I feel ashamed that I ate food in that discussing restaurant. Looking at the place outside looks inviting until I came in with my family. The staff did not look very friendly and just grab four menus and put us in a rickety booth with a large mirror on the wall. The menu was dirty and oily. The light above the table was covered in cobwebs and an inch of dust. No music playing, but a tank full of neon fish that a black light make them glow. Looking into the kitchen to watch them make the food should have been a red flag to leave. Leaking faucets, 3 works, pots and pans laying around and a push cart with an array of sauces left open to the elements. The Windows that you look into the kitchen was gross. The caulking around the Windows had black residue and the Windows themselves had a brown dusty look, like they need a degreaser. Now to the food. Most of the food we got had no taste, the meat was very chewy like rubber. The Orange chicken was just a lot of batter, sauce and crunchy chicken peices. The broccoli beef looked good but could not finish any beef just the broccoli, which was mostly stems. Yet the rest of the vegetables were good and adequate. The place would be great for older folks that are vegetarian. I will never be back and will report it to the health department. read more

I've tried a few Chinese spots in my year living in the Portland area, and this was by far my best experience so far. Very large portions left us with a few meals, but the flavor was on the bland side for what I really like. The decorations of the restaurant leave something to be desired, but the open window to look into the kitchen is pretty cool. It was very clean inside. The service was okay, but not great. This is our favorite place! We have only ever gotten take out and it's always piping hot when we get home (in Sandy) flavor is always good and consistent. The staff is friendly. My only complaint is when substituting fried rice for white, I think they charge us for both. Even though I ask for it to be substituted. There's a bit of a language barrier. So now I just take both containers of rice and carry on! We get the GF Bejing beef and orange chicken. My picky 5 year old even loves it! read more

I ordered the same thing I always get in a medium sized order for my family, and she pointed out what Szchwan Chicken was. I was surprised since I ordered Sesame Chicken. Since they do sound alike I said "well I didn't order that..." and pointed out what I did order. I got chastised for telling her wrong, and she asked what I wanted. I repeated SESAME Chicken, and that I wouldn't order Szchwan anything cause I've never had it, and loved their Sesame Chicken. Then she proceeded to yell at me, changed the order, (and I not only saw her write it down, but the total changed as well). Sadly I didn't think to check it before leaving, and since we don't live close it was a bit before I got to eat, and you guessed it... I got what she described as Szchwan Chicken. UG! I called back ONLY wanting a credit for JUST that item & was told I had to come back to exchange it. At this point everyone else was eating & offered me some of theirs and I wasn't about to drive back for that. Additionally, she read back there order correctly, so I know she changed it when she was through yelling at me for ordering the wrong thing. I said again I simply wanted a credit for the Sesame Chicken I never got, but was told no. Then another woman came on the phone saying "can I help you"? And I went through the story AGAIN... After saying the woman I previously spoke to said they can't do a refund (NOT TRUE) the second woman I had been talking to said she was JUST A CUSTOMER!!! She said "I asked if I could help and the employee just handed me the phone"!!! WHAT THE HELL???? I honestly can't remember the last time I was so disgusted with "service". Either wait till they're open again, or pull you're entire order or at the counter and VERIFY!!! Off your going to get yelled at but there ride staff that claims note to understand English, it may as well be for confirming your order!!! Worst restaurant ever! I bit into a very small pebble in a spring roll. I made a call to the restaurant and got a very rude woman named Sue on the phone. She tried to tell me it was some sort of Chinese noodle. I explained it was clearly a rock. She asked me what I expected her to do about it. I told her I expected my money back. I put the rock/pebble in a Ziploc bag and went back to the restaurant. I was treated with extreme hostility and horrific customer service. The host accused me of lying, saying I could have gotten the rock anywhere. He did give me my money back and very rudely and loudly thanked me for never coming back. Food: Nearly perfect, I had the orange chicken which was NOT neon orange and had actual pieces of fried orange peel in with the meat. No fat or gristle found on the meat, very good. I also had the shrimp and chicken hunan plate, the shrimp was properly cleaned (first Chinese food place I've ever seen properly clean shrimp!), snap peas where properly steamed, still crisp. Only issue was with the pot stickers, their dough was too thick and so while good on the outside was mushy and under cooked on the inside, make the dough a bit thinner and these would be wonderful. Service: Average +1, nothing amazing, nothing bad. The server did dish up our leftovers for us so they get a +1 as this is becoming less common. Otherwise it was pleasant. Decor: Fairly standard, it was clean and brightly lit which I like. They also have a good sized fish tank in the middle of the place which I children liked. Overall: Great, this is my new default Chinese food place on the (far) east side of town. read more

