I loved the service! The lady at the counter was very nice and she was nice on the phone as well. She laughed and smiled a lot and gave me top tier customer service even though I was just picking it up. They do not have the option to dine in at the moment but picking up was pretty quick! Everything was ready as soon as I got there and I was able to hop out of my car and grab my food and get back in. (There's no parking) they have a lunch special from 11-2:00pm which was very affordable as well. It was clean inside and they get you in and out. Tried for the first time for carry-out. Online ordering was a breeze and the food was ready at the expected time. Everything we had was good: steamed pork dumplings, lo mein, and sesame chicken. As a Southwest resident, I've regretted the loss of our one Chinese takeout (Jenny's) and have driven all the way to Downtown fave Sichuan Pavillion. So discovering this gem upstairs from my Indian go-to (Jab We Met) was great. A climb up a steep, narrow staircase reveals a no-frills takeout reception next door to the kitchen. My first test of a Chinese takeout is usually wonton or hot and sour soup, steamed dumplings, and fried rice. I went with hot and sour, and combination fried rice for about $19 less tax/tip. I was pleased that the rice wasn't priced higher than shrimp fried rice: a common practice where you pay a premium for variety? The tasty food, presented promptly with a smile, greatly exceeded my expectations and made the drive to K Street an embarrassing extravagance. I'll be back to explore the menu, especially BROWN RICE(!) and flat noodle dishes: maybe even Pad Thai. For courteous, indulgent service, and good, well-priced take out, this is my local go-to. This place is AWFUL! We ordered three dishes from them because my friend got confused and thought they were the good place across the street. I ordered the shrimp with snow peas (which included water chestnuts in a white sauce) and they called and said they were out of snow peas and would I mind if they substituted green beans. I was disappointed but really wanted water chestnuts, so I said okay. The dish arrived -- a mess of green beans in brown sauce with hardly any shrimp. I tried it and it was pretty tasteless. When I called about it, the woman said she would put a refund on our NEXT order to make up for it. So they don't give me what I ordered but I still have to pay for it and spend more money there to be recompensed? The other dishes were terrible. The fried rice was dry, overcooked, and over salted, and the sesame beef tasted weird, almost like sweet and sour in a bad way. I can't believe I spent so much money there for food that deserves to be in the garbage. I'm going to go make myself a sandwich instead. read more

I have been living on Capitol Hill for 12 years now but I've never try this place. Today I had a chance to go here to order SINGAPORE NOODLE to go for lunch. Actually it was very good. It's full of curry flavor and spicy enough for me and also plenty of proteins such as pork, shrimp, chicken, and beef and very generous with bell peppers. The rice noodle was cooked perfectly. I asked for chili oil on the side and they have me gave me a plenty. I waited less than 10 minutes for my order, that's very quick and it was still very hot when I got home. Let me preface this review by saying my only experience has been with delivery/takeout. And it has always been wonderful. First of all, they use their own drivers who graciously follow delivery instructions rather than leaving your food outside, in a lobby, or some other inconvenient place. They also know the neighborhoods well and arent lost or making accidental circles via Google maps. They're efficient. The food is also great, we always order the crispy beef and fried rice, while trialing other entree items. The portion sizes are good and the food is packed well. Wasn't sure we wanted to stay, but glad we did. All dishes were really tasty and plentiful. Chinese spicy is not really spicy so don't be fooled by the suggestion that the food is spicy- it is not. Fantastic hole in the wall Chinese restaurant. I mean, it is hard to find on 8th street. Look for a inconspicuous door next to Teds Bulletin and walk up to those stairs to pick up your food. With that being said, the food here is very flavorful. We ordered an eggplant in hot garlic sauce and a General Tso tofu. We were surprised by the spice level without even having to ask to increase it. I love that the go to spice is at a level where you feel it but it doesn't make you chug water/beer. The portions were excellent, these 2 dishes made for 4 meals (2 dinners, 2 lunches) and the leftover were even better the next day. The sauce really had a chance to soak up into the vegetables an tofu and the flavor became even more concentrated. It was delightful Order came out correct and in a timely manner. This is a pure takeout place upstairs from the main street. For a place that holds itself out as being a "Szechuan House", I think it's fair to expect the szechuan tofu to be good. But it wasn't special, not appreciably spicy at all (boo!), and a tad more costly that I'd expect for takeout. The traces of broccoli florets and some but of unidentified crunchy black debris did not inspire much confidence in the preparation either. Also, they managed to leave me without utensils, which is really the opposite of serendipity, because I've got way too many plastic forks and knives from takeout that I just took home, but this time I actually needed them. What's the point of stapling your takeout bag shut if you have to open it and check things like this before you leave? There aren't really a ton of Chinese options in this part of DC, but I wouldn't really recommend this one. No one's expecting the moon from cheap takeout, but I've had better. read more

