We spent an unseasonably warm Friday evening on the patio, but despite the lack of shade we had a wonderful experience. While I would recommend that anyone with an aversion to direct sunlight stay inside (duh!), The Sycamore is a fantastic choice for perfectly prepared upscale bar food. Don't be fooled by that title though, this is far from the normal pub fare. At dinner, we started with some BLT Deviled Eggs and a Charcuterie and Cheese plate. The charcuterie selection was excellent, and well worth the $17 for four people to share. Their interesting take on deviled eggs was highlighted by nicely crisped bacon and a horseradishy tomato confit, all wrapped in a leaf of bibb lettuce. I'm normally a soup lover, but not outside on a hot night. While my companions enjoyed both the farm greens and caprese salads, I moved straight to the Nashville Hot Chicken. I'd heard good things, so despite a delicious sounding menu of steaks and chops, I went the sandwich route and I'm glad I did. The choice of chicken thighs over breast made for a unique sandwich, heartier and more flavorful than I'm used to. It held up very nicely to the spice, which was hot but not overpowering. If you're not a spicy food lover you may want to steer clear, but then you probably guessed that. The house made pickles had a nice kick as well. The surprising star were the perfectly done french fries and malt vinegar aoili, for which I would definitely return. Consider grabbing a side of fries even if you normally wouldn't. Although I wasn't drinking, the beer and cocktail lists both looked very well done. We skipped dessert, as well, in favor of heading off to our next activity but the chocolate pie at the table next to us looked great. The Sycamore is the place you go, when you want everything to be just right. Not only is the the food outstanding, but the staff is SO friendly. We started out with the carrots which we found out were grown right here in town, and it shows. We also had the pork belly and the lobster Mac and cheese and they were both delicious. On Monday, I walked in with my cousin, who suggested that we eat there. As soon as we walked, I noticed how small it was and that we were the only people of color there. (I still can't believe that's still a thing in 2019) So my cousin gestured that we could sit at "the community table" because the restaurant seemed full. Right as he said that, the two parties (3 each- 6 people total) at the table made eye contact with us and purposely spread out so that we couldn't sit at the "community table" even if we wanted to. And of course they smiled while doing so. It was very "seats taken" from Forrest Gump. However, because I am taller than my cousin and the hostess i could see that there was a table that was open. So as the hostess walked back to us, she asked "how many?!" I said "two please". She then said in a very condescending tone, "oh no, I don't think I have a table for you." Then pretended to look something up on her tablet. Remember, I am taller than her so I could see she wasn't doing anything. And then with her smug smile, she saw I was looking at the open table and then glanced at it and smiled. Then she suggested the "community table". The people at the table tried to act like they couldn't here us discuss sitting there but kept talking and listening to us. Then I turned to the hostess and asked if she was sure that there weren't any tables. Remember, I can see the open table. She said "NOoooo. But would you like to sit at the bar, I could ask to see if anyone is about to leave." Then the people at the bar looked at us like "I wish you would". I turned to the hostess and said "right as you suggested to 'community table' everyone purposely spread out and didn't make us feel welcome." Her fake response was "oh, I'm so sorry." - very valley girl Then she asked if we would like to wait, but warned us it may be a while. I said, "no thank you. I think we will go somewhere else." And I walked out before she could respond. We got outside I wanted to know if I over reacted and my cousin quickly said "no, they were rude as hell." I know they couldn't really do anything about other patrons being rude to us, but I could see the open table and I was not going to beg for it. I don't post often, but I will post about this . Excellent spot. I took my uncle here for his birthday. He enjoyed everything. I ordered the Coconut Curry Prawns and he got the salmon. He said the salmon was cooked to perfection. Our drinks were great as well. The banana tartlet was delicious. I'd return just to order that as a late night craving. There's nice outdoor seating. Since this spot is located in German Village it is somewhat tiny. I definitely recommend making reservations if you plan to go. read more

