By now, cupcakes seem passe as far as dessert fads go, but I still love them. Maybe I still remember how happy I was whenever there was a bake sale in middle school, and someone would bring in those cupcakes with those little star shaped sprinkles on the icing (I loved those star shaped sprinkles). So I still try the local cupcake options whenever I can. "Smiles" the purple truck is super cute, and the owner/maker (I think her name is Stacey, since her company is called Sweet Stacey Cakes) is super nice. She is very supportive of the other food trucks and local businesses, which I really appreciate. The cupcakes themselves? Hit or miss for me. I really liked the vanilla chai, which was very dense but with deliciously spiced chai flavor, and light fluffy icing. I also tried the cherry lemonade, which was way too heavy and sweet for me (I couldn't finish it), and the Caramel Chocolate Drizzle, which was way, way too sweet for me. For someone with a hardcore sweet tooth, they may be perfect, but I prefer lighter, moister, fluffier cupcakes. I keep looking for her version of Red Velvet (my favorite, as far as cupcake flavors go), but have never seen it on the menu when I stopped by. Yay to more foodtrucks, and I appreciate Smiles' creative and quirky flavor combinations, but as far as cupcakes go, I can't say these are my favorite. read more
