I was searching for a restaurant with traditional Portuguese cuisine, and this place hit the spot! It was our first meal in the city, and I was not disappointed. When we arrived, there was only one other table, and I was concerned it wouldn't be good, but it was 4 pm, a little too late for lunch and early for dinner, so I'm glad we came at a time it wasn't busy. The waitress was so lovely and explained all the different dishes in English and didn't skip a beat. It was super helpful that she took the time to explain it. All the dishes were a hit and so flavorful, beautifully plated, and fresh! It was also very affordable too!

5 stars food and service! We tried the tapas, fried fish and the fried chicken. All of them were delicious flavors! The red sangria - amazing! The Fado music in the background amazing! The place just filled up in minutes after we walked in. The servers were so nice to us - we accidentally broke a glass and she was so accommodating. The owner came to meet us at the end and offered a complimentary port wine shot! Can't complain at all! If I come to Lisboa again, will surely pay a visit here!

The food was amazing. The service was fast even though we didn't have a reservation! The sangria and salmon with veggies were just as if it was caught! So fresh! The ambiance is street level and has indoor seating but you're in Europe and you it's a must to be outside!

Really good food. Not overly flavored, just delicate and perfectly cooked. The dourada grelhada, paella and sangria was delicious but the sangria wasn't as strong as some in the US lol

Nestled in a picturesque cobblestone street, Taberna do Bairro Alto is a humble, unassuming eatery that might be small in size, but is undeniably gigantic in flavor and authenticity. While it doesn't boast fancy decor, it compensates -- and how! -- with dishes that are bold and incredibly well-realized. On two consecutive evenings, I found myself irresistibly drawn back. The grilled prawns, bursting with garlic and peri peri goodness, demanded an encore on our second visit. The octopus, tender to perfection and married to roasted potatoes, seemed to sing the songs of the sea on our plates. The garden salads on both nights were a fresh counterpart to our sumptuous main courses. And what better way to wash down these culinary masterpieces than with generous half liters of Sagres beer? After days of wandering the enchanting streets of Lisbon, Taberna do Bairro Alto offered the quintessential Portuguese experience, blending simplicity with an undeniable richness of flavor. If you're seeking an authentic taste of Portugal, look no further. This gem might be modest, but it dazzles where it truly counts.

I did see a small sign with "Bairrices", so I went inside and followed the path. To get to the restaurant, I had to go through a door that led outside. Then the restaurant was on the right. I opted to sit outside and the server explained the menu to us in English. Basically you get served all 22 dishes plus dessert (see photo with yellow paper) for 22€ per person. If you end up liking any of them, you can order them again - as many as you want. Some dishes were cold, some were hot. The fried squid was my favorite. There weren't any that I hated, but like the server said, everyone's preference is different. There will be some dishes that you don't like. I never felt pressured to finish everything that was served. It was like a small (and affordable) tasting menu! Drinks cost separate. I highly recommend the sangria! For only 3€ you get a liter. It was so delicious, but also on the sweet side. The server was so nice and spoke English, which was very helpful. There is a small restroom next to the register inside the restaurant. I was able to pay with Apple Pay. They have free WiFi!

Having experienced fado outside of Portugal I didn't feel strongly that it was a must-do, but when I found myself at night on the street that is known for fado I prioritized it. For the best fado experience I recommend an intimate space, hopefully crowded with people but also with a view to the performers. Tasca do Chico is exactly that place. The doorman told us that space was standing room only, at the (tiny) bar. From there we could see and hear the performers while ordering food and drink. We'd not been there long before we were offered an available seat at a table which caused us to order more food and drink and stay a little longer. The fado here is quite good, made even more enjoyable as the artists change quite frequently; a song or two and a new artist steps forward, all very talented and enjoyable to watch and hear. The fado places tend to have lines out the door and a doorman managing entry. A place across the street looked much bigger but the intimacy is, in my opinion, what makes the experience both unique and special. Even if you have to start at the bar, Tasca do Chico is a great place to experience fado.

On the bright side, I met some new friends in line, and honestly, it was worth it even though I hoped the wait was shorter. The drinks and performances were incredible and exceeded my expectations. It's a small place so the performances felt very intimate, what a memorable night! Just a heads up: they only take cash, so don't make the same mistake I did. Cheers!

The food across the board was excellent--every dish we tried was flavorful, well-prepared, and felt thoughtfully put together. You can tell there's real intention behind both the menu and execution. What really elevated the experience, though, was our waiter, Bernardo. He brought incredible energy to the table--full of personality, engaging, and genuinely fun to interact with. At the same time, his service was top-notch: attentive without being overbearing, helpful with recommendations, and clearly passionate about what he does. Great food is one thing, but when you pair it with service like that, it turns into a memorable experience. Highly recommend--and if you get Bernardo, you're in for a great time.

I had read in Yelp that lines could be long, but we arrived early. They have a little red rope at the door where they explain the rules. The interior is kind of eclectic. They have wines at three price points, we got a really nice bottle of red called Pops reserve. For the tapas, we ordered the assorted cheeses, octopus risotto, duck breast with chips (not normally on the menu), and ceviche. All were superb. We started with the duck and ceviche. The duck was braised perfectly and seasoned well, wonderful. Then the ceviche had swordfish and tuna. I am not normally a sword fan, but this was very tasty. Next up were the cheese and risotto. The risotto was incredible, buttery and delicious. The cheese plate had 5 cheeses of different intensity. All were great, particularly the goat ones. It came with a pumpkin jam which I had never had before, but was very good. I definitely recommend this place

Sadly, when we went and I said I needed to be gluten-free and asked if they had a separate menu when I only saw three items the server said "We really don't have a lot." ...then why is it advertised in huge letters on the sign outside? Felt strange. The service was exceptional of course - none of this at all is a condemnation of the employees - they were all great and attentive and helpful... I just think the advertising of the menu and branding needs... some rework? The check arrived with major sticker shock for fries, wings, and sangria (that was way way too sweet). We spend a good amount of our disposable income on dining out, with intent, and the value ratio for this one was... off. Environment? Very chill neighborhood "burger bar" type place.
