I love this place for a few reasons. This has hands down the best Mexican food on the peninsula. The fajitas are my favorite and I'm Sorry, they are so good, I never order anything else. The portions and prices are really reasonable especially for Charleston. What's even more amazing is how nice the staff is. Everyone is warm and kind. I've only ever eaten with my dogs on the patio but it's always been clean and quiet. There are a few Mexican places on King but none are half as good as this gem. It's worth the detour. read more

You can sit indoors or outside -- the large doors were open when we went, and the weather couldn't have been better. The chips were a little on the thick side and the salsa was good, though not super memorable. We ordered the steak and shrimp fajitas -- delicious, but I always wish for more onions and peppers! We had a bumpy first Azul experience. At least ten different servers, expos, and managers helped us during our meal. We were patient, proactive, and encouraged each employee to communicate/check-in with their colleagues. Three employees helped us with our bill. Unfortunately, our bill was still tallied/split completely wrong. We'd encourage Azul's GM to clearly define each person's role, set up zones, and step in (only) when servers get slammed. A friend and I stumbled into Azul for one last drink before we wrapped up our night. I had a glass of pinot noir, and it was quite good, super reasonably priced, and a nice-size pour. This place has a gorgeous outdoor patio space. I loved the way the space was decorated and the tables and chairs were such a unique touch. When we were seated we got free chips and salsa. I ordered a side of guacamole to go with the chips. It was nice and fresh! For my entree I ordered the chicken fajitas and my husband ordered tacos. My meal did not come with the tortillas like it was supposed to, so I had to ask for them, which wasn't a huge deal. My husband ordered tacos asked for a side of cheese and no cilantro. Instead of no cilantro they gave him no onions and didn't give the side of cheese. He then had to ask for the side of cheese and picked the cilantro off. He has the thing where cilantro does not taste good to him, so it was a nuisance having to pick it off. Overall the food was great though besides those things. The portions were large. read more

Stopped here for dinner our last night in Charleston and had a nice time. I think with a little polish, the potential of this space is great. The dining area is huge, they have an amazing bar area and the outside dining space just has great vibes. Food is good as well. Complimentary chips and salsa were good, although the salsa had more of a tomato vibe than spicy flavor. But I like tomatoes so i wasn't made. For my entree, I had chimichangas and they were great. Lightly fried and with an appropriate portion size, served with amazing black beans, guac and salad. I really enjoyed my meal. Also, my cucumber margarita was great...so refreshing and light. Service was friendly but lackluster. For example, the waiter didn't write anything down and therefore got one order completely wrong and another partially wrong. We had to ask a couple of times for tortillas for the fajitas. Had to ask for other things we'd requested a couple of times as well. Again, everyone was super nice but there wasn't attention to detail where service was concerned. I would still go back, just keep your order simple and ask your server to repeat it back to you beforehand and you should be okay. The food is tasty, served hot and fresh. Portion sizes are on point and you might need a doggy bag to take home the leftovers. This place was a pleasant surprise! It isn't rated great on Yelp and I'm not sure why. We were a large group and everyone enjoyed their food and drinks. I had the Chilaquiles Verdes and it came with rice and a guacamole salad. Everything on my plate was as good as it looks! Huge space inside and out. As you walk up you can see that you're going to have a good time. If you had asked me what color I associated with happiness, I would have said yellow. Now I can confidently say Azul. I was nearby looking at the menu of a different Mexican restaurant. It was kind of pricey, and I wasn't really sure how good it was going to be. Being from Miami, I was skeptical as to how SC mexican would compare. "I wouldn't go there," a voice said behind me. "It's not very good." It was a college student. "But, if you like Mexican good, just over there is Azul." I thanked him and decided, you know what? Do it for the plot. From the moment I tried the complementary tortilla chips with their salsa, I knew this was going to be great. The SALSA was delicious!! Perfect, puréed and tangy. I ordered the three sauces enchiladas and mixed taquitos. I adored the green sauce enchilada, but they were all good. The taquitos were absolutely heavenly. I know that being famished makes everything taste better, but I'm fairly confident that between the excellence of my food, the impressive variety of the menu, and the contextually reasonable price, that this is (surprisingly) the best Mexican place I've ever been to. 100% will be back next time I'm in Charleston read more