It was a delightful evening. We sat outside in the perfect weather. The couple next to us at the shared table was insufferable almost as if it were a sitcom. Their miserable psychobabble banter and her neverending complaining made the experience less than ideal. The grapefruit radler was delicious. The veg burger was tasty but, like so many veggie burgers, completely squishy and crumbly. My husband devoured his ribeye with asparagus and french fries. The starters pack a flavour punch, particularly the smoked pancetta wrapped dates with white Stilton cheese. Scallops and ahi tuna seafood options are well made, but the short rib is definitely the highlight. Very tender with a purée and roasted brussels sprouts topped with a jalapeño kick. Locally sourced. If there's one thing the Sycamore has, it's charm. It's tucked into a quiet part of German Village, a bit away from the commercial corridor on 3rd, and the charm onslaught starts when you park your car and walk down the street to the restaurant itself. It's a lovely location in one of Columbus' most picturesque neighborhoods. The interior of the Sycamore doesn't disappoint, either; a nice mix of modern (booths, communal tables) and traditional (particularly the original tin ceiling). Keep in mind that that tin ceiling makes the whole place incredibly loud when they're busy, and in the winter every time the door is opened it sends a draft halfway down the restaurant. So why only 3 stars? The food, really. It's not that the kitchen doesn't have obvious skill - I ordered the coffee-braised beef short rib, and there were at least four separate techniques showcased on the plate. There were shaved brussel sprouts (technique 1) on a bed of pureed cauliflower (technique 2), and the braised short rib itself (technique 3) topped by green apple slaw (technique 4). But the whole thing was bafflingly, mind-bogglingly, bland. If there's one thing about braising meat, it's that it gives it a deep, complex flavor that penetrates the meat. And yet the coffee-braised short rib was mild, at best. My wife's seared scallop dish was no better. The scallops were large and nicely seared, but also pretty bland. The risotto cakes demonstrated interesting technique, but not much flavor. The braised collard greens were fine, but seemed like too hearty a vegetable for the delicate scallops. They would have worked better with my short rib dish. I want to love the Sycamore; everything else about it is great, and it has the potential of being a real highlight in the Columbus food scene. But really, I would suggest getting dinner elsewhere, and coming here for dessert and a nightcap instead. read more

I've been here a few times before with no problems, but this Saturday my dish was very disappointing. I got a special of the day- scallops and lobster with risotto. It came out with cold lobster that did not taste or feel fresh, and hard risotto. I had to send it back because of the raw rice. We were given a free dessert, but because of the wait, not because of a bad dish. For a special that was priced higher than most entrees, I expected something more thoughtful. read more

My favorite place in all of Columbus. Great food, an even better staff and a solid beer selection. There are maybe a dozen seats at the bar and maybe a dozen tables so the place fills up fast. I'd recommend a reservation on the weekends. There is a nice outdoor patio too if the weather is good. The place looks like an old style German Village renovated house on the outside which adds a lot of character. The inside has a good amount of exposed brick and a nice trendy look to it. One or maybe two TVs if you want to watch a game but it's not a sports bar. They only have 4-6 beers on draft but they make up for that with a good can and bottle selection. The drafts are all craft and usually delicious anyway. The cocktail menu is playful with some classics too. Worth the look. The food is absolutely amazing. Everything I've had has been wonderful. The menu changes pretty frequently so don't get too attached to some of the items on it. Most of the food is locally sourced including the chicken wings that are fine dining worthy. If the have salmon or tuna in the menu get it, no matter the preparation, it's not to be missed. My only critique is the bar seems a little cramped for the workers but I'm never on that side of the bar so who cares! It doesn't prevent the bartenders from providing great service at all. Oh, and the music they play is always turning me on to some band I haven't heard of. That's not easy to do and really appreciated. This is a must go to restaurant! read more

My son is at Nationwide Children's Hospital (he has a chronic illness and has been inpatient for 18 months) and tonight myself and few other moms from the hospital decided to meet here to have a nice dinner and relaxing night out. We originally thought there would only be 4 of us, but a 5th mom was able to make it last minute after their baby fell asleep early. We pulled up a 5th chair and were told that the chair could not be placed in the aisle of the patio, which we completely understood and moved the chair so there were 3 on one side. The waiter thanked us for moving the chair and said it was fine. Then, while enjoying our food, the waiter came up to us and told us that we needed to leave because they could only seat 4 to a table. That if he knew we had 5, they would have told us we couldn't eat here. We of course got upset since we were mid eating and he told us they only allot so much time for guests to eat. Mind you, we had been there less than 2 hours and were actively ordering/eating. There was another party that wanted the table behind us that we took the chair from, but there was another table that was completely free for them to sit at. They did not offer for us to use 2 tables and told us we could stay if one person left or stood. Our waiter said the manager would be by to talk with us, but he just came and yelled at us that we couldn't be here since we have 5 people. We bought food and drinks and had planned to buy more but were effectively kicked out. We were so excited to eat there and have a night out, which we rarely get, but it was totally ruined. I hope no other guests receive this type of treatment. Shame on you. read more

I came to the Sycamore on Thursday night with my girlfriend to meet one of my very good friends. The reason I picked the restaurant it was in the middle from Worthington and Grove City. We arrived a few minutes late due to finding street parking. Waitress was nice when she was around. I ordered the tuna sandwich which comes with pickled veggies, charred jalapenos, and a sriracha aioli, the sandwich also came with fries. The sandwich was good, but not worth the $17.00 I liked the pickle that was served on the side as well as the fries. The aioli was a malt vinegar aioli and was good. My girlfriend ordered the burger, she liked it, but mentioned that the bun to burger ratio was off which I agree on. My friend ordered the beef cheek poutine and said it was different, but good. Service was ok. Overall 3.5 stars. read more

