BEAUTIFUL BREAD Tabor Bread is currently operating out of the parking lot behind the shop they're remodeling on Belmont in Portland. It's ridiculously expensive - $7 for a chocolate croissant! Seriously? - but it's so delicious. The croissants are light, flaky, and made with sourdough. The chocolate is premium. Loaves of bread prices are on par with many bakeries and taste even better. We got a bagel with cream cheese because we are on the hunt for the best bagel in Portland and honestly it was very good. Some of the pastries and bread are very good. Customer service is terrible. Very chaotic. Lot's of employees behind the counter going in circles around each other. They don't know how to manage the line of customers. Employees don't say thank you when I THANK THEM for handing me my order. Downright rude owner and employees. Now they have instituted a 15% "service charge" so they can pay their employees an equitable wage. I AM ALL FOR PAYING EMPLOYEES fairly but I think it is better to factor that into your prices so customers know the actual cost. No one likes seeing a posted price for an item and then being charged a non optional fee on top of the price. It just feels bad and weird. Returned to find they've sadly left their old space, but I'm so so happy to hear that tabor bread is rolling with the changes they're going through. Happy to see them land on their feet, and in my opinion, they're just as good as ever. This time, we picked up some croissants (still the best tasting I've ever had), chocolate croissants, the oat cookie (oof that chewiness!), Focaccia and some bagels and cream cheese. First time having the bagels and boy is the texture amazing, especially the herb and cheese. It's crispy on the outside and perfectly proofed inside, giving you substantial sourdough weight and chew, yet an airiness, without losing any moisture. Perfection. Was a little unsure why they had a winter focaccia in late May though. But still delicious nonetheless. I do miss their outside tables and bathrooms, but alas. I fasted for bloodwork and took my hunger for coffee and food to this famous Portland Bakery and was so happy. Fasting makes you appreciate every morsel. The chocolate croissant was made with sourdough flour. I could taste cinnamon but the star was the chocolate and flaky layers. I tried to capture this perfect croissant with my iphone and only approached the correct image. You just have to taste the perfection. I had a great baguette sandwich for my actual lunch. It was hearty and well designed with perfect grainy mustard, ham and micro greens plus tiny crunchy cornichons. The coffee was so mellow my caffeine receptors have been sated. I love this bakery. we were having some friends over for Hungarian Mushroom Soup and the-woman-who-lets-me-live-with-her (thanks Mike) thought that turkey sandwiches would be a nice accompaniment so I immediately went out for the fixins. Loved Tabor Bakery. Too many cupcake shops in the world right now and not enough places that make really, really good bread. This is one of them. I only tried the Cinnamon Sugar Morning Bun (non-gooey cinnamon roll) but if it is representative of the rest of the offerings, then this place is a gem. Enough sugar, still granular, blended perfectly with the cinnamon, rolled in an enriched dough that parted graciously between the teeth. Sometimes the quality of the dough is lost amidst all of the gooeyness of a traditional sticky bun or cinnamon roll but here it really had the chance to shine, tender, slightly sweet, just lovely. I might have chosen Rye bread for the sandwiches but it was Tuesday and they don't make rye until Wednesday (and apparently they have special days, like this coming Friday, when they make even more special breads, like caraway rye). I opted for the red wheat bread over the seeded red wheat bread because the latter does not rise as high and I wanted good-sized sandwiches. Yeasty, rich with that earthy taste you associate with red wheat (hard kernel, winter wheat), the bread was wonderfully soft on the inside with a chewy crust. I'll be back for the caraway rye in a few days, but at first visit, this is a place that I will mark on my map of sources for when I am looking for something special. read more

I have no problem standing in line for aprox 10 min asking for my bread and they stick it in a bag and I pay then throw a $1.00 in the Tip jar. But .... last thurs when I ordered my bread very quickly heard "we are adding a %15 on orders". Really??? And they still have tip jar out! I say NO! They have lost my business! I really like their bread, bagels, and sandwiches here. Coffee isn't great and their pastries are hit or miss for me. There are a few other things that knock this down from a five star experience. Their supply is totally unreliable. I have come in after 12:00 and they have not had their sandwiches ready for the day and quoted another hour. When I drive across town to get sandwiches and they haven't even made them for the day.... I'm just confused as to how this even happens. And it's happened multiple times. But then sometimes you come at open and they have sandwiches. Their supply of bread and pastries is also totally unreliable, as in they will sell out sometimes within an hour of opening. So if I come early, I can't get sandwiches, but if I come late, I risk them being totally 100% sold out of all bread and pastries? I've journeyed to the storefront probably a half dozen times now and walked out empty handed. This is just too unreliable for me. Lastly, their prices are just too high. They ask for tips AND have a mandatory health insurance charge that is a % on all items. So not only are the items priced pretty high, but the prices advertised aren't even ultimately correct due to fees on top. You basically don't know this until / if you get a receipt. They also don't have a bread slicer or a way to heat up quiche. There are too many awesome bakeries in Portland to keep coming back here. I want to love Tabor, but I just don't read more

