade had no flavor. It tasted basically like mayonnaise, which I do not like. The beans and rice were good. The table started with guacamole and salsa and both tasted totally fresh. There was no question that they had just made it. And the chips were warm and crisp. I ordered a tequila, soda, lime and it was fine, but it's a no frills drink so there's nothing to report there. All the kids ordered pink lemonades and they complained of the sweetness. You heard me right, the KIDS, complained about how sweet it was. Naturally I had to taste it and, OH, was it sweet!! My kids did add a bit of water to them to offset it. I did not try the quesadillas but my daughter complained about the over-the-top amount of cheese it contained, so if ordering, you need to know that. But I know that is not a deal breaker for some. My son had the grilled fish taco plate, which I did try, and we both were not a fan. The fish was completely dry, overcooked and had no flavor, which my husband also said of his Birria taco. And the nachos (which my other daughter ordered) had hardly any carne asada (which you pay $7 to add), and was mostly loaded with lettuce under the initial toppings. It was more like a taco salad if anything. You may be wondering why I gave them a three. Well, some of the food was flavorful, fresh and tasted great, but then there was the other half that wasn't great. The restaurant is really cool looking on the inside and it has indoor seating as well and a large outdoor area so in that regard, they can accommodate a lot of people. Yet the bigness of the restaurant could explain why some things took a while to get to us (like our drinks). Because Charleston has SOOOO many restaurants, I likely won't be back. I was with friends who have 5 kids so it ended up being a perfect spot for us to sit outside and they had an awesome play area to keep them entertained in a close distance. This is a staple Mexican place for us- the wait for a table is minimal, the drinks are great and the outside are makes it a pleasant enough to sit and chill while waiting for a table. If you have kids the outdoor area has games and space for them to blow off some steam away from tables and the bar. The food here is always solid and tasty, service always great. Went for lunch on Wednesday 3/19, I mention that only because we don't remember our waiters name. He did an excellent job and the service by all of the staff was great. We started with the Mexican Street Corn n nachos. It was thick with sweet corn, cotija cheese n lime mayo. My wife had the Mexican Ceasar salad with Chicken. My brother made a reservation weeks in advance, yet we still waited an hour because other parties were still dining. The manager initially told us the wait would be 11 minutes, but that turned into repeated delays with no accountability--just excuses blaming other guests for not leaving. What made it worse was that I had to seek out the manager myself to express my dissatisfaction, rather than him stepping up as a leader. Instead of addressing the issue professionally, he was dismissive and rude, making the entire situation even more frustrating. What should have been a quick, enjoyable meal turned into a miserable three-hour ordeal. This level of mismanagement and poor customer service is completely unacceptable. Our worse complaint and why I won't come back is that chips and salsa do not come with your dining experience. You have to purchase them... for $10!!! Ridiculous. But, for $13 you can get the trio of queso, guacamole, and salsa appetizer. We ended up doing that because it made so much more sense, a much better deal, and you got 3 different options. The chips and salsa would not be worth purchasing for $10, salsa was good but not that good for the price.
