Our group of five had a poor dining experience here--in sum: mediocre food and we experienced very bad service. The food: two of us ordered the Kao Soy dish, and the noodles were overcooked and mushy. The curry wasn't very flavorful as this dish usually is. The pad Thai, garlic noodles and tofu dish also ordered by our table was just ok. The service: it was unfortunately terrible from the beginning. The restaurant was about 60% full so I don't think it was due to them being short staffed. One of the dishes that was ordered with tofu came with chicken instead. The garlic noodles came 20 minutes (!) late--supposedly because they made the wrong dish. They should have at least brought out an appetizer so that our friend could eat something along with the rest of us. Most of us were done with our meals when his came out. Our drinks were never refilled unless we went out of our way to get a server's attention. I had to ask for chopsticks 3 times before I finally got them. And we sat around 15 minutes after our plates were taken away waiting for the check. The space is great, however, and they are building out a patio. The experience appears promising but their mediocre food and poor service makes this place fall short of what it could be. A neighborhood favorite - delicious, fast, and reasonably priced. We've gone for years and enjoyed dining in, dining on the patio, and takeout or delivery. We've continued to purchase takeout from them during COVID and they seem to be taking excellent precautions with minimizing people in the entry space. My girl and I tried this place for delivery last night. I have eaten here a couple other times in the past year or two with pretty good success. I would start by saying their menu is hit or miss, some is very good, and some is a little too much for me. They have two menus, one being more American and the other is more traditional Thai dishes. The Thai menu is the better of the two, just note spicy is spicy! This was my first time ordering delivery, and trying a couple different dishes, just not that good. We got the moo ping appetizer, which was very good. We also ordered the cashew chicken with, bell pepper, chilies, peapod, etc. It was very sweet, with no spice, very bland and disappointing. We also got the pod woe sen; bean tread Noodles with chicken, shrimp, mushroom, onion, carrot, cilantro tossed in a lime and fish sauce dressing. It's tasty, but needs more sauce, as it was very dry and a little under seasoned. Again, just not as good as in the past. I may try it again, but I would definitely order different dishes? read more

