What can I say...horrible! Overpriced, crappy service, and extremely small portions. The place was pretty empty for lunch so we thought, eh let's give them another try. Boy, do I wish I'd gone somewhere else. I was underwhelmed with the taste and the portion size. To top it off, I was very clear with the waitstaff that I am highly allergic to avocados so he needed to alert the kitchen staff. "No worries" was his response because my order had no avocados on the plate. I received 3 very small street tacos and after eating my first two I noticed a big splooch of guacamole on the third taco. Immediately, I contacted the server and he was perplexed and a bit unconcerned. I had no idea if I had consumed any guac and if I was going to suffer anaphylaxis. I took some Benadryl because I didn't want to go to the hospital if I used my EpiPen. I have been sick all day and all that was required of Switchback was to keep all avocados off my plate! I understand accidents happen but this was negligent on Switchback's part. The kitchen needs to take steps to ensure that the meals that they serve their customers are safe. Why must EVERYTHING have cilantro?? There was exactly one item that is soap free! See, there many many people to whom cilantro tastes like soap. I am one of those and it makes me sad when virtually everything on the menu has the evil green. It would be great to add a mention on the menu that you offer a crema that is cilantro free. Great happy hour!!! We got the nachos and flauta for $5 as well as the house margarita at happy hour. The size of the drink was the same as during regular dinner hours, so that was nice. Happy hour bites were small but delicious. The service was super friendly and accommodating. We all got tacos, shrimp, carnitas, and steak. Great drinks and amazing tacos! I ordered one of every taco and the $2.75 tacos were bursting with flavor. I'm used to bland and overpriced tacos from NM, and this was so refreshing. Margaritas were tasty and they have a nice tequila menu. In fact, our cool waitress even let me do a mini tequila tasting flight, which wasn't on the menu! Hussong's reposado tequila is one of my favorites :) I just wish they made a typical caipirinha instead of the one on the menu without any sugar. This place reminded me of a swankier Kip's over in Pagosa Springs. Keep up the good work (and food)! read more

Devine! If you ever want to expand please come to Raleigh, NC. We started with the chips and salsa trio. To my surprise the smoked salsa was my favorite. Margaritas and Palomas to drink. Main course was the street corn (a must) along with steak tacos, brisket tacos and quesadillas. Such a refreshing take on classic Mexican. My only critique is that pickled onions should be included with the tacos and not have to ask for them. Overall: friendly staff, great food, great prices nestled in a little nook in historic Durango. You just have to try the Switchback fries, they are fantastic (queso, adobada chicken, chipotle mayo, just delicious). So much, on our short trip (2 days) through we ate them twice. Their tacos are small, but the flavors are great so order 3 to fill up. We tried the shrimp, adobada, and pork. All of them were really good, my favorite was the chicken adobada. I even asked for them to put that in an appetizer queso and it was great (which I think they should put on the menu). Many places in Texas call it queso compuesto (queso with meat and/or salsa/quac). Swithback was the best place we tried in Durango for lunch. Give it a shot, you'll definitely find something you'll like! read more

I loved the tacos and would have given this place 5 stars, but the girl who took my order was unsmiling, and basically just stared at us while we ordered. My friend had never had street tacos and had a question, but smirky-face just looked impatient (there was no one in line behind us). The tacos were delicious, however. The meat was flavorful, the cilantro (I love cilantro and could eat a cilantro sandwich) was fresh, the onions were just the right amount. The food here is great, the service not so much. read more

I have a condo in Purgatory and stay there about 7 months out of the year, and I finally got around to trying this place. I ordered the smoked brisket taco, chorizo taco with the avo salsa and the steak taco. I thought that the steak taco was super dry and not enjoyable. I ate that one first and then I had the chorizo... I kid you not, there was a hair in it. I pulled it out of my mouth after I had taken a bite and I was so disgusted. By far the switchback fries were our favorite. The brisket was smoky and tender, queso was perfect. My only complaint is that the lettuce in the salad is cut very large, and because the shape of the bowl, it is impossible to cut the lettuce. The Birria tacos were off-the-hook amazing! Kept the essential birria character with beautiful sauce/soup and put in excellent corn tortillas. Fresh accents and lightly pickled carrots onions...The Top shelf Margarita was brilliant too. My sons enjoyed the kiddos quesadillas with orange slices. They had chicken adoboda for protein. A newer place to me since I was last in Durango. They have inside and outside seating. The food was delicious. We ordered the chips and queso, which is a white cheese instead of traditional yellow cheese. The elote in a cup was good too. It supposedly had hot Cheeto mayo, but it definitely wasn't hot, nor did it taste like hot Cheetos. I ordered the chicken adobado taco and carnitas taco. The chicken was definitely the way to go, so moist it made the tortilla fall apart. Hopefully they can start doubling up on corn tortillas to keep it together. The carnitas was a little dry and could have used a side of salsa or even cojita cheese. The margaritas were good. I even had a strawberry infused margarita with vodka instead and it was amazing, plus the tajin rim to top it off. Staff was friendly and accommodating. I unfortunately wasn't a fan of my drink "to-go" because it didn't taste the same. Overall, definitely worth trying again. read more

Traveling through Durango on a Canyons and Mesas tour and dropped off at RR Depot. Used my trusty Yelp app to find a close by 4.5 restaurant. Low and behold Switchback popped up .3 of mile down Main St. Well worth the walk for the Elote which was the best Mexican street corn my wife and I had ever eaten. We also enjoyed some of the best tinga chicken tacos to top off the Elote. Service was great and they didn't mind adding extras to customize our tinga tacos to suit our wishes.
