Did I go to an enchilada restaurant and order tacos? I sure did! After being seated, the chips came out with red salsa and queso. The chips were thin and crispy while the salsa had a little bit of kick. Queso was creamy and very well seasoned. For my entree, I chose the grilled fish tacos which came with rice and beans. The rice and beans were fairly standard and tasted good. The fish tacos were huge! Grilled perfectly and seasoned well, the fish paired well with the corn tortilla. The corn tortilla held up well against the fish which is a plus! My gripe with corn tortillas, other than the fact flour tortillas taste wag better, is that the corn tortillas rarely stay intact. Tonight my family and I had dinner at Sylvia's for the first time as we are staying at a hotel nearby and just wanted something easy to walk to. We were very happy with everything from the food, to the service, to the atmosphere. I had the Alice Enchiladas with the Mexican caesar salad and both were super delicious! I also had a mezcal Paloma that was great too. The kids had a cheese quesadilla with fries and beans and rice. All were super yummy! We finished the meal a chocolate tres leches cake which was huge and did not disappoint. Our waiter Kevin was very kind and helpful. Been here many times for lunch with work friends and have had positive experiences in the past. This review is specifically for my experience during lunch on 2/10. I was there with a group of 6. I ordered the Chicken Enchiladas. My first bite of the enchiladas contained some chicken cartilage, I thought no big deal it happens. My 2nd bite was fine. On my 3rd bite, there was a full on chicken bone. At this point, I called the older gentleman who was working over (he looked like more of a manager or lead waiter) and explained the situation. He said when they make the chicken sometimes this happens and essentially just shrugged his shoulders. I was dumbfounded, I was expecting maybe him to offer to remake it, maybe ask if I wanted beef instead, but nothing, nada. The people I was with were just as confused as me. We were joking that I needed to order the boneless enchiladas next time, not the bone-in. To start, the salsa tasted like plain canned tomato sauce, lacking any real flavor or spice. I ordered the fajitas medium well, but they arrived medium rare. I initially thought the odd taste was due to them being undercooked for my preference, but even after they were recooked, they still tasted slightly off...almost rancid, as if they hadn't been stored properly or were about to go bad. This place is well positioned within walking distance to multiple hotels, which is one of the key reasons for my visit. I've eaten here multiple times, and I have no complaints. The menu is a bit different from other Tex-Mex offerings in the area and I always like it when a place can mix up the norm. Chips tasted as if they came from a bag. As always, I ordered a Chile Relleno. The plate was HUGE, coming with a cheese and ground meat stuffed poblano is a watery egg wash. Ho-hum. When I sit down to complimentary chips and salsa I'm already in a good mood! I was told to try the enchiladas, and they have about two dozen choices. However, I saw the lunch menu and figured why not save a few bucks? I was pretty surprised by the variety of options on the lunch menu. Well not every enchilada choice is on it, there are plenty of options. I decided to go with the Donna enchiladas which were ground beef with a sauce (see picture). When the plate arrived I was a bit concerned that they were small, but by the time I was done with my meal I was satisfied. It's cute how it's presented, with the metal plates keeping the food warm the entire meal. I also enjoyed the charro beans, which do have some meat in them. Great food by one of Texas's foremost Tex-Mex chefs! Sylvia's Enchilada Kitchen offers cooking classes that include hands-on learning, a margarita, and a full dinner (with a sopapillla for dessert). They also offer cooking classes. I spent this rainy Saturday learning to make tamales in the 3-hour class, ate a great meal (included in the price of the class), and got to bring half a dozen pork and chicken ones home. Sylvia, the "Enchilada Queen", hopes to debut her chili gravy, green enchilada sauce, and salsa at Texas grocery stores in the coming year, and I can't wait!