My family and I have been coming here for 10+ years. They have ruined all other Thai food for me because they're so unbelievably good. Outstanding flavors, homemade sauces, and wide variety of dishes. Everyone I bring here loves it. Staff is very friendly and I love how low key & casual the restaurant is. Highly recommend Clay Pot Lover, Panang curry, Satay, crab rangoons (even a simple dish like this is even better at TAC), grilled squid, and pad Thai from the special authentic menu, which is served in an omelette. Not going to make it a long review, since you can describe this place as F'ing Amazing. Most Thai places server the same generic thing over and over again, sorta like Americanized Chinese places. This place has a great regular menu, but their secret menu is where its at. I was amazed by what Im missing at going to other places. I wish I could remember what I had was called, but it basically pork 3 ways in a spicy broth bowl. When ever im in Chicago, I will go to this place since we have nothing like this is the Detroit area. Love the panang curry, spring rolls, and egg rolls. I've never tried spring rolls like these before. They're not your typical rice paper wrapped vegetables and noodles, I'd recommend trying it. Ok, so I gave Tac Quick another whirl...and I'm pretty sure it'll be my last. The food, OK. The service, slow. The Tom Kha soup, the bright spot. My biggest BEEF? The server forgot my hot tea, no biggie. But it appeared on the bill, so I asked for it...and knew I'd be sitting with my gal pal for a while longer, so why not? She also ordered one. So, what does our server do? Instead of just giving her a tea on the house (which is WATER), he goes and reconstructs the entire bill to add the $1.50. Even though mine showed up ONE HOUR late. Seriously? I don't chimp for free stuff, but that is just beyond tacky. It really irked me for some reason...we just laid down $40 on dinner, and YOU forgot the tea, so at least comp mine...DUH! Pad thai Omelette. Did you hear me?? Or rather, did you see what I just typed out?! PAD THAI OMELETTE. Heck yes. It's super tasty, a dream come true- I love any dish that's two in one and probably the only way I'll eat an omelette besides my mom's version with tomatoes and chinese sausage embedded in runny eggs... it's soo good over rice with some maggi soy sauce. The omelette here is cooked perfectly thin wrapping up well seasoned pad thai made with bean thread noodles. It's really, really good. They serve it with a mound of sugar and chili flakes and lime on the side so you can alter it for your taste after squeezing lime all over it. Perfection. Sadly, I did ask for mine with no bean sprouts but got bean sprouts on the side and on the inside. No =/= on the side. It means No. No means NO. Jesus Christ. It's like some horn ball two timing whore that already has a girlfriend who can't take no for an answer and think they can weasel their way into your heart and vagina with pathetic puppy dog eyes, making you drop your underwear for them. Not gonna happen. When I'm a dead rotting corpse maybe. With bugs having already gobbled up my eyeballs out of my eye sockets yet still hangin around, rolling around in that empty hole of mine. Because your ESL teacher failed you. When I first saw my dish come out I just thought okay fine, at least it's on the side but opening up the wrapped omelette I found me some bean sprouts. GAG. Needless to say I was livid. I told them the problem and sent it back and just got up and told them to wrap it up to go cuz I gotta go back to work. I heard the waitress tell the cooks to leave it on the side and I had to say NO beansprouts at all! I don't want any of that shit. Not for now, and not for later. I'm allergic I exclaimed! (which is a lie) but I needed to make sure that there's none of that shit in my dish. For real people no means no God dammit. So if you have any real allergies, I'd double check if I were you. The manager/owner came up to me and apologized profusely and gave me a free appetizer card so that was nice they acknowledged their mistake. I had my bean sprout free pad thai omelette with shrimp, extra spicy and it was glorious. Extra spicy is more like mild if you like spicy. I hope to return again very soon but for the love of simple requests-- I hope they hear it loud and clear from me next time at the risk of sounding condescending even. No bean sprouts means none better be hanging around on my plate anywhere. Since they fixed it I'll give them what they deserve- 4 stars. I was quite excited for some Tac Quick once I sat down and surveyed my surroundings... spacious, clean, somewhat modern space. And, I appreciate Tac Quick's candor: it's stated loud and proud on the menu that the only kind of crab that will be making it in your rangoons is the imitation variety. Fine by us, no rangoon snobbery going on here! However, the rangoon were woefully average. Next up: Tom Kha soup. Wow. As Colleen mentions, it was the bright spot of our meal. Really, a delight. The Pad Thai, however, was a bit lackluster... just missing something, a little off. And then the tea snafu per Miss CC's review-- SIGH. Tac Quick serves up some of the best Thai food in the city--you just have to know where to look for it. Skip most of the menu they give you and ask for the Thai menu, as this is where Tac Quick really shines. My dining companion and I came here last night for a late dinner. When I walked in, I was surprised by how swank it was. Sleek tables, chic woodwork on the bar, and low lighting made Tac Quick one of the nicer places in which I've had the pleasure of dining in the last few weeks. We were seated at one of the tables in the back, pulled out our bottle of wine (BYOB! And there's a liquor store three or four doors down!) and the server immediately brought us glasses and a bottle opener. We were perusing the menu they gave us and realized that we needed to ask for the Thai menu to fully know what we wanted to order. The Thai menu is translated, but without prices (the prices, we found out later, are comparable to the other menu). We settled on an order of pork neck (specials chalkboard), papaya salad with salt crab (Thai menu), duck curry (specials chalkboard), and pa lo (Thai menu). The food started coming out just 10 or so minutes later. The pork neck was intensely flavorful, rich and charred, and came with a sweet scallion dipping sauce. I loved every bite of this and hope it makes it onto the regular menu. Papaya salad with salt crab was probably my least favorite dish of the night, though it was still very good. It was spicy (too spicy for my boyfriend, fine for me) and funky (love that fish sauce) with plenty of little tiny dried shrimp and salt crab. My duck curry was filled with rich duck breast and creamy coconut milk. The curry also contained pineapple and green grapes, which were a clean, tangy contrast to the richness of the duck. The pa lo was really interesting--it had braised pork belly, tofu fritters, and hard boiled eggs in a star anise flavored sauce. The textures in the dish were outstanding and unique. While everything was soft, the pork belly was melt-in-your-mouth tender, the tofu fritters were light and creamy, and the hard boiled eggs were chewy. Very, very good. I can't resist anything in banana leaves, so for dessert we got the sticky rice with banana steamed in the banana leaf. Yum. A nice, light way to end our ridiculously decadent meal. We stuffed ourselves with food for about $35. I am already thinking about my next trip to sample more things from their menu(s). read more

