It took me a while to get into Ethiopian food (injera may be an acquired taste) but I was craving Ethiopian and wanted to support a black owned business, so I hopped on Doordash and found Lula! Their veggie combo and meat combo prices were reasonable and I'm still figuring out exactly which stews I enjoy in the combination platters so I decided on these to share with my boyfriend. TAAASTY!!! I love my meat but I gotta say I enjoyed the veggie combo here much much more. I've also found my fave Ethiopian veggie dish- misir wot! Absolutely yes. Got our standard order when trying a new restaurant: vehicle combo and gored gored. Everything was perfect. I've never had raw meat so meltingly tender and at just the right level of I need more water but cannot stop eating this spice. The lentil and pea dishes had well balanced flavors and great texture. I then called the restaurant to confirm pickup time and they told me that the website doesn't work and that they can't cancel the order through their website, so its up to me to figure out how to get my $85 back. Based on some Googling it seems like the point-of-sale company that Lula used (MenuStarPOS) has a reputation for this, but still, the fact that Lula hasn't done anything about it means I now have to file a dispute with my CC company...and don't get to eat any food. read more

Vegan Review I've been a few times. Nice people. The veggie combo comes with the standard flavor profile-- so that's good. And items are a lil more slow cooked than other spots (so the collard greens are more reminiscent of melt-in-the-mouth Southern style) What I can't overlook is the hefty amount of oil they use. This restaurant opened in the same building that used to be Bole restaurant. The owners of Bole left suddenly in December, and sadly I did not have a chance to say goodbye, or find out what happened. I miss them, they were my friends. The food at Lula is very different from the food at Bole. Although I am not Ethiopian, the food strikes me as like what your mother would cook at home, in that nation. It doesn't have the fresh exciting quality that Bole had, but it is good as comfort food. The first dish I ate there was Kay Wot, my favorite Ethiopian dish. Lula's offering is flavored well and comes with a serving of cooked greens, which were also tasty. The next time, I had Doro Wot, the chicken version. It comes with a drumstick, a hard-boiled egg, Ethiopian cottage cheese, and a salad. The salad was excellent, with baby beet leaves and baby spinach. The amount of sauce you could just scoop up to eat with injera was more sparse with this dish. Both times, the wot was good enough, and since I crave Ethiopian intensely, I will surely be back; but it doesn't compare to Abbi's cooking at Bole. read more

Just tried Lula for the first time. It is a small greasy spoon-type place, very work-a-day dinner style. However- the food was totally fabulous and is, all things considered, the best Ethiopian food I have had yet (have gone to three other places in Oakland area)!!! The injeera was soft, with a refined crumb size, nicely fermented. The gomen and wats were very flavorful. The awaze also was yummy- it was thicker, redder, more pungent-really enjoyable. Giving away another secret place is hard to do, BUT THIS PLACE IS AMAZING! The unassuming neighborhood and mixed business which surround it are excellent for hiding the wonderful kitchen. I have been here several times and tried a number of the dishes, ALL INCREDIBLE! The place can fit about 30 people, so care is given to each customer. The selection of dishes is plentiful, but if you are anxious about the food you can merely chat with the chef. Yes, I said chef. She come out and checks on each of the guests. It was some of the best Ethiopian food I've had, and I've tried multiple offerings many times in NYC, Chicago, and DC.
