This is the first Thai place I ever tried (back in 2016) and I am happy to say that it is still amazing to this day. No other Thai place has ever lived up to these crab cheese ragoons. Noodle Roni is a better version of curry noodle and you can't find that dish anywhere else. Personally, I love to eat the Von Sen on top of their shrimp chips. This is the best Thai food you'll ever have and I am so happy this place has remained as excellent as it was 10 years ago! read more

I guess it's bound to happen to almost every carry out place but the quality has been on a decline. Ordered Thai Peanut with chicken. What I got was 70% cabbage and almost no chicken or other vegetables. Just tossed it as I didn't order cabbage soup. This used to be a regular but not worth it. Spectacularly bad is an understatement. read more

You would think a Thai restaurant would know how to make pad Thai. First plate was swimming in liquid. The waitress said it isn't supposed to be like that. It's supposed to be dry. Brings a freshly made plate out to me. Well I wasn't going to complain again but it was under cooked and tasteless. read more

Not the best not the worst. Very good portion size and decent flavor but just not the classic Thai I'm used to. They will definitely hold back on spice so if you like heat don't be afraid to get the hottest spice level. read more

The Pad Thai and the Curry Pad Thai were bone dry. Zero gravy, just dry noodles with some flavor. Highly disappointed.

The curry noodles were so dry and the chicken was bland hospital food. Not good at all. Bangkok down the street blows this place out of the water and better prices. read more

It was hugely disappointing when my family had a gathering for Thai dinner during cruise week; it wasn't our choice at the moment. The orders were all mixed up and it turned out really bad! I didn't expect to have a bad meal; it wasn't what I ordered. Thankfully, I don't live in Michigan; I went out of the country with my husband! This restaurant turned out really bad! read more

This has been a go to for us in Birmingham for decades. However, the last few times the food hasn't been very good. Noodles are mushy, meat sparse and bland. Even their crispy rolls are no longer as good as they once were. Ambiance of restaurant is casual. We used to dine in occasionally but we've gotten take out recently and the food isn't worth going there anymore. read more

Sy Thai is one of my favorite comfort meals weekly! I love this place, and I will forever be a customer. I love love love the Spring Rolls, Chicken Lettuce Wraps, Drunken Noodles w/ Shrimp, Tofu Fried Rice, and Veggie Pad Pak. The food is truly so good and very well priced. I love it here!! read more

Just ok Thai food. We have eaten here for years and it is just ok. Not bad not amazing. Just ok. That's ok. Some restaurants are like that. Maybe I'm just not a Thai kind of guy and that's ok. lol enjoy read more

1 star for the server. Very kind. If you love extra sweet food, this place is for you. Pad see ew. Was awfully sweet! Had three bites and asked if it's supposed to be this sweet and they said yes. Didn't touch the rest and still had to pay for it Tom kua soup. Wasnt even cooked. Microwaved and threw on the toppings, mushroom uncooked shrimp green onion. Beef panang curry. AGAIN TOOO SWEET . NO I will not be coming back. read more

I've been coming here for many years, and it used to be a staple for quality Thai food. We've branched out to other places for the last couple years but tried it again last night. Wow, we were so disappointed. Prices are much higher than before - to be expected, not a huge deal. But we paid $1 extra for beef and there were literally 5 small pieces of beef in the entire order of fried rice. My beloved curry noodles lacked sauce and were bland and mushy. So disappointing! I don't think we'll go again - there are too many other places doing it better these days. read more

My bf comes here often and raves about the duck. I tried the udon noodles with shrimp. It was really good! There was some of the shrimp shell that I would have to remove while eating. It was also pretty salty and the sauce didn't taste like teriyaki. It was still really good though. I feel like they probably use msg here, which if they do they should stop. We both felt extremely tired after the meals and I got a headache. The noodles were really good, but definitely not healthy to have this often! read more

One of my go to take out Thai restaurants and I won't be in the area for awhile so of course we had to have one last Pad Thai experience from here! There Chicken Pad Thai is our favorite! You can order online or call in which makes it easy for all! Super fast and I would say only downside is parking if it is during a busy time! I've never ate in but they do have a small dinning area! read more

I'll give you a 2 because the food tastes good, but I have to sing you because your portions are terrible. I order again and again, order extra chicken in Pad Prik, and never get it. This time the container was well over half sauce. I remind you regularly that you charge me for extra chicken but you never provide. I'm finally done with you. read more

We made a last minute decision to change our group lunch plans and Sy Thai Cafe was right across the street and not busy at all since they had just opened. As we entered the front door on Hamilton Row and were seated I realized that we had eaten here quite a few years ago and remembered it to have been a pretty good Thai restaurant! At that time we had entered through the back entrance facing the parking structure that offers first two hour parking free! There were eight in our group and we were the only ones there so putting tables together was quick and easy. Even later after other customers arrived, it remained relatively quiet so it was great for us to have our earth shaking conversations. The menu contained the usual Thai dishes an my wife ordered the Green Curry Tofu and I ordered the Red Curry Scallops. Water was distributed to everyone and our server kept them full throughout our meal. There were bowls of puff chips to munch while we waited for our entrees. Next everyone received a cup of Hot and Sour Soup that was hot, sour, and delicious! Finally our entrees arrived! I let my phone camera eat first but, to my undying shame, I shot everything except my Red Curry Scallops that I mindlessly devoured before I realized. But it was excellent with the right amount of heat for medium. Others in the group ordered Drunken Noodles, Fried Rice, and Sesame Chicken and everyone was happy with their choices. I need to come back to try more dishes! read more