For anyone who hasn't figured it out, food you get delivered is never as good as food you eat in. I look at the photos from Tac Quick -- taken by Yelpers -- and everything looks so good. The food I get delivered is generally pretty ordinary. Still, people I respect rave about the place. So somewhere between Sheridan and Irving and Clark and Argyle, the magic disappears. Tac is quick. The food generally shows up in 30 minutes or less. Just like the old Dominos ads. And the quality is good, but nothing special. Except the tod mun (fish cakes), which are as good as any I've ever had. So Tac, for now I will make plans to visit you in person. And order off the special menu, which seems to be the key. And then update accordingly. But Spoon will remain my go-to delivery place. read more

I came here once by myself and had an okay time, considering the delectable food and unbearable amount of Mariah Carey being played. They sat me in weird spot in the corner, away from everyone, and the table was backed so far in that I had no choice but to sit facing the window... like I was the lonely bad kid in time out. When the server came I would have to fully turn around to order. The Tom Yum soup was one of the best I'd ever had and the spicy basil was okay but nothing that would get me craving Tac Quick again. The service was slow and one thing that at first amused me... then made me want to run for the hills: they played only Mariah Carey the entire time... and then when the disc was over and you'd think you were in the clear, they'd just restart the entire cd. It's like that yall, like that yall, like th,th, th,th, like that yall. Never again. I like a little Mariah, but cannot take a heavy dose like that. The food also didn't have enough spice and I asked for a bit extra but defo wasn't noticeable. I hate to pee on everyone's Tac Quick parade, but this place was subpar at best. I have mentioned before that I am a Thai food hooch, and this was yet another notch on my belt that I was ever so excited for. I even shaved my legs for my big date with Tac. Turns out I didn't get the bang for the buck I was expecting. I hate it when that happens! I would like to take a moment to describe the ambiance during my first rendezvous with Tac Quick. The light was low, which was about the only good part. The place was clean but there wasn't much to it. Just as I was starting to come around and get in the mood..... Britney Spears Greatest Hits started playing on the sound system. I would also like to mention that in the span of time that we were there they also played Mariah Carey and Gloria Estephan. Seriously. This should have been a deal breaker from the get go. From the minute we walked in the door, the place seemed cold and unwelcoming. We were seated at the table directly in front of the door and when I asked to me moved to another area, I was told that there was a large party coming in and they would not move us. No large party ever came in. The place is BYOB, and my dining companions and I had a few bottles of our favorite libations to enjoy with our meal which were all opened promptly. We ordered some appetizers; 2 out of three came out correctly. The crab Rangoon was just ok. It was mostly Rangoon, not a lot of crab. The potstickers were good and served with a delicious sauce. We ordered the spicy basil rolls but I think we ended up with spring rolls instead and they were not impressive at all. Soggy and slimy in a runny sweet sauce with no flavor. Now it was time for the big shebang. For my main course, I ordered my all time favorite; Panang noodles with chicken. You really can't go wrong with this dish. Until now. This was the worst part of my experience here. First off, it was served atop soggy lettuce. The noodles were so over cooked they tasted like the shell of burnt crab Rangoon. I know that this dish is traditionally served on crispy noodles, but the point is so that the curry sauce softens the noodles. Not on this dish. I couldn't even cut through some of the noodles they were so crispy. And with all of the yapping and drinking I was doing, even by the end of the meal, the noodles never got soft. The flavor of the curry was decent, although not my favorite by any means. There was barely any chicken in the dish either. I have to say, upon finishing this meal I was really unsatisfied. As long as it's fresh, I can enjoy most any Thai food and this was just plain bad. And like any bad notch in the belt, this place won't find a spot in my little black book ever again. read more