We were looking for a dinner restaurant near the visitor's center. Azul had very cool decorations and we love Mexican food so we chose to eat here. They have the usual Mexican dishes as well as some specialties. The chips and salsa were standard Mexican restaurant as well as the queso. I had the seafood enchiladas. They were really delicious and the portion was huge. They are filled with grilled shrimp and scallops and covered with green sauce. The sides were good as well. Azul is the kind of Mexican place that both cares and can really deliver the flavor. Visiting town with picky family, came for the wide variety of menu items. They have it all including things like Colorado beef tips which I got, outstanding quite spicy sauce and a whole plate of sliced charred beef to add the sides to. Son found the Gringo tacos, they nailed what he wants at home--taco shell, ground beef with cheese and lettuce and that's it! Hilarious item. New vegetarian teen daughter found the Azul bowls, perfect and the gluten and dairy free wife got steak ranchero which came fajita style. Service is falling-over gracious, we had to ask for a side or two to be redone without an unexpected topping and it was no problem. Good drinks too! We ducked into Azul to avoid the rain and decided to have lunch. We ordered the broiled fish tacos and the cheese steak burrito. The fish tacos came out fried and they remade them grudgingly. Our server was rather absent most of the time. When we noted that the fish was supposed to be broiled she walked away and returned with a man who spoke with her in Spanish without addressing us and then walked away. She took the dish and said it would be remade. But they were very tasty though they should have included more fish. The burritos were rather small looking but were very rich from the cheese sauce. This could have Easily been 5 stars except for Ivan's inattentive service!! The place was hopping for later dinner on a Wednesday and my party of 4 were hungry from a day of airports and travel. The restaurant is large and easily holds 100 guests or more. Tables, booths, high top tables, seats at the bar and covered outdoor seating available (weather permitting). Colorful decor, flags from ceiling and wrought iron fixtures. Meals are served on beautiful glazed ceramic plates with traditional Mexican colors, symbols and they hold the heat so your food is hot and you're advised not to touch the plate. Our drinks were very good, their salsa is addictive with light but very crispy corn chips. It took about 10 minutes before our server acknowledged us and came back in an appropriate time for drink orders, but took longer to be delivered. When drinks did arrive Ivan said, "I'll be right back" and then seemed to vanish. Our chips and salsa had also vanished because we were hungry and we were hoping for refills. I am a very patient person and give people serving the public the benefit of the doubt, especially when it's obvious that other waitstaff is hustling back and forth to their respective tables. Our server no where to be seen in dining area. Then he's spotted walking over to help sing Happy Birthday on opposite side of room, walking into area I suppose is kitchen. Gone again. Then I see him walking with empty tray perched on shoulder? Not delivering food or drinks; also not clearing tables. Just walking around. I Rarely call out to waitstaff, but it was noisy/ busy, and as he passed our table: no eye contact, no "I'm sorry I know you've been waiting, can I bring you anything on my way back?" Nothing. Basically ignored us. We drank our drinks and needed to pay, or I would've left. He comes back after an eternity and finally takes food order, which arrived in about 10 minutes- delivered by other waitstaff (probably because he knew we were pissed) I should've asked for the manager to address on the spot but we were tired and just wanted to walk back to hotel. I tip well as a norm, but not this night. But the food, drinks, ambience were all fantastic: clean, lively and noisy (but not obnoxious) because of the crowd, which is a good sign. If there's a crowd/ line, it's got to be good. Staff was hustling except for Ivan. You should still come try the food and I hope you have a 5 star experience! read more

We came to Azul in downtown Charleston for a very low key engagement celebration. There were only 8 of us, we came on a very slow Tuesday evening. Unfortunately, the server we were assigned had quite a bad attitude towards us, despite us being a very agreeable group. We just couldn't get her to be friendly towards us, and each interaction was quite awkward. The chips were cold and unsalted, salsa was a bit watery and bland. Our orders were taken accurately, and we received our food within fifteen minutes. Everyone enjoyed what they ordered, I would say it was average if not slightly below average. The avocado and guacamole were completely brown. The overall ambiance was lovely and colorful, although there wasn't any music playing the night we were there, or it was playing too quietly to notice. What a shame, we have been eating here since they opened and always enjoyed the food and service, this time was very different. To be fair, I understand business are suffering with fewer people and higher prices amongst other stressors, this just wasn't a cause for my review. Thursday at about 5:30, simple orders, no special requests, restaurant was not busy ( perhaps 10 diners max). Wife- 2 item combo, chile relleno and taco, chile was obviously microwaved and for too long causing the cheese to harden and the chile impossible to cut. They offered my wife another item which she accepted and no more issue here. Myself- mole enchiladas which were like warm on ends and cold jn the middle, I did not send back as I was hungry and food flavor was great, guessing these are frozen and also nuked but just a guess. In closing, will still likely try again hoping it was an off night, would be sad if we lost a nice addition to our community. read more