Long story short: Good taste. Spice is right. Good portions. Friendly service. It's my go-to spot for Thai food. Sesame chicken, fresh rolls, and fried rice are all good. Long story long: I'm not an expert in Thai food. I have never cooked it. I do think this place provides a lot of food for the price and it has always been consistent for me. Both spice and flavor. I typically order the sesame chicken and fried rice with beef or chicken. There fresh rolls are also always good. I've eaten here 5x and haven't disappointed with the taste or portions. The price is also very reasonable. The wait staff are usually busy and that's just fine by me. I've never had to wait a long time for the food or to be seated. I will absolutely eat here again. read more

Why is my Thai looking like a rice based Shepherd's Pie? Asked for no corn and extra pea pods but I didn't mean I wanted frozen vegetable melody. Extremely mediocre at best and this kills me because this place has been my go to for so many years. Thanks for giving me a half bag of frozen Meijer vegetable medley and white rice and some red pepper flakes... extremely disappointed with a place that usually is top notch. Whoever let this leave the kitchen needs to leave the kitchen. Come on.. look at the frozen carrots and eggs... legit right from a bag!! Disgusting. Beyond that....My fresh rolls showed up with two pieces of shrimp total between the two rolls (not two per roll... you rad the right) and no dipping sauce. Go somewhere else if this is the quality that's leaving the kitchen now. read more

SY THAI CAFE - a plate of rice and vegetables - Thai Near Me - Birmingham, Michigan

My favorite Thai food restaurant ever. Reasonably priced and super quick, friendly service. Some of my favorite items are Tom Yum soup, Udon Noodles, Pad Thai, and Von Sen Noodles. I always get steamed tofu, which you have to specify when ordering tofu because the default is fried. The dinner servings are very generous so get ready for leftovers. Personally, I've found there isn't quite enough for 2 full servings but definitely a dinner and then a smaller lunch. If you do go for lunch, you get a smaller, cheaper serving size with a complimentary soup. I get take-out usually but when dining in they serve complimentary shrimp chips. You have to pay $2 if you want to get them to-go. I've tried many other Thai restaurants but none of them compare to this place! read more

Again, my favorite Thai food in the suburbs! The biggest difference between Sy Thai and other local Thai is that the food here is NEVER greasy or gloppy.. pad Thai here tastes so fresh. And true test: when you go to reheat the leftovers, still looks fresh, no grease and not flopped altogether. The Tom soup is so flavorful with a nice lemon kick and all of the rolls are fresh and tasty too. They have a fantastic set up during the pandemic that keeps delivery drivers, (Doordash, etc), outside of the restaurant with a pick up table at the door and plexiglass window at the cash register. *if you're able, pick it up yourself and allow them to keep the steep % that Doordash and other delivery companies take from them. I had virtually no contact picking up my order. read more

Great Thai spot that my family went to over the holidays. We had originally been waiting for a lane at Bowlero, which is nearby-ish, but decided to bail and get food. Star of the show: - Massaman curry was OUTSTANDING. Highlights: - Crab Rangoon that my step-dad had - Attentive service: my water glass was never empty - Panang curry with a nice level of spice - The crispy potatoes that they put in the curries made it filling - I got mine without any meat or tofu and felt that it was filling with the potatoes and all the other great veggies (carrots, snap peas, broccoli, green peppers) - Varied spice levels that were spot on. My mom had mild, I had hot and they were each of those things. Wish they had: - Alcohol! I would've loved a beer with my very spicy curry. They do not serve beer, wine, or liquors here. Next time I'm in town, I'll be requesting we go here so I can get the Massaman curry. read more

Nice quaint little place downtown Birmingham. This Thai place is really delicious and praise worthy! Food is fresh and there is something for every diet, restriction and limited spice palate! The menu has a huge variety to pick from and if you see a dish you like, you can even personalize it by omitting an ingredient or adding ingredients. The waiter was very resourceful and knowledgeable to recommend dishes and heat level that we would like. Be prepared to feed the meter as it's only 1 hour parking and you'll need to go back out to extend your time. Well worth it for the flavorful food you get! read more

Again... No spice in order not even 1 pepper flake and I ordered medium+ otherwise the flavor was good. I am not officially done with Sy Thai as this is the 3rd time my order is wrong over the month. I really believe that if you order at lunch they cook pad thai ahead and shovel it into dishes without regard to the requested spice level. This is unfortunte. read more