3.5 stars. The food was decent. The service was very slooow. The crab rangoon wasn't bad but it wasn't amazing either, just standard fair. I had the Pad Ped which was a good choice. Stir-fried basil leaves, peapods, bell peppers, jalapenos and eggplants adorned the plate along with chicken in a lovely red curry sauce that was presented in an artistic way. Just enough to fill up my belly. My only complaint was that I wished my dish was spicier. I know you all look at me weird when I say I would like this dish to be Thai spicy, but when I say I want it spicy I mean SPICY! Maybe not burn my mouth off spicy, but something above and beyond what I would call medium spice, thank you very much. I do know my spice thresholds and wouldn't ask for something that I wouldn't be able to handle. Just sayin'. read more

TAC Quick is a nice change of pace from the bazillion other Thai places in the neighborhood. We wanted to try something off the "secret" menu and went with the Kai Thawt, which was a fried chicken appetizer. The dipping sauce was really pungent - like with a really strong vinegar aroma - but tasted great. The chicken itself was extremely succulent and I loved the marinade/dry rub. I went with Panang tofu as my entree. The curry was much thicker than I'm used to and had sort of a peanutty taste - it was tasty but just not what I was expecting for "Panang Curry." (I don't mean that in a bad way). The other dishes we ordered were Basil Tofu, Pad Ped (red curry), and Ba Mee Pad (thin noodles w/ shrimp/chicken/veggies). I was quite pleased with the samples I tried off everyone's plates :) Don't expect to take home leftovers - the portions are definitely sized for one meal only - but it's a great value, and BYOB! If you're an adventurous diner, ask to take a look at the Thai menu - they had some really interesting dishes. When you order from the special Thai menu (you can see it on their website tacquick.net), you simply can't go wrong. I can't explain why you have to ask the waitress for the menu, they really should just give it to you when you walk in the door. But do yourself a favor and save the pad thai, pad see yew, and masamun curry for your favorite local Thai place. When you make a special trip to TAC quick, and you really should if you like Thai food, then ask for the Thai menu and stick to it. If you've heard of it before, odds are TAC Quick doesn't do it any better than your favorite place. The only dish you should order off the regular menu is the crispy on choy. Man that dish is outstanding. Bitter, nutty green battered in a fluffy tempura fried to a beautiful crispy texture. It's really a special dish. Like I said, there are no misses on the Thai menu. The boat noodles are made with soft, thin noodles and a deep, exceptionally beefy (with plenty of anise) broth. The moo ping bursts with bbq flavor. The green curry with Thai eggplant served over an omelet has creamy coconut flavor and the eggs are perfectly fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside. All the salads are exceptionally bright, loaded with lime juice and fish sauce. You just can't go wrong. I should also add, TAC Quick and Spoon Thai are totally different, but equally good. Same deal at both, order from the Thai menu and you're all set, but there are few dishes that are the same. I think it's really cool that Chicago has multiple authentic Thai restaurants to choose from. read more

