We rented a van (Quest) from Switchback for our most recent ski trip. The price was amazing and we were able to get a 15 passenger van with the back seat removed for gear, which is exactly what we needed. Being able to look at all the vans and find the exact one we wanted online was great. The rental process was a little bit confusing at first since it was less "official" than a traditional car rental company, but everything ended up great. So I'll start by saying I'd use Switchback again in the future but there are some caveats you should keep in mind if you choose to try them out. The reservation process was really easy and handled completely online. In fact, the entire waiver, license, and reservation process was smoother than most large car rental agencies. Whoever is handling their IT should feel some sense of pride. I ended up renting the Blanca van to haul some friends up to Red Rocks for a show as I was DD'ing for the evening. There is a lockbox bolted onto the back door of the van so you can pick it up even if no one is at the rental center. Pretty cool. I was told by an employee that the fuel gauge was broken and that it showed it was less than full, even though it really was full. If I just filled it up normally until the pump stopped it'd be fine. The van itself has definitely seem some use, I believe it was over 300k+ miles. The back door lock was broken and wouldn't open after we closed it the first time (all the doors were unlocked when we picked it up). This made for some awkward maneuvering to try and retrieve bags that were in the back. Also, the power locks didn't work for any of the doors. You had to go around and manually actuate everything. The headlights on the van equate to someone duct taping their smartphone to the front of the vehicle. Actually, a smartphone might actually put out more light. There is no difference between low beam and high beam. Same dim glow. When I went to fill up the tank, I ended up putting in 8 gallons after driving 30 miles. The math works out to worse than 4 mpg which isn't realistic. Turns out they rented me the van with the tank not fully topped off, so I refilled it after whoever had it before me. A bit frustrating. After I mentioned this to an employee when I returned the van, there was no apology or discount, just a "oh ok, that's fine". Lame. Keep your expectations in check and you'll have a fine time using Switchback. read more

Just returned from a 3 week road trip with my family of 6. We rented the monster, it's a 12 passenger van with no back seats so there is plenty of room for cargo. The van was waiting for us right outside baggage claim, the key was in the lock box, we loaded it up and we were good to go. All the paper work was done online, which translates into...no shuttles or lines to wait on for rentals. We traveled about 2,600 miles over 3 weeks, up steep mountain passes, through deserts and even drove the Moki dugway with out a problem. The air conditioner was ice cold and the auxilary cord was well used by all of my kids who took turns DJing the trip. When we were done, we dropped it off in the parking lot and walked right into the airport. It was seamless to rent from switchback. However, some things to keep in mind. These are high mileage rentals...these are not brand new vehicles. I think ours had 405k on it but it drove perfectly. The van had a few dents on it, and the interior looked like a van that had a lot of miles. As long as you have realistic expectations, you will not be disappointed. As previously reviewed, the pick up and delivery are exceptional. Very, very easy and convenient. But these vans are advertised as ugly, and that's OK (none of my clients care less what they look like). But this weekend was down right scary due to worn brakes. seriously worn brakes. and we don't have time in our schedule to get a replacement van, get this van fixed, etc. I have now used Switchback 6 weekends, and each van has a few more things broken on it then the last one. But this weekend was just dangerous. Switchback people (I assume you read your reviews) your business model is great. Your mechanic sucks. Ugly is OK. Dangerous is not. Fix what needs to be fixed before you rent your vans. read more

Van came as advertised - old, high mileage, but functional and equipped with good snow tires for trucking around ski country. The van also had a modern sound deck with aux/usb input, so we could listen to our music while we drove. Picking up and returning the van was also painless. Two complaints: the passenger side seatbelt in our van didn't come all the way across to the buckle, so nobody sat there. And secondly, the wipers weren't fantastic in snow and probably should be replaced. That being said, we were still satisfied and I'd rent from them again. read more

Rented Sam the Suburban for a trip up to Winter Park with friends. As noted, the vehicle was old and well used (218k miles) but it drove great and did the job. Air condition worked great for the heat we encountered in Denver, and it was more than enough room for 5 adults. Switchback support was super helpful and responsive, and they were available for any questions, concerns, or problems we had. I will definitely keep Switchback in mine for any future similar trips. read more

I made a reservation a month ago to rent a 15 person van. They emailed me TWO days before that I could only get a 12 person one now. If I had needed a 12 person that's what I would have rented. Didn't even really seem to care that they were ruining a huge event I had planned for two months. I changed my reservation to Adventure Camper Rentals. Adventure has been great but it has already ended up costing me an extra $100. Don't use these guys!! read more

I loved how easy it was to pick up our van right in the airport parking lot besides dealing with transfer vans, checking in lines etc. apparently they could have met us but that didn't happen in our situation. We were a family of 12 & no time to really shuffle everyone around so this worked out great fir us! Keep in mind luggage!!!! Thanks goodness all they had when I booked was a 15 passenger, because we only needed 12 seats but took a lot of juggling & the full last seat for luggage! The staff was extremely friendly & very quick to return email and/or text. We rented the Monster, an 8 passenger 4WD van with plenty of room for two snowboard bags and 8 mid sized roller bags. It had 420k miles on it but got us from Denver to Breckenridge and back. It was awesome to drive in town and I felt like I could go anywhere with good traction. I was a little less comfortable on the way back in snow and heavy traffic on HWY 70 because the idling engine felt like it might shut down at any moment and the suspension made every bump feel bigger than it was. But the Monster got us where we were going and never broke down, so all in all I am happy. Also, the online paperwork, pick up at airport and drop off service worked like a charm and saved a ton of time versus using a rental agency. I would use again and would recommend, especially if they bought some newer, lower mileage vans! read more

