While visiting Durango last week my friend and I were in search of a quick, laid-back spot to eat lunch. We were only in town for the day to watch a soccer tournament and were trying to fit a meal in between games. We first put our names down at the pizza restaurant next door to Switchback, but as we were waiting and seeing the food offered by both restaurants, we quickly removed our name from the waiting list at the pizza restaurant in favor of the Mexican restaurant Switchback. The pizza did not look bad, in fact it looked quite good, but the food being served at Switchback simply looked better. Located in the Historic District of Durango, Switchback offers what they describe as, Mexican-style street food. The restaurant itself is clean and hospitable with simple design and availability for outdoor seating open for lunch and dinner between 11:30 and 9:00. The menu is straight forward and easy to navigate once you scan the QR code with your phone. Switchback offers several variations of street tacos, salads, quesadillas, elote, and different French fries and dips. There are a variety of options to suit your dietary needs ranging from vegan and vegetarian options to gluten free. The price was reasonable but leaning on the expensive side. Our overall experience at Switchback was quite positive. The food was delicious, they were able to accommodate specific allergy restrictions, and we left wanting to come back soon and boasting our delicious lunch to friends who opted for quicker, fast-food lunch options. As a vegetarian, I usually find options at restaurants but am almost never blown away by the dishes I receive, as it seems most non-vegetarian restaurants focus their attention on other dishes, typically containing meat. This was not the case at Switchback. I ordered the mushroom tacos and was shocked by how delicious they were. The mushrooms had an intense depth of flavor that I have rarely found in vegetable-based dishes. The toppings provided flavor, crunch, and complexity while allowing the main element of the tacos shine. The original elote was also delicious with the perfect ratio of corn to mayonnaise. The option to choose your elote on the cob or in a cup makes it easy to share with your table. The service was also great, and we were met with nothing but kindness, understanding, and attentiveness when we notified our waiter of a cashew allergy (not a universal experience at all restaurants). Overall, we left the restaurant full and excited to return to try new menu items next time. Notable weaknesses of Switchback include the outdoor seating location, accessibility of the menu, and the inability to split checks. Likely due to Covid and adapting to the realities of living during the midst of a pandemic, Switchback has constructed an outdoor seating area. While this is a great way to reduce the risk of contracting Covid-19 and enjoying the outdoor weather, eating beside a busy, downtown street does not provide the best eating experience. While it is lovely to enjoy the clear, Durango skies it is preferable to do so in the absence of traffic and its noise. Additionally, while having a virtual menu distributed via QR code reduces the risk of contracting and spreading Covid, it is not the most accessible option (not that printed menus are completely accessible either). My friend and I both had a week cell-service connection and had trouble getting the menu to load on our phones. This is not necessarily the restaurants' fault but still notable. Finally, Switchback cannot split checks among parties While this was not necessarily an issue I encountered; I did make note of it when I saw the notice on the menu. Not having the ability to split a check may make it difficult if you wish to eat at Switchback with a group where everyone will be paying for themselves. Overall, I had a great experience at Switchback and my friend, and I barely noticed any weaknesses the restaurant had after enjoying the restaurant's delicious food. While their outdoor seating may not be in the best location, there is great indoor seating in the spacious and comfortable restaurant space. QR code menus may be a hassle but most likely not nearly as much of a hassle than contracting Covid. Finally, in my opinion the quality of the food is worth not being able to split the check amongst those who you choose to dine with. Afterall, cash, PayPal, or Venmo are all simple ways to pay someone back for a meal! If you are in the Durango area, I cannot suggest Switchback enough! read more

I was going to just order a couple of random tacos, but we asked the waitress what the best ones were, and she suggested the birria taco plate. I said I wasn't sure I wanted three of the same tacos, but she made them sound so good and my husband decided to order some regular tacos so we could split and share. When the birria tacos came, both he and I bit into it and OMG, one of the best tacos ever. He liked it so much that he briefly tried his tacos and then ordered the birria plate as well. It is a brisket that is cooked in an amazing sauce and the sauce is also given as part of the plate to dip the taco in. They could bottle that sauce and make a fortune because I think we would put it on everything. The margaritas were ok, but we are from Austin and have tons of really good margarita options there. The margarita made with Herradura Silver was the best. The one with Casamigos Reposado was good but wasn't worth the $14 price. I don't know how the other tacos taste, but these were so good that we went back the next day for lunch and were shopping on Main anyway. Go get these tacos!!! read more

Ordered the pork green chili enchiladas Togo today. (I ordered at 11am for pick up in the pm) Absolutely recommend! So delicious and you heat them up at home to ensure a nice hot family meal. I really enjoy switchback on Sundays. The birria taco plate is good but it has a little sweet taste to it maybe from the corn tortillas. The quesadilla is good too but it is kind of greasy. And the street tacos are great. read more

Tried three different tacos the steak, tofu, and chicken adobada. All were seriously delicious although small. The bar menu was large and impressive. Full house for the dinner rush, sat at the bar. De-lish! At first I had reservations because the top of the menu lists the available proteins and I am wary of plug and play menus like this. However, My apprehension quickly dissipated. The House margarita was excellent: tasty, strong and glass half-rimmed with salt - very nice touch. We ordered the fresh corn chips (which were very fresh) with guacamole, queso and salsa roja. The queso was white: not sure if the base cheese was cotija, queso fresco or crema but the taste was interesting, different than the usual and again, delicious. Everyone in our party ordered the carnitas with pineapple salsa, pickled onions and cilantro. So simple but the combined flavors were pretty fantastic and the pork was perfect. I also ordered the elote in a cup, a bit salty but still delicious and I used the left-over chips and queso to enhance this part of my dining experience. Attentive server but not over-bearing. We sat outside and really enjoyed ourselves. We will definitely be back. read more

This place is great - and so much better than what was there in literally every way. Starting with the staff, to a person they are engaged, appreciative of you choosing their restaurant, and humble about where they came from. Then, the tacos are solid (and delicious!) and at a great price. Chips and house made salsas and hot sauces are tasty and plentiful. The design is bright and welcoming too. My only criticism is that the bar could be a bit more precise with their techniques, but a $6 margarita in this town? I'll take it!! read more