They do make mine a little special since I'm allergic to cilantro, but very tasty. The Pad Thai is great, but the rangoons can be hit or miss. ehhhhhhhhhh. My coworker really wanted to go here and order on the secret menu. The menu isn't secret. It is the menu they hand you and it says "secret menu". Well, ok. We order drinks and waited. Someone came and took our order and I'll just be honest, I just pointed at one thing that seemed to be ok because I wasn't overly interested in any of it and I can't have rice or noodles so my options were limited. The meal was actually really good but I have no idea what it was. I sipped the broth of my coworker's soup and it was delicious but, whooooo, spicy and I like spicy and there was not enough water. It's amazing that Tac Quick is close to 5 stars. I agree with one of the previous reviewers that their food lacks definition and character -- the curries are not flavorful enough, the appetizers are just run-of-the-mill -- and there isn't a single item which I've tried in my 5+ visits in the past year that stands out as something that I'd think of as a destination item (that is, will compell me to drive +2 miles to get). What Tac Quick has going for it is its location. I think that it's one of the very few options within a 1/2 mile radius from Sheridan Red Line station (but there are a few places up and down Broadway - equally mediocre), so it's a convenient place to go for a quick Thai fix if you live in the area. However, there are far better options within a couple of miles -- Thai Pastry near Argyle comes to mind. read more

You used to pamper me with your tasty, fast, cheap, authentic, lovely deliciousness... the feel of your perfectly textured noodles, the taste of your sensually balanced panang....those were beautiful times... We met when you moved in and became my neighbor and you exceeded every expectation I could have possibly dreamt of.... you were loyal and sweet... always there when I needed you... my perfect match.... but I had to move away and you expanded, but I wasn't ready to delete your number from my phone. My loyal stomach kept me coming back to you... Recently though, I can tell you don't have that special feeling for me anymore. You've changed. That soggy, tasteless pad thai, the bad pot stickers (what have you done??!!?? they didn't used to be like this and my last order of them was BURNED) and painfully slow delivery time are breaking my heart. Your last order of egg rolls was decent, but thats just not enough to keep me hanging on to this lost love affair. I think its best for both of us if we just move on. I'm sure there will probably be a couple more late-night calls, and you'll knock on my door (after a lengthy wait and much teasing that you are on your way), then I'll take you inside and ravish you. I come down here when I want to get out of the hood and grab some yummy thai food. It has been my experience that all of the food at Tac is good. The Pad Thai is really great and what it should be. The curries could have a little more sauce to them but are damn delicious. The portions aren't huge- which I actually like. Service-wise, this place is rough. On two separate occasions i've been either ignored or borderline scoffed at. Once they simply rejected a foursquare check-in coupon that we presented, as if they hadn't posted it. As if it wasn't in our hand for her to see. Who does that? Every restaurant should accept a coupon, even if expired. That's just bad service. But i'm easy going and I like the food so I will take this place for what it is...returning infrequently. read more

WOW, This is my new favorite Thai restaurant. Go there now. Ask for the thai menu and be adventurous with your ordering and you'll get a fantastic and authentic meal without the 20 hr. plane trip to Bangkok. The "secret" menu is in both Thai and English so don't be shy. It is full of all the dishes I grew up with that are sadly lacking in most Thai restaurants. They do things "Thai-spicy" here so proceed with caution. I ordered everything "medium" and it still had us all sweating. We ordered the Moo Ping (pork skewers) Som Tum (Papaya Salad), Gang Som Cha Om Tod (sour curry soup with egg omelet), Pad WoonSen Haw Kai (Pad thai wrapped in an omelet) and Kao Kah-moo (tender braised ham hock). All the dishes were an A+ and the best I've had in Chicago. I can NOT believe I've lived here for so long without discovering this place. I'll be back to try everything on the menu, I've got my eye on the Pa-Lo (5 spice soup), Kao Mun Gai, and Chive dumplings... We also had the custard dessert and sticky rice with banana which were okay but both too oily for my taste. So don't bother saving room for dessert. read more

