I got a Reuben and home fries. The sandwich had little meat and the home fries were cold. This was after 11 PM but just so you know, they're not making it fresh, that's for sure. Julie has been seeing Mel's and has been wanting to try it out. We were down this way so we jumped on the opportunity. It's a fifties looking diner bright with neon signs and chrome, pretty easy to spot! Our server was super! Julie decided on a meat loaf dinner and I had the SOB dinner. It was very good but my chili was too bland. For desert Julie got strawberry ice cream and I had the blueberry cobbler with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. We stopped at a motel and noticed across the highway was a Mel's dinner. I have seen them a number of times in my travels here and never stopped. We decided to try it out. What a great dinner with an amazing menu. The coffee was first rate. I had the Hamburger Steak and it was great with the gravy and onions. The mashed potato's was great. Then we had apple pie with ice cream that was delicious. The service by Amanda was top shelf with the way she took care of us. We will gladly stop here again. read more

We wanted a quick breakfast after a long morning of yard work, and the overall experience was second to none. We arrived and was seated quickly, great ambiance with a family friendly feel. Our server was outstanding, and the coffee easily the best we've had. The pork chops were delicious, very well seasoned, and with the eggs, hash browns and toast was a great breakfast addition. Mel's has the best pick up food unless you get the new employee that forgets to give you the bag with all the gravies:( Nothing more disappointing than getting home and find you have to each the hamburger steak dry (no brown gravy) and the chicken fried steak dry (no white gravy ) plus you are missing those tasty buttery grits! Check your bags people, lol. Mel's is not that good without their sauces covering their food. Trust me. $60 wasted. read more

Great breakfast! Our first time there and would definitely recommend for breakfast. We were in town for a couple of hours and just got done with our appointment and it was still breakfast time. It was recommended to us so we decided to try. The ambience and setting was reminiscent of the old school diner look and feel. Stopped by for dinner after checking the reviews.  We enjoy diners and Mel's was no disappointment.  We were greeted by our server and seated immediately.  It was a real diner with very reasonable diner prices and oldies playing in the background.  My wife had a chocolate malted (excellent) with a hamburger and fries. I had the Country Scrambled (3 extra large eggs scrambled with diced ham and topped with cheese along with hash browns and a grilled biscuit. A very simple breakfast for dinner but done as I expected...a goodly portion and very well prepared plus visually appealing.  Our server was in training but very attentive, very polite, and friendly...and anxious to do well.  We enjoyed our meal, the price, and the service while enjoying those old tunes that bring back great memories. We are also planning on returning tomorrow night for their dinner special.  Just like old times. read more

Reminiscent of a 1950's style diner down to the neon lights, Mel's is such a fun place to eat! The walls are adorned in Marilyn Monroe, Elvis and James Dean photos and Norman Rockwell paintings. The food is your basic diner fare, nothing fancy but hits the spot especially if you're in the mood for Waffle House-esq grub with a much cooler vibe. I got the western omelet and hash browns and had to try one of the biscuits they claim to be the best in the world. The omelet and hash browns were decent but the biscuit truly was one of the best I've tasted. I had to stop myself from ordering another it was so good. It was very good all on it's own, too. I didn't need any butter or jelly, just savored the delicious light fluffy flavor all on it's own. Do yourself a favor and order at least one biscuit when you go! Service was not great on our visit. The waitress rushed us and forgot several items that our table ordered. I'm hoping that was just a one time thing and would go back to Mel's in spite of that, just hope to not get that same waitress-haha. Take a step back in time and visit Mel's! Wonderful nostalgic place to stop and grab a bite at any time of day or night. Large menu selection to choose from, something for everyone. Great, friendly staff. Food is hot, fresh and delicious and there's never a long wait. Hailey was our server and was super friendly and attentive and went out of her way to make our visit enjoyable. Mel's is a family favorite and whether it be 8am, 6pm, or 3am, when anyone in our family suggests Mel's, we are always up for a visit. We found Mel's Diner when we were in town for a softball tournament nearby. Our hotel provided a complimentary breakfast, but it wasn't to anyone's liking so we set out to find a hearty breakfast to feed our athlete before a day full of games. When we got there we were seated immediately. We let out nice waitress know we were in a time crunch and she made sure we got our food in plenty of time to eat and get out the door. If you want to call in an order for pick up, forget it!! I've tried on 3 separate occasions to call in an order, twice the phone rang forever and when someone finally picked up, they hung up. Once someone picked up and ask may I help you, I told her I wanted to place an order, she ask me to hold and after 20 minutes I hung up! We stopped for lunch while driving back home. We ordered a cup of chili, tuna sandwich, chicken salad sandwich, and grilled cheese. For dessert was a brownie sundae. The salads were delicious and fresh and the chili was good. The only recommendation I would make is you need to make homemade desserts. Our brownie was mediocre and tasted 3 days old at least and was dry, I wanted the pecan pie until I found out it was Sara Lee frozen. I guess I should have asked about the brownie. When you're leaving southern Louisiana on the way back to Texas, the Mel's sign on US 90 is like a homing signal to a hungry traveler. Jokes about Mel, Flo, Alice, and Vera from the 1970s aside, Mel's is a pretty legitimate dining option and it's even open 24 hours. It looks like a real diner on both the inside and outside. I tried the Mel's All American Burger, fries (sold separately), and iced tea. The All American burger is two huge hand-formed burger patties, incredibly melted cheese, and a nice plain toasted bun. It's also full of flavor, possibly with some sort of some Greek seasoning. The fries are pretty standard. I was impressed with the iced tea, in particular because the refills were a completely new glass even with lemon. Like any good diner and especially for anyplace in the South, the service was warm and friendly. Mel's is definitely a local gem and I can see why they have won recognition as the best burger in Acadiana. read more

I took a break from Cajun food and had the mushroom Swiss burger, which was very good. One of the things I really appreciate about Mel's is that they have food items that my 8 year-old son likes and the prices are very reasonable. I can get him two of something and not have to reconfigure the menu to accommodate his pickiness and growing appetite. Traveling through this area of Broussard LA the catchy lights of Mel's caught my eye! Quickly I Yelped.... Ok two good reviews, am I safe? I guess I will find out.... Friendly server helped us out... I ordered the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and an iceberg salad... I guess iceberg is big in Louisiana... Huge portion Next.... A dish called the Hamburger Steak with brown gravy and fries... Pretty much something I am glad to have met... Hamburger meat stuffed with green peppers and onions, slopped with brown gravy and a nice helping of shoestring fries... This place is a trip, it has a drive thru for the diner food and a small closet sized casino. If I'm ever in Broussard LA again (highly unlikely) I will make a stop at Mel's Diner!!!! read more

We visited at around Midnight on a Saturday night, so the place was jumping. Our waitress was attentive and polite. Our food took in excess of 45 minutes to come out of the kitchen. Food quality was good. So, as long as you are ok with spending a good bit of time drinking coffee and socializing with your tablemates, then no issues here at Mel's. read more
