This is a cafeteria style place, where we got a chicken salad and a smothered chicken with a side of potatoes and yam and okra over rice. All in all, the smothered chicken was good! It was as expected. Nothing amazingly special about it, but not bad either. The salad was drenched in some salty sauce, and we ended up leaving half because it was hard to eat. This was an unfortunate send off meal for visiting family. I'd heard it was great and it has good reviews. And honestly some.of our food wasn't bad. But our service was terrible, while they weren't at all busy, and our food wasnt at all what we ordered because the waitress didn't tell us many things she should have. For example, we asked for a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich, and she said they have that. But when it came, it was half a sandwich (and on too thick bread). I asked why it was a half and she said they don't make sandwiches, they make biscuits, so they did that for us. We should have been told that from the start. And why can't you give me a whole sandwich in place of a biscuit? How much does that extra slice of bread really cost? My poor aunt ordered biscuits and gravy. What a mess. I understand it's Cajun and well seasoned, but the extra dousing of PAPRIKA all over it was just bizarre and gross. After 10 years in La., I've never known a covering of paprika to be Cajun. The lunch bar looked pretty good, but now I wonder. We also saw an employee fill a to-go container with food and then take out something, a fry I think, and eat it herself before closing the lid. Need to give this place some serious love. I'm not from Cajun-country so I was asking around and heard great reviews for T-Coon's. If it says anything about the way they treat their guests I got there fifteen minutes before and still had smiling, hospitable hosts. The lady behind the counter was pretty animated and made one of my few Cajun food experiences that much better. Now the food. Smothered potatoes. They didn't even look like potatoes, but they tasted heavenly. Just know you need a nap after. Plus some catfish (the word for it idk, but ask for the catfish dish) in a nice sauce with shrimp over rice. Solid size for $10. If you're in Lafayette, give this place a go. I gave this place 4 stars only because you can't do half stars and because when you walk in, there is no direction if you have never been there before. If they staff happens to see you walk in, they will tell you to sit anywhere you like and a server will be with you, then it is finding a table. Once seated, you will wait a little bit before a server comes and walks by and asks what to get you to drink and bring you a menu (don't forget to ask for silverware). Then it will be a little bit before they come back and take your order. Once your order has finally been taken, it wont take long before your food arrives and all thag waiting will be worth it as the food is outstanding. Great down home flavor. We ordered breakfast but it was in the transition from breakfast to lunch so they had the lunch counter set up that you could walk through the line cafeteria style and pick out what you wanted. Looks like they had great lunch specials during the week. I even spotted some home baked yeast rolls like the king you use to get back in school. You may not eat anything else from the school but you would fight to the death if someone tried taking you roll. First time at T-Coons was a great experience. It's a cafeteria style restaurant with all home cooked Cajun food. I came on a Monday and tried the smothered rabbit and I'm glad I did! It was seasoned perfect and the rabbit was pretty tender. Decent portions and it came with two sides. I would not recommend the coleslaw, it was mediocre at best, not much flavor or sauce. The fried food is fried to order so you will have a few minute wait on that but it comes hot, straight from the grease. I'd like to come back and give the breakfast a try. read more

Visited in November as I was cutting through Louisiana for a cross country move. The majority of patrons seemed like they are long-time customers and the servers were friendly as well. I went in during lunch for crawfish etouffee and it was served cafeteria-style - I grabbed a tray and utensils then lined up, and the server scooped rice and etouffee on a plate. Crawfish Etouffee was delicious as well as the beignets I got. Got no complaints about the food. The only thing I was concerned about was no server in the restaurant was wearing a mask. read more