Kathy, with a radiant smile on her face, refused any gratuity (and my gratitude was indeed abundant) despite my persistence. If you want burnt wings this is place to hit. But I'd walk an extra mile to the next Chinese place that's 2 dollars cheaper per dish and 5 times tastier. Was very disappointed when most of our wings had burnt spots that we had to peel off. And the beef with garlic sauce barely had any beef, they were these shredded tiny little pieces of meat. Stayed in DC last week with my brother and a friend. After the five and a half hour drive down, when we got to our hotel room we were extremely hungry. I spent some time looking up places nearby on Yelp, and after some searching we decided we wanted to order Chinese takeout, and unfortunately all the Chinese takeout places in the area seemed to have three and a half stars so we just settled for this one. When we called to order, the first thing we found odd was that the guy taking the order did not know the address of or seemed to have ever heard of the hotel we were staying at (our hotel was only around a mile away). We opted to go pick up the food rather than wait the half hour to 45 minutes it would have taken to get to us. We used Google Maps to get there and then spent 10 minutes looking around for the place because the address we were brought to, was just not it. Eventually I found it. It's this very nondescript place; there is a door with a little vertical sign next to it that says the name. You go up a flight of stairs, turn to your right and it turns out the place is located on the second floor of this building. And it's hard to find because the entrance to the place is tucked in between two bigger businesses. Anyway, we get our food and head back to our room to eat. An order of sesame chicken, chicken and broccoli (each comes with a pint of white rice) and wonton soup came out to just under $30 (about average for a Chinese takeout place). We immediately find that the chicken dishes are not packed full, they're swimming in sauce, and there's little meat (about 15 pieces in the chicken and broccoli, we counted). The chicken and broccoli as far as taste goes was pretty average, and the sesame chicken was alright. The wonton soup was awful. It literally tasted like they'd just boiled water and thrown some salt it. And if that wasn't bad enough, the wontons looked nice and big, but we opened them up and discovered the meat inside was literally the size of a small pebble. Overall highly disappointed with this place, we could have spent last money and gotten better food elsewhere. I realized later that my mistake was in just looking at the star rating this place had and not reading actual reviews. Tl;dr: Mediocre food, not-so-easy to find location, skimpy on portion sizes and tasteless wonton soup. LIFE LESSON: Don't just look at star ratings, read, read, read reviews! read more

Ordered take out because what else do you do when your significant other is away and there is a CSI marathon on TV? Right. Generally I opt for sushi but tonight I was craving sweet and sour chicken. Surprisingly I've lived on the hill for three years and made it this far without a go to Chinese delivery location. After searching around on Yelp and Grub Hub I decided to take a chance on Szechuan House. None of the Chinese restaurants in the area boast more than 3 stars and the reviews were 50-50. You can order online and that pretty much sold me because I hate placing orders over the phone. I was quoted 55-65 minutes for delivery so I settled in to wait it out with another CSI episode. To my surprise my door bell rang after only 30 minutes. Super quick delivery and it was very much appreciated. They have a $15 minimum delivery order but only charge $1 for the actual delivery. I had to stack on a few things to get to $15 because their prices are so reasonable but I'm more than okay with having Chinese leftovers in the fridge. I ordered the sweet and sour chicken, fried rice and tacked on an egg roll and spring roll to make the $15 minimum. The sweet and sour chicken was perfect. Warm, crispy and just the perfect amount of sweet and sour. I ordered the small order but it was more than enough food for me. Fried rice was also on point. The only complaints I have about the food are the spring roll and egg roll. The spring roll was crispy on the outside but cold inside. It also had shrimp in it, which I thought was a bit odd. Same thing with the egg roll, it was a little warmer on the inside but it also had shrimp in it. I gave the egg roll to my dog. She seemed to enjoy it. Overall the food was good and the delivery time was quick. I would definitely order again, but maybe next time I'll try dumplings instead. read more
