a bowl of rice, beans, and greens

Food is solid. Enjoyed the chicken curry bowl. I only wish it had more greens and less chicken lol Customer service so nice! I got a complimentary sweet fried bread thing which was also delicious! I already inhaled that but now that I think about it, it would have been perfect dipped in chai tea.

Catered lunch

We had a catered lunch from Swahili Spot, and overall, it was a good experience. The Bongo Beef had nice flavor, but there was a bit too much fat for my liking. The Zanzibar Chicken also had good seasoning, though it came out a bit dry. I really enjoyed the fresh and tasty green salad, and the coconut rice was wonderfully aromatic. The Makande Stew was an interesting dish with firm and chewy ingredients--a unique first-time experience for me. The sautéed greens, however, were cooked down a little too much. All in all, it was a solid meal, though a few improvements would have made it even better.

Wow, what a gem of a find! The food was a large portion, and it tasted amazing! I'll definitely be back -- thank you!

Food: Primarily Tanzanian but also food from surrounding East African countries. I lived in Uganda for a summer which borders Tanzania and can say the food is legit. Immigrant owned and operated. Recommended Food: - The Rolex: Omelette wrapped in chapati with veggies and hot sauce. This is a street food found all around East Africa. - Chicken Sambusa: Triangular, savory puff pastry with ground chicken and vegetables. They have a vegetarian and beef version as well that I didn't try. - Vitumbua (very dense coconut mini-pancake with vanilla flavor). Delicious dessert. Ambiance: This is primarily a takeaway place. It is small and bare-boned with only a few small tables and the kitchen clearly visible behind the counter. There are some African flags, bowls and photos to show cultural pride. Tip: Order in advance for pickup if you are in a rush. If you have time, order at the restaurant and they'll make most of the dishes by hand in front of you. They are only open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00AM to 5:00PM. Phone number: (510) 978-9495

I first met the owner at a food festival in Oakland where they had their food truck out and have been coming to the restaurant frequently since! The Curry Chicken Bowl is my favorite. The rice, beans and greens go together so well.

We finally got a chance to try The Swahili Spot and the food is awesome. Ingredients are fresh and cooked with love. Everything is seasoned well and there is no heat added. Now the pepper sauce is INCREDIBLE for the spice lovers. We only had vegetarian & fish dishes, but look forward to trying all of the meat entrees and sides. Ordered: fried whole fish with coconut rice, vegetarian rice pilau, vegetable sambusa, and mandazi for dessert. The pinto beans are the star of all dishes!! Yum

It would be nice to eat it there at their table or as take out to eat at a park or just at the lake a walk away! We will definitely come back for more. They also have super cute little Knick knacks around the store to purchase and even make a cute gift basket. From the very beginning, during the inquiry phase, Cinthya was responsive, helpful, and genuinely informative. When we asked about trying their food before booking, they went out of their way to invite us to one of their pop-up events--something no other caterer we contacted offered. We're also very particular about Mexican food that feels authentic to our roots, and after just one bite, we were completely sold. The food was delicious, unique, and deeply rooted in culture. Once we officially booked, Cinthya remained communicative and supportive throughout the entire planning process. She took the time to connect with us over calls to finalize details and thoughtfully craft our menu. Sabores Komali truly went above and beyond to meet our venue's requirements. Our Wedgewood Wedding venue required extensive documentation, and while they already had some in place, they worked to obtain everything else needed. Requirements included: insurance, business licensing, health department reports, food handler certifications, and menus. It never felt like a transactional relationship--instead, it felt like a shared commitment to making our wedding day perfect. One of the most meaningful parts of our wedding vision was incorporating culture through both food and visual presentation--and Sabores Komali brought that vision to life beautifully. The aesthetic they created with their setup, plates, and overall design was exactly what I had dreamed of. Every detail felt intentional and cohesive. Everything was clearly labeled, organized, and easy to navigate, which made the experience feel elevated and thoughtful. The food was incredible. For cocktail hour, they prepared an amazing spread of appetizers: fresh guacamole and salsa, esquites, and tinga empanadas. Dinner featured a taco bar with cochinita pibil, pork al pastor, and grilled steak, along with a variety of flavorful salsas and toppings, rice and refried beans, and refreshing aguas frescas (we had horchata and cucumber lime which were so delicious). The salsas, in particular, were all incredibly unique and packed with flavor. Their team also provided attentive, professional service throughout the event, kept everything clean and organized, and created a smooth, enjoyable dining experience for all our guests. We received so many compliments about the food--it was honestly one of the highlights of our entire wedding. I've attended many weddings and have never been particularly impressed by the food--until ours. Supporting a local business that so clearly takes pride in their work made the experience even more meaningful. We were even lucky enough to have leftovers, which meant we got to continue enjoying their amazing food after our wedding which was such a treat! Every detail--from setup to service--felt intentional, vibrant, and full of cultural pride. Huge thanks to Maya, Cinthya and their entire Sabores Komali team for making our special day so memorable and proud. Both of us would wholeheartedly recommend Sabores Komali for any special event--you will not regret it! Be sure to take a look at the photos and videos of their setup from our wedding! We are so happy with our decision to book with Sabores Komali.

My son requested a Mexican taco bar with chips and guacamole, esquite cups (Mexican street corn), and fruit cups with Tajín--and Cinthya and Chef Maya delivered beautifully. I originally found them through Yelp after all the taco caterers recommended in my mom's Facebook group were already booked. I was a little hesitant since they didn't have many reviews, but I'm SO glad I took a chance--this team is a hidden gem! From the beginning, Cinthya was a great to work with--super responsive, organized, and flexible. She provided menu options and helped us make selections that fit our budget. I especially appreciated that they came out in advance to look at the space and plan the setup. That kind of extra care goes a long way when you're hosting a big event. The food was incredible. Many of our guests commented on how delicious everything was. The tacos were flavorful, the empanadas and guacamole were crowd favorites, and the fruit cups with Tajín were a fun and refreshing touch--just like my son wanted.  We even added churros to the menu that were fresh and good. Beyond the amazing Mexican menu, we learned that Chef Maya is trained in a variety of cuisines, so we're already thinking of booking her in the future for a special occasion family dinner. The professionalism, warmth, and attention to detail that Sabores Komali brought to our event made it truly special. If you're looking for authentic flavors, reliable service, and people who genuinely care about your event, don't hesitate to book Sabores Komali. They made my son's graduation party unforgettable!