This place is supremely overrated. First you come in and they have bread literally right next to the line and people are brushing up against it with their backpacks or coats which is nasty. I came here today hoping to find challah bread or brioche to make French toast. The menu online didn't seem to show a list of breads, just daily specials so that was confusing. They didn't have either bread since it's not the daily special...however they did have several other options that all looked great. I got the oat porridge bread which I used for my French toast and I was actually extremely impressed! The bread has a nice coating of oats and the inside was extremely fluffy and tender. It worked quiet well for my French toast and didn't get soggy, but instead was cooked to perfection. Other options they had for sale was an assortment of pastries (even vegan ones!), some oats, stuffing and coffee. The dirty chai latte was made with local chai that has a spicy aftertaste. I stopped in here after seeing it on the way to Never Coffee. It was very cute and there was a visible line. There is a large assortment of pastries and bread to choose from. They all start at about $6 which is a little wild. I didn't expect to see a passionfruit donut so I got that. I came in with ambitions to find a chocolate croissant. The passionfruit donut is huge. The glaze is very sour and sweet. The bread is a bit more dense than expected but spongy and soft, more like bread in texture. The chocolate croissant looked a little burnt on the outside. It was very VERY flaky and started to lose the whole top layer when touched and took it out. It was super messy. The chocolate was not spread out evenly but bunched. The chocolate itself was a very nice dark chocolate. I wish it could've been warmed up a bit. The bread of the croissant was oddly sour. It was darker in color as well almost like a different flour than I'm used to. I'm not sure I would ever seek out this croissant, especially for $6. There seemed to be a 5% tax of some sort as well as I was charged $12.60 for two items. Would've been nice to know what that was for. I can make this review one of my shortest. If you want good bread - the way to tabor bread can't be to long. (Period, I could end here). But i will not since Tabor also overs very unique pastry and have sandwiches. They also do their flour milling them self and you can taste it. I stopped by Tabor Bread during a lovely morning stroll in the Mt. Tabor neighborhood. Tabor Bread offers some of the most deletable pastries I've laid my eyes on. They offer sourdough croissants that provide a unique take on the classic go-to and a breadth of danish and savory pastries. I tried the chocolate sourdough croissant, passionfruit bun, chocolate chip cookie, and grabbed a black sesame loaf for the road. The passionfruit bun might be the best sweet I've had this year, perfect balance of sweet and savory. The bun didnt skimp on the filling, which is a great thing because the passionfruit filling was outstanding. In addition to great pastries and ambiance, the service was great. The folks working there will do their best to help you decide on which items to get because you are going to struggle to make a decision and want to buy everything. Strongly recommend. read more

SO GOOD. An unassuming bakery near the tail end of Hawthorne, Tabor Bread may not seem like much, but their all-natural leavened sourdough breads and pastries give the more well-known bakeries of Portland a run for their money. I came on a late Tuesday morning, and they were still pretty busy! While most of the customers took their orders to go, they offer indoor bar seating and picnic tables outside. I LOVE sourdough, and I opted for their breakfast bagel sandwich on a sesame bagel. I also got an oatmilk cortado (they feature Push and Pull coffee!) I do feel however their prices are a bit steep compared to other bakeries in Portland (hence, minus a star). The sandwich was $14 and the cortado was $4.50. The bagel was so good! I don't like dense bagels, but Tabor Bread delivered! Tangy, chewy, not too dense, nor did it taste just like bread in bagel form, it had a nice crunchy exterior loaded with sesame seeds, they nailed it. The eggs and bacon provided a texture contrast and were not overly salty. The cortado was smooth, but the espresso was a bit bitter. Not sure if I would get it again. I'll probably stick to their baked goods next time (their cakes and pastries looked absolutely divine!) If Tabor Bread isn't on your next carb venture, add it to the list!! read more

Overall, very good pastries and bread in part because they use great grains. Occasionally they have an off pastry that I don't enjoy. I really like their bagels. Their new location doesn't have a bathroom and you can't get anything "for here" aka on a plate or in a real coffee mug. I don't really like getting my pastries or coffee to go. There's always a long line and even longer wait to get prepared bagels. I would probably give them 4.5 stars if it wasn't for their insane prices. They also add a 5% charge for "health insurance" for their staff. I really hate service charges. Just ask the price you need and let consumers decide. And then they ask for tips on top of it at the end. 2 breakfast bagels and 2 pastries easily end up being $50. The cheese spread inside made the pastry almost gummy/mushy. The cheese choices are too acidic for the acidic dough. Blueberry cream cheese: 3/5. The cheese is sour, the dough is sour. Sadness. When I eat a danish or croissant, I expect the butteriness first and followed by and enhanced by flavor. Unfortunately, I feel that these pastries were not balanced...the sourdough component was too strong, they were not flaky nor buttery, the flavors didn't enhance the pastry and the sourness really overtook the pastries (and I'm usually a fan of sour).