This day will live in my mind as one so magical it comes with rainbows and sparkle ponies, for this was the day that we found parking in front of the place we wanted to be! It was a sunny Sunday, the first one of the fall season. We had just gone to a concert in Sterling Heights put on by the DSO( which was wonderful) and my sister, being the madcap that she is, wanted to eat in Birmingham! Breaking out my trusty Yelp app on my phone, I checked all the options under "Restaurants". She nixed most of the gastro-pubs and steakhouses and any place we could eat at Downriver. When I checked the listing for Sy Thai Cafe, she was intrigued. We hadn't had good Thai in a long time and the reviews were promising so off we went! The map directions brought us right to the front door and in a way that can only be described as "a miracle", we got parking in front of the place. If you are familiar with Birmingham, you know that people don't envy the make of your car or the clothes you wear as much as they covet the parking space you just slid into. Parking space envy is so acute that people spend most of their time circling instead of using the dreaded parking garages! If you pause before exiting your vehicle, they wait at your back bumper with signal indicating they want your space, until you wave them away! Sy Thai opens at four p.m. on a Sunday and when we asked for a booth the model-handsome staff was surprised that we wanted to eat in. We were directed to the one in front and soon found out that most of the customers that day were carryout. It was funny seeing people try to dash in and get their basil rice or Pad Thai before they were caught double parked. Since the cafe had two entrances, one in back by the parking structure as well as the one in front, you saw customers coming from all directions. I ordered the Seafood Pad Thai( with scallops, shrimp and imitation crab) mild, since I'm a baby when it comes to hot food. My sister was more daring, ordering the curry salmon medium. She also ordered something like crab Ragoons for an appetizer. They were nice but not memorable. She was addicted to the rice crackers and was more impressed with them than the appetizer. When our mains came out we were both pleased with the quality and quantity of the portions. There was enough for the next day. My poor sister did meet her match with the medium heat of her salmon-her eyes started watering immediately and she ordered mango ice cream afterwards to cut the fire! Prices are comparable with the Downriver area and wouldn't deter us from coming back. The classy bathrooms looks like a spa retreat and that was a plus as well. If I lived in the area, this would be my go-to carry out place! P.S. They mark dishes on the menu as Gluten Free as well as Vegetarian or Vegan! That makes ordering so easy! read more

SY THAI has been one of our favorite go to restaurants for decades. The food is always good but lately we've switch from take out to eat in. We were there today. We came in through the funky dirty alley door. I was aghast when my hand slid down the door handle because it was coated in something greasy. I seriously had to stop in the restroom to wash my hands. Unfortunately even the little hall leading to the dining room was dirty, not like someone just spilled something but months of total neglect kind of dirty. Thankfully the dining room itself was ok. I write this in the hopes that the owners will see it and clean it, soon. Please, it was always a great place but it's hard to eat there when it's so dirty. read more

This is my favorite Thai restaurant in metro Detroit, and I've been to a few. Conveniently located right by the Palladium, so it's good to go to before or after a movie. The lunch prices are super reasonable, and dinner is not bad either. I always get the Ka Prow because it has huge mushrooms, which I love, and you get a ton of food. You always get a basket of shrimp chips too which are yummy. Lunch also includes a small bowl of soup. The service is awesome too. My only complaint is that they are not open for Sunday lunch! Just for dinner. read more

I ordered lunch today from Sy Thai via UberEats. I ordered vegetable curry with shrimp and Tom Yum soup with chicken. The Uber driver delivered on time as promised but the food quality was disappointing to say the least. I had 5 small shrimp in the curry and no chicken in the soup. I also requested chopsticks which were not included. Thumbs down Sy Thai. You typically provide good dishes but not today. read more

Tried this place when I was visiting Michigan and it was ok. The food wasn't too bad but the menu was very limited and they didn't have papaya salad which was a miss with us. We have been long time customers of Sy Thai in Birmingham, I personally have been coming here literally for decades. About a week ago our family ordered Thai carry out, and my wife's curry noodle dish was dry, dry, dry and flavorless. Did I mention dry? It was literally just noodles, two pieces of onion and barely any of this absolutely tasteless sauce. It was really disappointing because Thai is a pretty big cheat for her and she was really excited. We called to let them know, and the guy on the phone seemed like he could care less. He tried to explain the dish to us, and we told him we've eaten the dish in question for years, we are aware of what it is. Anyhow, my wife wanted to push for some kind of compensation, but I could tell that that conversation with this gentlemen was going nowhere. I kindly let him know they should really investigate the situation because this performance was going to lose them possibly more than one long term customer. There was a short period before Covid where we stopped going due to some quality issues, but during Covid we gave them another try and the takeout returned to great quality. Prior to Covid there was a handful of times that the food was not so great, we almost inquired as to who the chef was at the time, because sometimes we'd come in and it was great, and other days it was mediocre or worse. We assumed it was who was cooking and could maybe find out which chef was in and maybe we could avoid them in the future. But this last visit just took the cake, and the 'we could care less' response on the phone was simply not adequate. We are NOT complainers, we have both worked in the service industry for years, and we tip well. I would hope that this experience was an exception, but I'm not sure we'll ever be back to find out. read more