I rented a van from Switchback to use as a people mover to and from the ski mountains. (we rented a home in silverthorne and were rotating between A basin , keystone and vail - total # of people 9). The online signup was easy, the pickup / drop off process in the airport was awesome - so easy. If you are looking for a brand new van, you probably should look elsewhere. The van I rented has been run pretty hard over the years. (they are used airport shuttle vans I suspect), but ours ran well and had plenty of power to go up and down the pass. The tires on the van were really meaty snow tires with studs. Driving up to vail on a snowy morning I was mighty happy to have some really good tires on the van. I told my wife if I had the choice between a brand new van with typical road tires or this van with these studded snows I would take this van everyday in the mountains. The van definitely had some squeaks, but for us it added a bit to the adventure. My wife said it reminded her of the vehicles we drove when we were young. My kids called it the squeaky fudge mobile, but at the end of the trip they demanded I take there pictures with the fudge mobile. Marc read more

So I have to echo several of the reviews I have seen here, The van, Ivy, was exactly as advertised: old, functional and high mileage (over 150K), However, she drove well and while we did not need snow tires on our trip up to Steamboat, I am sure they would have worked fine. The seats were worn and my older compatriots complained about sore bottoms upon arrival at destinations on either end (so to speak), it was exactly what we expected. We got 10 people and all the luggage in the van and while we were definitely at risk of breaking any land speed records going up the mountains, it was just fine for moving from DEN to Steamboat and back. The check in and check out process was easy and flawless. The only recommendation that I would make is for the location of a gas station close to the airport. We did not notice that there was a gas station on airport property on the exit side of the airport so we spent an extra 20 minutes looking for one at several exits prior to arrival at DEN (unfortunately, I was driving and my co-pilot did not think to use Yelp to find a close station). So maybe it would be a nice little aid to provide a map either on rental or electronically. Other than that, this was a solid performer. Thanks so much read more

We needed the van for 15 people and it was great!! "Oscar" came to us as advertised and was just what we were looking for EXCEPT the headlights were scarily low light. It made driving the roads around Copper very dangerous. Tried to clean them but just not bright enough, maybe a good internal cleaning or just replacing them with some more higher intensity would do the trick! read more

This experience was nothing but a headache, literally. Although reserving the vehicle and the support leading up to getting the vehicle was good, nothing after was at all great. We didn't need a fancy vehicle, the bandaid holding together the mirror was fine (truth, not a joke), but every mile seemed scarier. The saying is true, you get what you pay for. The price was great for the rental, but we ended up needing to get a separate rental for the majority of the trip, then switching again to bring the van home. Switchback was shown videos of the van shaking horribly on the highway, as well as one of the seatbelt not working - did not even return the fees paid... You may service your vehicles after every trip, but try balancing your wheels and confirming safety issues before sending them out again. read more

OK, this is our experience. We got the 15 passenger van and it looked like it had been in a war zone. Arm rests were torn off, no vents in the roof for AC (the AC did not work well until the van started moving-and people in back roasted while the people in front were cold, but since there were no vents to close-tried plugging the front vents with umbrellas and napkins so the air would be shoved to the back of the van), low tire light on when we got the van, headlights were out/or so dim we had to have brights on just to drive normally in the dark. Interior was filthy. We had to clean it the best we could before we used it (we had two babies in car seats and one in a child booster seat). Supposedly when we complained about the shape of the vehicle, we were told we would be given a 15% reduction in price (haven't checked to see if that really occurred yet). We were also told the vehicle was a work vehicle for the business (why would they rent a work vehicle?). We had babies and a full van for multiple days. They did offer to take back the vehicle for no charge the first day, but we were in Denver area and stuck as no other vehicles from them or other rental agencies were available last minute to rent in place of the van we got. We were very dissatisfied, but looked at it as an adventure especially when we stopped and people looked as us weird as we all piled out of the hunk of junk. Believe me the van we got did not look like the picture below. Yes, you save money, but have to put up with old, worn, dirty, nonfunctioning vehicles (AC, vents, headlights, etc). If that's what you like, go for it with this company. Personally, they need to put some of the money that they do get back into the vehicles and at least get them looking decent and some elbow grease to clean them would be nice. Smell wasn't all that nice either, told everyone that if it gets worse I was going to spray perfume under each seat. read more

I want to start by saying that the rental process online was fairly painless and the staff I spoke to on the phone was very friendly and helpful. The fact that we were able to pick up at the Denver airport was convenient. When we saw the van we were taken aback by the condition. The website said to expect some wear and tear but we were not expecting an odometer of 180,000 miles. Aesthetic issues aside, we were concerned for our safety while in this vehicle. There was a large crack in the wind shield to start. The windshield wipers required replacement and offered no help for the very limited visibility we experienced while driving through substantial snow fall.There was no way to use the car horn as the buttons were missing. The tires were not in the best condition, especially when driving through snow. Every time we got into the vehicle we were worried. read more