After walking into a chic, trendy looking Thai place, I was extremely disappointed with the cuisine. I went for lunch and after seeing no lunch specials on the menu, my fellow diner asked the waiter who politely listed off the combos which included one of maybe 6 entrees and either an egg roll or spring roll, costing around $6. Easy enough. I went with the fried rice since I wasn't feeling especially noodley, the egg roll, and a ginger ale (which they were sadly out of). The egg roll was delightful and the dipping sauce they served with it had a pleasant kick to it. The fried rice was beyond bland. It basically looked and tasted like overcooked white rice with egg stirred it. Not fried at all. I tried adding what I thought was soy sauce (that I personally retrieved from the serving bar since I couldn't catch the waiter's attention... Not the biggest deal) to add some flavor to it, which was a BIG mistake. Even though the jar was clearly labeled Kikkoman (or however you spell it), it tasted nothing like soy sauce. I, of course, had stupidly put it over the majority of my rice. The combination ended up tasting like, well, crotch funk. It was disgusting and I couldn't choke it down. Thankfully, they allowed me to send the dish back for a mediocre plate of pad see ewe which was better, but still not great. This courtesy is the only thing aside from the egg roll that earned this place 2 stars. I won't be back to Tac Quick... Mediocre (at best) food, slow but kind service, and unexceptional prices... I moved to Chicago after living in San Francisco my whole life, and while I didn't expect to have great Asian food offered everywhere like in the Bay Area I also was surprised at how few authentic places I've run across so far. Fear not -- Tac Quick is one place to quench my tongue's homesickness. (Of course the food in this city is great and I've got nothing to complain about, but you can't blame an Asian dude for missing his grub!) The atmosphere is chill: house music, dim lights, not very loud inside. The service is great, and what's best is that it's just yards away from the Sheridan stop on the Red line. Order everything from their secret menu! The one caveat is that their papaya salad is ridiculously spicy and so unless you're a glutton for pain tell them to tone it down. My number one favorite is their boat noodles: beef brisket and tendon in a thick broth with thin egg noodles. I'm a soup + noodle kinda guy, and this is where I go when I'm craving it. In fact, since I haven't found any pho places I can take the train to easily, this is my go-to spot for Sunday morning hangovers just for these noodles. Everything else is great too: try their chicken skewers with peanut sauce. Have only been in big groups, and in the process have had small portions of about 2/3 of the secret menu and I cannot say there's one dish that I wouldn't mind having a whole plate of to myself. read more

Hit or miss with the entrees for me, including those on the "secret menu". Apps, cucumber salad and smoothies are solid. I've been here several times, ordered pick up and delivery from here as well. Tac Quick is okayy....the restaurant is cute and right off the Red Line, plus it's next to a liquor store, ( a nice place to be for a spot that's BYOB, if you ask me). But again, every entree I have ordered from here has sounded a lot better than it has tasted. read more

Really liked this place. Server was so nice. We were talking for like, 30 minutes before reading the menu, and she didn't mind that we were never ready to order! Crab rangoon was yummy. I also liked my ginger entree. What I usually get at thai places. Something about the atmosphere is what did it for me. I found it to be a perfectly sized space, and so totally aesthetically pleasing. It's no wonder we were talking for so long! I will surely be back when in the hood! read more

Found this gem on Eater 38 list, came here on a Friday evening around 7pm and was able to be seated immediately (party of 2). Based on other Yelp reviews we tried the "secret menu" and tried 3 dishes: 1) Kuay Teaw Kleua Kai - wide rice noodle with chicken, onion and leaf lettuce served with Sriracha sauce 2) Pad Pong Kari Talay - Karee curry with shrimp and squid in coconut milk 3) Kra Prao Kha Moo-Stir fried red braised pork hock with basil By far the Karee curry dish (2) was our favorite, there were giant pieces of squid and the texture of the curry with coconut milk was perfect! Portion sizes were big. Service was excellent, waitress brought us hot water given the cold weather without a fuss. Did not realize it was a BYOB and definitely will be back some beverages next time! read more