Driving through southwest Louisiana mid morning looking for a local cafe to have breakfast we found ourself in the heart of Acadian and landed here at T Coons Restaurant, I know what a name right well you first need to understand you're in "Cajun" country and growing up one hour east of here I fully understand and love the culture, the people, the food and the music. So the name doesn't surprise me and should never be offensive, this is my unofficial interpretation of the name "T" means "little" and "Coons" references to a Coonass, or Coon-ass used in reference to a working class person of Cajun ethnicity. Most of the people in the area consider the term a compliment or badge of honor and some proudly boast they are a "registered coon-ass", there are many opinions to the origin of the slang but believe me in all my life I've never heard it spoken in a negative way and if you ever have the pleasure of meeting the owner of this self proclaim Zydeco restaurant you'll immediately see that's the case here, oh mon Dieu, ce est un restaurant vraiment cajun. So as we entered I immediately felt the warm and friendly vibe of local friends laughing, joking and enjoying a meal together, along with the fragrances of the food being prepared in the kitchen. The owner and staff were interacting with their friends on this Saturday morning, because everyone visiting here are considered friends, just as we were even though this was out first visit, that's one of the beautiful things I love about the people of Louisiana and this culture. If I had just wanted a bacon and eggs breakfast I could of stopped anywhere but I knew the options here would include those typical offerings along with some that no one should miss if given the opportunity to experience. We chose the left side of the restaurant which serves up the good stuff, the right side has servers that allows you to order at the table, but this side requires you grab a tray and slide it along the steam table filled with the foods only found in this part of the world that are prepared using authentic seasonings and fresh ingredient from the region. Here are a few of the awesome dishes we chose for breakfast as strange as they may sound for breakfast fare they were all amazing and made for a memorable experience we'll never forget. Spicy Crawfish Étouffée - Jambalaya - Cajun Seasoned Fried Chicken and hot fresh out of the oven yeast rolls yes this was home cooking at its best, to wash it down we enjoyed a bottomless cup of "Mellow Joy" coffee a local coffee that started in 1936 and served locally though the 1970's and revived in early 2000 there's nothing like it, it was a real joy to see that it's back. Wow! What a cool experience! I went to Tcoons for breakfast with a colleague, while I was in Lafayette, Lousiana for work. I had what is called Coon's Meal, which is oatmeal with dried fruit and nuts. I asked for a large portion and it was only $3.75. I dont have one of those "little girly appetites", and I was only able to eat half of it. My decaf coffee came with both a pot and a cup. They certainly believe in large portions. With much wonder and amusement, i checked out the walls, which hosted a bunch of random items. Everything from old fashioned paraphanalia to animals. While I was waiting for my breakfast, I actually took the time to cruise around a little bit to check out the walls. My biggest laugh was a racoon's butt mounted on the wall with the words "Coon's Ass" below it (like it required an explanation). In speaking to my colleague, he explained that Coon's Ass is a compliment of sorts and if you call someone a Coon's Ass, it is in essence suggesting that they are "Deep Cajun". Who knew? I definately enjoyed my breakfast and the atmosphere there, so I would go there again if I find myself back in Louisiana again. read more

Great small town Southern atmosphere filled with a lot of guys (mostly guys) who know each other and talk loud and laugh loud and are enjoying themselves getting the day started. Very fun. Coffee (Mello-Joy) comes in a big thermos that they leave on your table which is nice--they are assuming one of the things you are starting your day with is an attempt to get your eyes open wide! Top-notch biscuits are a winner, and the eggs are fresh, the grits are tasty (if grits are your thing) and I had some excellent smoked sausage. My effort to support the local business took us here for breakfast. This restaurant has a really nice atmosphere of small-town cafe. The servers were very friendly and helpful. A lot of local customers do come here to hang out in the morning to get a slice of each other's life. Now about the food. I was expecting more Cajun-specific items and beignet was the only one on the list. So I proceeded by ordering a breakfast plate, spinach omelet, and beignet. We found the food to be so-so. Breakfast was packed, so I can only imagine lunch would be just as crowded. We seated ourselves. The locals were so friendly and we were surrounded by families. The food took a while, but that was no complaint compared to how amazing it tasted. From the biscuits to the crawfish omelet to the egg plates. DIVINE. I think I'm in love. Just had breakfast here for the first time and it was literally everything I look for in a breakfast joint. When a place filled with families and kids and local, ordinary folk, it's always a good sign. The staff was warm and friendly and had a cup of coffee in front of me practically before I even realized I wanted one. I got the T-Coon's Special breakfast plate which came with a massive hamburger patty smothered in browned onions and cheese (you could request grass-fed beef for a $2 surcharge: a nice socially conscious touch), 2 eggs any style, grits or hashbrowns or oatmeal, and toast or a biscuit. SO MUCH FOOD. Massive, delicious, flavorful portions served very quickly. Eggs were cooked just as I liked and seasoned with a delicious house-made spice blend ("The Stuff!"). So often grits are super bland and clumpy and kinda gross, but T-coon's grits were nicely salted and just buttery enough to make Paula Dean proud. Toast was nice thick pieces, but a little too soggy and greasy for my liking (thought I still ate both pieces). The gentleman at the table next to me got a humongous omelette, which is what I'll probs get next time (tomorrow?). And the family on the other side of me had the brilliant, and I mean BRILLIANT idea to just order beignets and bacon- which sounds like a majestic combination. Will be back! read more

Okay... I had reservations about this place, but I may have had the best shrimp sandwich of my life. You can pick your entree (unless you ordering a sandwich or something), but the hot food section has all typed of things from gumbo to red beans and more.