I don't often leave reviews but I was quite taken with this place. I was invited by a friend that wanted to try it and it was a lovely experience. We started with the cheese board and the artichoke. The food was beautifully presented and tasted great. I should also say that they had a really nice cocktail menu and I'd recommend the prospectus (well... they also had a very nice wine selection with some german whites that you don't normally see in Columbus). For dinner, I had the verde salad with the birria -- this was my first birria but I had been waiting to try it as it has been all over the NYTs cooking app and Bon Appetite -- it was very very good -- I highly recommend it. Packed with flavor! I probably should have tried dessert but I was honestly stuffed so I had another cocktail instead and we headed out. Highly recommend this spot! read more

In town for work and decided to give this place a shot. Was hoping to get some work done while there but the bar seat (only seat available) wasn't the right place for that kind of thing. Hostess wasn't all that warm and neither was the bartender at first but as I got settled in she smiled a bit more and was helpful and great with service speed. Food was awesome, I guess it was one of the owners bused the food out to me which I got the burger with a side poutine. Being from Canada and growing up with poutine I was skeptical since I haven't had a good poutine in the states yet but this place did it great. Definitely not traditional but a great gastro version take on a classic. Loved the food and the atmosphere. Wish I could have stayed later and talked with some of the people showing up late to get crunked on a Monday!? Da fauq!? Some know if I'll ever be back in Columbus but if I do I would do sycamore again. They should think about getting a little dj in there on the weekends. read more

We stopped by the Sycamore for a late dinner on a Saturday night and were able to be immediately seated, however I'd recommend making reservations for prime times on a weekend. I ordered the burger and loved it as well as the generous portion of fries that came with it. My brother ordered the scallops and quickly wished he had ordered the burger. My husband ordered the seared tuna sandwich. He enjoyed the meal but ended up picking at my fries as he didn't feel full after clearing his plate. Just went for what I thought would be a nice evening but was VERY disappointed this time, for we usually love coming here. The portions got smaller and the taste of the food was mediocre and salty. I had got the crab cakes and my husband got the pork tenderloin. The crab cakes were not good as they seemed doughy and could have been served with a side of fingerling potatoes rather than fries for a more classy dish for it being $39!!! The pork tenderloin came with salty mashed potatoes and a little spoonful of Swiss chard you could eat in one bite. When we got the artichokes as an appetizer we were expecting more of the "hearts" but was just one big artichoke cut in half just to eat one bite out of the middle for $11! This is the first time I have been disappointed, and will say I don't care to come back. I could honestly make better food at home and save a lot more money! read more

Servings are large and the beef cheeks and the fish are very good. Their is not much space for a group larger than 4 and only can just squeeze 5. I hate to say it because I loved the old Sycamore but this place has only one thing in common with it... the name. Apparently the new sycamore is under new ownership, which is fine. I still wanted to give it a chance. The food simply isn't good. I had the sycamore burger, which I sent back because it came to me cold. They remade the burger and the result was a nice looking burger that was just as cold as the one I sent back. My fiance chose the short rib. We have ordered short rib and many restaurants. Upon first look, we understood that the chef does not know how to prepare short rib. It was in small square like pieces with unrendered fat all over it. And it was tough to cut through. Short rib should be so tender that you don't even need a knife. We sent this back as well. We were apologized to and advised that the chef was still trying to figure out how to prepare the short rib for the fall menu. Here's an idea! If you don't know how to make something, just don't put it on the menu. There were some redeeming qualities. They were apologetic and attempted to remedy the issue appropriately, the charcuterie board was good and so was the free cookie and icecream we received for our troubles. However, I won't be returning because quite simply... the chef cannot cook. read more

I have been going to The Sycamore for a few years now but this is my first review. I love this place! The neighborly feeling when you walk through the door, the gorgeous wooden bar and the intimate space makes this a happy place for me to belly up to the bar and enjoy drinks and appetizers. The Ahi tuna poke and pancetta wrapped dates are two of my favorite small bites. Both have their own distinctive flavors and the presentation excellent. The guacamole is lovely, nice and chunky served with warm corn chips. Add a glass of bubbles super! This particular evening we opted for a table with some friends. Our waiter went through all the specials. I opted for the Chef's daily sea scallops, which sounded amazing. Four large scallops cooked in a brown butter sauce with a butternut squash risotto. The scallops were cooked to perfection, crispy brown on the outside but still moist in the middle. Now for the bad part, unfortunately the risotto was not cooked. The rice was still crispy and for what was supposed to be butternut squash risotto had only a few pieces. It lacked any flavor and was very disappointing, especially for a dish that cost in the $30 range. I told our waiter to let the chef know. My dinner partner ordered the same dish and the risotto was also left. Parking can be a challenge in German Village but the Axis Glass lot just down the street is available (free of charge) and never crowded. I made a reservation on Yelp :) . Nice decor, decent menu, pretty good food, fair prices. The bar witches were off the chart , unfricking friendly. I've never owned a bar but these ladies would never work for my establishment.