WOW!! Have you ever had a take out dinner that you sigh after eating it - saying OMG I ate too much! Wife ordered takeout - first comment when she walked in the door, "That was the cleanest restaurant I've seen in a long time!" So, dinner consisted of the General Tso's Chicken - to die for! Not as spicy as you may expect - so if you want it spicier ask for it - but was perfect as is for me. We also had Pan Fried Noodles - Vegetable - great! Wife loved her Happy Family as well! The ABSOLUTE BEST General Tso Chicken on the east side (maybe all of Portland!) Having said that, I see several reviews saying it's not. After eating this dish in MANY places here's what I think.......... People get used to a certain taste. Most General Tso is far too sweet for my taste. Open Kitchen's General Tso is not overly sweet. If you like this dish more sweet, order the Orange Chicken. However, if you prefer it slightly spicy and more tangy, you will love this General Tso! This little restaurant sits right in the 'elbow' of an 'L' shaped strip mall across from Fred Meyers, and would be easy to miss if you were not looking for it or doing business with one of it's neighbors. In addition to the General Tso, the 'Hot & Sour soup" is great. (we almost always order these two together) The restaurant is clean, well laid out, and not 'overly' decorated as most Chinese type restaurants are. The staff, while obviously Asian, understand and speak the English language just fine. (a problem I've seen at some places) There is a large fish tank that adds to the atmosphere, as does the long window between the dining area and the cooking area. The wok grill is right up against that window, and watching the traditional cooks work their magic is great entertainment. HIGHLY recommended! read more

Ordered broccoli and beef and potstickers pretty simple order broccoli beef tasted like cow manure also smelled like it as well. potstickers were some weird thick dumpling with this weird meat inside of it that I could not identify. I don't understand how this place has a 4 star average!!! Ate here today and the food was down right BAD. Everything was over done - over breaded, over salted (probably copious amounts of MSG) and over greasy. Started with the crazy salty egg flower soup, tasty at first but mid way through I needed a refill on my water just to counter act the saltiness. Spring rolls were next which looked nicely browned & crispy but the grease dripping down my fingers and chin as I bit into one was waaay too much. Next, very strange potstickers with a breading so thick it was more like eating a thick, greasy finger sandwich. I had the Kung Pao chicken & my lunch companion had the Orange chicken. Both dishes were deep fried with thickly battered pieces of all dark meat. Save for the different sauces which were majorly lacking in flavor, the two dishes were basically the same, tasting like American fried chicken bits covered in weak sauce. This is all to say nothing of the, shall we say "after effects" about 45 minutes later if you get my drift. I'm sorry fellow Yelpers who love this place, but I must vehemently disagree with the 4 star average and hope I can save someone else from a bad experience by suggesting you run, not walk in the opposite direction of this place! read more

Best Chinese Restaurant in Oregon!! I have always had great food and service here. An added benefit of the window into the kitchen is that I swear the cooks watch you to see if you are almost done with your appetizers and time the main course to come out right when you are ready for it. While the comment made by Elaine Y.D. may make a little sense if Szechuan Open Kitchen was located on 82nd or other areas with a high density of Chinese people living there, it is not true for the very outskirts of Gresham. I have taken many Asian friends and even a couple of Chinese friends there and they have all loved it. Most even stop there every time they are coming back from Mt. Hood. So I guess she doesn't speak for all "Chinese" just as I don't speak for all "non-Asians" ;) read more

If I could give this zero stars, I would. One of the worst service experiences I've ever had. The staff is very rude. They do not say thank you ever. When I went to pay my bill I handed him my ticket and he looked at me and said "well?" I replied "we'll what?" He said "you want to pay?" I said "yes" he replied, "we'll where is your money!?" I proceeded to pay, he handed me change and I said thank you. He didn't reply. For the first time in my life I left no tip. I ate with a group of coworkers for lunch and ordered the Szechuan special.
