Some memories are best left in the past.
It pains me to leave this review, since I used to love this place. Had Yelp been around a decade ago, I would've been giving it a 5-star review. Alas, it is unfortunately no longer deserving of such praise.
Let's start with the good: I still love the space itself. Very cozy. The owner and our waiter were very friendly, as always. Great wine selection (200+ bottles).
I used to live within walking distance of Taberna, and when it first opened I went there on a regular basis, especially during the summer months, where my friends and I would spend hours upon hours (and pitchers of sangria upon pitchers of sangria) sitting at one of the outside tables, having a truly enjoyable and good time catching up (which is what a tapas dining experience is all about). I've tried everything on the menu at one point in time or another, and while I certainly had my favorite dishes (like the pulpo and the lamb skewers), everything on the menu was good.
After moving to NY many, many moons ago, (which has it's own fair share of excellent tapas restaurants), I still had Taberna cravings, but I rarely made it back to the Boston area to indulge. Until this weekend. Keep in mind as well that I've been raving to my wife about how good this place was for the last 6 or 7 years. The meal we had, however, was so mediocre and underwhelming that I felt almost embarrassed that we had eaten here rather than some of the other restaurants I was thinking about for dinner instead (Blue Ginger, Scampo, Summer Shack, etc). I think I definitely lost some foodie cred in my wife's eyes for taking her here.
The warm goat cheese on bread was the first item to arrive, and the only item I enjoyed. From there it just went downhill. The pulpo, which used to melt in your mouth, was dry, chewy, not at all well-seasoned, and the portion size was significantly smaller than I recall. The sauteed artichoke hearts were okay...but just okay...easily forgettable and not remotely as good as I remembered. The crimini mushrooms were bland...I could barely taste the garlic, and they needed more salt. The Patatas Bravas needed more salt, the insides were mealy, and the sauce tasted like nothing more than a buffalo wing sauce mixed with mayonnaise (I recall it being a different type of sauce altogether). The oxtail was cooked okay, but once again, it needed to be seasoned better. I used to practically lick the plates clean here. This time, however, we only ate half of what we ordered. I never do that...ever. I always clear my plates. Or at least bring the leftovers home.
None of our food was bad...but none of it was good either. Compared to how good it used to be, however, it was almost insultingly bad. I'd like to think that perhaps they were just having an off night...but given how infrequently I make it back to the Boston area, I'm never going to waste my time or money trying to find out. read more
